Kippling, many years ago when I first moved to London I did a live in pub job for a few months. It was made quite clear within the terms of my employment that my employer was allowed access to my room if wanted. It was their property, their fixtures and stock and their risk to have employees with free access to it all. One way of protecting themselves against theft was to have spot checks of rooms. I had no intention of stealing anything and had no problem with their stance. Nothing went missing in the time I was there and no checks were done but it wouldn't have bothered me at all if my room had been checked - I never had anything to hide. I would have no hesitation to check my maid's room if things were going missing.

Thanks all. Will try out what you have all suggested. Just worried about overdoing it at the gym as I said I had a c section 5 months ago. Really do appreciate your advice. :-) Hi Nemesia With a c-section 5 months ago the deeper layers of your abdominal muscles will still be healing so I would be very careful about doing any strenuous core/ab routines without guidance from someone with experience working with women after c-sections. There is still plenty else you can do, cardio etc but just be careful with that particular area. If you do the wrong thing you could do more harm than good. There is also plenty you can do for that area, just make sure you get proper advice first. Good advice from wickedangel about diet.

Good luck Sue, the lack of facilities for the men working within the community is a real problem. It's not just the construction workers, it's also the gardeners. They aren't allowed to use the facilities at the pools and parks either so what other option do they have but to use the grounds? They aren't always within reach of the community center and unless they avoid drinking all day in the heat they are going to need to go at some point. I can't imagine they particularly enjoy having to urinate in public either :( There are a lot of workers within our community and it beggars belief there aren't adequate facilities for them.

If you are looking for a magic cure that involves no effort there isn't one. You've housed a human, it's a heavy load on your tummy and if you want to get it back in to shape you need to make a bit of an effort. As the other ladies have said, planks are brilliant. Work them in to your day and no matter how busy you are, they will barely take up any time. Do a few when you get up, before each time you eat, or have a cup a tea, or go to the bathroom, just whatever works for you. I do them, holding for 30 seconds - 1 minute each time depending on the time of day. Do however many reps you can manage. Really squeeze your pelvic floor up when you do them, it's killing two birds with one stone. If you are totally unfamiliar with exercising it might be worth seeing a Personal Trainer for a few sessions (or even just one) to work at a quick routine you can do at home and to make sure you are doing it properly. If you find it hard, that's the point. You don't get anywhere with exercising without pushing yourself a bit.

The nutribullet makes smoothies not juices. It's probably a matter of opinion but I think it's so much better to blitz the whole fruit or vegetable rather than just extract the juice. You get all the fibre when blitz and it fills you up for much longer. I used to juice, as FairyDust says, it's a lot of waste and it doesn't fill you up for long. I blitz now, one beetroot, one cucumber, one lemon and one tsp of oil gives me plenty of energy and keeps me full for hours.

I agree with Appletiser. The Nutribullet has been recommended on here a few times. You could get a juicing box delivered from Greenheart. Freshly made organic juice exactly when you want it and a LOT cheaper than some of the juicing programs I've seen here. http://www.greenheartuae.com/?page_id=584

Our counselor at school says "if I am late to work because of traffic, parking and traffic violence, etc, it is only myself I should blame - I should have left home earlier, which was under my control, the rest is not under my control, so why should I feel mad about it, I can only be mad at myself for not moving my a$$ earlier" :) I'm guessing this counselor has never been stuck in a three hour traffic jam?

This probably sounds silly but if you don't get any suggestions on here maybe knock on the door of someone in your neighbourhood with a nice garden and ask them if they would mind giving you the number of whomever does their garden? Or would that make you seem like a creepy garden peeping tom? Not sure, I'd probably do it :)

Buy some rolls of grass from Warsan and do it yourself? You'd need to clear whatever is on the ground now, roll if needed, fertilise then lay the grass. They have the fertiliser at Warsan too. I'm pretty sure there would be a youtube tutorial on what to do, there seems to be one for everything. edited by Daza on 28/10/2014

It's been mentioned on here a few times people being asked to take window socks off :( Baby shop has shades which stick to the inside of the window with little suction caps and can easily removed. In AD last weekend I saw a car with a towel tucked in to his driver side window as shade. He would have had zero visibility to his left, what a muppet.

Hi desertrose I'm sorry for what you are going through :( It was for a totally different reason but I was on bed or house rest for a lot of my last pregnancy so I have an idea of what you are going through and it is very difficult. You just have to keep telling yourself that it won't last forever and you will get through it. Because it won't and you can :) I also had small children at the time and they coped with it better than me, children are amazing. I read to them a lot which was nice. I also did a lot of reading myself, the Game of Thrones series kept me sane for a while. My post count on EW got a fairly significant boost ;) Make sure you invite your friends over often, being stuck in the house is really isolating. I found it messed with my head a bit, far too much time to just sit and think! You'll get there. Focus on all the things that you do have rather than the things you temporarily can't do. You will do them again. I cried with relief the first time I got to pick my two year old up after it all. Good luck :)

A new poster gave a full name of someone in relation to a username. Who knows if it was their actual name or if the new poster was just stirring. I hope it was the latter. Some people are just miserable, I hope the swampyface twitter outing put off at least a few trolls. Monica Lewinsky recently made a speech about being the target of online abuse. It's long but well worth watching.

The UAE is the only country in the middle east that requires this ... other places like Jordan you can just stick them in the corridor or kitchen. Doesn't stop it happening. I once viewed a house where the maids room had been extended and turned in a guest room and the maid was in the laundry cupboard on a sleeping platform built above the washing machine and dryer :( and i bet they said they treated her like family... I got the distinct impression that she should think herself lucky as they had extra ventilation put in for her comfort.

Daza, this is what I thought but my maids friend was brought recently from Filipines through an agency. Dont know how they do it but i know its expensive and all legal. After she came to dubai her visa was and sponsorship was done without any problems. Interesting. I read an article recently about the impact the ban was having on agencies with the loss of business. Maybe it's like most things, if you pay enough you can get around it!

Hi ladies - i accidentally messed up my first post lol so had to delete. So I've found a lady over in the philipines i desperately want to bring over. The issue is ban from the philipines. is there any way i can get her to leave the country? anyone tried it? I know, the ban makes it all very difficult. I think you have to use agency to bring her, they charge quite a lot of money though, i heard of 10000 aed people paying just to bring a filipina here. On top of that you have to add all sponshorship cost. I could be wrong but I don't think the agencies are allowed to recruit from the Philippines at the moment.

Sorry Cleopatra, I'm with the other posters. Maybe they could have said it a bit more nicely but they are probably completely fed up with children missing lessons with no notice given then their parents expecting them to be accommodated at another time. Even if it was an honest mistake it still doesn't mean the teacher should take any more of their time contacting you if a space comes up. It's not just here either, I know in my home country if you don't turn up to a swimming lesson with no notice you lose it, no make ups. I guess it's one of the incentives to try to ensure children turn up when they are meant to.

My parents weren't particularly strict but there is still [i'>no[/i'> [i'>way[/i'> I would have been allowed to go to an unsupervised party when I was 15. I was allowed to go to parties but only ones with parents present. Rosie, if your daughter doesn't have many friends and this is her first party of this type don't let her throw herself in the deep end by going to an unsupervised party. Let her learn to navigate such social situations a bit more slowly. Unsupervised teen parties have a tendency to get waaaaaaaaay out of hand quickly and anything could happen. As a compromise could you allow her to invite this boy and maybe a few other teens to your home for an evening? Provide nice food and a bit of privacy but still be there to keep an eye on things? If the boy in question is only interested in spending time with your daughter completely unsupervised then he is probably someone she should avoid. ETA: At least she has been honest about no parents being there. As a teen I wasn't always entirely truthful about exactly who was going to be at parties. edited by Daza on 21/10/2014

Your daughter has told you that someone meant to be caring for her is treating this way and rather than acting immediately you ask advice on a forum about what to do? Really? You know the character of your daughter, do you believe her? Has she made things up previously? Is it worth taking the risk? If my daughter told me this was happening I wouldn't bother with cameras, something else to happen or any sort of proof, I would have my maid on the next flight home.

well,I kind of tried that but honestly, now I just cannot judge how much to cook or end up having to shop everyday as she either doesn't eat it and [b'>then finishes all the mangoes[/b'> (which seems to be the only fruit my toddler eats so I have to go and buy more Does she prepare the mango for herself or do you cut it for her? Honestly, what a headache. How she eats obviously does not work with how your family eats. She's an adult, she can sort her own food out. Our maid doesn't get a food allowance, she gets an all in decent salary and it's up to her how she wants to spend it. She has a small fridge, a microwave, jug and rice cooker in her room. She is welcome to cook in my kitchen although she very rarely does. She does her grocery shopping in her time off.

In my children's classes there is often a couple of parents who don't put in for the class gifts. It's not a big deal, I can't remember it ever being commented on to be honest. I doubt most people would even notice. We've never had a kitty though, it's always been paying for each thing as it comes up. In your situation I would just ask the class mums what would be easiest, giving them one lump sum for school related activities or giving them the money as they come up.

I became a class parent when when no-one volunteered to do it so the teacher asked me and another mum if we would share the role. Despite not wanting to do it (I was exhausted with a new baby) I agreed as the teacher was desperate. It was awful. Constantly chasing up people for money for presents etc who just can't remember week after week after week to to bring the 100 dirhams they happily agreed to pay. Being asked by other mums to complain about the progress of their child. Organising nights out because everyone is REALLY keen to only have a handful turn up on the night. And I had it easy, on the whole the class parents were lovely. Someone of the rude demanding emails people send to class parents are unbelievable. You'd think they were in a high paid role with people to answer to, not volunteering or as is often the case, doing it reluctantly because no one else will. So, Scaralex I have much more interest in my children's education that dropping them off and picking them up but in my children's school the class parent role has nothing to do with your child's education and everything to do with dealing with other parents who can so often be rude and difficult. It's not a 'little extra' it's often hours of effort a week and being criticised if you don't keep everyone happy - and some people are just never happy. Without fail the worst offenders I've seen for being demanding and awful to the class parent are those who never have, and have no intention of ever volunteering for the role. edited by Daza on 17/10/2014

I'm talking about bathrooms where there is no toilet paper or a towel or a tissue box in sight! I know that men use their wizars to dry, but what about women? What is a wizar?? It's what many men in the region wear under their kandooras. It is a long white cloth that wraps around their waist, ideal for drying... Thank you for explaining Anon. I was thinking a wizar is what is sometimes referred to in my country by children as a 'whizzer' (which is you know.....) and my mind was boggling. I was imagining it being used as a sort of fan.....

I read an interesting commentary between scientists : the thing about land going under is apparently not quite what we think : take a glass of water with ice cubes. measure the level on the side of the glass. After the ice cubes have melted, look again. same level. Unless of course, they mean that there is lots of ice on land that will melt - that would be a different story. Ice bergs however..... What do you think ? About 90% of ice in the world covers Antarctica - a land mass. This article explains it well: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/geophysics/question473.htm

I think the point is that anyone in society has a place when it comes to work. In the workplace, do you expect to be an equal to your CEO? There is equality when it comes to human rights and basic needs, but everyone needs to be respectful of their place in a work sense. And in that sense we are not all equal. Some have it tougher than others, some have physical work, some have work that requires intellect, etc. Many who are in senior positions are there because of experience, education, etc. Society is made up of chiefs and indians. Yes, I am using that saying as I don't ever take the pc route......it is just that. A saying. Of course there is a hierarchy within most work places but unless I have totally misunderstood things (always a possibility!) I think what is being discussed here is a hierarchy with human beings. I respect my boss as more senior than me within the workplace, I don't think this means I am not her equal as a person.

Marykar and mrsb, due to the way I was raised and the culture I am from I believe that all people are equal, no matter what the circumstances of their birth or the job they do. I just can't comprehend the viewpoint that all people are not equals. Our differences in this are cultural and I'm just trying to understand where you are coming from a little better. Do you believe that people are not all born equal or is it dependent on other things? Can someone change their standing? Are there people that you consider yourself beneath? The concept is just so foreign to me that I'd like to hear your side.
