I recently hired a car in the UK, I was asked for a utility bill, which I do not have, I said we lived overseas and produced my passport, the hire car rep, didn't question me, or even said it was illegal to drive. How do other visitors manage to hire cars then???? with an uae licence. I don't want an UAE license thou. TBH I have never had an issue when hiring, I have even used my Dubai address on the hire paperwork, and haven't been asked for any other license. I don't think the issue is with the hiring of the vehicle it's is you have an accident and you are not a UK resident and then the insurance co will do everything not to pay, I have checked with a couple of insurance places and they really don't know the implications of your residency status and therefore assume as you have a UK licence it's ok. If you are 'resident' in the UAE then you are not resident in the UK. In actual fact, when I left the UK I was told by a very helpful lady at the DVLA that my UK licence should have been surrendered once my UAE one came through, or at least the UAE authorities should have taken it off me. There was a really good thread about a year ago about this and it went on to discuss UK citizens who are UAE residents feeling they were entitled to NHS treatment (yes you are entitled to emergency treatment) but I seem to recall that even if you have a house in the UK you are not entitled to receive regular NHS treatment if you are non resident. That's what I have been told.

Just driven down Emirates Rd which was a little scary! Why do people put their hazard lights on though instead of their normal lights? Because they are stupid! Not sure if there is such a thing as a highway code here and if there is well they obviously haven't read it! (unless it's legit here to do it, which wouldn't surprise me) - rant over :-)

We are having our pool fixed for the second time, they said it would take 5 days and we are on day 10 and I reckon if they get on with it (nobody arrived today!) it's another 3 days at least. You'll only know you have a leak when they fill it and it looses water on a daily basis anything from 2 tiles to goodness knows how many. They then have to empty the pool, pressure test and take off all the tiles, re waterproof, re tile, grout and fill. This is very frustrating as the two lots of guys we've had in are basically cowboys and really don't know what they're doing! If the pool is empty when you look at a property the chances are that it has been empty over 2 years and the grout will have cracked meaning it will need to be fixed. I don't know anyone here on the villa that hasn't had to have theirs fixed, but don't let that put you off The Villa, we love it. Having said that we're still here and just renewed our lease for another year as we really love the villa and it's location.

we are in a 4 bed with a pool at the Villa, cheapest bill is 1,040 per month, no watering of garden and 3 in the house no ac on (February) up to 5,000 3 people in the house, watering the garden and ac on, however we are very careful with all electricity and water consumption. <em>edited by cymraes on 11/04/2012</em>

but you do run the risk of burning out the pumps I've heard, we're at the Villa and have topped up for about 3 hours and then the tank is completely empty meaning that you are without water in the house. To fill our pool would take at least 10 hours via DEWA and. If you're using your water as normal then the filling of the pool will bump you into the orange or even the red sectors of your water bill which can work out expensive. Loube if you do fill via DEWA do you inform them in advance and get permissions as such for this set timeframe? What I really want to know is there a ban on tankers on Ranches?

welcome, Dubai is what you make it, we love it - some things are really frustrating and take ages to sort others just work out straight away. Try not to stress about things if you can, they have a funny way of doing some things here but on the whole we've muddled through. Enjoy your new wonderful life in the sun :-)

am in the same boat as you Birki, am hoping to go home last minute but the prices are the same as for the summer hols. I just ran a booking though Royal Brunei and it's the same price as Emirates 4,250aed! The cheapest Ive seen is about 3,200 Qatar and KLM but long lay overs as you say in Qatar ..... back to the drawing board, will update if I find something reasonable. Good luck!

Oops ... the stick blenders that I've used are supposed only to be used for blending/pureeing etc, if you're mixing cookie dough etc you'll need a proper food mixer. Hope this helps.

I was at the Gold and Diamond park last week and several shops had some lovely loose tanzanite. If your DinL has a design in mind I am sure they could make it up. I know for sure GB Jewellers had some nice pairs of stones in the window. Hope this helps

thanks Mum2K that's a great post ... will go to the plant souk and have a look. Hopefully our Damas have not done too much damage, they've only been in just over a year so will try to get them sorted. Does anyone know if you need to clear the whole root growth or just if you take out the tree the roots will die? We had bindweed in the UK and it just strangled everything and even by cutting the main bit of the plant the trails still grew! Not sure how LL will take it but I guess if we explain situation he'll see the light. Does anyone have any official letter/directive or the notice from Emaar so I have some clout to show the LL? Thanks in advance

We have these trees in our garden at The Villa planted by the LL, I didn't know the damage they can cause ... Can anyone suggest an alternative tree/bush that I could replace them with? We're about to have our grass removed and replaced with patio and gravel so might as well replace the damas while we're doing that. Thanks.

Emlsnre, thanks for your kind offer ... and thoughts for DS, he's back at the clinic on Monday for more tests and bloods, nothing serious. DH has insisted that I take DS back to the UK over the easter hols to visit my folks for some R&R, which is just what I need :-) Just need to find a reasonably priced flight ..... All quiet now, latest visitor on the plane outa here, am having a relaxing day doing nothing much and rummaging round in the fridge for what to make for supper from the various left overs. Have a great weekend ladies x

A few years ago we hired a Renault Espace (7 seats) from Thrifty took it from the UK on a road trip through France, Belgium and Germany then drove it back to the UK. Was no problem at all, we had 3 of us on the insurance so we could share the driving. I'd ping an email off to the major UK car hire companies and ask them, they even sorted out the Green Card (not sure if you still need that).

thank you each one of you all, it's just been a long slog, elle13211 yes little things just grate after a while. The thing that makes it feel the worst is that my dear old parents can no longer travel out to us, when they did they did little things round the house, a bit of washing up, helping with the meal, a cup of coffee there, my mother loves to iron especially DS' things. My parents are 20 years older than DH's parents which really grates against me. DesertRose, I agree we should cover the costs but when I go back to my home country I still buy the shopping, cook the food and run around after my parents in law plus 'treating' them too, we never seem to get any parenting back from them. My dear elderly parents wouldn't dream of treating us that way, even DH says so. I guess we just have to grin and bear it. Sorry ladies, just need to dump my rant! Poor DH, already had me bending his ear, lucky thing he's at work this evening. I've had my separated parents in law in two batches, one for a month and now one for nearly 3 weeks - so that's 7 weeks of parents in law since just before Christmas. I know I am a SAHM, and that I have nothing better to do that run around after everyone. I'm just so close to tears that I can hardly contain myself. I've cooked and ministered to them with only one night out of babysitting by both of them. Everyday I've shopped for food with not so much as as 'I'll get that', thankfully it's payday today and the coffers are pretty empty. Poor DS has been quite poorly with glandular fever, he also has something that the doctors can't detect so I am worried about that too. Wish I could have a holiday fully catered for, for 3 weeks and only spend 200 pounds or so ..... no such luck. Sorry for the moan, guess I should just pour a G&T and grin and bear it! Rant over and G&T about to be poured (oh and apparently I drink too much too!! Too bloomin' right..... <em>edited by cymraes on 28/03/2012</em>

Friends ours had their new second had car tested by the dealer at Tasjel I think it was 250 aed for the test and it was very thorough and brought up lots of issues with one vehicle they wanted to buy. The dealer took it and it was impartial. Hope this helps

Will he have good days (today) and bad days (yesterday) or will we see progress for the better on a daily ish basis? Today he is just a bit run down rather than flat on his back on Saturday!

Poor chap. Get the school to confirm he can redo his DofE just to put his mind at rest. Keep him and you calm with lots and lots and lots of fluids, plenty of rest. Absolutely no pushing the boundaries from him. From my experience he will have good days and bad and will be shattered. Favourite foods, plenty of TLC and dont forget if his is well enough for computer games he is well enough to do a page or two of school work ;-) Might be an idea to get the school to advise parents as GF can be quite contagious and teens are very susceptible. Thanks for the tips. Yes will get on the case of the DofE as the GF was not diagnosed until this week, so they just thought he'd given up! Am keeping him off tomorrow too, I have asked sch to send some short pieces of work home if he is home for longer. GP said that he was past the contagious side, but will indeed remind his tutor that some may have been in near contact with him before we knew the diagnosis. Thanks again

thanks all for your replies. As I said he's been under the weather a while - but silly me didn't get it checked out just thought he was a growing kid!. He didn't complete his Duke of Edinburgh bronze last weekend which he sailed through the trial one, it must have been the GF, he was devastated and complained of back pain during the exped - must have been his liver causing pain? Hope we haven't done any long term damage :-( Today he's had some macaroni cheese and plenty of fluids and looks and seems much better, less tired and no temp - really what I want to know is will he have good and bad days or can I look for steady progress of recovery? Thanks again all, I had a school friend who was off for months

Ambar, Parasol etc are expensive .... there is a very poor selection of affordable garden furniture here which is quite surprising seeing as though we all live outside for a lot of the year. I think the UK has a far better selection and caters to all pockets .... bring on Argos/B&Q etc!

also on the Umm Suqueim road is Parasol, they have up market garden furniture. There are a few shops that sell garden furniture on the Umm Suqueim road, up from SZR towards the Al Khail road, there is also a big Marina furniture shop too.

Our situation was opposite to yours, DH has AD visa and lives (and works) in Dubai - he had to get a letter of no objection from his company and one from the Khalifa City police station in AD to process the licence. Give MMI/A&E a call they're quite helpful: http://www.mmidubai.com/
