No. I dont tip. She owns the salon and is not an employee. Agree, but saying that I have never tipped, I believe they charge enough! I did the first time I had my hair cut here....but I won't tip again as they charge enough. I never tipped my last hairdresser, but a Christmas I'd buy her a bottle of wine and give her a tip then. Probably do the same here....but without the wine :)

My husband has also taken a very active role with the children....he helps out on occasion with the housework, & he cooks a mean breakfast :) ( even if he leaves the kitchen like a tip!) His father on the other hand was raised to not lift a finger, that it was the woman's job to cook, clean & raise the children. Thankfully my DH has not taken after his father. Most DH's friends are the same too as are my friends husbands...so I suppose the Asian attitude is changing somewhat for the better :) Even though there is always room for improvement ;)

Our DS1 had been pestering us when he was in year 6 for a BB. Most of the boys had one in his class at the time, but there was no point as he didn't actually need it. So we came to an agreement that if he got good levels in his SAT's we'd buy him the phone, & for his 11th birthday we'd get him the contract so that he could use the BBM. Initially he was bbm'ing all the time & I was a bit worried as to the safety aspect of strangers bbm'ing my son, so I'd check his phone every now and then!!

DH also went to the meeting that the shoreline Association held....not many people turned up. Pity....quite a lot of people seem to be upset by Nakheels actions.....

DH went to the clubhouse yesterday with some prospective tenants....& they weren't allowed onto the beach area. Even when DH showed them the letter from the homeowners Association!!! The staff said that they hadn't been informed by management so until then they weren't letting any guests onto the beach without passes!!

DH called RERA today to lodge a complaint against Nakheel....they only have one person in the complaints department, who wasn't even at her desk for most of the day!! BIG SIGH! Our security guard is really nice, I felt bad when a couple of guys pushed him to one side yesterday. At the end of the day it's not their fault, it's those fat men at the top....the ones earning all the bucks !

Really no words for the stupidity too cos nobody is wanna buy or rent if they carry this c**p on. You are right Coco pops, beaches have been very quiet. How's it going CP? Never managed to meet up did we? No we didn't lol! did you get to go to the coffee mornings? I went to a couple, then just got busy after that with the in-laws coming and going.

we had the same....DH went to submit documents today, only to be told WE have to go to DEIRA to get documents stamps & WE have to pay AED160!!!! They are seriously having a laugh....thing is most people living here are against all this. Anyway,we've not heard anything back from the shoreline residents association in regards to the meeting they were supposed to have had with RERA....sent a few emails and they've not replied..... Dunno what else we can do......one of the security guards said that the beaches have been more or less empty recently too... Should probably look into where to move once our contract expires, 'cos I'm not sure I want to give my DH hard earned Dirhams to Nakheel that's for sure!

How sad :( What happens when an accident happens? Do they do an investigation and will the driver be prosecuted etc if he was found speeding? I've noticed such an increase in people racing in their sports cars with other drivers....drives me mad. Only yesterday I was driving home having picked up the children, and a car from behind suddenly sped up & cut up in front of me!! He was so near I could have easily hit the back of his car, scared the living daylights out of me! I know why he did it....we'd both just pulled out of the petrol station and I was probably driving too slow for his liking! Doesn't justify what he did though!

a lot of people do have a better lifestyle than back in their home countries but thats not the majority by a long way. what gets my goat is family coming to visit and saying things like, oh they will pay for the meal they can afford it !my son.i.l. is rich (NO!) he works hard for his money. if we were rich we wouldnt be working !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or a choice one my mother saying in earshot to people or family on the phone, its like being in a 5 star hotel with all the service in the house and all the food etc - WHAT SERVICE, its me doing all the work and washing and feeding and running you around ARGHHHHHHHHHH! hear hear Gosh I thought I was the only one that felt this way!

I so understand where you are coming from! I was thinking this same thing the other day! It becomes tiring when I hear people say " you're living the high life etc etc" when in actual fact we aren't! This is our first year here so we aren't planning on making any savings until next year! I remember when my father immigrated to the UK, everyone from his home country assumed he was "loaded" and would ask him for money, and everytime he or any of us would visit, they would produce a long shopping list. They still do it to this day!!!

DH bought a panasonic VCR/DVD player and converted all our VCR's to DVD. It does take a while but it's worth it. He shared the cost with his brothers , so it worked out cheaper all round, and they all got to convert their memories onto dvd's. The great thing is we got to keep it :) it's a bulky ugly machine in comparison to the slim dvd players on the market but hey ho :)

hehehe reading this I'm having a chuckle to myself...I've been driving my 'silver' hired car for the past 2 months now...going into my third month ( because of course now we can buy a car we can't decide on which BIG INTIMIDATING car to buy lol) didn't realise having the air con on slowed the car down though....that's why it takes me forever to pick up speed! I thought it was an automatic thing having come straight from driving a manual or stick shift .... what's that saying about the size of a mans car ;) what would be the female version on that?

I'd like to say when I first started this post, I was pretty much on a downer. Leaving my family, friends, home and a lot of sentimental things behind just made me feel so sad and empty. At times I'd thought I'd made a big mistake in coming here. However, since then, I've just changed my whole way of thinking, & it's making a positive difference to how I'm feeling. I still smile and say "hi" to people in the lift. I still say Thank you to the cashiers who don't say thank you back. Sometimes it's returned with a hi back, sometimes not. It doesn't matter to me it's no different from being back home. In fact today my DS wouldn't leave a shop until the cashier said bye to him lol....at first when he said it, he never got a response, but when he said it the second time loud and clear, he got a "bye" back, with a smile ;) It does take time....I still have "off" days, I just have to keep reminding myself why we are here...& I know we aren't here forever, so I intend to make the most of this experience and learn from it. It's a learning curve for all us newbies ;)

I try very hard not to make assumptions & always remind myself not too, especially, when I think I can see people making assumptions about me in this country. It's human nature IMO There will always be cultural differences in everyone....we are what we are.....not inferior or superior to anyone.....

Can you buy tea tree oil here? I found adding a few drops to the children's shampoo bottle has kept the buggers at bay :) Yes, where do you find tea tree oil? Some pharmacy's here carry organic shampoos and conditioners, I can't remember the name of it. But it comes in a greenish bottle, if you ask the pharmacy they will know. Vosene?
