Make an appointment at your local clinic, here is the link for locations: https://www.dha.gov.ae/en/Facilities/HealthCenters/Pages/default.aspx If you give call the one closest to you they will be able to tell you if it is the right one for you to go to. You will need copies of your daughter's passport, residence visa and National ID card. I don't know exactly what is needed but I'd also take copies of you and your husbands documents along with marriage certificate. I'm sure another poster will be able to advise on this. Unless things have changed vaccinations are free for under fives, I'm not sure what the charge is for a health card for children.

You can use the government hospitals and clinics but you have to pay for it (apart from some emergencies as CP says). If you don't have a health card they will issue you with one. It may be cheaper to use the Iranian Hospital than a government hospital, if you do a search there are threads about it.

Hi Ketchup Standing tickets will have access to grandstand seating on a first come first served basis. http://www.timeoutdubai.com/pictures/venuemap/1d.pdf With parking, every time I've been to a concert or event at the Sevens there have been parking wardens directing you exactly where to park. No idea what time to get there with children in tow, it's a balance between arriving early and hopefully avoiding the worst of the traffic whilst trying not to be sitting around waiting for too long! With the amount of people going I imagine traffic is going to be pretty bad. Think I'll be heading there earlyish and hope my children last the distance. One Direction better not do a Bieber!

It was unfortunate Cherpie and I doubt things ended well for her either. My point is that holding a passport isn't necessarily due to being an oppressive or distrustful. When she first arrived to us she actually gave me her passport unasked and I rather naively thought there was no need to hold it :(

Hiring a maid does come with risks but I choose to minimise that risk by holding the passport. Experience has taught me to do so. Our maid absconded after failing her medical. This was completely unexpected, nothing about her prior circumstances or personality suggested she would abscond but when she realised we had no choice but to send her home she ran. Which I understand but it didn't make sorting it out any easier for us. Added to that was my guilt that she probably went on to be illegally employed by a family that had no idea that she potentially had a serious communicable disease. Do I wish that I had kept hold of her passport hence possibly stopped her running or at the very least made it harder for her to be employed by another family? Absolutely. Will I make the same mistake again? No.

Holding anybody's passport, maid or not, should be illegal. It's their personal right and if they can't be trusted with their own identity, maybe they shouldn't be trusted around your family, period. Rude but my opinion. It really makes people feel undignified and disrespected to not be able to hold their own identity, believe me. And yes, it is hypocritical to complain you'd like to get your own passport in an "emergency" yet don't treat your hired help with the same respect. Have you had a maid abscond Cherpie? It's a nightmare. I disagreed with holding a maids passport until I had a maid abscond, got a ticking off from immigration and went through a lot of worry and expense. Our maid is welcome to leave our employment, through the correct exit channels, at any time and at any point in her contract. She is not welcome to illegally abscond, leaving us a time consuming, expensive and stressful mess to sort out.

We had a maid abscond with her passport and got told off by immigration. Since then we've kept our maid's passport in the safe with our passports. When we are away we leave it with someone who can get it to her in an emergency.

Our first summer here 8 years ago there were tumbleweeds blowing around the Ranches as soon as the schools were off but there isn't the mass exodus there used to be. Much quieter which is lovely but still enough people around to not feel like a ghost town. We've only done the whole summer away once and I hated it. Too long away from my husband and home :)

Hi MM1 You obviously know adopting a cat rather than buying one is the right thing to do or you wouldn't have posted on here. Keep your conscience clear and do the right thing. Is your "need" to have a cat that looks a certain way really worth supporting the horrible practice of kitten factories? If there isn't a market for animals bred in this way then they won't exist. Supporting the practice makes you responsible for the suffering endured. I recently found a stray kitten and Bin Kitty were absolutely fantastic in helping me with what to do and how to find a home for him. I was honestly blown away by how much they went out of their way to help. A woman who has an organisation helping stray cats in the Ranches was also amazing and even helped with the vet bill. If you have found Bin Kitty unhelpful then maybe you should look your attitude to taking on the responsibility of adopting an animal rather than blame them.

Daza, I'm trying to buy a ticket for myself (middle age lady) but my dh & ds are refusing to go....if you're in bronze section and I manage to get a ticket would you consider letting me tag along with you - or at least meet at the venue to sit together.....Won't be offended if you say no :) How could they leave you in the lurch! I'm pleased my children are too young to refuse to go with me ;) I'd be happy to have another *mature* fan to scream along with but we don't have bronze tickets, am hoping we can handle the screaming up close. Good luck finding someone to go with :)

Thank you for all the advice ladies :) I took him to the vet this morning and they cleaned him up and dewormed him. He is around eight weeks old, ginger with lovely markings and very sweet. I'm hoping to find him a foster through Bin Kitty Collective, they have been fantastic.

He's a little ginger chap. Or she, no idea! Thanks Artemis, I'll put out some food and make a nice snuggly box. Our garden is fairly secure so if I block off one exit he will hopefully stay put. If anyone can foster I'd be so grateful!

If you want her to have a good time maybe start by respecting her as your father's choice of partner.. just saying... What about her respecting her partner's daughter and grandchildren? Good luck with your plan. I would take her to the desert and leave her there. Not to mention respecting her partner's right to spend some time with his daughter and grandchildren without it all revolving around her. If she hates it here so much why bother coming?

The man who writes this blog died today. And even though he knew he was going to die he chose to be happy. Truly inspirational. Not everyone has the choice to be happy but if you do, take the time to smell the roses, see the silver linings on every cloud and grab life with both hands :) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/oren-miller/dad-with-stage-4-lung-cancer_b_5940308.html

Kinokuniya have a good selection, they are in the children's section but on the left wall when you enter the area. I bought one for my daughter when she was 9 and it's been really useful. She still uses it as a reference as different issues incidents / questions come up. I think it was called "the book for Girls". it doesn't have any mention of S*X but her Dad had that talk with her separately much to her disgust  We got 'It's Not the Stork' from Kinokuniya, it's very good.

out of curiosity... what ages are your DDs... I'm so lost as to when to start having 'the talk' with mine! My daughter is nine and knows about puberty etc. I haven't done 'the talk' as such, just general open communication about how and why our bodies change etc. She has a lot of questions about everything so I've just answered them rather than gloss over.

It seems very unfair to announce that out of the blue and give people two weeks to come up with the money. Surely they could have announced it before people applied then everyone could have made the decision if they could afford it and also to give people more time to save.

Common sense, that's why. And I find it odd that most of the posts "clutching pearls' at the concept of fake posters, are in general, long established and one would assume "computer savvy" members of EW. There has always been wind up posters on here but people generating traffic as a job and posters that aren't even people are a relatively new phenomenon. It's nothing to do with not being computer savvy, it's just not liking the way things are going on forums.

Blind cords give me the horrors. We got rid of all of ours except one which we keep folded and tied up in a knot well out of reach of children. I enquired about the child safe break cords but no-one had ever heard of them.

No judgments, not much to add, but if I were in your shoes, I would take a home test which you can buy at any pharmacy. That way you don't have a "time-stamp," or any record of a positive pregnancy test on your medical file at a GP and proceed from there. I agree with this. OP, you don't need a GP to confirm the pregnancy, home tests are very accurate and I'm sure like most women you will do more than one anyway! Blood tests only *need* to be done if there are some issues and hormone levels need checked. I haven't had a blood test to confirm pregnancy with any of my children. I had my first baby in the UK where they don't do confirmation blood tests as a matter of course. Blood tests are the norm here, they are yet another thing they can charge you for, but they certainly aren't necessary.

Reem, how awful, you must be beside yourself with worry. I agree with Lolacat and Thunderbird, you need to sit down with a good paediatrician and and sort out a plan of action. Dr Loubser is fantastic and specialises in allergies, eczema etc but a poster on another thread has said he is taking no new patients until May. If I were you I would call and explain the situation, how young your baby is and how desperate you are and if they can't fit you in if they can recommend someone else with experience in what you are dealing with. He is at quite a large practice, they may have another doctor there who can help. Good luck, I know it is not much comfort when you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel but you and your little one will get through this and things will get easier. Hang in there.

There are hundred thousands of expats here and they all have different standards and realistic expectations. We are from different backgrounds, education, work experience and different paths of our lives. I have friends with very different lifestyle from couple with a toddler living in a small one bedroom apartment and family of 5 with dogs and cats living in a small 3 bed townhouse to couples living in a spacious villa in the Ranches and Jumeirah Park, even have children's friends living in palace like villa in Emirates Hills. I am sure every one of them have very different views of what is a minimum of standard of living. I hope the OP has a better idea what her life could look like in Dubai from the replies. That's true Silvstet. I think what it boils down to for me is that I wouldn't live here if my standard of living was significantly less than in my home country. Only the OP knows what her current life is like and hopefully this thread has given her an indication of how it might compare here. Or not :)

We've been very happy here for a good few years although I am starting to long for the green grass of home :) Having a maid definitely has upped the happiness levels of living here. Despite having four young children I don't spend half my time doing laundry and cleaning up the sand that gets absolutely everywhere. It also means that despite no family support I can regularly enjoy an evening out with my husband.
