I sometimes give workers cans of coke, chocolates or packets of biscuits. In summer ice-creams (which obviously isn't relevant now). Not exactly essentials but everyone likes a treat :)

Did you go to a private clinic and your friend a government one? I've been to both for prenatal care, at the private clinic I didn't need to provide documentation and they didn't take blood initially. At the government one I had to provide my passport, visa, marriage certificate and blood on my first visit.

I went last night, found it much better than previous years. The new layout is a vast improvement. It's not a surprise find as such but my children loved the Deception show they have on. I normally moan about having to take my children (who think it is marvelous) but dare I say it, this year I actually enjoyed going.

That sucks Beebers! I'm normally pretty allergic but nothing at the moment. Any chance it could actually be an illness? Been meaning to tell you as well, it's SO worth getting organised and making vanilla extract. Mine is just ready now and it's amazing. Split 10 vanilla pods, put in a glass jar or bottle with 500mls of vodka, in the cupboard for a month, vanilla bonanza. Evidently you can keep topping it up with vodka as you use it too.

Anything goes, there will be people super casual, some dressed to the nines and everything in between. Concerts in the warmer months at Atlantis I normally wear shorts and a top, jeans and a top carrying a wrap in the cooler months. Jumpsuits (short and long) are always pretty popular. I always wear flats as walking or dancing on sand in heels is not much fun. Have fun and get your dancing boots ready, I saw him in AD and had a great night!

I didn't see your previous post but it's good to hear you've checked things out fully. You're right, it might be the best option to have her go home then bring her back under your sponsorship. It could end up being much more straightforward than negotiating with her current employer.

So she is still on a tourist visa and her current employers haven't started the employment visa? If this is the case then as far as I am aware they can't send her back home. She is not under their sponsorship and they aren't responsible for her. Legally, she shouldn't be working or residing in their home on a tourist visa. It sounds like you haven't actually spoken her current employer? You really do need to do this. If you have children (you mentioned 'nanny') then you should never be afraid to ask anything. Ask anything and everything and then some more.

Have you spoken to her employers treva1234? They will have paid a considerable sum for her visa so may well be happy to recoup some of the cost by transferring the visa to you. You could offer to pay them the remaining ten months of her visa. In saying that, most people wouldn't want to terminate someones's employment two months in to a costly visa so I would find out why they are asking her to leave.

I'm so sorry Suzy. Or course you aren't a terrible friend. Your friend understands why you can't be there and you [i'>know[/i'> she understands because if the situation was reversed you would understand too, without criticism or judgement. The friends that we grew up with, that helped to shape us through our formative years, we have a bond that distance and time can't erode. We are in each other hearts and nothing can change that. Your friend doesn't need to have you there to know that she is in your heart and you are in hers.

Sorry to hear this Cherpie. Don't stoop to his level, no-one ever looks good getting in to a slanging match on facebook. I'd either block him and his family from my facebook or stay off it altogether. I think if facebook (or anything else online) is making you feel bad then you should avoid it. Focus on the good stuff in the real world, not the negativity in the virtual one :) edited by Daza on 14/12/2014

I agree that it's important to have a buffer in case things go wrong. We bought our home when prices were high although not at their peak. Despite paying a pretty decent deposit, after the crash we were in negative equity for a time. During this time our bank decided that they weren't making enough money from our contracted interest rate so voided the contract and upped the interest rate - something that would never have been allowed to happen in our home countries and not something we were expecting. Also at this time there were 17 rounds of redundancy at my husbands work so very little job security. It was an extremely stressful time but not nearly as bad as it could have been as we have enough savings in my home country to tide us over for a considerable amount of time with no income. If it hadn't been for this buffer I think I would have been out of my mind with worry. We also hadn't stretched ourselves with the original repayments so were able to afford the increased payments and thankfully my husband did not lose his job. edited by Daza on 13/12/2014

Regardless of the OPs situation, even loaded people don't tend to like losing money on property. If you read my post again, I specifically said 'I'm not saying don't buy'. I'm just giving a different view to yours which is if you can afford to buy why not.

Why not ladymary? Because as an expat, your right to live here is dependent on your employment. If you lose your job and can't find another you have to leave even if you don't want to. For expats there is no state safety net, here it is no job, no money, no help. I know people who were planning on being here for the long haul but lost their job in the recession and had to leave. Renting their house out wouldn't cover the mortgage which they couldn't afford to top up without a job. So they sold at a loss and and all their savings were gone. That is just one example of the many people I know who lost money on homes here. I'm not saying don't buy, I own my home here for which I am very pleased but the decision to buy isn't the no-brainer you are making it out to be. Owning land or a property anywhere is a risk. Sometimes (as in your case) that risk works out but sometimes it doesn't. There is a lot to consider, especially here. It can be an unforgiving place to get in to financial difficulty.

I see property as a long term investment therefore long term projections for Dubai are good. Dubai is a safe haven in a wealthy region offering stability and a sound banking system. Were you here in 2008 ladymary? 'Safe haven' was an often used refrain that year as a reason why Dubai would escape the recession. And yet......

Totally depends on your child but in your situation if my child was happy in their current nursery and it wasn't too inconvenient for me I would keep them where they are for FS1. Moving school twice is a lot of upheaval and I wouldn't do it unless necessary.

What a horrible situation chocfudge. It might be a good idea to give your husband your phone so he can show her husband when he speaks to him. Her husband may well be in denial about it if she is having some mental health issues. Plus if your husband is anything like mine he would find the whole situation mortifying and would probably downplay it. At least pictures would show how bizarre her behaviour is.

Has the school told you the reason for the 70% increase? If it is because they are changing to high quality proper organic suppliers then I wouldn't mind so much but if it simply for the 'honour' of having a famous chef design the menu then I'd getting my sandwich making groove on. I spoke to a few Foremarke children about their lunches recently. They said the food was nice and were particularly enthused about a cherry brownie. I find the whole celebrity chef school lunch trend completely eye roll worthy. It doesn't take Gary Rhodes to work out that most children will enjoy a brownie.

Well then go ask them in jail what happened. Really? How can anyone live here and not understand the laws, you are not immune from the law because you are an expat. The OPs friend obviously does realise it is illegal and she is not immune as she is asking for advice on here. The only foolproof method of avoiding pregnancy is celibacy, do you really expect every unmarried person residing here to be celibate? Contraception is not a guarantee and mistakes can happen, it doesn't always mean someone is ignorant of the law or foolish.

Ladies, I am asking on behalf of someone who is in a situations....she is getting married in a few weeks and is only 2mnths pregnant. I am already married with children, this is not for me. I am trying to help someone so if you have some helpful advice or experience please share otherwise you can keep the lectures to yourself, she has already heard enough of those.......thanks As long as she gets married she should be fine Rosie. The only problem that might arise is if she ends up in hospital with complications before she is married. My friends sought legal advice about their situation and were told it would be ok as long as they got married asap.

All hospitals, government or not will request a copy of your marriage certificate. If you can't provide one, they are legally bound to report you to the police. To deliver at a government hospital you have to register for one first and take an ante-natal package. One of the forms they require is a marriage certificate. You will not be able to register at a government hospital or clinic without one. I have a friends who got married in their home country when about four months pregnant then delivered here. When the discrepency in dates was noticed at the hospital it was reported. The husband had to go before a tribunal and say he was very sorry but they were now married so it wouldn't happen again. He was there with a number of other men in the same situation of all nationalities. As my friends were married before the baby was actually born there were no repercussions.

i was mortified with embarrassment that when they had the royal navy band playing, to kick off the final - not only was it not audible (it wasn't connected to the sound system for whatever technical reason) they didn't even have it on the big screen until a few minutes in. so neither national anthem was audible - and there was even some 'duff duff' music continuing in the background. like i said, the organisers definitely need to re-look at it (i'm talking saturday btw, wasn't there Friday). numbers have been confirmed as down - so hopefully lesson learnt. I was there Thursday/Friday and not Saturday so going on husband's reports from the Saturday! He wasn't impressed. It clashed with a lot of other things maybe that is why numbers were down?

was it the most disappointing, void of atmosphere, EMPTY, non-event ever? i still can't believe the empty stands, the Heineken tent, virtually no taxi queues! the organisers/promoters definitely need to up their game (no pun intended). Not just you! My 7th 7's and the first I've been disappointed. Thursday was busier than previous years but Friday and Saturday quieter. The lack of parade on the Friday was so, so disappointing. My children always love the parade, it's an absolute highlight for them and they always leave tired but on a high. This year with just the teams, a brass band and a couple of unhappy looking camels they were utterly crestfallen. Not worth keeping them up past their bedtime for at all.

Thank you Daza. Europe requires products coming in from the USA to have GMO labeling if there is GMO in the products. I am sure the same can be done here as well. What about products from outside the U.S. or from within the EU itself? My brother is a scientist with a global horticultural chemical company and I'm passionate about organic food. Sadly AED1000 is far from enough. Sometimes, when I do the whole thing at the hairdressers it costs more than that. Talk to him about having access to money equally. If he is adamant that its enough, [b'>let him have a go with AED1000 for one month and see how far he gets[/b'>! It costs 40 AED for my husband to get a haircut! And he doesn't have enough hair left for a blowdry. Men are [strike'>cheap[/strike'> low maintenance. edited by Daza on 24/11/2014

Hi Mara Maybe he's just not ready? Does he want to do it? How old is he? Is he your first child? My oldest child learnt to ride a bike much older than my second child, she just wasn't interested where as my second child was really keen. To be honest, teaching a child to ride a bike really isn't something you need to get a trainer for. As long as they are ready it's pretty straight forward, you just might need to spend a bit of time getting their confidence up.

Parents often pay a fortune for their children to take the bus and a lot of the drivers appear to have gotten their licence from a Weetabix packet, it really is appalling. Are there many parents on here who's children take the bus that have ever followed their child's bus to see how it was driven? Because surely parents can't be aware of how bad the standards can be? Honestly, If I saw a bus driver taking such irresponsible approach to my children's lives I'd want them hung, drawn and quartered. I've complained on several occasions to the RTA and schools about specific buses. edited by Daza on 20/11/2014

Any veg-fruit combination you wanna share? I read it should be 2/3 veg & 1/3 fruit? I try to cut down on the sugar as much as possible. I have a daily smoothie of one beetroot, one cucumber and one lemon with alkalising spices and oil and water. Doesn't taste the best but makes me feel great. You really need to watch out for sugar when juicing or making smoothies. Here's a handy chart or average amounts. It's per 100 grams, not per piece. Just one apple can have over 4 teaspoons of sugar. Fruit can also be quite acidic which can make you feel not so great if you are having too much. [b'>How much sugar does fruit contain?[/b'> Fruits contain fructose, a type of sugar. Fresh fruit have no "added sugar", but as you can see below, their levels of sugar range from 1 teaspoon per 100 grams in cranberries to 4 teaspoons in grapes. *per 100 grams Bananas Bananas contain approximately 3 teaspoons of sugar (fructose). Mangos - 3.2 teaspoons of sugar Bananas - 3 teaspoons of sugar Apples - 2.6 teaspoons of sugar Pineapples - 2.5 teaspoons of sugar Grapes - 4 teaspoons of sugar Lemons - 0.6 teaspoons of sugar Kiwi fruit - 2.3 teaspoons of sugar Apricots - 2.3 teaspoons of sugar Strawberries - 1.3 teaspoons of sugar Raspberries - 1 teaspoon of sugar Blueberries - 1.7 teaspoons of sugar Cranberries - 1 teaspoons of sugar Tomatoes - 0.7 teaspoons of sugar
