I am a western expat and I do expect my maid to sleep with my baby. My previous maid slept with my son till he was 6 and she was happy: she was scared sleeping alone in the tiny mail's room, and it was shocking to her to let the child sleeping alone. You were fuming when you heard this lady asking this your maid , but did you ask your maid what she thought about it? Many would love the idea of sleeping with a baby. If it works for you and it works for your children and your maid then that is great. Obviously maids need to fit the family they are living with and I'm sure emmess' maid will find a family that that understands she would like a bit of privacy and a room to herself. For me, the thought of having a maid share a room with my children is abhorrent. I want to be the one that comforts them in the night if they have a bad dream, are unwell or just need a cuddle. I wouldn't employ a maid who was scared of sleeping alone or found it shocking that my children sleep alone.

Personal space really is a western concept. So in all those huge houses in mainly non-expat areas everyone is sharing one room? I don't know anyone western or not that would be happy sharing a room with someone else's children or a drumset. Rather than a western concept I'd be more inclined to think that personal space really is a higher socio-economic concept. If you can afford some personal space, you choose to have it. Emmess, hope your maid finds a decent employer soon. I can't understand why you would have your maid and children sharing a room either. Or why you would let your children encroach on her space.

Jaundice can cause yellowing of skin as can other things. I have a minor liver condition that can give me a bit of a yellow look if I get run down. You really need to take him to a doctor asap, it may well be nothing major but he does need to be given a proper check up.

Is there a mum from your DD school that you can make an arrangement with? In your situation I don't think people will begrudge giving you DD a lift home till end of school year. edited by starsouthern on 01/05/2013 I agree. I'd be happy to help out a family in this situation. Could you send an email to the other parents in your daughters class explaining your situation and asking if anyone could help?

Hi Marian You won't have done your baby any lasting harm but it's best not to use stock cubes in their food. Baby food may taste bland to us but they really don't need the added salt of stock cubes. There are some great baby food ideas and tips on child nutrition [url=http://www.annabelkarmel.com/'>here[/url'>

I blame the parents too. So many lazy lazy people who would rather double park on busy roads, or roundabouts than park and actually have to walk a bit further.

I recently had problems with iron and found juicing helpful. I made a juice every day with apples, carrots and parsley (and sometimes spinach and ginger). It tasted better than it sounds and really helped. Floradix liquid iron supplement is gentle on the stomach and also really good. edited by Daza on 30/04/2013

Hi nspree Welcome to the Ranches! The metro doesn't start until 1pm on Fridays which is why the buses also start so late. I've heard a lot of maids use private taxis, they are illegal so cheaper than RTA taxis. There are always lots of maids in the playgrounds at after school time, I'm sure if she asks around someone could let her know about car sharing etc. Probably not a good idea to use a private taxi alone...

Greenheart's produce is fantastic and they they do a lot of heirloom varieties which I love. They've just opened a shop by Arabian Ranches and they do delivery. They sell their own organic locally produced vegetables, eggs, honey and cheese plus organic fruit sourced by another company from abroad. The Change Initiative is also great for eco products. It's really big and they have a large variety of things including homewares, toys and food. They have a great eco friendly cleaning products section. Spinneys Motor City often has Rachel's Organic Milk.

I've only got experience of British Curriculum so this info is for that. Most (but not all) schools start children the September after they turn 3. Your daughter will be 3 in Dec 2015 so she will start September 2016. Some schools don't start until the September after the child turns 4 - for your daughter this would be September 2017. Schools have different policies with regards to waiting lists but in general get on a list asap - even right from birth. Some schools charge to go on a waiting list, some don't. I'd decide on curriculum first. After that, commute time is REALLY important. The school run can be a bit of a hard slog so the closer the better.

I agree with the other ladies, if I'm going to see someone with a new baby/babies, I take food for them, I'd never expect them to provide snacks! If you do want to do it though you could: Get bread and dips delivered from an Arabic restaurant, hommous, moutabel etc and add some chopped vegetables. Chopped fruit and biscuits or dried fruit, nuts and chocolate if you feel like something sweet.

In that case I doubt it's the constant lifts/expectations of lifts that is the real problem for the OP. There's more at play in the dynamic of a friendship than who does/gives what. To be fair, I don't ferry kids in *return* for the lifts my friends give me when/if they offer them..i do it because it's part of the fabric of a childs social life to go and be somewhere and doing something in particular. Not every Mum can drop it all to get a child to where ever, and not all of the Mums are my particular friends. (Or have ever given me lifts! that's not the point) Comparing ferrying around children and ferrying around adults if like comparing apples and pears though. I have been more than happy to drop children home on a regular basis without giving it a second thought, regardless of if I know the parents. A while back I dropped a little boy home three times a week for a term, not a single word of thanks from his parents (who I didn't know) but I didn't for a second consider not doing it. I sure wouldn't have done that for an adult who couldn't say thank you.

Arohadxb, what you are talking about is give and take which is what friends do. I'd always help a friend out, I certainly would never expect anything in return but I know that with friends, good deeds always even out in the end. What the other ladies are talking about is just take take take from some people.

Yes, you can get it done at the same time as a c-section. The paperwork (with husband's permission) has to put in to the MOH and can take a while to process so you need to do it earlier rather than later in your pregnancy. I didn't have it done myself but got told the process in case I wanted it as an option.

Hi Anouja, little girls friendships can be very tricky. Do you have time to invite the girl who is having a birthday over for a play date before the party? She might then decide to invite your daughter to her party or her mother might realise that she has been excluded. If that isn't possible then maybe just explain to your daughter about limited numbers at parties etc but have something nice planned for her on the same day. That way you can break the news but follow it with a 'but guess what we have planned' to lessen the blow.

I've been to Phuket and the Seychelles with young children and both were great. Phuket particularly easy and relaxing. The flights are a little bit longer than you'd like though - about 6 hours for Phuket, can't quite remember for the Seychelles, 5 hours maybe? Both direct flights though so very easy.

I think they are pretty age appropriate too. Obviously my children can't do them to the standard that our maid does but they can do them nonetheless! My old enough for job age children are 3,5 and 7. I don't have them doing a lot of the things on a day to day basis but they do a lot of the things on the list. The only stand outs that they never do are cleaning windows and bathrooms, vacuum and hanging our/putting away clean laundry. They do occasionally do things that aren't on the list like clean the car. I do think it's really important that children leave home with the skills to look after themselves and their homes. I'd feel that I was doing them a huge disservice if they were unable to do that. When I moved into my first flat when I was 18 I was completely shocked at how incapable and clueless about domestic matters some of my flatmates were. They couldn't even cook an egg or know how to use a washing machine. Why would you send your children out in to the world without teaching them the skills to look after themselves? Do you really want them to be living on McDonalds because they don't understand meal planning etc? It still amuses me that I had to show my husband how to mow a lawn when we moved in to our first house together. I'd been doing it since I was 11.

Thanks everyone for the advice. [b'>And yes, he did take the dates last year as well![/b'>! We were away, but I would have given them to him anyway, as we don't eat them - but he never asked, just assumed he could take them! Our maid went out and told him that he can't take them all, so he gave her 1 bag out of what was probably 10! He probably did make a fortune (and after ripping us off and probably everyone else too!) edited by emmess on 25/04/2013 So he stole twice! I am trying to be more assertive and just sent an email regarding a weekend trip to a resort emphasizing the importance of leaving the resort on time as I need to be back in time for my baby's bathtime, and I just got the rudest response from her saying this emphasis was unnecessary and [b'>we are all grown adults[/b'>! Not grown up enough to get your own car and driving license so it would seem! FGS! That is absolutely beyond the pale. Get your brave knickers on and reply to her saying that if she is a grown adult then you are going to stop ferrying her around like she's a teenager. Does she even realise you are actually doing her a favour? Time to stand up for yourself, she can find someone else to use as a doormat.

Honestly TDB, from a few things you've said on here, you really need to kick some of your 'friends' to the curb. Even when I was a student and driving around carless friends, everyone ALWAYS said thank you. If they hadn't they'd be catching the bus. Keep making yourself unavailable, soon enough you'll be a taxi driver for your children, your friends are old enough to sort themselves out.

Hi Forty_Winks, I've been up Burj Khalifa and would be quite happy to take a new baby up. The only thing I would say is to take a carrier for your baby. We left our buggy at the desk at the bottom, I can't remember if this was voluntary or not but it gets pretty busy and a buggy could be a pain.

Poppy82, I can't speak for all schools but I know at least one school that will offer an assessment (which of course you pay for....) then put you on the waiting list if the assessment is passed. So a passed assessment doesn't necessarily mean offer of place. LemonyLime, as the posters have said, for FS1, the assessment isn't really about academic knowledge it's more about how your child interacts. When my children had theirs they just played, listened while the teacher read a book, did a drawing, talked a bit about colours and the drawing and had a chat. No stress, no pressure, they enjoyed it.

Like perkynana says, they go through phases and the best thing you can do is try not to stress about it and just keep offering a wide range of choices. Don't worry, your son will eat when he's ready. My children have all gone through phases of eating so little I wonder where on earth they get their energy from. By 14 months none of my children wanted to eat purees, they were all about the finger food. What sort of finger foods are you trying?
