Mumof2, I've had two children ill this week with fevers and tummy cramps. There is a bug going around which might be what your son has but it could also be related to his reaction. To be totally honest, if one of my children had the symptoms you have described I wouldn't waste time posting on here and I'd keep trying with doctors until I got to the bottom of it. And I'm not normally a run to the doctor kind of person.

Hi mumof2 Rather than just treat the symptoms you also need to try to get to the bottom of what caused the reaction to try to avoid it in future. I really recommend Dr Loubser, he an pediatric allergy specialist and extremely thorough. http://www.ihcdubai.com/doctors/michael-loubser/ I hope your son is feeling better soon. edited by Daza on 19/02/2015

I just couldn't work out why with our potential salary package that we would need@least 35k unless we were planning on bathing in liquid gold and and ripping up the roads in our gas guzzlers to bring little ones to the most overpriced school we could find It also makes a difference why you want to come here, whether to save money or for the experience. When we first arrived my husband was on a decent salary yet we found the start up costs and the million little things we hadn't thought of /realised all added up and it was a couple of years before we were able to start saving a bit of money. Which is fine if you are coming for the experience as we were, not so great if you are here just to save money. We certainly weren't bathing in liquid gold either! Tiptoptoni has a point about schools, we would have loved for our children to go to one of the cheaper good schools but it simply impossible to get a place so we had no option but to go for what was at the time one of the more expensive ones.

Hi trixylou Depending on the area you live in you might need to top up the housing allowance for a villa or townhouse. Check what age the company will pay schooling from, not all companies cover from FS1.

A phone is like a vacuum cleaner, it's a necessity of life. It's not a special gift that says "I love you more than money" Why on earth would you need a special gift in order to know that your husband "loves you more than money". Surely that's a given? Would you still love your husband if he was unable to give you expensive gifts? Do [i'>you [/i'>love [i'>him [/i'>more than money?

If you consider it your obligation to provide health insurance for treatment in Dubai then you can't penalise your maid if that insurance lapses. You could pay for her treatment in Dubai but it will a LOT cheaper to have it done in the Philippines. Our maid had an operation (not covered by insurance) in the Philippines and it worked out about one third of the price than it would have been in Dubai, including her flights. It also meant she had her family around to care for her afterwards. She had a relapse the following year and ended up in a government hospital here, unable to travel as she was too ill. Again, no insurance as it was a pre-existing condition. This is NOT a good place to be in hospital with no insurance. It was costing about 1000 dirhams a night, excluding operations and she was in hospital for a month. The hospital helped us with the bill but it was a pretty scary time financially and awful for her with no family around. When she finally got out of hospital we made the decision to send her home. I felt dreadful but we couldn't continue to pay tens of thousands of dirhams a year for her treatment.

These are [b'>MY[/b'> first hand experiences and of course I am going to take this into account when I come to make the decision about my own children and immunisation. That's what we do as parents, we try to make the best decisions we can for those we love more than anyone based on what we know. I've been thinking about your post regarding your experiences, My decision to vaccinate my children wasn't based on any of my personal experiences, it was based on the experience and knowledge of medical professionals who are far more qualified than me about such things. Doctors and immunologists who have studied and researched for years. Who have furthered research and studies of medical professionals before them, who have the tools of modern medicine available to them and who have dedicated their lives to such study. Of course as parents we try to make the best decisions for our children based on what we know. You may have "researched like crazy" when you were pregnant but do you think your experiences and a few months of research (I'm assuming this means Google as opposed to your own scientifically based research) has more weight than that of the medical community which is completely overwhelming in favour of vaccination?

One, would be that people who choose not to vaccinate in their home country, may choose to vaccinate when they move or travel to countries where childhood diseases have not been all but eradicated. Countries that have all but eradicated certain childhood diseases have been able to do so because of vaccinations. And now some of those awful diseases are making a comeback due to people choosing not to vaccinate. I'm sure no one would ever want to return to the high childhood mortality rates prevalent before vaccinations being available. It doesn't make sense to me not vaccinate on the basis that other people do and that will help keep my child safe. It would be like choosing not to put a seatbelt on my child on the basis that I'm going to trust that everyone else will drive safely and not crash in to me. The vastly reduced probability of children dying from certain diseases since the introduction of vaccines is all the unbiased fact I need.

I'm sorry you lost your baby simpleas :( It's good that you have revived this thread. If just one anti vaxxer reads all the links on it and has a change of heart, great. There is also a clip on youtube of Penn and Teller demonstrating the effectiveness of vaccines vs the side effects using skittles on balls. I won't post a link as it's very sweary but it smashes the arguments to pieces.

She had spotting for two cycles, semi-ignored the first lot (not saying that's right, just repeating what she did and she wishes she hadn't) and then when it continued into second cycle went to the doctors. Your friend was amazingly proactive, good for her. I think a lot of women (myself included) would be inclined to put off getting checked for a lot longer than two months. Thank you for posting this, it's a timely reminder not to delay.

Thanks, I just wondered how one gets checked for ovarian cancer When our old maid was having some of the symptoms of ovarian cancer she had blood tests, ultrasounds and MRIs as part of the diagnostic process. She did have a tumour but it was benign, thank goodness.

[ We've seen quite a few examples of it of late though (i'm thinking of some threads which are now so heavily moderated that it's hard to make head nor tail of them so many "fake" posters have been removed). I can only agree in general but I do detect quite a lot of people who seem to want to create spam. The again I learned the word "spambot" a couple of weeks a go here so who's to say they're actually people! On the other hand Chezmoi is clearly not one of these people and in regards of her point she was nothing but honest and quite reasonable I think....hasn't this gone on long enough? Chezmoi hasn't been duplicitous at all and there is nothing wrong with changing your username for whatever reason. It's the people that have more than one username going at a time and pretend to be two (or more?) different people that I find weird. Spammers/stealth advertisers obviously do it for a reason, to advertise something but there have been a couple of instances lately where advertising has nothing to do with it

Why would anyone bother having more than one username? To agree with themselves? Disagree with themselves? Laugh at their own jokes? And how did people who enjoy such things amuse themselves before the internet? By spreading malicious gossip? Poison pen letters? Gin from 10am? That is a lot of questions but I find such seemingly pointless duplicity totally bizarre.

Some of these men have shown me more kindness as I navigate this city with my pram than many other people. I think, sadly, you are misrepresenting them. Absolutely. I'm out walking with a buggy every morning and see a lot of Asian workers in our community. In nearly eight years I've only been discomfited by a creepy look once. Once! When a new group arrives they look at me with apprehension for a few days but very quickly are responding to my good morning greetings with smiles and waves at my baby. They move things off the path for me and stop noisy machinery when I go past. It's a nice start to the day. I know a lot of the labourers in our community come from Pakistan so after the awful school massacre I took chocolates out to the regular groups I see on my walk. What they were really happy about was the chance for a few moments to have a chat to my toddler. These men are away from their families for years at a time and don't have easy lives. Try to have a bit of compassion Smartee.

Clearly I'm not destined to have a maid as I wouldn't care who my guests were, I'd tend to my baby if and whenever needed! Since having my first baby nine years ago I don't think I've managed to get through an entire dinner party without having to tend to at least one woken child at some point! Certainly! i wouldnt expect my maid to help cater to parties at all. if i need someone it has to be from the agency for such tasks! the question was merely about a friend (singly person) coming over and offering a glass of water or making a cuppa tea - i dont think i would have an issue to do that at all... i generally would check in my office with anyone (boss or peer) if they would like a cup of tea if im going to make one for myself... this query was really not about refilling drinks or serving food or expecting the maid to be a waitress... if anything i really like my privacy with guests and would not appreciate her to be active there... i just wanted some opinions on how to say it.. thats all! Saggi, I'm confused. The OP is expatoman, is it you with a different username? ETA: Typed slowly, not the only one confused! edited by Daza on 03/02/2015

Dear Daza, that's a really tough answer I really hope the OP doesn't take your advice. The OP is not really moaning about her maid; the only issue seems to be one of fine-tuning her attitude towards timing; otherwise there seems to be no complaint. If this maid is fine albeit a bit weak in the late-night or unexpected-guest department, then why react so strongly? Having any maid that is fine in character and trustworthy and hardworking is really rare these days; if this OP has no issues but for the fact that she can be weak in this department, then I really wouldn't put such tough ideas into her head. I have learned with maids that they might be great in this area and weak in another, but if overall they are hardworking and honest and respectful towards the family, then you are onto a rare winner. My maid has weaknesses with guests and I just overlook it as otherwise she is a real blessing to the family. It's obviously important to the OP or she wouldn't have asked. If I had a change in circumstances and needed our maid to be flexible on her work timings and she couldn't be I would hire someone else. Job circumstances change and employees need to either adapt or find another job - with appropriate, notice, severance pay etc given. At any rate, we don't know the OPs situation, she may well have always expected her maid to be flexible and it's only now becoming an issue. Or she was great for the first couple of months then it all started to go downhill. Or maybe the OP was unclear on her expectations and is trying to rectify things. Whatever the situation, only the OP knows if the issue she has asked about is negotiable or not and if she is willing to overlook it. We all have different expectations. Whilst you choose to overlook a weakness with guests, it might be a crucial part of the job for another family. edited by Daza on 03/02/2015

If you need her to be more flexible with her hours then tell her that. 9.30pm certainly isn't unreasonable if you are giving her time off the next morning. Or a later start that morning if you know it will be a later finish. If she doesn't want to be flexible with her hours you might need to find someone who is willing to be when her contract is up. There are many jobs that you sometimes need to work late to get the job done, it's hardly a unique situation. With regards to the question of what I do when we have guests over for dinner, our maid doesn't work. We are from a culture where maids are not the norm so I'm perfectly happy serving my guests and *gasp* cleaning up afterwards. But we all do things differently and if you want your maid to work in that situation just tell her it's part of her job. She can always choose to find another employer with no evening work when her contract is up. edited by Daza on 03/02/2015 edited by Daza on 03/02/2015

Hi Grittt1 If you struggle with motivation to exercise and haven't done a lot before I'd start with just trying to work extra activity in to your day. Find a time of day that suits to do a brisk walk of at least 20 minutes, building up the distance and time gradually. Take the stairs not the lift. If there is an escalator, walk, don't just stand there. Work out some exercises you can easily do when you are watching TV (if you watch TV). High knees up on the spot, leg raises etc. Something to raise your heart rate and something to work your muscles. Google some ideas, you'll find loads of suggestions. If you are anaemic it could be making you breathless and affecting your stamina. Make sure you are eating plenty of iron rich foods along with foods that aid iron absorbtion. Plenty of protein too.

Hi mama1 I personally wouldn't give antibiotics to a child without them being prescribed them. Did the doctor do a swab to confirm the type of infection? Just asking because there is a tendency here for doctors to needlessly prescribe antibiotics. This webpage is quite informative about throat infections. http://www.nps.org.au/conditions/ear-nose-mouth-and-throat-disorders/ear-nose-and-throat-infections/sore-throat/for-individuals/medicines-and-treatments Your son is very young so if he seems very unwell it's best to get him to a doctor even if it's tricky. I hope they are both better soon.

I don't think you should let the fallout from their marriage break up affect your own marriage. If it were me I would just suck it up, support my husband's wishes and be civil. If you can do this then surely your husband can reciprocate the support and not expect you to be rushing out for mani/pedi and girl's nights with the other woman.
