Do you have other children? I've always found that having them share a room with a brother or sister (or both!) has worked wonders for helping them sleep. Do you keep a light on for him? All of mine like a light on and get quite anxious if I ever turn it off. Or you could try buying a soft toy that you can press that will light up and tell him it is his friend and to press it if he wakes in the night.

I didn't bother having six week check ups after my second and third babies, both were c-sections. Didn't cause any problems that I know of!

Don't stress about it JPS1, it's simple really. You are the employer, you set the rules. Your maid isn't a mind reader you need to tell her what you expect of her. If you don't want her using her cellphone during working hours then just tell her that. It's not an unreasonable request, in my corporate job pre children we certainly weren't allowed to spend our working hours on personal calls or texting. Telling her doesn't need to be a confrontation and you shouldn't feel awkward about it, nor should it be up for negotiation if it's something you want to implement. It sounds like there is another issue as well in that she didn't help you when your children were screaming. Again, she's not a mind reader, if you need help, tell her. It may be that in her previous job her employer didn't want her help under such circumstances. It will make it very difficult for you having a maid if you are scared to tell her when something is not to your liking. You need to be able to set rules and give her instructions without fearing that she will get moody and take it out on your children. If she was going to behave like that then it's not worth the trouble employing her. You'd probably end up behaving passive aggressively anyway which would create a nasty atmosphere in your home. Most people work better within clear guideline, it's up to you to set them.

Unfortunately mothers (or just women in general) tend to be each other's worst enemies. When we should support each other so many seem so quick to judge instead. Regardless of whether we work or not. You get criticised for working, criticised for not working, judged for putting your child in to nursery, judged for keeping them home, judged for leaving them with a maid, judged for not leaving them with a maid for some time of your own.....the list is endless. You're absolutely right SEY83, it's tough whether you work or whether you don't. I'm a SAHM and worry that I'm not setting a good example to my children about what women are capable of outside the home. I don't get much 'me' time either, one day if I stop having babies I might but I'm not there yet! A few years ago I woman I had just met asked me what I did. I said said I was a SAHM, what do you do? She said, 'Oh, I could never do that whole mani/pedi thing, I need a bit more, I write for a magazine'. She then proceeded to tell me that she was a beauty writer and about all the spas she reviewed for her job. I managed to resist the urge to point out that she did in fact do 'the whole mani/pedi thing' she just got paid for it. Funny thing is, she had a second baby and is now a SAHM herself.

It sounds like your son eats a great diet! I've always found that mine go on and off mashed food/finger food at that age. It may be that he has sore gums from teething so is finding mashed food easier at the moment. One of my children around that age was obsessed with porridge and would eat it every meal given the chance, it was just a phase and didn't last long. I've always been happy to give my children white rice. I always give multigrain bread but aren't too concerned about brown rice as none of them have been that keen on it. I'd much prefer that they were eating veg mixed with white rice than ending up eating nothing if I mix it with brown. Save your worrying for if he one day decides that he'll only eat chicken nuggets ;)

We did it three years ago and at that point the law had just changed and you had to go through an agency, direct hires were not allowed. As far as I know, this is still the case. It was very annoying as we found her and did all the paper work but still had to fork out thousands for the agency to actually sign off on it all. Maids also have to do a course in the Philippines before they are allowed to exit the country, it all takes a while so you might be struggling to get her here by mid feb. I can't remember which agency we used sorry, if you contact to Philippine Consulate I'm sure they will be able to advise you.

All my children have been the same around that age - we call it the witching hours. I honestly can't remember how many weeks it lasted for but I don't think it's that long. Retrospectively of course, at the time it feels like it goes on for ever! Like AnonDubai, I can't give any advice, it's just one of those things that passes in time. I have vague recollections of breastfeeding my last baby throughout my other children's dinner/bath/story/bed routine in order to try to keep him quiet while I got them organised. He was much less likely to cry when he had a boob in his mouth :)

The prevalence of maids does make it harder for mums to meet other mums. In the UK there were always other mums at the playground to talk to, here it's mostly maids. I generally end up bored witless at the playground.

I got it all here. I have two bins and order bran when needed. It's only a thin sprinkle of bran in the bin every evening so it lasts ages. How much you make depends on how much waste you have from your kitchen. I have a lot as we go through huge amounts of fruit/veg so there are lots of peelings and cuttings. My children are terrible at finishing their lunchboxes so that also goes straight in there, it makes me feel slightly better about the wastage! As long as you maintain it properly by sprinkling bran when needed and draining it doesn't smell at all so is great for keeping in the kitchen. When I wasn't in Dubai I had a traditional outdoor compost but it don't like to do that here as we are in a residential area and it tends to smell in the hot months and attracts rats. http://bokashidubai.com/

I make my own fertiliser using a Bokashi compost bin. It lives under the sink in the kitchen, all kitchen waste (minus meat) goes in to it along with Bokashi powder. There is a tap off the bottom that you drain liquid off that is great fertiliser. The contents get buried in the garden once a week which keeps all my veggies and fruit trees fertilised. TDB, as other posters have said, basil grows far better outside, if it's getting a bit dusty just spray the plant with water to clean it. When picking pinch out leaves from the top off the plant, this encourages new growth.

I haven't been but I've heard really good things about the brunch at Al Badia. It's picnic on the grass style so lots of space for the little ones to run around. I really like Beachcombers too but the kid's room is awful. Dingy dark little box by the door. Not such a problem with this lovely weather if you sat outside and they could play on the sand.

fils Thank you for the clarification. I assumed the singular would be minus the 's' eg. 1 fil, 50 fils. In the same way that it's 1 dollar but 50 dollars. Interesting that it's not, you learn something every day!

I too find Hugh Jackman's devotion to his wife swoon worthy. Ryan Gosling is lovely. And since this is a question about 'secret' crushes, I get wildly inappropriate crushes when I'm pregnant that make me cringe post baby. This pregnancy, I've been casting a glad eye over .....Justin Bieber. I'll get my coat.

Honestly, I got confused as well when my maid asked me that previously. For me, it's paid annual leaves, meaning that when she is away on her holiday for that 1 month, her salary is as usual. Not an extra on top of that. Exactly right blimey. She is entitled to 12 months pay a year, not 13.

I've got young children, often shop with coffee and have always managed to get my veg weighed without pouring it on their heads. My teachers at school often did playground duty with a mug of hot tea or coffee in their hand. No lid even - the horror! Can't ever remember anyone getting burnt despite the ball games, tag etc going on around them.

Hi dubai1990 The Christchurch rental market is a bit of a nightmare since the earthquake. You might strike it lucky but you may well have compromise on quite a few things. My brother recently bought a house there because they were struggling to find anywhere decent to rent. The problem is a lack of housing pushing up prices. It's not so bad buying a house because people are hesitant to buy in case of another big quake. Do you have children? If so, being in the catchment area of a good school is a consideration. Fendalton and Merivale are both good areas. They are close to town and have a nice feel. I love Sumner, it has a great beach and nice villagey feel although I didn't make it out there when I was last in Chch so not sure how it's fared in the quake. I've got a few friends that live in Rolleston and really like it. It's a bit of a drive out of town and slightly dull but has a nice village centre and was largely unaffected by the quake. There are lots of nice modern houses, it might be worth checking out rentals there is you don't mind a bit of a drive.

I don't have any personal experience with what you have gone through but a few of my friends have conceived very quickly after having a D&C and have said that it is common to be very fertile in the few months afterwards. Hi TDB I can't help with any medicine recommendations sorry but are you breast feeding your baby? My third baby was very sensitive to my diet especially when he was very young but I found that cutting out certain foods made a huge difference to how much wind he had and his general comfort levels. It was trial and error working out what disagreed with him and it was very limiting for the first few months but I was able to gradually introduce other foods to my diet when he got a bit older. I found I had to completely cut out wheat, onions, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower and soya as well as other things. I don't eat dairy anyway but assume this would have also upset him as he has a dairy intolerance. It was a pain but worth it as he was a much happier, settled baby once I had it sorted. Ignore me if your baby is bottle fed!
