There's a walking group on FB that I've "liked" but not yet done anything about - they walk around the Pearl at 7:30 on a Wednesday I think what is the group called? I would be interested in that as I'm near there....( I think) Where is Aspire? sorry but I'm new here and still figuring my way round....I'm by Palm Jumeira. If you are near me I wouldn't mind joining you too :) ETA ok I've just realised this is a Qatar post :\:....whoopsy edited by coco pops on 23/10/2011

Hi coco pops, just found an old thread of yours about socialising and settling in. Not sure if you're still looking at that so thought would try to catch you on here. Not long arrived, working mum with a 10 year old son. Great childless friends but don't know anyone with children similar age to do kid friendly socialising. Did you guys link up? :) Hey! Sorry I didn't see my old link.... I met with a few ladies now, some with children & some without :) but it's been a while. I hope you & the kids are settling in ok? It's been a little hectic over weekends doing "visa stuff" but hopefully we can meet with the kids? I'm not sure if EW organises regular family events...I know there's one coming up soon though, that you may be interested in, I may go to that too with the kids.

Is it possible to switch schools/ nurseries after the 1st term? (providing of course a school of my choice had a space?) I read somewhere that you can't change schools within the same academic year? Is this correct? TIA

I'd wait to see if you can get a half price deal....if you can get that here ( I'm still fairly new here!) Then pay for 6 sessions up front.... I know www.lacontourspa.com were doing an offer last month, you'll have to call them to see if they'll offer it you for this month. I've had 6 sessions on my arms, legs and upper lip & I think another 2 will do the trick. Also, some people need yearly top-ups after they have completed their sessions.....depends on the person.

hmmmm.....I packed medication: night nurse, prescribed and over the counter stuff, dry food goods, my kitchen cleaning products ( which I just threw in last minute) ....oh and a candle ( which is still a candle) my container was inspected too and I got everything back other than a pair of my expensive sewing scissors...which tbh I can't be bothered to ask them about. I reckon it's hit and miss with some things...depends whether you catch them on a good day :D

The last time I looked into it, you could do on-line teacher assistant courses, which required little or no qualifications. This was a NVQ accredited course. The Cache you can do on-line for £500 (approx 2,500 Dhs?), would this be an option?

I forgot to say that the stand in Ibn Battuta that I got mine from was doing an offer where if you spent 400 dirhams you would get 100 dirhams off - so I went with a friend and we both bought one - should have been 295 each but ended up only being 245 with the discount. whereabouts is the stand? thanks I can't remember exactly but I feel like it wasn't too far from Top Shop - definitely down that end of the mall anyway. Thanks I'll pop in on Sunday :)

My father born and brought up in Pakistan, his family tree goes as far back as Iran.... mum hated Pakistani's...dad wasn't too keen on Indians!!! hahaha They met in Birmingham (UK) hahahaha my dad was " the boy next door" .... they eloped to Bedfordshire :D (mum was Sikh dad Muslim = shunned from family) Spent a few years in Pakistan so I'm deeply connected with my dad's roots....Wish I could say the same about Kenya & India, but my mum passed away when I was a teenager....Wish I had taken the time out to listen to her childhood stories instead of being the rebellious teenager, so many questions , but no-one to answer them :(

Anytime I am feeling down, I remember my friend Darcy. She was a beautiful 20 year old girl who was injured in a head on collision. They had to amputate her legs just above the knee to save her life. Before the accident we all thought Darcy was beautiful, but kind of spacy. I stepped into her hospital room prepared to try to cheer her up. There she was, strapped to a rotating bed, hooked up to IV's. I hesitantly stepped into her view. Darcy's face lit up and she said "Aleeeettaaaa! It's so good to see you! Well, they had to take my legs, and I'm paralyzed from here down. Tomorrow they are going to do surgery and put rods in my spine so I can sit up. But LOOK! I still have my arms! That means I can get myself in and out of a wheelchair and feed myself, and go to the bathroom by myself! Isn't that GREAT!" I was stunned. I spent every day of the next 30 days in the Spinal Care Injury Unit with Darcy. I only saw her get angry once, and it didn't last long. That was 17 years ago and she still inspires me. Recent photos show her on top of a grassy hill, her long blond hair in the breeze, and her smiling suntanned face. She is still in a wheelchair, but she is thankful every day for her blessings. She is a stonger person than me, and I aspire to be more like her. Thank you for sharing that with us Aleta :)

I went out and bought The Power by the author who wrote The Secret....so let's see .... I didnt enjoy or get into this book as i did the secret. but for you i hope you do. I've not read The Secret, but I'd heard such good reviews about it. My friends were raging about it, o I thought I'd get this one to see what the hype is about. I've not read much, but so far I'm not feeling it either.....maybe I'll try and borrow the secret to compare. But right now I'd rather be reading Eat,Pray,Love...which I also got :D

Gosh I get asked that a fair bit....I don't mind at all I guess one of the many reasons I get asked it is because how I look & how I sound are very different! I ain't bothered :) I consider myself being from the country I was born , grew up and hold so many cherished memories & where I'll eventually end up going back to...not from where my parents are. However, where they are from has had an influence on me culturally, & I have a "connection" to those countries. I'd want my children to also know their "roots" and to see the beauty of those countries. It would be interesting to see what our children would say in answer to that question in a few years.

As far as I know you can only get a private PO box which will cost you 250dhs a year. The problem is there seems to be a shortage of boxes in prime locations (I was at the post office the other day and a lady was not impressed when they told her they had a box in Deira for her) The only other option is to use your company's PO box or DH's company PO box. I dont live on the Palm so Im not sure exactly which boxes you are talking about, but if they are blue and white and have the Dubai postal autority logo on them then they are PO boxes. If not then they are most likely private boxes for internal use. Oh! can I use a friends PO Box? I'm only expecting the odd mail here and there .... & I'll check the colour of the boxes next time I remember....I'm thinking they are grey, so not postal :( I used to moan about how nobody writes letters anymore and it's all emails and texts.....but thank goodness for modern technology!!! :) oh and FaceBook :)

What's your point? I was just saying that THERE ARE good Indian curry places in Dubayy Where? I am always so disappointed when I eat Indian here. You get all the worst cuts of meats etc and the Butter chikcen in always discusting. Please where can I go for a good curry? Ravi's, across the road from Burjaman Mall, really lovely, and I am so fussy about my curries. Ravi's is nice!! First time I ever came here a few years back, DH took me to the one in Satwa , & on first impressions I thought it was a grubby greasy spoon cafe type of place.....I was indeed pleasantly surprised. I see they've opened more branches over the years..... :)

hi majoe, i am a new parent, my 2yr old boy had his 1st day today. i was surprised to see the school is so popular and all old parents had good things to say. my boy cried as it was his first day at nursery:-( i hope he settles soon and begins to enjoy the various activities they offer. will keep you posted hmmmm when you say "old parents" what do you mean parents returning with their younger children or "old" as in age wise old? Reason why I ask is because I "passed"by today to check it out, and I was told by the extremely young "head teacher" that the nursery is newly opened....so I just wondered, as it would be nice to her the opinions of other parents. Also it didn't look very new IMHO..... ETA unless of course it's been taken over by new owner....which then I'd understand where the "old parent" was coming from :) lol Plus, I just walked in, door was open & no-one was in reception, it was after 2pm so most the children had left, but still.....I walked right down their corridor to find someone that could help me.....that bit doesn't sit too comfortably with me.... edited by coco pops on 09/10/2011 edited by coco pops on 09/10/2011

Thank you so much for these options. it is the change that he can't handle. Walking between class and Art for example, he can't handle the kids pushing etc. He is also baited. The teacher knows this, but admits she never can catch the culprit. My son is exploding in anger and she can't punish the person who threw the first stone so to speak. However, this is life and my son needs to learn how to handle these social issues. This is where I need help. Thanks for these contacts. I'm going to make more calls this morning. going through this thread I'm thinking "oh my word my DS is going through the same stuff" I was thinking initially it could have become worse because of the move here, but I think it's the underlying issues we need to tackle. He used to get bullied in primary school. I've noticed he is getting a short fuse too in certain situations. But then part of me is wondering whether it's hormonal ( he's 11). I'm confused! At school he is also baited, & more often than not ends up getting the blame for it. DH doesn't seem to think there is an issue and thinks it's all in my head and that I don't understand "boys".....I'm not so sure though. It can become mentally draining at times because DS takes it out on me ( not physically!) i.e he plays up, rebels etc etc. Appreciate all the info on this thread btw and thanks for starting this thread AMW :) edited by coco pops on 06/10/2011

Why not get yourself a pressure cooker, cuts cooking time of stews & lentils etc practically in half. Best purchase I ever made:) I used to have a pressure cooker....never got the hang of it....never got the timings right so would take me longer anyway. Plus they scare the cr@p outta me I always have these visions that it's going to explode all over me!! I've always just cooked my dinner on a gas stove....pastas and stuff take hardly take any time at all.....well they never used to.....

went to the Auto Market today....wow so many cars didn't know where to start! Anyway figured out all the dust covered ones are export cars only :) Found a lovely chap who did say that a Japanese car was probably a better car to go for as parts are reasonably priced compared to the other makes.....GMC also a good bet as it is a very sturdy car, parts can be expensive but it's not often they'll need replacing. So at least we've decided which car we're going for....now to find it :)

I went there today and I was so spoilt for choice and confused as to who to go to! Anyway, ended up buying fruit which I'm going to divide between 3 families...so costing us approx 60 Dirhams each.....not bad for a weeks supply of fresh fruit. I was looking out for cherry tomatoes but couldn't find any & I was a wee bit disappointed in the strawberries this week. Is it the norm to haggle with them? I did notice how the price of some things dropped as soon as we said No, to almost half price.....I wasn't haggling as I'm not so good at it! so DH decided to haggle with everything, some things they agreed on and some things they wouldn't really budge on price.... Thanks for the information on this thread as I would never have gone had I not read this :) it is far for me though so I'll prob not go every week, unless I find regular people to share the fruit round with ....

Saw a little girl in the back of a 4x4 jumping around the other day and wondered when the law comes in for restraint of children? Thought I read it was coming in? It was a recommendation for the law to be introduced and unfortunately this has been the same message for a couple of years now - it's only law to buckle up in the front and to be over 10 years to sit in the front. For anyone interested and doesn't know, I run a campaign about wearing seatbelts and restraints for children. I present at schools, nurseries, colleges, offices, anywhere that will have me! Please take a look at the facebook page here - https://www.facebook.com/BuckleUpInTheBack or the website www.buckleupintheback.com I believe that change CAN happen - if no-one does anything then of course we'll all see the same sort of things on the roads - just by telling 1 other person to Buckle Up or telling your school to book a presentation with me (it's all free) then you are helping to save lives. Redlesley how can I get my DS's school to have you over for a talk? I think it's a fantastic idea, & would love to help promote your campaign at their school :)

Everytime I go into my local Aswaaq I buy the guy who is folding cardboard and loading it onto his bike in the car park something for breakfast. He is always there and always grateful, but never comes to me, only takes if I drive around and pass it to him. Sometimes I give him cash too...he looks tearful. I am afraid that I am the only one who gives him anything. If I don't go for a week I feel bad, and sometimes go over to the shop just to buy him something. I like that IAMVP there are so many people here behind the scenes in lower jobs that don't get the chance of a little extra on top of their wages because they don't get that contact with people.... they get over looked.....they are the ones that in helping them be it money, food simply because they weren't "expecting" it gives me more joy because I've bought a smile to their face ....that's worth so much more to me, than sometimes giving my money to someone who expects it from me simply because I'm an expat..... edited by coco pops on 04/10/2011

My almost 4 year old also has a slight lisp. As much as I find it cute, I do try and work on his sounds and his tongue and mouth movements. Try simple sound making exercises....jolly phonics is a good method to teach your child sounds too. I know Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre has Speech Therapists who you can refer your child to....I think the rate is 360AED an hour too, but I'm not 100% sure. If you want a professional opinion and even ideas as to what to do do at home, they'll guide you in the right direction.
