It was the tone, the bizarre title of the thread - I think "chelsea tractor" used in reference to a 4x4 was last used in the 1980's - everyone here has 4x4's they are normal here. Why even call it a Chelsea Tractor? Also really the driving here is terrible but do you really think the lady in the car is reading this and going to change her ways? This happens to people all the time, every day here. I found the title odd too, especially given a small percentage of people would even know what a Chelsea Tractor is. I had a 4x4 in London and I think the only person who ever referred to it as a Chelsea Tractor was one of my husbands friends who was aghast. She was convinced that it was a sign he was losing touch with his roots and that he was on the path to calling one of his children Tarquin :D

Something always bugs me regarding the drivers here. If you check social media, Facebook, EW, 99% of the posters strongly criticize dangerous driving, as in swerving, using cellphones, changing lanes without indicators, pushing into a queue, but anything from 20-40% of the road users at any one time drive recklessly and stupidly. And such driving is across all social classes and all types of cars, is it that people "pretend" to be good drivers on the net, or is it that bad drivers do not tend to post on the web ? I walk around Arabian Ranches a lot and would say that over half of drivers are on the phone. Mums on the school run are the worst offenders :(

It's just a [b'>phase[/b'> and will pass as quickly as it has arrived. Make a big fuss of him when he does sit nicely and don't stress out when he doesn't. He's only 11 months, you've still got plenty of time to show him that meal times are family time :) Or maybe not given kiwispiers post ;) I still wouldn't worry about it. My baby went through a short phase of only wanting to eat on someone's lap at around that age.

I'll speak to her today and see if we can come to a [b'>compromise[/b'>. It looks to me like a good compromise is exactly what you have suggested, 20 days off at Xmas then 10 off another time of year when it suits you better. If that's not acceptable to her then tell her you will do it by the book and she can have a month off next summer after completion of one year. Whatever happened with her previous employer is not your concern.

Does anyone have a reclining McLaren or similar single buggy in good condition that they would like to swap for a side by side double Mothercare brand buggy? It is black/rainbow stripe with rain cover and cosy toes. It's in perfect condition and I only used it for 7 weeks for a holiday a few years ago. It's been in its box ever since. I'm travelling this summer and I don't think my trusty Bugaboo will survive another international flight. Trying to avoid buying yet another buggy when the finish line is in sight for no longer needing them!

I agree with Asti. Coffee from Starbucks tastes sooo different in the US. It's even much, much better in Bangkok. I don't know what they're doing wrong here. And the food is terrible. Isn't the Dubai Garden Center meant to have the best coffee? Starbucks here switched to long life milk a couple of years back. I don't have milk but my husband says it is vile with the long life stuff. If Starbucks is your only option ask if they have fresh milk, they sometimes do.

Mbnight, do you mean that you want to hire someone because you don't want to be in the house alone all the time because it will make you feel more secure or is it because you want companionship? If it's to make you feel secure then I think that is a perfectly valid reason for hiring someone, some people don't like being home alone and it is common here for maids not to be allowed to sleep out so you should have someone there every night. If it is for companionship then I think you'd be better off actually making friends. If you are paying someone for their company it is a totally unbalanced relationship and not a true friendship.

Just to add, I know several people whose children are missing the last week of school because flights were cheaper. Saving your sanity is every bit as valid a reason as saving money. Your children will benefit far more from a mother who isn't losing it than they will from attending school for a few more days :)

Oh that is grim, the school run is this heat is awful and you are doing a LOT of school running. In all honesty, I'd keep both your child in nursery and your one in FS1 off for the rest of this week and all of next week. Recharge your batteries then when they restart it's only 2 weeks to go. Obviously when they are older it's not an option to do something like that but at their age at this stage of the year they really aren't going to be missing much. Far preferable than getting yourself so run down that you get sick. I know three children that have just been off school for 1-2 weeks as they are sick, this is a tough term, there is a lot of illness about and it's not the end of the world if they miss some days.

Probably, it's time to recruit a healthy housemaid. There were few ''health complainers'' in my past and I know for sure, that once it starts- it NEVER ends. If it's not a health discomfort- it will be smth else: amount of work, working hours, number of PH and DOff etc. Unfortunately, it's not only her discontent- it's a constant stress for you too. Try to help her once, but, if it continues, don't waste your time. Good luck. I understand what you are saying but maybe she is just behaving like this because the OP has indulged her? When I was at school, I worked weekend in a large department store. One of the managers was an older man who got all flustered and let you rest if you told him it was your time of the month and you didn't feel very well. Did people respect him as a boss? No, they laughed behind his back and skived off watching TV in the staff room any chance they got. When the other manager was working, no one tried it on. Some people have a good work ethic and will work well because they take pride in a job well done. But there are plenty of other people who will get away with as little as possible given half a chance. In this case it sounds like the OP's maid is being lazy because the OP is allowing her to be. Kansou, your maid knows the score. If she was in her home country working as a teacher or nurse or shop assistant or in a factory, she wouldn't be allowed to rest 2-3 times a week because she was feeling a bit poorly. She is doing it with you because she can, it's up to you to let her know she can't.

Regardless of whether she is faking it or not, it sounds like minor health quibbles and she shouldn't be bothering her employer with them. I'm not unsympathetic to being actually sick but that doesn't seem to be the case here and it is inappropriate that she is letting it effect her work to such a degree or even making her employer aware of it to be honest. She should just be getting on with things like most people have to. edited by Daza on 01/06/2014

If it is just something minor I would expect her to suck it up and get on with her job like everyone else has to when they aren't feeling great. If she feels it is worse she could choose to take the day off work but I'd be clear she only had a set number of paid sick days per year and after that they are unpaid. I wouldn't agree to extra rests or daytime naps, it would be either you work the day or you don't. Of course if she suddenly felt unwell halfway through the day she could take the rest of the day off but it would count as half a sick day. I don't see why you should treat it any differently to sick days in any other job.

Start as you mean to go on and sort it out now, the longer you leave it the harder it will be. Stop worrying about offending her, it's a job, everyone needs training in a new job. Don't just tell her, SHOW her. This is how you change a cot (whilst doing it), this is how long it takes. Even if you have to do it for every task, several times over it, it will still be worth the effort. Also, if she is new to living here, there will probably be plenty of things that we take for granted that she should just know but she might not. I've had to show two maids how to put a seatbelt on, they'd never worn one before.

Dated for 3 years, engaged for 1 year, married for 9 years. I was 24 and he was 31 when we started dating. Not sure how but I *knew* it was right. Being exhausted from having young children has put a strain on things at times but I've never doubted for a second that I made the right (and a great!) choice for a husband and the father of my children. No doubts before we were married either. Never forget that if you are planning on children, it's not just about choosing a husband, you are also choosing the father your children will have. Choose someone who will be a great Dad and will love them and do anything to make them happy. Also don't forget that any traits your husband has that drive you mad, Sod's law your children will inherit them so be sure you can manage them several times over ;)

Hi, It must be tough at that age since they need you to assist in play...be comforted that she'll soon be at the age where she can play on her own once you start her off with a suitable toy/book/game and you can sit and rest. In the meantime, can you put her in nursery 5 days and try and get a rest in the morning while the baby is napping to reset your energy to cope with the rest of the day? Having an active toddler and a new baby is tiring but it is manageable and doesn't last for too long. Don't forget the arrival of a new baby is also a confusing time for a toddler, immediately sending them off to nursery five mornings a week might create more problems than it solves. If they are used to a couple of mornings with mummy, I'd be inclined to keep that, enough has just changed in their little world as it is. edited by Daza on 01/06/2014

You can get low-fat versions though and it is a much healthier fat than double cream isn't it? I don't think you need a lot of it either. edited by plum2 on 01/06/2014 I love coconut milk and always get the full cream versions, I don't buy low fat anything. Following all things in moderation, its perfectly healthy. Research on such things changes all the time but the current thinking is that saturated fats are not the enemy they were once thought to be. I tend to go on how I feel rather than current fads and eating good amounts of coconut milk and coconut oil, I feel great. I'm a big fan of plant based fats :)

Love comes and goes, it grows and it can go away. If you marry for love only, what do you do when the love goes away? What basis does the marriage have left then? Stay for the kids? If I marry someone for his character, his views on marriage and the future he wants and we have same values, then that love will grow. And when that loves eventually might go away, we still have all those other things that keeps our bond. Marroosh, this is a totes personal question, but have you ever been in love? Because on paper you can be a perfect match with someone, your views, your morals, your ideas for the future but for what ever reason that spark just isn't there and never will be. Love will never grow, I'm sure you could make a life together but I'm just as sure you will always yearn for something more. Being in love is marvellous and whilst that love may ebb and flow if you at least have had it together once, you can work on getting it back.

Lol it seems the ladies here are against the no dating route. Why waste time if you're suitable? You really get to know the person when you live in the same house, but the most important things you can find out about a guy by just asking the questions. Also, what is the reason to get married? Are you in love, does the person share the same values and are you really compatible (wanting the same out of marriage, kids, culture etc) ? In my opinion, marriage based on the second will be most successful. If you think he's your guy, go for it. Ooo, call me a cynic but asking questions, you may get answers but you might not get the truth.....

Sorry to say it Sal123 but it sounds like your daughter is simply ready to give up her nap. The transition time can be tough as they still do get tired but it doesn't last forever. I don't think there is any 'normal' when it comes to the age children give up their nap, all my children have stopped napping at around 18 months but I've known some 5 year olds who still nap. Until around age 3 1/2 I've always insisted on 'quiet time'. I read them a few books in bed then leave them to read quietly themselves. Twenty minute minimum once I've left the room, that gives them a chance to fall asleep if they need to which on occasion they still do. It's bad luck that it has coincided with the arrival of the new baby but not much you can really do about it. You'll get through it, honest. Good luck :)

I treat our maid as I treated people reporting to me in my previous job, it really is no different than any other employee relationship unless you let it be. On day one I am very clear that bad moods and sulking are not acceptable, if there is a problem I expect her to tell me immediately and we will sort it out. In reciprocation, I don't subject our maid to my bad moods either and if I am unhappy with something I too will tell her immediately. I couldn't bear the passive aggressive relationship that seems to be quite common with maids and don't think it is helpful for a good working relationship. I explain that I will not give loans so don't ask. I don't get involved in her personal life and don't subject her to mine. If I'm going to have an argument with my husband I'll do it once she has finished work or is somewhere she can't hear :) For me, the most important thing is that I treat her with respect. I would never look down on her or feel sorry for her. She works hard, does a great job looking after my home and I admire her for doing it all to support her entire family back home with very little gain for her.

Do you mean a proper nanny or a maid who does childcare? If it's a proper qualified nanny, I used to know one working here and she once told me she got paid the same as she would in London. No idea how much that actually is, maybe one of the other ladies will have more of an idea. If you mean a maid, the minimum salary for a Filipino maid is 1400. As far as I'm aware other nationalities don't have a minimum salary. There is a huge range that people pay maids, anything from 700 AED to 3000+ AED has been mentioned on here. As for the process, if you do a search there is plenty of information on here for hiring both a qualified nanny and a maid.

Because if the maid has a day off, you don't have it! Moreover my friends sometimes lend me their maids but of course I pay good extra for it and provide a taxi to come and go back. Are you talking about a maid or a vacuum cleaner? You've never had a live in maid yet you seem to have very set ideas of how you should treat one. Which by the way, is coming across as terribly. I pity whomever you hire, it seems that you are planning on having her look after the huge garden you will have because you are too tight to also pay for a gardener. She will be responsible for cleaning your home, cooking your husband breakfast at 5.30am, welcoming your children off their school buses because you don't want to be stuck at home waiting for them. She'll be evening babysitting and it doesn't sound like she is going to be getting a day off. Heaven forbid you won't have *it* for a day. Yet you consider all of this 'a small effortless job'???? Why don't you trying doing it all for a few weeks and see how small and effortless it really is?

I think you must be careful, dear ppg13, about polarising your idea of the housemaid and rest; the problem lies in the fact that when the maid has her rest she is on the whole in her room, alone; so I doubt many maids return to the kitchen/main house feeling energized, enthusiastic and happy after even hours and hours of rest. Neither should you expect "positive energy" as not even the best maids feel positive about cleaning toilets and bathrooms. I think it better may be to hope the maid returns after rest of course rested, but that she returns "normal", ready to get back to work in a normal, okay content-as-anyone-can-be who has to clean toilets way. Conversely, if she is neither energised, enthusiastic nor happy, I don't think that necessarily means she is overworked or tired. Let's face it, it's not a very uplifting or edifying job, so the best we can hope for in all fairness is that she is fine living and working with us and is relatively happy with the way things are. What's wrong with cleaning toilets for a living? It's not just maids who clean toilets, it is a job that millions of people do the world over. One of my school friends mother's was a hospital cleaner, she must have seen some pretty grim sights at work but she was just a normal happy mum. Another school friend's mother was our cleaner, I remember her as always bubbly and smiling, certainly not 'content-as-anyone-can-be who has to clean toilets'. ETA: ummmuhammad123 I should mention that I do like a lot of what you have posted, I just don't agree that cleaning toilets is such a terrible thing :) edited by Daza on 30/05/2014

Once my children are adults, if they tell me they are going to Amsterdam and are planning on visiting a coffee shop, no, I won't be horrified. Bands have been getting up to such things for a long time, previous generations seemed to cope with their idols not being whiter than white without all having to emulate them and turn in to a generation of delequints. There is no reason the youth of today can't cope too.

A little taken aback here by the it's k if you are a celeb to smoke what you want and behave like a complete pillock. Wow no wonder society and so many youth are so confused! Parents have soo much to answer for. Didn't buy tickets, wouldn't buy tickets and actually found the sell out quite farcical. I'm of the view that it is perfectly ok for anyone, celeb or not, to smoke something if they are in a country that legally entitles them to do so. As for behaving like a complete pillock, the word should not have been used and he should apologise for it.
