I once had super bad experience with one of their eye doctors in dubai mall. So bad that I actually told the nurse that he was the worse doctor ever and she kinda agreed and suggested that I talk to the manager in duty. I was taken to her room. She listened to me and even noted down things and then asked if she can offer an other appointment for free with an other eye doctor (the head of the department), which I accepted. Not sure if it was followed up or if he is still there.

I agree with others, it is not gender discrimination. I have been working here for over a decade, and can assure you I have experienced or heard less gender discrimination here than in Europe. The is plenty of IT people around, supply is larger than demand. Companies only need 1 maybe 2 IT persons (except IT companies..). Keep applying, and make sure the position is a good fit with your background. Finding a job with no local experience is always difficult. But if you are really good in what you do, you will succeed here.

Do you mean the black face mask kind of thing? It is called "Niqab" and you can buy in every shop that sell abayas (the long black dress). They also have the golden face mask, which is traditional emarati, but only the elderly wear it. I would not call them "funny", but certainly unusual if you have not seen them before. edited by dentro on 01/02/2015

We went to Wellington International for our daughter's assessment today - both of us in our own cars. We parked at 9:00 on the deserted road in front of the school - there is enough space provided beyond the yellow lines and there were a line of cars parked. 1.5 hours later, we get SMSes that both cars have been parked for illegal parking!! There are no no parking signs or even signs from the school where we are supposed to be parking. Its all just a racket. Unfortunately this is indeed illegal parking.

It depends on both the passport nationality and the license issuer country, it is a combination of the two. I have the RTA mobile app on my iPhone that has a "license exchange" section. I have just inputed Sweden and UK license and it says it can be exchanged. (For example Indian passport with UK license, cannot be replaced). Swedishgirl, in my opinion the driving test is a torture in every country. And it seems anyways that you have no choices but to do it here, as you have limited time and long wait list there. Look at it from the bright side, maybe the change of scene and change of instructor will calm you and help to complete the test. Good luck.

Highly recommend Hertz, been using them most of 4 years here. They will 1. Never charge you for fake speeding tickets that you supposedly got on a day you were out of the country (small time companies here have done this to me) 2. Pick up your car, wherever you are in the Emirates, and switch it out within a half day's notice if you call and say your fluids are low 3. Come jump a dead battery within 40 minutes if you are stuck..... 3.5 Come back an hour later if it won't start again, and install a brand new battery 4. Always give you a fresh, clean, and new car Prices may not be the lowest but they are competitive. But a new car should not need jumpstart! :)

It is very normal that the tenant pays for small repairs under 1000. The 500 was a good deal, you should not let it go. To be honest, there aren't many things anyway, and you do not want long correspondence for every lightbulb. The major items are AC leaks or water heater, but those are above 1000 anyways. Relax, no one wants to rip you off.

If you signed a limited labor contract, the company can ask you for a compensation of up to 3 month of your monthly salary. Visa's can be transferred only within free zones which doesn't apply in your case. She is still in probation period. Nothing will happen.

Just to reiterate why I love banking with Noor. I just made a purchase over the internet for some denim on a US website here at 10pm local time. Cost 300 dhs, They called my mobile 5 minutes after the purchase to confirm that I myself made the purchase. I find this invaluable! I am afraid every bank does that. Enbd and citi do it for sure.

I recommend using a big local bank. The biggest plus is they have branches everywhere ( especially emirates nbd), whereas international ones have only 1 or very few. The other interesting benefit is while international banks kept mortgage rates high during the crisis times, local banks had much better rates. Local banks seem less greedy to me! And btw, international ones are also "local", having an hsbc account here would not be treated differently than any other account, when you walk into an hsbc branch elsewhere on earth. I recommend emirates nbd.

Collecting toilet paper with pee, menstrual blood, poo over into a separate trash can next to the toilet is the most disgusting, unhygienic and harmful practice I have ever seen. It stays there all day, attracting flies, emitting smell, contaminating the wall, the bin, even the seat in contact. Bacteria live there happily. Many offices enforce this to their staff, sadly, forcing the cleaner to deal with the mountain of dangerous waste. In reality, toilet paper cause no harm to any toilet in dubai. The wire mesh myth is untrue. Such mesh would stop dense type poo too, and then what is the toilet for, if it does not take poo... Toilet paper dissolves in water and causes no problem. Strong wet wipes, napkins, plastic packaging, nappies, empty water bottles, random non-dissolving waste do cause problem, of course. I am unsure from where this disgusting practice originates from. Daily chore of collecting and disposing soiled loo paper is more of a burden than potentially pumping the toilet once in 5 years or so ( I never needed to do for any of my toilets, I do not even have a pump). My bet is it dates back to the loos with pit underneath, that needed to be manually emptied. Luckily, loo technology moved on, so should we! edited by dentro on 16/01/2015

There are lots of companies, but generally they would not sponsor a maid who would work for you full time. If Howdra is doing this, the 3500 is actually a very good rate, you would not be able to do it cheaper yourself. Salary 1500/month min + if not living in your home 800 aed accommodation allowance monthly. Additionally visa processing around 10,000 for a year. Additionally flight ticket 2500 yearly, medical insurance 1000 for a year.

Good that you called. However, I regret to say that you may have already lowered your own chances. I would have gone for the interview even if I looked like a mess, and would have told them in person that I really tried to attend but I feel so unwell, I would like to come back later. That would be effort that they appreciate. Instead, you did not turn up and emailed only, they may think that you had an other interview or anything. Nevertheless, if it is a big company, then it is very likely that the person arranging the interview is not the person who carries out the interview or makes the decision, in which case there is still chance. Do apologize in any case. similarly, if you have a phone interview and you are driving for example, it is best to stop the car at the shoulder and talk to them, rather than asking them to call back, which may turn them away.

Gotta agree on not recommending Axa... They used to be fantastic, but we are very likely to change as we had too many disappointment with them. Too many rejections, sudden changes to rules, unexpected black listing of otherwise perfectly professional clinics.

Anyone knows if there will be led light show in the evenings at burj khalifa, similar to the new year one? I would imagine if they took the effort fixing up those led lights one by one, they would want to use them every night for a while, say January, but today I asked in the mall at the information, and they could not tell. (Lol, he kept repeating "ma'am, there will be no more fireworks, it was only for New Year's eve", like I was some idiot who expected the fireworks every night...)

DT, most of us still have property and family in the uk, hence also addresses. Email address works too. But if I do not drive on it in the uk, I will not have fines, so they won't mail me anything. I will drive on it in other countries, where the tickets will be sent to the rental agency, who will charge it on my credit card. Anyways, I accept this is the regulation. Regulations are not always fully logical...

Thank you, interesting information! I do not keep a car in the uk any more, so would not use it there, but used it in other countries to rent cars. I always imagined that the uk one would be more widely accepted than the UAE one, for example in other European countries. Have to admit I have not even tried renting cars with the UAE one, except in qatar. I know I could get the international one, but that is only valid for a year, quite a hassle. It is a bummer that I cannot extend it...

you cannot lift the ban, if you employ her under domestic workers visa. However, it is unlikely that she will be banned if she completed her contract, and exited the country. After she left you can check with immigration is she was banned. They will not automatically ban her as she finished the contract, only if the employer specifically requests this and pays extra for it. It is unlikely, but of course they would tell this to the girls so they do not start thinking to make the jump.

We had two photo shoots with them. The first one was amazing, we loved the pictures, and bought 5 extras on top of the included one. That was three years ago. Then again, this summer we had a second session. To be honest, it was below our expectations. The pictures were not as amazing this time. We only took the free one, nothing more. That said, I would have no hesitations trying them for third time.

I would trust stangers as is do couch surfing too. However, the problem I see is the logistics. For sitters living in dubai, there is no assurance that there will be a continuous supply of flats with pets, so they still need to find a place to live and pay rent. Once that is sorted out, why would they move somewhere else? For sitters who are travelers, it could be challenging to find exact matches with your and their travel itineraries. Especially considering that people want to leave dubai in July - August the most, and that period is nowhere attractive to visitors coming here. Hence, if you operate such a service, it will be very difficult to keep it reliable, by guaranteeing that you will have sitters available any time and in sufficient amount. If you just want it for yourself rather than a service, use the couch surfer websites and specify that a pet will need to be looked after in exchange to the free accommodation.

I am really happy with the police here and proud that they solved this case with so little information so quickly. I cannot understand this case though. They had an one hour argument in the toilet, and mall security was present. How did that escalate to murder and the murderer being able to flee? Also, what was her motivation? Did they know each other before? If not, why the long argument? If yes, why did they meet in a toilet? What about the home made bomb, how did she imagine it to go off? Who would ignite it? This whole case is weird.

I think it needs a tiny bit of maturity to understand that a guy can be and is professional when he is doing his job. He has seen millions of hands if he is a manicurist, and would not have an erection / attempt rape just because he sees yet an other pair of hands. Same applies to male massage therapists. Or female nurses. Or female dentists with male patients. I think only young teenage girls would find these situations worth giggling or considering.

It is always greener at the neighbor's grass and we usually do not appreciate things until they are over... We lived in 7 different countries before dubai... Dubai is the best place.
