Well we started to look in January, told too early for March move in, but glad we were seeing agents then. There are plenty of properties yes, but if they don't have the keys and the NOC then you can wait at least 14 days to have this processed through Mazaya (the developer), try to find a property that has been FULLY handed over, not just paid for but they have the keys (these are like rocking horse do'dah!) we had 3 houses lined up all 'paid' for but no keys handed over and all fell through with a week to move day ..... that's the top tip. We were literally on the drive of the villa with the removals van before the deal was finalised - far more traumatic than moving from the UK! Your question about areas, well some are more lived in and landscaped than others - we wanted an Aurelia A1 or A2, depends where you want to be. We are in RN sector very undeveloped and not many neighbours, but we have quick access to the 66 highway which is great for my sch run and DH's work, you may prefer to be nearer the main gate if you need quick access to the 311 - Helena from Landmark is very au fait with the project, I believe she lives here. Then it's a matter of if you want one over looked, not near the Du/etisalat communication towers, one on an outside of the cul-de-sac or in the middle row? .... it's all particular pref on the A1 & A2s. I can't comment if you're looking at the bigger properties. Hope this all helps - we're glad we moved from Ranches, the space in the house is excellent, we have a few teething problems with the property, but that's 'cos it's new - but I don't regret moving one bit.

Helena from Landmark is good - in the end we used Waters Edge but that was only because there was a paperwork race. There are lots of properties up here, but beware they all seem to have last minute paperwork hand over problems, 3 villas fell through for us in 2 days due to the developer not releasing keys/NOCs due to a final payment that has taken a lot of LLs by surprise. Give yourself plenty of time, have lots of patience ... the move is worth it - we love it (although I am slightly greyer from the process!)

Annwyl Mam, yn dymunno Sul y Mamau hapus iawn i chi, Gyda cariad GA or if you are very familiar and your mother is younger, and how you would speak to a very good friend or a child (sounds stupid but there is familiar and 'respectful' Welsh) it would be: Annwyl Mam, yn dymunno Sul y Mamau hapus iawn i ti, Gyda cariad GA My Welsh is rusty but I did do my education through the medium of Welsh, but spoke English to my parents so we spoke both fluently, but we had the two languages going on at the dinner table as my grandfather who lived with us didn't speak English very well - so we'd have one conversation going on in two languages!

@dessert princess, really? If I put my back into it I think I could do a good job in 4 hours if I was getting paid, is it that they just don't do it quickly? I can blitzy current 3 bed in about 2 hours if I put my mind to it but thought I'd try an agency to do it for me - perhaps I will continue to do it myself!!

We're moving up to The Villa (inshallah, fingers crossed, rubs rabbit foot!) on Monday and I would like to have someone come in and do floors/bathrooms/kitchen/ironing say once a week - how many hours would this take? The villa is 4 beds, maids and study and 5.5 bathrooms (although only 2 and downstairs loo will be used constantly!). I would need at least an hours worth of ironing (mainly the casual stuff as DH very fussy about work shirts and I'd do DS' sch uniform) would 4 hours cover this? Also if anyone up in The Villa is using a co would appreciate contact details. Thanks in advance

we were at Ace yesterday and they had these red tag offers, there was a basic one at just 299aed! (you could have put up curtains on it if you liked). We liked one with the fly nets and I think curtains in the sale for 899aed (beige with black nets) it was lovely, we just need to check it will fit in our new garden ... it was 3m x 3m which I think is the standard size. HTH

johjoj, thanks/diolch! (blushes slightly) - how about a leopard scarf and then shoes that match your dress (of the dressis plain)? Or some nice earrings/bangle to show your stylish, chic wild side?? I have to say in my previous life in the corporate world, less is more with just a little twist to show your personality. Again, guess depends on the role ... is it a 'wild' role?? (looks at self and thinks "g*d woman I was once quite stylilsh, look what being a SAHM has done to me!")

We brought everything, DH's company paid for a container, so if it went in we brought it. Personally I would say everything is more expensive - white goods, furniture, toiletries everything except petrol! We brought our old sofas they had a little bit of life left in them, we're looking to update now but the choice is not as good as home (UK). I would stock up on bedding, clothes (especially shorts/tshirts/underwear), favourite toiletries (unopened) and bung them all in the container. We brought all our electrical goods too. Good luck with your move! Dubai is great ... but expensive!

Used to spend a lot of time in Ams with work, stayed mainly in the American Hotel (was the Crowne Plaza in my day) and also the krasnapolsky - the newer rooms in the wing are more modern. Both are convenient and you can walk most places from them or hop on the tram from one end of downtown to the other. The Pulizer is lovely (featured in Ocean's 12 film). The NH hotel is also nice, but I haven't stayed there but it's a bit cheaper than the others. have a super time, don't go during the IBC conference annually (this year 9-13 Sept) ..... the whole of Ams is booked up!

chants39 am loving your idea, and it's been safely stored in my memory bank!! CW whatever you decide it will be lovely I'm sure :-) We did a birthday tea party for a friend who was 30 and didn't want to be, we made all the sandwiches, cupcakes, jelly and ice cream, all the party games we had as kids (pass the parcel, sleeping lions, musical statues etc etc) it went down a blast! We had all the paper matching plates etc and party hats and streamers - he thought it was fab, he's still talking about it 15 years later :-)

I need to buy a fully electric hob and oven and the only ones I can find 60x90 size for a reasonable price have ceramic hobs. I have Le Creuset pans and although the salesman tells me "that's fine ma'am" thought I'd better check with the EW professionals!

thanks Choccs01 and jillp, I rang the gas people again the deposit is 520 for a new cannister with regulator and a refill is 115 but they will only give me 125 for the bottle to return it. Where we're moving to doesn't have a gas pipe into the kitchen so I need to get rid. I am selling my cooker hopefully to the new tennant of this villa and just want to calculate the price of the bottle in with the cooker. thanks so much for your swift responses.

Rashid were fantastic when DS broke his arm ... couldn't fault them, but we don't have an Emirates health card so follow up was done at the Canadian, who said Rashid were excellent and had set his arm very well

hands up guilty m'lud - use the dryer most of the time, always forgetting to bringing in the washing from the garden hence cardboard clothes. Only DH's linen shirts go outside. Everything else in the dryer - not very environmentally friendly I know but the amount of times I've re washed things after they get too dry outside. Plus towels and bedding are fab from my dryer .... but don't put fabric conditioner with the towels, a tip I learnt on EW. Our DEWA bill has been hardly any different since I cranked up using the dryer.

a friend of mine was hit last week in a carpark and got dished out the pink slip because she had fully comp - what a joke! Thankfully when we were reversed into last year, and we were not at the car but some kind person saw it but didn't have the details for the police, we got the green slip ....

we're moving shortly but only from Ranches to The Villa, I need a company to move only the big furniture, as I can shuttle the smaller stuff (clothes, kitchen stuff, etc) but I have some furniture that did cost a lot of money so i need someone reliable and careful to move that (glass dresser, sideboard, sofas etc). Any idea what kind or price is reasonable for this, we don't need a full pack up just someone careful to do it. I will call the numbers that Mitch and jules 16 quote. NadiaA - I am very interested in your boxes where are you located, I am in Ranches, but only have a Peugeout 307 this week as DH is away with the big car ..... please let me know where you are located and if you still have your boxes - thanks awfly x

no worries simpleasabc! The Saheels are lovely .... big and nice gardens too. thought I'd just mention it as I know how difficult it is when you're new to Dubai and don't know the areas etc, and it's easy to dismiss somewhere if you think it's out of your price range. Ranches is lovely and we've loved living here, we're just moving to something bigger for our budget now that we've found our feet in Dubai and I'm not daunted by driving.

260,000 in Al Reem???? That's very very expensive, you could have a Saheel or Mirador for that (the posher stand alone villas in Ranches) - I think max for Al Reem would be about 170,000 and that would have to be a 4 bed with a lovely garden and lake view ..... We paid 150,000 two years ago, 130,000 last year and although we're moving out this next month the type 3M here in Reem 3 is 115,000 this year. DH looked at Springs when he first got here, said it was not for us (looks a little tired) - came up to Ranches and knew I would love it. Pools are lovely and clean and the walk round the lake in Al Reem is fab, nice community feel. Alma's lake is now filled and hopefully should be landscaped soon. Good luck!!

Is the Marina at the Outlet Mall new? I was at the Outlet Mall briefly this week and haven't seen it ... but will deffo go again if there is one there. I saw a great sofa in Marina in Mirdif went to the warehouse in Umm Suqueim and it was the same price in the sale. DH still says we don't need it! Grrr

hi assisi, the Mazaya agent (who is in the show house) told us that IML do the first fill, so it may be worth getting in touch with him - I can't remember his name. A friend here on Ranches has used seveal pool people over the years, I could get the names and you could ring them for advice? Let me know, drop me an email :-) We were up yesterday looking at another 4 houses two in RD and two in RH (I think, got dizzy by the end!) plan to move around the 20 March. We loved one A1 great location but greedy landlord! The other two we liked were A2s but have pool at the side and a low fence which I'm not so keen on, but the extra sq footage is nice.

I can second the Chiropody Clinic on JB Road - two visitors went there who visited from the UK and highly recommended it. About 300dhs a visit. They have moved from oposite the Mercato to the new premises near the JB Hotel.

Not normally bothered by Valentines, we usually get a card for each other. DH completely forgot the date and apologised last night that he'd forgotten ... ok no worries. I'd made home made cards for him and DS and bought a lovely heart biscuit thing from Costas for each of them ........ but now I feel really miffed. DH grumpty 'cos he's working tonight, can't blame him I guess. Perhaps my over 40 hormones are kicking in?? Why do I feel so miffed? Ah well off to cook a nice dinner for them now :-( ps Dog seems to love me :-)

DH working nights, so 'romantic' dinner for me and DS ..... next free eve mother in law will be here and want taking out! Last year DS (aged 11) cooked us dinner, steak and chips and then took himself and his dinner off to the study so we could be 'alone'! Bless

We've used Outshine for nearly a year once a month, 100 dhs for our 3 bed in Al Reem, Ranches - 050 403 9184, the guys that do the job are really good and careful. ETA their strap line is 'your pane, is our pleasure'!!! <em>edited by cymraes on 13/02/2011</em>
