apparently, according to DH, they were doing donuts here in Ranches last night ..... he wondered what the heck was going on ... could have been connected?? He was seething but they were moving so fast he could get the number plate! Was just after midnight, I was away with the fairies by then!

we are also about to renew our PO box in Ranches, try having a look at their website - www.emiratespost.ae I think they list all the locations there. However, when I was looking last year some of the info was out of date. We did our first application up at the Emaar compound behind Hattan/AlMahra communities.

arohadxb, well apart from a designer bag (which I bought in the UK with my own money several years ago!) I guess I'm pretty much the same in Dubai as I was in the UK. I'd like to think if my friends or colleagues were flies on the walls they would see the same 'cymraes' as I was in the UK. I don't have fake nails, tan, hair or body (sadly!) it's not me, sadly the ID slummy mummy has been taken by someone else! What I do like is having an easier life - not having to work, being able to spend time with my family here and have a few more treats that we did in the UK. I believe some people would have a long way to fall if they went back to their home country (no maid, no fancy car, no weekly nail appts, designer this and that etc etc) .... DH and I are not Dubai Fat Cats ... DH has a well paid job, after doing the same job for years in the UK for a lot less money, we are not rolling in it, far from it - but we do have a bit more than we had in the UK - and we're happy with that. Don't think I've answered your question ..... need wine (which I used to drink in the UK also on a school night!)

Kimball and MCC - I emailed the following contact, and the problem has got better, ok they still bark but only for a short time now each time ... I think the poor maid has to chase them in! Plus now I can hear their kids screaming and shouting - guess it runs in the family!! I would just keep emailing Emaar and let them deal with it. Yes the community pools on Ranches are cooled in the summer, they are lovely, but do understandaby get busy at the weekends, they are quite big too. I am pleased to say that ours is very well kept in Al Reem 3. Good luck in your hunt.

Izzy99, I agree with you .... I got my first designer handbag at 41 (after years of yearning) and you know it looks better with age, if I never get another I will be happy (although DH bought me another one as a welcome to Dubai prezzie). The two I have are fab and I wouldn't get a 'replica/fake' they just don't look right. OK some of them are lovely leather handbags but they're not what they say on the tin and in reality who are you trying to kid - you or someone else? A person who knows designer handbags will know - I swear I can spot a real Mulberry at 50 paces - they're my weakness, sad I know. Dare I ask if your MIL is living with you as this is cultural? If so it's my understanding in these types of situations that your DH may feel totally responsible for her, and he is 'doing his duty'? Albeit not what you want. I don't mean to cause offence if this is not the case, or indeed it is - but it may give us more insight into your situation. I wish I could solve your problem - huggs

BMAP, as Claire says get the applications in, what they are asking for in documentation is pretty standard, we are at a Brit Curr school so the domentation appears to be standard across the board, probably a KHDA requirement. Give the school copies of what you have and send a covering letter saying you are progressing the ones you don't have. I bet you won't be the first (or the last) who doesn't have all the documentation to hand. Good luck and don't panic!

To comment on the food, I have a Retriever/Collie cross - his food (Royal Canin) is 185dhs a bag and it lasts about 5 weeks - the Dogs Trust told us if you feed them poor quality food it is generally full of additives and fillers - that's why it's cheap. On top of that he has a dentistix each day for his teeth (visitors bring in from UK as they are hard to get here!) but they work out about 40dhs a week based on UK costs. I buy flea treatment (Advocate) which we dose once a month from the UK which costs about £80 a year. I think the last time we had boosters they were 300dhs plus the municipality tag which I think was 90dhs? As a previous poster has mentioned - give K9 a call I am sure they will give you the whole picture as they really want to rehome their dogs. Also I would have a contingency for emergency vet bills as they are massive and there is no pet insurance here, it's not uncommon for a relatively minor visit to the vets to cost you well in advance of 1,000dhs if you're lucky. Our dog is part of the family we would not be without him, but do consider the costs and the tie of having them, kennel costs can mount up too if you plan to be away on holidays. ps lucky you and your DH's co repatriating pets ... we have our savings fund for ours x

reminds me of taking DS for his developmental check, I think it was 18 months, they put these really tiny sweetie things down on the table for him to pick up (guess they were checking for hand eye co-ord) anyway apparently they're supposed to try to pick them up individually using pinsor grip - they were the size of a pinhead.... DS looks at them, licks his finger, sticks them to his finger eats them and says "more" .... nurse says "well no problem there"!!! Bless him, hope you get a place!

@alinejlt yes the vinegar was 1.95 I ran it at 60 degs to give it a good wash @cakes yes just sloshes it in the powder drawer @teabag - thanks again! Ps DH thinks I am potty!

Parasol on Umm Suqueim road do them, we had one on display at the DESC festive fayre which was actually a prize, it was really lovely. I think they have all kinds of styles and they will build to order. If you go on the bypass road (611) you will be fine .... however I wouldn't go without being on DH's licence (although it only covers Dubai Emirate) ... perhaps take a friend too for reinforcement. We have never encountered the Baracuda Bandits in two years of regular visits (DH and I normally go on his day off), but I would take a camera and if they say they're calling the police be prepared to call their bluff and take their picture, that's what I would do. we've had this several times in Al Reem 3 - check your pump is switched on sometimes it trips. If it's all ok ring Dewa emergency number, they can tell you if there is a prob in your area or the like - they will also come out and check it out, they have done this twice with me and then miraculously the water has come back. They will also do a pressure test for you, then if there is a problem you will need to call some maintenence out. We have on lots of occasions had lack of water only for it to come back within an hour or so. Good luck!

@Goose, I guess if you sponsor them ...... someone must have done it, or tried in the past. @SabineF - when DS was under school age in the UK I paid the equivalent of 2,600dhs a month for a full time nursery place, and I know friends who paid in the same region for a qualified nanny/child minder. That was way back in [b'>2002[/b'>! As I said previously if you want someone qualified you will have to pay for it. I would not have left my child with an unqualified person in either the UK or in Dubai. (ETA so with inflation what Trees says would figure) I just want to share my motherly experiences with you - I had to make a decision to either go back to work and pay the going rate for qualified childcare or give up my job and stay at home with my child. At the end of the day you have to make the decision on who will look after your child while you are not there (if you're going back to work that is) and if they are [b'>qualified[/b'> or not. SabineF .... to give you an insight into Norland - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norland_College Just adding my 5dhs ... a nanny is very different from a maid who has worked with children. Think about what you would expect from a nanny in your home country and I would say be prepared to pay the same for a 'qualified' nanny. Jane30 - I agree with the ladies who've suggested going to have a look. We moved from West London to Dubai (originally I am from a very small seaside town in Wales), originally we thought we'd be based in AD but it turned out to be Dubai. I thought I could live in AD so Dubai I think is easier. It really depends on your situation ... personally my priority would be my DS who is in year 8, I would need to know that his educational needs would be met, apart from that I think I would be relatively happy to live in most places in the world. We are a family and we want to be together. I visited the Falklands a few years ago when DH was working there, it is the most remote place I have ever been to, having said that I did say that if we were offered to go an live there for a short while (3 years or so) I would be happy to go, never look back I say. My only personal criteria ever when I have lived overseas is that I have enough money in my account to fly home to visit my parents at a moments notice. Good luck with your decision, and perhaps see if there is a forum like EW in that country - I am sure you would not be the only one who has had to make this decision :-) - I am not sure if you want to share the destination with us here, but you could be surprised if you do share, that someone might have a lot of advice they could share. ETA oopsie was crafting my msg when you said about Russia ... I have read of certain ladies living there ... I am sure they can offer advice. <em>edited by cymraes on 13/01/2011</em>

if the 20 cu m container is the smaller of the two types I've seen then that's what we had. We came from a med/smallish 3 bed out to Dubai from the UK, with 2 sofas, lg 6 seat dining table and chairs, sideboard, dresser, tv corner unit, one bed (sold the other doubles before coming out), desk and all the stuff (clothes, books, computers and kitchen stuff) you have stuffed in a 3 bed house, but no wardrobes or bedroom furniture. It all went in and there was a small amount of space left. Our packers in the UK were superb so I guess they just packed it well. We didn't have any garage/shed items. Only had a tumble dryer as we bought new white goods when we got here. However our plan is not to take the sofas back, when we go but all the dining room furniture and beds etc will come back with us.

Eli1979 - went today to look at a Mazaya A1 Arellia (sp?) we really liked it, as we are only renting it's not a long term committment ... and personally (so don't shoot me) I haven's seen any quality builds in Dubai ... well not in my price range. Anyway we liked it it has lots of room and is cheaper than what we are paying in Ranches, plus it's detatched and no road noise which we have at the moment. I read on The Villa forum http://thevilladubai.webs.com/ that there have been problems with the pools, speaking to the Mazaya contact today he said any problems with the house would be rectified by Mazaya in the first year under the warranty and also the pool with IML (?) I said I knew about the pool issues and he nodded ... so they are aware. Anyway we are very keen and we lodged our interest with the agent as we're not due to move until the end of March. I love the Ranches but The Villa offers us more for our money, lots of people are moving in - yes it needs landscaping but I would move in a heart beat. Hope this helps - btw wikkid was a great help on this topic

thanks for your swift response assisi. I kind of know it's early, but I'm one of those unsettled people that likes to know that I'll have somewhere to live. We're going to hopefully have a good look around this week at a few. Please do share your experiences with me, and which agent did you use or are you going with a landlord directly? Were you able to negotiate much on the price vs no of cheques? DH's company pay in one cheque so we hope to have a bit of a lever or a lever with the garden etc. Re your quandry - I guess the pool has benefits of being in the sun and being in the shade, so many people actually install those sail things over the pool as the sun is so hot most of the year, esp if children are using the pool. Plus if it's in the shade it might be a few degrees cooler in the hotter months. Keep us posted on your move, and hope to see you up there in April!

We have decided that we'd like to move up to The Villa, I have just posted on their forum to see if anyone knows of a Mazaya A1s going in the 100-125,000 price range - if you know of any please let me know. Our move date is the first 10 days of April and we would be able to pay in one cheque. However the pool would have to be ready to go and have some sort of garden (paving is our preference) as we have visitors at Easter! I have contacted Thomas at the Property Store and he is getting back to me, but if anyone knows of a direct to landlord set up that would appeal to us too. Thanks in advance

pop the unskinned onions in a bowl, pour over a kettle of boiling water - let them soak for a few mins then top and tail and the skins will come off quite quickly - beware though the onions will be hot so use some kitchen paper or a tea towel while peeling. Sounds yummy!

DESC uniform you have to buy at Magrudys ... again quality is poor and they charge top price. Last year the boys trousers were terrible, all shiny after a few washes and I tried to put them on a gentle wash and a cooler iron. This year I bought trousers in M&S in the UK over the summer, they were half the price, you can wash and tumble and they look so smart, hardly have to touch with the iron. Also the supplier was changed for this year but I've found the quality of the shirts worse than last year! This thread has now prompted me to have a word with school ..... the more that complain perhaps we can get something done?
