I do not want to sound sarcastic but not all those people are that poor to give dirhams to left and right. Because of people tipping 100dhs to a taxi driver they become spoiled, they do not appreciate tips which are small and it shouldnt be like that. Example, I take a short taxi drive for 15dhs, I would tip only couple of dirhams. and they do not even say thank you because they expect every tourist/expat looking person to tip them well! I have a rule - tip no more than 10% (plus minus) the total amount and I think it is fair. I have pitty for the poor workers but wait - they all came for better life, as someone said. they chose this life. They send home 2/3 of the money they earn here - they are not poor but they chose to do so - because they buy land there, build houses. They do complain there is no money here but why are they still here??? most of the taxi drivers have been here for 5-10 years. Most of them say they do not like it here. so why are they here? because of money. I had a very honest conversation with one of them. He has not seen his kids for 2years. and I asked him why he was still here - he has ALREADY built his house, got the land. His answer was: to build 2more houses for my kids. you call it poor?! some of them come here under the pretence they are getting a higher wage though do they not?plus most of them are paying off their agency fees? my security man was told he was going to get paid a certain wage but on arrival he was paid nothing as near as that....he's paid 8000AED to come out here and now has to pay that off!!! He's an educated young lad too.....shame.....

I never keep the dirham either. Those dirhams do add up and I know I'd like to have the option to keep it or not. if the trolly storage was closer I might be more inclined to put the cart away and get that dirham back. So, because of my laziness I really do hope that the right guy is getting my dirham. I actually never get the offer to help with the groceries or take the cart and I shop at MoE too! Perhaps this has been covered already, I really don't know, but it is along the same lines as one of the previous posters mentioned. Our gardener asks us for water every other day. I give him a bottle of water and some nice cookies I buy for him,it's the least I can do. I'd do it at home too. The other day I overheard three women I respect talk about what an imposition it was to give the gardener water. I was really shocked and disappinted. 2 days ago our gardener brought some flowers to my yard..."free of charge, I told boss that this is for MY MAAM and she is nice to me". I've been smiling for days. Karma is a good thing! By the way....did my pruning of 20 trees today in the yard. Sweat like I've never sweat, my back is aching so I did 15, took a break then did the rest after. I have nothing but compassion for these guys busting their backs and in this heat! edited by dogcatcher on 04/10/2011 funny I heard a discussion between 2 close people ( by marriage, for I doubt I'd have them as my friends!) who said they'd never give their gardeners or any labourers tea in their mugs & how they've bought separate disposable tea cups..... why do that? that saddened me....

hahaha....not been here very long...but on the days I feel like just packing my bags and going back home I remind myself of the following: * my children are less likely to be offered drugs in school....I hope anyway!!! *my sons are less likely to be involved in the gang culture that is becoming increasingly common/ or get stabbed when out the above 2 may even happen here and I just haven't heard of it, but even though I feel safe here, I'm not sure I feel any safer than I did back home. I will miss clean shopping mall restrooms waking up to sunshine Fridays as a holiday ;) so much variety when food shopping Lulu's cooked food counter....so much choice! so my list is pretty impressive already compared to what I miss from back home :D edited by coco pops on 04/10/2011

I also tip the petrol guys ten dirhams every time You do realise that at least one major chain of petrol stations here does not allow its staff to keep tips, don't you? The uniforms have no pockets so all money has to go into the official company wallets they carry, and it all goes into the company coffers. really? I never noticed that!!! so the tips don't even get shared at the end of the day? I find that odd!!! don't suppose you can say which petrol station it is then?

I don't think anyone has forgotten their humanity...OP was having a bad day, and pms-ing...if the fella hadn't have shown up, she would have been just as cross. It's more the expectation of a tip as a 'right' that annoys people on some days, even if it is 'just' a dirham. A taxi driver got an earful from me the other day, he was speeding, didnt help me with the 6 giant reuasable type shopping bags I had and persisted in delivering me to the house next door to my own, so I then had to lug tons of shopping down the street to my own place, in the sweltering h3ll like heat. And I'm normally the type of person who pays the driver double the fare for that kind of trip ;) Thank you for actually understanding that I was having a bad day & "reading" that I would never begrudge someone a dirham...... I've been to a couple of countries where some people actually "expect" it and can become quite intimidating because they haven't received what they think is their right from us.....I always tip, and if I have received a good service I will even go as far as saying so.....and if the service has been rubbish I'll say it too..... edited by coco pops on 04/10/2011

Have you not seen the film The Terminal with Tom Hanks?????? yeah I know me too....usually quite happily....but sometimes like today when I'm grouchy & I've loaded the car I felt a bit hard done by! no doubt had he not come to take it I would have moaned about that too lol....what can I say :O

I took the kids to watch Smurfs yesterday (which I found smurftastic btw ;D) at the Marina Mall. It was lovely and quiet....it's more expensive than MOE, at AED 50 for an adult, but I think its worth the extra if you want to watch a grown up movie which requires actual listening skills. only wish I could get sweet popcorn instead of caramel.....

Gosh I remember when my DS was learning place value.....boy was it tough on him! I was teaching him the good ole fashioned way plus he used to go to Kumon which was the column method too.....& in school it was the place value way.....it confused him, thus taking him longer to grasp the concept....come year6/ 7 they are doing the column method & he finds it so much easier now.... school did do parent classes though to teach us the new teaching methods....maybe they should do that here too?

I had my 3rd c section around 3.5 years ago and I found it harder this time. I was living in the UK at the time, and luckily I had DH working from home, so he could do the school runs in the first 6 weeks. ( insurance purposes also) Even though they do advise to walk around as much as you can, even though it's advised not to carry heavy weights, you kinda know the limits of your body. I found housework really really hard. I got a cleaner in once a week & I kept all my bare essentials such as nappies, wet wipes spare clothing downstairs, to minimise having to walk up the stairs. I only went up when I had to. I kept my Moses basket downstairs too. I noticed with my third c section , I had to take painkillers for a longer period of time. Take plenty of rest as and when you can. I know this is probably difficult for you with 2 little ones, but accept any help offered to you, because it'll benefit you. Ask DH to help with the bed-time routine. As I said, you know your body and just go with what your body tells you....Hope you recover quickly.

Sorry, I know its an old post, but I'm new here and I'm catching up. I didn't know they used the word Handicapped anymore!!! That word annoys me, as does a few more I wouldn't want to repeat:/: I believe in people first. which is why I place more emphasis on the word "has" e.g my son "has" Down Syndrome. After all he has a name, use it first to describe my son. Never used to bother me before, but it does now, don't know why, but it does, probably because I am biased and I don't see my childs disability. But I know some people don't use it to intentionally hurt me, it's when it comes from someone who should know better i.e a teacher, I really do wonder! Also, the word Special needs, I say it myself, but you know, why is my child anymore special than the rest of my children? He's not!!! He gets treated the same, he just has additional needs. So I've stopped using the " he has special needs" line too. But I'm not too hyped up on that.....yet! Anyway, IMO people here will learn to accept people with different abilities within the workplace, they just need to be exposed to it more and educated in a positive light. Maybe then the families that "hide" away their children, may feel that it's ok to integrate their children within society, that it's not a curse, that they do have abilities....given the chance . It's part of educating society. So, I personally would have no issue if I were to be served by someone with a disabilty....or differently abled( I'm liking that term ). In fact it would be inspiring to see that the future is looking bright for my children :) Must read this Maccy D post :D edited by coco pops on 27/09/2011

Actually, not sure if they were the same boys playing with the pointer - but those got shouted and hissed at by me as well. Argh. Middle-east. Errr....actually this exact kind of behaviour also happens in "western" countries. England to be exact....the only difference is management will do something about it, & ,if they can't,we do get our money back.

Totally selfish! Guess they don't teach respect, manners and decency at the schools here! didn't think it was a teacher's job to teach manners.....it's down to the parents!! Mind you I'm forever telling my children off if they misbehave in public & then you get the parents that are totally oblivioius to their children's bad manners! What infuriates me though is when you tell your child to say sorry & you still get met with an icy stare and they look down at you ( I find unfortunately mostly from fellow expats ) ....I do think & often mutter "up yours you bat they're kids" :D edited by coco pops on 24/09/2011

Growing up in oz it was a very common word. You get to school when no one is there, 'I was a nigel this morning' (by yourself/no friends) Someone is sitting alone, others yell 'Nigel!' It is also a name, hence auto correct changing it from nigel to Nigel, an Indian name if I'm correct (we later had an Indian boy start whose name was Nigel, poor fella) hahaha bought back memories!! I used to have a crush on a boy in primary school called Nigel, funnily enough he was from Australia. He must really hate his parents for calling him that! I wonder if he turned out to be a *right Nigel*?

Thank you for that. It has given me food for thought. I, unlike a few of the parents I know here, doesn't send my child to one of the "expensive" schools here. I was struggling with my emotions that perhaps we aren't giving him the best in education by doing this. But then, as the article suggests, paying a lot more doesn't entirely ensure this. Shouldn't it be more about the child's emotional well-being at school? After all, regardless of which school they go to & how much we pay, if they are happy and encouraged positively, they will flourish. Back in the UK many of my generation went through the local state school system, and they have done really well for themselves. Of course, there a lots that didn't fare well and sponge off the government :D edited by coco pops on 23/09/2011

so, say someone offers to help with after school childcare, and you can't pay them for *legal reasons* , can you buy them a small gift as a thank you? Or would that also be seen as a payment? It may seem like a silly question to some, but genuinely, if someone were to offer me after school help & I couldn't pay them, I'd want to thank them somehow......

We had it done privately by an Iraqian doctor for £80 who came to our house and explained the whole procedure to both DH & myself. I'm not [i'>entirely[/i'> sure that's actually legal... sounds terribly like a backstreet ab0rtion procedure! He has a clinic too & also does home visits. We opted for home visits twice & did the clinic the third time round. Very professional & comes with nurse in tow.....He practices at the local hospital.

OK so I try and be positive and take a day at a time, but there are times when I think I'm just not "glam" enough to be here ...I'm sure people mistake me for the maid on the days when I just can't be bothered to dress up....which are most days! :) I suppose it doesn't help either when you hear negative stuff about the people all being superficial here. I try not to go down that line and take people for what they are....but boy some people are just so hard to have a conversation with, it's like they just can't be bothered to talk to a newbie:( I've totally gone out of my comfort zone and joined a group of people at a gathering & said hi blah blah blah & yes they say hi back then go on to totally ignore me and carry on their conversation without even trying to include me. I dunno, because I'm not that type of person myself I find it hard when people are like that to me....if that makes sense? I find it gets harder when you're older....IMO anyway ... Oh well tomorrow is another day & I shall stay positive.....after all the stress I had moving here, there's no way I'm moving back.....not yet anyway!

We had all our boys done within the month of them being born in the UK. My youngest was only 7 days old.We had it done privately by an Iraqian doctor for £80 who came to our house and explained the whole procedure to both DH & myself. It healed within the week ( we had a plastic ring which dropped off). They should give you an aneasthetic ointment to apply to the area with each nappy change to ease any discomfort, but we only used this for the first couple of days. Also laying them in a bath of salt water will help keep any infections at bay ( tbh we only did this on the first day). All my boys were fine, in fact the youngest who had it done the earliest, was the easiest. They cry for a few seconds when they have the injections, but after that they should be fine. Good Luck, it's always daunting for us mothers to have to watch our young ones go through it, but honestly, you'll be fine. ;) edited by coco pops on 21/09/2011
