The way to cut down on your electricity is to do your washing in the evening. Also put your dishwasher on in the evening Mainly after 8pm.I tried it for 3 months to see if there was a difference. What a surprise I got. We are lucky enough not to pay housing fees. But have managed to cut down around AED400 on DEWA. We pay around AED300-AED400 per month for a 4 bed villa. Not used the A/C at all yet, we have got reflective windows so the villa stays really cool. I hope you don't mind me asking, but at which location do you live? We are in a 4 bed at The Villa, very frugal with all the electrics (water is a bit of a prob as we have a leaking pool!) but what is the electricity portion on average? I firmly believe it depends which location you live at ... I was told that DEWA tend to target the expat areas (Palm/Meadows/Springs/Ranches etc etc).

A diet that you can live with constantly and then use it to maintain once you've reached your goal weight. Personally Weight Warchers has worked for me, you eat proper food, fits in with family life, and it's quite easy to follow - I love home cooked food and I can adapt recipes. Although I do fall off the routine of it, if I want to shift the lbs I try to stick to it. You need to get exercise too, I power walk with poochie an hour every weekday, but my down fall is vino! It works for me, if only I could discipline DH! Good luck ETA I need to lose a stone before the summer, but willpower is lacking! <em>edited by cymraes on 11/03/2012</em>

If you're coming from AD I would book something near the Burj Khalifa (can recommend the Al Manzil or the Qamardeen which are both withing walking distance of Dubai Mall). It's only another 10 mins added to the journey to the sevens stadium vs the Silicon Oasis Premier Inn. There will be a lot of taxis going to and from - plus they normally run a bus to and from the event back to several locations in town. Check out the organisers website or someone on here will be able to give more detail. In my opinion, the Premier Inn at Silicon Oasis is a bit on its own and if you're here for the weekend that would be a bit of a pain. I live at The Villa which is the other side of the Al Ain Road to Silicon Oasis, we are going to the concert and it will take us about 15 mins to get there from here. See you there! Hi We are heading there too from The Villa. Trying to decide what time to leave, do you know whereabouts the buses are running too and from? Apologies emlsnre just seen your post, we're getting a lift and leaving The Villa about 7ish, not sure about the buses, they normally run from Marina/Downtown but I have no details of them, so sorry for the delay ... just trying to decide what to wear!

Welcome to EW! Whilst I can't offer lots of help, if you are looking at St Andrews (is that part of the British Inst of Dev Learning??) a friend of mine has a much older child there and I believe their fees are in the region of 80,000 dirhams a year. Where on the spectrum is your son? That will have great bearing on which schools would take him. If he needs one to one you might find it extremely difficult to have him in a mainstream school, there is little support within the schools for children who have learning/behavioural difficulties. My son was diagnosed borderline autistic at age 10, he is now 13 - we have changed schools once and we are starting to finally see some improvement. He needs a very small amount of help - the help he needs is keeping focussed/on task and less often now has issues with dealing with problems/situations in class. He is under the guidance of the learning support tutor but does not have one to one, or a shadow support. All shadowing costs, I believe in any mainstream school here, would need to be paid for by the parents as with any external support. My son attends a GEMS school who have a very good achievement centre set up, I believe several of the GEMS schools have this (just to give you a ball park figure my son is Year 9 and his school fees are 62,000 dirhams per year. He was for his first two years in high school at quite a high calibre non profit school here in Dubai, but did not do well with very little support, however I know of another mildly autistic child who is now at this school and he is receiving help, however he can cope with the day to day school. Can I point you in the direction of Fiona Coutts, do a search on here, she is an educational consultant and could give you great advice on choosing a school most suitable and which schools might have openings. School places are difficult to find, esp British Curriculum, and even harder if a child needs help. Dubai is not geared to special needs/education. Most school websites will outline the fee structure (cheaper for the younger ones etc) and some will give info on special needs. Again I would go and see them, perhaps engage Fiona Coutts, and of course the lovely ladies here on EW who are a wealth of knowledge. I wish you well and hope you find a good environment for your children.

Hi there, DS just home from school and in floods of tears, lost/misplaced phone at school. Have given him the lecture about keeping things safe and it's the risk we take, taking these things to school. The phone is locked and on silent... hi all, just bumping as LL is coming over on Sunday with the contract renewal and I want to speak to him about maintenance contracts, have the numbers for: JWFI, Space, Tooltime .... any other suggestions are gratefully received. ETA - JWFI don't do annual maintenance contracts, they will do ac maint but only the unit (no duct cleaning) for 350 per unit on the roof. They do not have 24 call out, their working hours they said were 9-6, I asked if I had water coming through my ceiling at 1am would they come out "no" she said "we would come out as near to 9am" ...... <em>edited by cymraes on 29/02/2012</em>

I got a great deal on a Siemens washer-drier and dishwasher and am very happy with both. The wash capacity of the Siemens is 5kgs which works well for me as I am big into sorting loads... Have to say I had a combination washer dryer when first married, and never liked it - it couldn't cope with the full washing load to dry and the capacity was small (5kg). OP if you have a family and want a dryer too I would recommend separate machines as the capacities are bigger and you can run them at the same time, ie having two loads on the go at a time - essential with a family in my book. Hope this helps.

Da iawn yn wir Wyddfa! I don't get to speak the lingo much as I speak English to my (Welsh first language) parents! Perhaps your suggestion may be lost here as we don't have much eira! I was thinking .... "Rhydd i bawb ei farn" might not go down to well although not rude, am erring on "yr hanner Cymraeg yw'r hanner gorau" as DS is half Welsh - I would have to explain to him what it meant .... but looking for something quite witty before I head off to the tshirt printers! Takes me about 24 hours to click into the lingo back home, small North Wales village then DH accuses me of speaking like a trog - how rude of him!!

I'm currently having some made by Garnesh, he's mentioned a lot here on EW. For a 3 seat sofa and 2 chairs, 5 scatter cushions (rattan suite) with new base 15cm depth foam (we're using the old foam from the backs and scatters which is only 12 months old but gone to look really ropey bought from Ace) it's 2,200aed - the fabric I have chosen looks very durable and is outside furniture. I ordered last week and they will be ready on the 1st March, will report back. Garnesh was recommended to me by a personal friend who has used him for years for furnishings and curtains. His number is 050 795 0748 - he is very pleasant, not pushy, will give you a price in minutes and comes to your house, he even likes dogs!

Generally, in my experience, there is no great difference in price on the same model in different shops, think the prices are almost 'fixed'. Emax have a good selection (there is one in Mirdif City Centre) and their prices seem good. I have a Siemens one, with not too many programmes as I only use 30, 40 and 50 degs and don't need a delay etc, was once told the more functions you have the more there is to go wrong with it. I personally like a fast spin (min 1200 rpm) to aid drying both on the clothes horse or in the tumble dryer. Can't remember how much we paid but it was not very expensive. It's been a good machine, in it's 3rd year now and gets used at least once or twice a day and on constantly at the weekends. If it went bang tomorrow I would have no hesitation in replacing it with the same model. BTW I have it in the laundry room so noise, although it's not too loud, isn't a problem for us. First year DS I went for 5 weeks, 4 days visiting my sister then just over 2 weeks at my parents in their homes and two weeks when DH came over and we had a week away in a hotel with father in law and grandmother in law - it was great only I wish we'd had a week on our own (me, DH and DS). Last year, second year, 4 days at my sister's, 2 weeks at my parents (inc day trips to see mother in law who we don't stay with) on my own with DS and then 10 days flitting around the rest of the UK with DS keeping everyone else (ie the in laws) happy - not so enjoyable. Especially as DH wasn't able to join us and I had to do the in laws: brother & family, father in law & mother in law who were at the same location but have been separated for nearly 20 years and barely speak to each other) then a 400 mile round trip in a day to see grandmother in law, had to do all these on my own which was stressful and of course 'cos I live in Dubai, expensive for me! Never again!! This year or third, planning 2 weeks at my parents (my mother won't fly anymore) then DH will join me for hopefully 2 weeks and we can do his clan together and hopefully have a few days on our own. Would rather go somewhere and just relax but with my mum not flying I really have and want to go home to see her and my dad <em>edited by cymraes on 26/02/2012</em>

as I posted on a previous thread - we and two sets of friends used Supreme Way 04 320 5195, Alex. Very good service at a reasonable price. A friend used them last week and they were excellent they and we are in The Villa, they even put her birthday cards back up! From personal experience they would be my first choice, but you may be cutting it fine if you want to move next week, they do get booked up. Not sure I would be happy with a maid having 1 hour's training to look after a newborn? When DS went to nursery in the UK all the nursery nurses had completed at least a two year full time course with qualifications. And 10 years ago I paid 400 UK pounds month for the privilege, which was the going rate. I know he was in a safe environment with qualified people, think long and hard about leaving your most precious gift with an unqualified person. <em>edited by cymraes on 22/02/2012</em>
