dressing rules are unchanged, same applies as for non-ramadan days. only change is the availability of food/drinks and ban on public eating/drinking/smoking. also some shops will be closed in the afternoon and open later in the night instead. malls are usually open until 1am - 2am. There is definitely a different "dress code" during Ramadan, at least during the day. Expats are asked to show a level of respect by dressing appropriately during the day. Sun dresses, shorts, tank tops, are not considered appropriate. If wearing sun dresses or a tank top, a shirt with sleeves over them is OK. After Iftar (or when Muslims break fast) the "dress code" is not required. Over the years dress style during the day has become more relaxed, or should I say some people don't think it necessary to show respect. Not true, what you described goes for the whole year, not only ramadan. Shorts and tank tops are not really considered appropriate in public any time.

it was upsetting that the vast majority of the comments I was seeing leaned towards one persons passing (as opposed to an event that was cataclysmic in comparison). no, it is not about the person passing, it is about the talent that went wasted. extremely sad. I don't think you mean that the way it reads, at least I hope you don't - what about the wasted talent of the young lives killed in Norway? They possibly had great political futures in their own country, just because you didn't know their names doesn't mean they weren't talented. No, you can't compare the two, but for once, I agree with OS, what happened in Norway on Friday will reverberate politically round the world, Amy Winehouse's death does not have the same ramifications and don't get me wrong, I think her death is extremely sad and a waste of a great talent, but she did it to herself. Those poor children on the island did not. you have read it right. amy's talent was unquestionable and tangible. some of those kids may have turned out fantastic talent too, but we do not know, and looking at the statistics, the chances are very tiny. most probably they grow to average people, like all of us on this forum. not that it justifies anything. as i said, noone mentioned the ten thousands who also died on the same day, in cancer, in rape, in abuse and domestic violence, etc, some of those may have been future talents too!! anyway, i am out of this topic. i think we understand eachother.

Called and they cant tell me???? lol then how shall we tell you??? call them again, maybe you get a different (smarter) call center person. Possibly someone has done it before and has a round about figure????? I did it many times. It depends on the distance you travel. Also depends on your fare class (saver, flexible, etc) and the availability. Then if there is availability, it depends on what skywards tier you are as gold tier has priority. Hope it helps. Now call them.

I've had no choice in the 5 years I've been here...perhaps because I work for a bank though! Only one of my colleagues i know could have a different bank account, and that was because he had multiple loans with another bank so he was obliged to keep his salary there when he joined us. I tried to get my salary paid elsewhere (don't like keeping my money/private business in the view of my employer) and was told not possible by my HR team....the only option I had was to transfer the cash out ( which would be at a cost if I were not a staff member). hmm, ask labour ministry.

If you will be paid here, your salary account will most likely be mandated by your employer - whichever bank they use to process salaries. . not true, employers cannot mandate such!! they usually offer to use the same bank because 1. their representative will come to the office , no need to visit the branch 2. you get the salary sooner, transfering to other bank takes a day or two longer. But still, you have your free choice of banks, no need or obligation to go with the company's bank.

nooo!! no need for agent. just sign with landlord direct. landlord should buy "contract" forms (blue, A4 size, cost 1 AED/sheet) from any "Typing" shops, you both sign, get two witness, then landlord should register it with rera. all cost by landlord, but if you want you can also spend the 2 AEd on the forms, haha. agencies are desperate for money as they do not have enough business. ouch. <em>edited by dentro on 25/07/2011</em>

Mentioning "embassy" and "helpful" in the same sentence is just plain ironic!!! LOL Otherwise I do not think the embassy does this... your residency is proven by your residency visa in your passport....if not enough then UAE Immigration can give a certificate...

The worlds gone mad !!!! Not a word on here about the 80 odd teenagers who were murdered in Norway but people are mourning the death of a druggie, who ironically, now only in death has become a role model. Only because the Norway thing is too horrible to even speak about. Norway is terrible because all those who died, their death was beyond their control. Our life goes on. Amy is terrible because the world has lost 20 years of good music that only she could have produced. Our life goes on, but will differ. But all in all, it is silly to compare different news items. Most probably on the same day ten thousands of other people died, in cancer, in domestic violence, in rape, in child abuse, in war, etc, and one does not outshine the other. On a personal level, I am touched by Amy's death, dot.

Thank u dentro. I'm just focusing on marketing but trying admin too, TBH I'm not really keen on admin jobs, but if it's for a well known company, I see it as a way to start and develop my career once in the company. As for trying through people, I would love to but dont have a big network admin is a start of career in admin field. unless you want that. it is not a start of a marketing career.( neither a medical career, nor an engineering career , etc) let me put it that way: if the interviewer sees an engineer who wants either an admin job or an engineering job, and have an other candidate, who clearly wants an engineering job, which one appears more passionate about engineering and serious and self determined? now change engineering to marketing and read again... good luck edited by dentro on 07/07/2011 and then change "engineering" to admin... whoever wants a good office manager, wants a dedicated person... <em>edited by dentro on 07/07/2011</em>

Pepito, in both admin and marketing you compete with people who are happy with lower salary / childless hence less expense + more time. My advices: 1. Focus on marketing not on admin. Find a marketing company, more reputable the better. If you stuck with years of admin and call center in your cv you will never get a marketing job, while you can always go to admin after marketing. 2. Take the next job even if costs are barely covered. The longer gap you have the more difficult it is. If the interviewer feels there were others who have chosen not to take you (even if you say you refused, they wont believe), then maybe something is "wrong" with you, even if he did not notice any. You know, they always want people who are "wanted" by others, not the ones being around jobless. 3. Try through people, if you get a personal recommendation to a job your chances to be selected are 100x higher. Good luck

Can someone explain me the Health Card concept. The one you get the day when they do the medical test for residency visa. I am confused, some say all hospitals are half priced with it, some say only iranian hospital , rashid and al wasl takes it but those are free with it. It is confusing, has someone have first hand experience? Which hospitals? And if there is discounted/ free everything with it, what is the Private Medical Insurance for? I mean, I understand that covers other countries, wider range of preventative care, extras, but is that really that essential, or can someone pretty much survive well on the standard government Health Card with no major financial wound when ill?

i would not worry, i ravel a lot for business without any luggage just a handbag and was never questioned about lack of luggage at any of the terminals. the general rule is that they can check through luggage all the way if the flights are within 24 hours. if the stopover is longer they would not check in the luggage only for the first leg. once it is checked in all the way, it is actually very difficult to reclaim at the stopover city, as it is automatically routed to the next flight and they have to get someone to manually find it. they do not do it. if your mom misses her second flight, her luggage will show checked in but she will not, so they will delay the flight a bit (with everyone on board) and find her bag and remove. so yes, you can see her, enjoy!!!

I do not think it is worth to bother with blogs like this. He came to Dubai for one or two days, went to Dubai Mall, was not smart enough to look for the connecting bus but walked through emaar boulevard and the car park, could not find a cheap camera he wanted to buy, and now he is taking it all on Dubai.

Agree with others I am surprised you were focused so much on your hurt feelings rather than finding out what and why he really does. You can stop him in whatever he is doing as it does sound fishy. When he said he works for RTA you could have asked what is he exactly doing and why. Ask for ID. Call RTA from your mobile right there. etc. I am quite sure he is not RTA so by questioning him about his "job" you can confront him quickly. I do not think that your husband being there helps any ways. What I would do not even talking to him next time just take a few good zoomed photos of his face from a distance and go to police and report. If you can see which is his car and get the number plate even better. Also, if he is there so often the petrol station people may know him. This is getting very exciting, please keep us posted Mrs Sherlock Holmes!!

to be honest we do not know the full story. maybe she already sent it back quietly once, or was first served the wrong dish, or kept waited for an hour, who knows, she may have been just generally ****** off. i am saying that because i am always very careful with sending food back (I know how easy is to spit on my food behind the kitchen wall), asking them nicely to fry it a bit more if possible, but I had it once or twice and not even in Dubai that I bursted out shouting, after several attempts of getting their attention on my food...

I am sure I could not have just sit and stay silent and do nothing. I would have for sure asked "can i help you ?? " and "why are you talking about my personal data?". they cannot do anything harmful to you there as those waiting rooms have glass walls and anyone can see it, plus even if not, if you scream many would come! So you had nothing to lose just to gain some more detailed information about this weird case. But you know, if you did nothing i do not think there is anything more to be done now. Try the machine, just out of curiosity. Maybe you have dropped your license or some paper that you still have not recognized and missing and they had the data from that? Maybe they did want to buy your car but did not realize the owner was you? If nothing happens in a few days , just forget. If something happens, you know who the suspicious men were to be reported!! Have a glass and milk, forget it and dream something nice!

One more for JimWillFixIt, they were great. 1. the guys were well groomed, not stinky!!!! 2. the guys had common sense and could advise me on possible ways and best ways to fix my items 3. they had their own tools and fixing consumables, no "need to come back tomorrow" or "do you have a hammer" or "please buy some washers". I just hope they do not get self satisfied with our praises and relax their standards!! Happened to so many who were praised on EW and got hence overloaded with orders.
