Does anyone here use all natural / organic beauty products? I use natural/organic skin care but not make up. I would if I could get decent stuff here, not found any and never organised enough when I'm away.

I think you're right there, probably much higher (not lower, surely!). I'm a bit behind, not having lived there now for 5 years :D Just did a quick check, 1310 in 2012, it was higher than that when you lived there. Don't worry, I fully have the rose tinted glasses on about NZ too ;) Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that. Anyway, none if that changes how bad the road toll is here. I've always loved driving here but SMBZ Road is getting increasingly scary. I drive on it daily on the school run and there seem to be more and more awful accidents on it. People just drive like total idiots.

Oh how terrible. His brother will never happily celebrate his wedding anniversary :(. People here just don't seem to think of the ramifications. Someone told me that for the first half of last year, the count of road deaths was in the 700's!!!!! I'm from Australia and we're appalled if the year's tally goes over 20. something really has to be done. I agree the road toll here is appalling but there is no way it's 20 in Australia!

I took the children there mid morning one day last week. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. The service was quick and friendly and the children liked their food. It was quick easy stuff though, omelette, fruit salad and pastries. They had a great time in the play area. There was also a nice selection of bread to take home.

and just they don't have professionalism - and that's why they do work as maids That's not true Goro, there are professional and unprofessional maids, just like any job. Our maid is totally professional. I'm sure she would love to be, and be great at, being a teacher or something like that but her family couldn't afford to educate her and she can get a good salary being a maid so that is what she does. She supports her family and her salary pays for her younger sister to be educated so she will have more options in life.

Im sorry but she has working hours, she doesnt want to baby sit and work longer than you pay her for so why should she? She has deliberately taken a job as a live out maid so she doesnt have to wrk at night and you know full well thats how she feels Get a baby sitter from a service or a friend to look after your child The OP said the maid was told in her interview that some babysitting would be required at weekends. If she didn't like it she shouldn't have taken the job. Given how she is behaving and that she is doing a computer course it sounds like she doesn't want to be a maid any more. I'm all for bettering your job prospects and good for her but until she gets another job she is a maid. If she can't suck that up there is no reason why the OP should have to put up with her attitude.

In the real world I'd consider it unacceptable for a boss to resort to shouting and name calling. I never did and I had several total idiots reporting to me. I would never expect a teacher to behave like a saint but name calling is taking it too far. If they can't take the frustrations of the job they should find another one.

I'd speak to the teacher and if I was unhappy with the response I'd go to the head teacher. No need to go in guns blazing, calm and rational is much more productive to resolving it. Before doing so however I'd be very clear with my child that they had better be telling me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth or there would be serious consequences. There was a poster on here a while back who spoke to the school after her (much younger) child told her some things that had been happening that the mother was concerned about. It turned out that her child made the whole thing up.

I wouldn't stand for the silent treatment from any employee in any job. Nor would I feel comfortable having someone who is so obviously angry with me and behaving like this responsible for my small child. If she wants to break her contract then I'd release her on the condition she finds another job and gets transferred quickly. Without actually being in the situation I'm unsure if I'd insist she pay back the remainder of her visa. At the least I wouldn't pay out for holiday or flights, if she breaks the contract she isn't entitled to them. I'd also be honest with her future employee about why she is going so at least they would be warned that babysitting is not an option. If she doesn't accept your terms or can't find another job quickly then I'd send her home. Which might sound a bit harsh but I don't see how the situation is going to improve. Even if you lay down the law and she seems to accept it she will revert to sulking if she doesn't get her own way at some point. Either way, I wouldn't want her working for me any longer.

I like to see and expect the best in people rather than the worst. That's great kelly1814 but you've just hired your first maid. After you've employed a few you might be a bit more wary. I didn't like the idea of holding a maid's passport until I had one abscond.....

My CFO has huge amount of money going across his desk and in the company safe. There is no camera trained on his desk. I like to see and expect the best in people rather than the worst. There may not be a camera trained on his desk but your company will get audited on a regular basis to make sure he's not cooking the books. It's a safeguard to help protect your company from any bad egg employees. Just as cameras are a safeguard to help protect children.

I have a maid and no cameras but I'm a SAHM, if I worked then I'd probably install them. Not hidden, I'd be open about it but if I had a baby/ small child at home I'd like to see that all was well in their day. Plenty of nurseries and other businesses have cameras, I don't see it as any different and no invision of her privacy. I'd never put a camera in her room but anywhere else in the house, yes.

How about cleaning your own house, walking your own dog and cooking for the kids? *Yawn* Really Fijifranny? Like that has not been said on here ad nauseam. Of course the vast majority of people [b'>can[/b'> do the above, they just might not [b'>want[/b'> to if given the option. I have a maid and love it. Lots of free time with my children and nights out with my husband whenever I want. Or spending large amounts of my time and energy cleaning and doing the vast pile of laundry that is created by having four children. It's a no brainer for me. I am also capable of cutting and colouring my own hair and painting my own nails. Shockingly, I choose to have someone else do it because they do a better job and it's easier for me. How about you? Do you do it ALL yourself or choose to have help in some areas to make life easier?

*sigh* I know what you are saying MG. That's just our reality with a family with three kids. But it would be nice for our DEWA bills to be less than our mortgage on our house in the states. LOL Some of the townhouses in The Ranches have four bedrooms upstairs (one is small but can still fit a double bed) and you would halve your DEWA bill.

I don't know if they are harem pants exactly but that touristy little stretch of shops just back from the creek in Bastikiya sells something similar. Wide elastic waist, pouffy legs with elastic at the ankle, loads of different prints. I paid 40 dirhams but you could bargain. They are super comfortable and I think I look excellent in them :D

You are not actually in a position here to partition anything - you are a guest in this country at best. While your intentions may be honourable, I suggest you rethink your plan. Totally agree. Tattler, if you really feel you must do something I suggest waiting until you no longer live in the UAE. You don't want to find yourself being accused of [url=http://edition.cnn.com/2013/12/23/world/meast/uae-american-sentence/'>defaming the UAE's image abroad[/url'>

Just traffic mayhem? Safety and security? Really? Have you read what people actually went through on the Palm that night? It sounded like a zombie riot movie! People blocking the paths of buses and forcing themselves on, making them totally over crowded, fights, pushing shoving, many were injured. People urinating and vomiting everywhere. Reading some accounts, I'm glad I was nowhere near any of that. Yes, it sounds awful, I wouldn't go near there on NYE and I feel sorry for those caught up in it. I've just been reading about a teenage fighting for his life in Sydney after an unprovoked attack in Kings Cross on NYE. The police have been talking about the appalling behaviour of some people, it doesn't just happen here. I've been caught up in awful NYE 'celebrations' in a NZ holiday hotspot with rampaging people and bottles being hurled at police. None of this means those countries aren't capable of holding world class events. I don't mean disrespect to anyone here and I also apply it to myself but what happened is a big talking point in our small lives. It doesn't mean that Dubai can't manage anything and that it can't host a great Expo. edited by Daza on 02/01/2014

[b'>If Dubai can't manage one night[/b'>, which supposedly has been orgainsed for a while, how will they manage the influx of people and cars over a period of six months. And yes I know we have a few years to get ready for this, but..... But in most areas Dubai did manage, and manage well. Not the Palm obviously but by it's design it is never going to be able to cope with a large influx of people. Thankfully Expo is not going to located on The Palm.

All I can say is that I hope a lesson has been learned from all of this for the future. [b'>People will be looking at us now in preparation for Expo[/b'>. Do you really think so GE? I don't. All the reports I've seen all over the world have highlighted the fantastic fireworks, there has been no coverage of what is being discussed on here. I haven't heard any stories of near riots from the Downtown area, it all seems to have gone off really well there. Heavy traffic of course but that is to be expected. The problem seems to have been the Palm, especially for concert goers. I honestly don't think that anyone with any sort of clout with Expo is going to be reading EW or dedicated facebook pages and saying 'well they messed that up, better keep a close eye on Expo preparations'. On the contrary, I think they are more likely to be looking at the incredible show that Downtown put on and thinking the right choice was made. I'm quite willing to concede I could be totally wrong and they are all quaking in their boots :)

Happy New Year all! Another grinch here - stayed in with hubby and DD, ordered takeaway and watched a movie, was fast asleep by 10:30pm. Baby awake at 5:45am so I couldn't have handled a late night. Plus the roads were empty this morning, no queues in C4 at 9am and we just enjoyed a really pleasant lunch at the Monty which is I think how we will celebrate NYE in future or at least til the kids are teenagers who sleep til midday! Gone are the days of dancing on tables, drinking til I forget my name and stumbling home at dawn! x Happy New Year TDB! We celebrated with a lovely breakfast at The Address Downtown. I do miss dancing on tables though, I hope my days of doing so aren't totally over :)

Personally I think it's time Sandance looked for another venue. The Palm is just too much of a nightmare each time. The other hotels must be furious too. I wonder if many of the guests who paid 5000 dirhams for a gala dinner at another hotel made it....

The Lakes and other developments are restricted to residents and their guests and I think the Palm should be the same. It's a private development funded and maintained by the owners & residents and shouldn't be open to everyone. Obviously the fronds are already restricted but I don't think that would be feasible to restrict the entire Palm due to all the hotels and other businesses. The retail centers and Golf Clubs in The Ranches and Lakes are open to the public, it's just the residential areas that aren't.

I feel sorry for newbies and tourists but I don't understand why anyone else would go anywhere near the traffic hotspots on NYE unless they were fully prepared to be stuck in traffic for hours. There is bad traffic in the same places every year and surely everyone knew this year was going to be worse due to the world record attempt fireworks and Palm closures? It's a bit like going to Glastonbury and complaining if you get muddy. I imagine the fireworks were incredible in person but they were still pretty amazing on the news this morning :) I went to The Address Downtown just after 8am this morning, there were lots of fences still up but the area looked pretty tidy, a pretty good feat considering the amount of people they had. Someone mentioned getting home further down this thread, I've just seen a comment on Sandance's facebook page from someone who left the event at 2.15am and got home at 7am. Ouch.

Would love to be in bed as usual, but I guess neighbours above will dance and drink and won't let us sleep anyway. Actually until what time is it allowed to be noisy this night? Oke, I've let all this negativity go on, but this is the limit. I really hope you're kidding! Do you people not have a couple of good friends to spent a fun and relaxing time at home with? There is something in between [b'>going to bed grumpy[/b'> and paying a fortune for some lame party. Lighten up, it's New Years Eve ✨??? There's no grumpy about it, I'll be going to bed with a smile as always :) I find the thought of staying up late much less appealing as I'll be breastfeeding a baby in the night and up with him and three other little ones in the morning. Nothing says ruination of late night fun and relaxing like small children. Although if you are lactating and offering to take over night time and early morning duties I'll get my party shoes on ;)

The Turkish ice cream man puts on a great show, throwing scoops in the air etc and he has a long stick like thing that he can use to grab the ice cream back as you walk away. Does anyone else feel they've overdone the fireworks here? When I was young you'd see fireworks once in a blue moon and it was something really special. Here we see them all the time and are only impressed with a huge, long display. Another first world problem. If I was paying 5k for my night I'd be well peed off if the ice cream man nicked my ice cream back ;) Fireworks are totally overdone here. I love it when I'm in NZ and there is a display that your average Dubian wouldn't even bother posting to social media about and everyone is oohing, ahhing and wowing over it.

I've never seen a woman get upset when offered a seat or had a door held open for her. Does this really happen or is it one of those urban myths that tries to justify declining courtesy. Bearing in mind the natural phenomena that occurs with every passing year that "things were better in them thar days". I remember about 20 years ago a women calling my father a male chauvinist *** for holding a door open for her. Only example I can think of though!

I always feel and look better plus have much more energy when I don't eat bread, pasta, rice or potatoes. You can replace them with with grains such as quinoa and buckwheat and pulses such as lentils and chickpeas. I eat loads of raw vegetables (lightly cooked good too) and nuts. Have lean protein. Good quality oils and vinegars on salad. A great afternoon pick up is a banana blended with whatever milk you drink and 1 tablespoon of chia. You can still have spag bol but instead of having it over spaghetti make vegetable noodles with a julienne peeler. Courgettes, carrots and beetroot are all great for this. It's pretty easy when you get used to it and makes such a difference in how you feel.

I don't think that Lolacat was suggesting that the OP needs to financially support this pregnancy and childbirth, more that she was pointing out the sad contrast between the two kinds of "expatwomen". [b'>Accident of birth, it really is the greatest of life's lotteries[/b'>. It is indeed. I'm reminded of it every day with our maid as she is the same age as me but our lives are very different.
