Hi Molly MooMoo, sorry to hear you're unwell. I've had acupuncture here and at home for PMS and digestion problems. I've only ever had a few sessions and honestly cant say whether it helped or not. I actually find reflexology very helpful. My sisters though and my Mum have had it and all swear by it. They committed to it and really feel it was beneficial. For my Mum it was for arthritis and for my sisters it was for fertility. Acupuncture is actually prescribed by medical doctors at home now and covered by some insurance providers as its considered legitimate and steeped in solid research. There is a lady here called Dr. Ou (search this site) who was recommended to me and at the time (2 years ago) she used to come to your house. Best of luck to you, I think complimentary/alternative therapies can be extremely helpful :)

Grapefruit Seed Extract (Citricidal) is a natural and very effective treatment for Candida in the gut. Its available in tablet form. I order it on line but I have seen it here.

If you find a school happy to take your child and they pass the school assessment, then its just a matter of paperwork. This was my experience.

Yes it is normal unfortunately. Other little ones crying set others off too. I think they become alarmed when they see another child crying and think there is something to be worried about or feared. Usually within a couple of days it all calms down! Its upsetting though :(

Hi RuthM, try www.medical-specialists.co.uk/. This summer I was able to get a prescription med for IBS from them. They posted it to my house within a few days. I hope you manage to get hold of Domperidone, it was a great help to me when I had my first child. Best of luck and well done on being so determined!

January 04 I'm quite sure that if a child is enrolled in the school they can't just ask him to leave like that because of a learning difficulty. Please contact the KHDA for advise.

So if she, the little girl, doesn't see her Mum, shes ok and doesn't get upset at all? Well if that's the case Id continue with sneaking out so!

Hi Mama5, sorry you're experiencing this as its a very upsetting way to start your day :( How old is your child? Does he or she stop crying soon after you leave or continue being upset for quite a while? I remember reading in the past that you should always say good bye and not sneak out. The theory is that if you kiss and cuddle them goodbye and leave swiftly then when you return they learn to realise that yes, you do leave but you always come back.

I haven't read all of this thread so this may have been mentioned already but, in the US as of today, the ALS assoc has raised over 70 million dollars in the past month due to this challenge compared to 2.5m last year! That's incredible and it's a bit of fun :)

In my experience, (I'm an early years teacher) you do need a teaching qualification and experience. I imagine Nursery schools will take on staff that are unqualified though. I don't know if it still applies but at one stage you didn't need a qualification to work in FS1 here.

Yes, we moved home after almost 10 years here, lived at home for 6 and came back to Dubai 4 years ago. I found it hard to settle at home even though I was the one who pushed for the move. Financially it was better for us to come back here but I hate that my children are not being educated at home where the education is superior to what they're receiving here. We do love the weather (not this hot though!), the low crime rate, cleanliness of the city and the fact that I can have full time help in the house all contribute to us being happy here. In my ideal dream world though, Id win the lotto, move home but regularly holiday in Dubai and elsewhere.....dream on :)

I agree with plain jane. Yes the facilities are amazing but due to the number of children and disorganisation the children rarely get to use them. I moved my children out of this school this year and am pleased I did as they were starting to fall behind. During assessments in other British schools my fears were confirmed. They were definitely not up to scratch, even though they were both in top sets at Gems. You need to ask yourself why the teachers at WSO don't often put their own children in the school....and why they have so many newly qualified young staff who have never actually taught anywhere else before who never stay more than the required 2 years contract. I know teachers from this school that forfeit their free child places and put them in non Gems schools, if the school is so amazing why would they do this? You're spot on Wondermum....teaching parents not taking up a place for their own children and a high turn over of staff is the single biggest indication that a school in not up to scratch. NQTs are cheap to hire and a school that doesn't value its children enough to pay for experienced staff is best avoided.

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone is taking progesterone tablets? After tests with my Doctor, it seems I have low progesterone and she advised taking the tabs for 14 days per month. Apart from making me sleep like a log and feeling tired during the day I cant say I'm impressed with them! Does it take a few months to feel the benefits? TIA

Actually , as a supply teacher you only do the contact hours , so you finish when the children do. Rates vary a lot. I understand the likes of DESS and JESS pay approx 700/dhs per day but the usual rate in other schools is around 500/dhs . Drop your CV into schools in your area, schools here are always looking for supply staff. I can't imagine any school will sponsor you just to do supply. You'd need to work full time for that. Good luck. edited by darlingboys on 08/05/2014

Hi Clairepe, there is a Waldorf Initiative (school) in Al Barsha and also a new school in the old Safa school building in Jumeira that are small and inclusive. I'm sorry I don't have contact details but I'm sure if you do a search something will come up.K12 is American Curriculum. edited by darlingboys on 23/04/2014

My husband is in construction and he has assured me that there is no way that a building/grounds that size will be ready in approx 6 months! So far there is hoarding up only! My children are very happy in Safa and while the new location would be way more convenient for us, Im not moving them until there is an actual building in place! I'm a little concerned that the current school will become huge all of a sudden when the pupils who should be starting at the new location have to go there instead!

My sisters now 6 year old son had this issue and she got a specific very soft helmet that he had to wear when sleeping. It solved the problem. I cannot remember the name of the helmet but if you google it something may come up. I will talk to her about it also and will come back with more info.

Derien slow messy handwriting can also be a symptom of Dyslexia. Cursive writing is easier than script and should now be used right from FS. Repeated practise of cursive like suggested below enables it to become fixed in the child's kinaesthetic memory. While handwriting may not be considered to be very important in some curriculums ,BC being one of them, the fact is for now the majority of our children's work is written and all their exams/tests are handwritten and do have to be completed within a specified period of time so legible ,quick writing is important . My son was recently diagnosed with Dyslexia and along with atrocious spelling, slow writing is one of his symptoms.

Hello, we took our daughters out of their school because of massive bullying issues and have been looking for a school. Since the schools we applied to have still not come back to us I may have to look at home schooling until then. I already started them on Time4learning. They were recommended on the UAE home schooling site. May I ask which home schooling system did you opt for? Does one have to notify KHDA/MOE about this? I would really appreciate your feedback as I am completely at a loss. I followed the British and Irish Curriculum with my 2. We didn't have to inform the KHDA that we were taking the children out of school but now that we're (hopefully) going back in Jan I've had to write a letter to them explaining why we took them out etc. This info was on the DUNEHA website. Regarding K12, while many people are obviously very happy with it, for us the fact that its an American system and demanded so may hours work a day meant it wouldn't work . Homeschooling in Dubai is not illegal but it's not regulated either. That makes it a bit of a grey area I suppose. Will update further when we hopefully get the all clear from the KHDA. Sorry your children had bullying to deal with....horrific for you all Im sure :( edited by darlingboys on 16/12/2013 edited by darlingboys on 16/12/2013

Hi White Orchid, thanks for your reply. The Irish Curriculum is different to BC in quite a few ways but the main thing is the Curriculum is more child centered . Children start school older and the pace is slower and more thorough in the early years giving the children a strong foundation. Its not as exam/test led as the BC either. Interesting! I didn't know that. I guess it's come a long way since the old national school approach then (lol). Good to hear :-) I know it seems as though there are more of us here... maybe down to our loud gobby behaviour! [b'>LOL! Yes, that's probably true![/b'>

Its odd that there is no Irish school, no doubt there is some red tape reason for this! I'm going to investigate further :) I am home educating my two, mostly through the Irish Curriculum but I need to try and keep them up to speed with the British Curriculum too in case they do go back to school here as there is no other choice :/

Just wondering, has there ever been an Irish Curriculum school in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?? There are so many Irish people living in the UAE and yet it seems odd to me, an Irish Mum, that there is no school to cater for all the Irish children here......ie keep them in the Curriculum that they may well return to in the future. Any feedback appreciated. :) edited by darlingboys on 05/10/2013
