I have an LG condenser dryer had it 6 years and use it most days - i don't like the smell of the laundry dried outside plus it dries like cardboard outside! LG tumbler is great but have say the LG dishwasher I have is awful! edited by cymraes on 16/04/2015

I was looking for the same, Ikea seem to have switched over to halogen/LCD. I finally got screw in and bayonet ones at Claus Olsen in Mirdiff City Centre - looks like the old style are being phased out - I have found the energy saving ones don't last as long as in the UK and blow frequenty, despite the higher cost.

I agree with Daza you budget is very very low and I doubt you will get anything worthwhile for that cost, if at all. There have been threads on here enquiring about medical insurance for maids ... Which I think the annual cost is that Daza suggests

I Ask you husbands employer if the 16000USD salary is inclusive of housing, insurance etc. or exclusive? Sometimes the companies are sneaky and they offer big salary but they dont tell you its inclusive meaning when all the other things are deducted your basic take home salary isn't all that much. Read ALL the small print. Take care and good luck. Absolutely agree with Asti, salary seems high with a very low housing allowance... get it all stated in an offer/contract letter. I have previously worked in HR and we had to state: broken down monthly - basic salary, allowances, school places, medical insurance etc in the contracts. DH's offer and contract had it all listed, basic, allowance, school fee amount, utilities, transport, mobile phone, medical, flights, relocation allowance, furniture allowance (every 3 years), end of service gratuity etc. If you've just got your 57k AED a month as one bucket of cash you will need to budget wisely - and if it does include housing, or even not, make sure you get housing in advance rather than in 12 instalments, the same properties have various prices, as others have mentioned, depending on how many instalments you pay. It's a big move, and from my own personal experience it's getting very costly to live here - no increase in allowances for housing or school fee allowance for us in 6 years, yet the costs have increased every year - just do your homework before you jump in x edited by cymraes on 11/04/2015

You say you are happy to take an admin role, like others have said these are often low paid (compared to the U.S./UK) as many from the Indian subcontinent the and the Philippines are willing to take a very low salary in comparison, often they are highly qualified from their home countries. The high powered PA roles which command the 15k+ salaries will need a proven PA background with often long hours. - no overtime. Companies are tightening the belt - honestly they don't care what you earned previously (I have been working for 4 years here in Dubai on half my UK salary) not ideal, thankfully DH's package allows me to take the drop in pay ... I have to accept the salary offered. Don't get me wrong ... You may be qualified but if a company can hire for less they will, sadly there are lots of fish in the pond with suitable qualifications and experience who are happy to take less salary! You can't hold them to ransom, they don't worry about being politically correct - they want to pay as little as possible. My advice is to polish your LinkedIn profile, and network as much as possible wherever you can - I have had 4 emails this month offering a meeting to meet and discuss my resume via LinkedIn ... Good luck :-)

They've got a sale on at Pottery Barm at the moment, saw some nice ones there in Dubai Mall today, but didn't catch the price. Yes they have the Dartington ones in Spinneys at Silicon Oasis - classic simple style and quite reasonably priced. My only tip if you buy ones that are dishwasher proof don't get really tall ones, I can't get them to fit or wash sparkly in our machine ... but they look lovely (crate and barrel!)

We have a chap who comes 3-4 times a week, to trim, tidy up and wash the cars, he's been coming 5 years now - he loves our old Poochie - and always closes the gate and ensures he's safe, his team however are petrified of Poochie (big and black - but a gentle soul) and despite several talking to's, don't close the gate - so much so that the top chap has told them he will fire them if anything happens to Poochie! Our chap doesn't have a key, but generally comes in the mornings when we are at work. We pay 500 a month - pool guys also terrified of Poochie so we keep him in. There are lots of gardeners, give them a minth's trial then review would be my advice, this is what we did at our previous villa and it worked well when we found the one we liked.

I had 3 years at home when we arrived in Dubai - when I went back to work, which was my choice, I was so ready to do so. Although I didn't go back into a senior role like I had in the UK. I put on my confident persona, listened to what was going on, and got stuck in. She will be amazed how quickly you just slot back in. Don't let her use her SAHM experience as a negative thing, for me it was a positive experience and I told people so, it felt like it was time well spent and I gained lots of other experience, and it gave me time to reset my goals, rather than the rat race rut we can fall into. The only sort of negative thing was it made me realise what a fab job and company I worked for in the UK! What I didn't expect was that I would be so tired! Good luck to your friend x

We use www.earlybird.ae They deliver a variety of brands of water, soft drinks and some groceries, they are in our area on a Wednesday and deliver on that day for free, they call me on a Tuesday for my order... If you need urgent delivery, I think they charge 10aed. Not sure if they rent out the dispensers but you could call them, never had a prob in 4 years - they have an on line catalogue on the website

AM 86 I wish you well, yes it seems like we are are giving you worst picture but believe me Dubai is not as worldly wise as we would like to think it is - it has tested most of us to the limit at some time. I am an ex RAF wife and thought that after 23 years with a husband in several war zones had thrown everything it had to give me, but Dubai had thrown several new curved balls. As others have said nothing is black and white those grey areas are everywhere - chill, if this is what you really want then jump through the hoops you need to, if you have any doubts then life will be a challenge - you can't change it (even if you think it's unjustified and unfair) Dubai is here for its own reasons - embrace them or let go, personally we've loved it (battle scars and all) but it's not for everyone Good luck with your planning - there are a good core of ladies on this forum who offer honest and true advice - take it x

DS is an only child, I had a traumatic birth and never had the urge to have another (well I had a wobble about 18 months ago but that was the only time) I'm 47 now and DH is 17 - never regretted only having the one. I asked DS about a year ago if he'd have liked a brother or sister - a blunt 'no', he's happy and said he likes it just him, mum, dad and the dog! I was married at 21, loved being a family just me and DH, then DS was planned after 10 years of marriage. It works for us and I wouldn't change a thing xx

can anyone suggest nursery assistant job.as i am a housewife And dont have experiences.and i am just 12 pass only.and indeed to join. To be registered with the KHDA which all TAs are, you will need a minimum of a high school certificate. To work in a good school you will need to have a good command of English to be able to support teaching and learning within the classroom environment.

Hi, my son is high functioning autistic he had a shadow support years 10 and 11 at 45,000aed - this was not full time. I think full time is 65,000aed at our school GEMS DSO, I know they do take children who need support but don't know if they limit numbers - GEMS appear to be the most inclusive in my experience. Shadow was not qualified, but supported by the SEN team. They receive a very small salary, think the fees only just cover. Don't forget this charge is in top of tuition fees and all outside therapies, assessments will also be paid for separately. DH's company make no additional contribution on top of our sch allowance, which doesn't cover our fees. With regard to special schools from my own experience (know someone with a severely disabled child) I don't think they are any way near to what you might be used to in the UK I hope this helps, as someone said, inclusion is still a very young concept here in Dubai and at the time we moved DS was not having shadow support in school, all that was put into force here in Dubai. It is a struggle emotionally, however in our case it was worth our move, however Ds' difficulties are quite low grade compared to statemented children. Good luck x

You could apply to schools directly, not all will give a visa though as support/shadow teachers at our school GEMS DSO generally are on local contracts (sponsored by husband so no visa for yourself) however salary is about 5,000 aed with only medical insurance as an additional benefit. You may want to try others schools where the package might be different. But I think within GEMS it probably is the same deal. I can only speak for the school that DH attends, he had a shadow teacher in the past. Also do you have educational field qualifications? This could put you in a stronger position.

Hi welcome! I am a working mum but my child is in Year 12, I stayed at home for 3 years when we arrived (DS was in Year 7 when we arrived) there is a lot of ferrying about with kids here in Dubai with activities etc. Most jobs for 'westerners' are 5 days a week, but it will depend on what type of job you are looking for - what area are you looking into being employed? Plus there are lots of expat mums looking for jobs so you can apply for loads before even getting a response. Hours can be long compared to the UK where I am from - I am in admin and work 7.30-.4.30 Sunday to Thursday, often working over that, and I work through the school holidays - but only until about 2.30 ish during the hols (even though I work at a school) and we are given 45 annual leave days. So you have to have good childcare to cope with that. I am quite lucky as DS is older and can be left at home on his own during holidays, training days etc. Plus DH is able to pick him up from school so that works for us. Salary is less than I got in the UK by a significant amount yet I feel I work much harder for it. Part time jobs are like hens teeth, and also not very well paid on the whole. I went back to work because I needed to keep the old brain working, but some days I wish I was a SAHM! Hope this helps! edited by cymraes on 10/02/2015

My 92 year old grandmother in law wants to visit, we could convert the study downstairs to a temp bedroom but gaining access to the shower and toilet with a wheelchair will be almost impossible due to the lay out. She has one leg so moving around on crutches in the shower will be difficult. I am unable to have leave when she visits and I really don't think I can manage bathing her or dealing with bathroom visits (sorry but that's the way I'm made) Anybody know of support that we could arrange? She has said that they happy to go into a hotel but she's used to really good disabled facilities in the UK hotels which I don't know if these are available in Dubai. Also getting her in an out of a 4x4 will be difficult - it's sad as she desperately wants to come. Anyone who can offer guidance your help would be appreciated.

We're a family of 3, DH, me, DS (nearly 17 and very messy) and hairy Poochie, and a largish villa, we do send the ironing out and have cleaners for 3-4 hours a week to do the floors, bathrooms, stairs and give the kitchen a blitz every week. DH and I work full time, but manage to cook from scratch most evenings (we have take out once a week the night I have a late meeting) and make packed lunches, and do the laundry. We've done this for the past 3 years I've been working, the previous 3 years I was a SAHM and did it all, you just need to be organised (or not care if the house gets a bit messy!). I don't think we'd like a full time maid, we like our own company and privacy during our home life, and guess one day we'll return to the real world

Make sure your package covers your rent, schooling, medical for all of you and annual flights if possible. Prices for everything are on the rise. I don't live in springs but utilities in a villa would be in the region of 800-1200 AED per month I guess (we pay 1500-2500 a month 4 bed, maids room - no maid, and study with pool and garden)but are dependent on usage, plus there's a housing (tax really) on that cost. In my opinion food is expensive unless you have the time to be a canny shopper who can shop around. IMHO only thing that is cheap is petrol! Good luck with your move

where do you buy large packs of baking soda? I've been looking to do this for a while but have only ever seen the small fancy tins of baking soda in the baking stuff aisle, which I don't think would go very far. I buy the Arm and Hammer boxes, they are 450g. They are the ones for putting in your fridge to deodorise it so they can sometimes be in the cleaning, rather than baking aisle at the supermarket. They are pure baking soda but not recommended for baking as slightly more grainy. Ooh Daza Where do you get those, have never seen them. Thanks x

Thank you all very much! Is it usual that the whole family gets free tickets? cymraes - thank you for reminding about dental! He (DH - does it mean Darling Husband?) would work in the city center most probably. Accomodation costs are crazy there, but I am affraid that due to tremendous traffic he will spend two or three hours commuting if we live anywhere else. And on the top of that - people there work 10 hours a day, right? How do you all manage a family life with children there? I mean what a daily routine look like? Do you have any time left for your family? edited by Marko on 20/01/2015 DH's co give us all medical, flights and a reasonable accom allowance although rentals are still remaining high. Companies are cutting benefits it seems. 10 hour working days are the norm, but it depends what industry you are in. Long days mean that it is often difficult for wives to work as childcare is often a problem .... I am lucky DH starts very early so finishes at a reasonable time to collect DS (teen) from sch most days, I work 7.30-4.30 edited by cymraes on 21/01/2015
