Ask the car dealer where his car was bought from. It is useful if the instruction is specific to the car brand he actually drives.

Have not seen a male manicurist but I would not have any problems, if he is good at it. I had male massage therapists many times. In my country massage is more like a physiotherapy medical thing than wellness, and most therapists are male and very very good in relaxing muscles and dissolving knots.

I had punctured tyre 3 times over the years. Each time i started changing the tyre myself but very soon stopped someone to help. Once it was an Italian guy, twice emaratis. I am not a beauty queen by any measures. None of them accepted anything in exchange. I also got stuck in the sand many times and always got helped. Once I ran out of petrol and within five minutes someone stopped (emarati again) and dropped me at the nearest petrol station. I must note that I also stop and help people (or at least ask if I can help, as they rarely want help from women). It is a karma thing, maybe if you help more often you get helped more often.

Socotra is not a child friendly place. It is basically camping and hiking without electricity and proper bath. Still the most beautiful place I have ever been. Would not go right now as connecting flights are frequently cancelled and sanaa is not safe at all.

Leave the bear at home. No pictures. Just write one line to the diary: "My host family went out somewhere, but they have completely forgotten me! I spent the weekend alone, in a dark corner of the kid's room. They do not even have a camera! Horrible experience, I will never visit them again!" I hope you will not get it anymore!

I believe most charities would only accept brand new items due to hygiene regulations. But you may try to find one that collects for ghaza. Also you could ask secretaries and laborers at your workplace if they need it for their children or their friend's children.

"My Dear" when used in a patronising way Could not agree more!!!! I also used to hate when HR talks about people as "employees". I am not sure what gets me in it, I feel it to be objectifying and humiliating. But I got used to it over the years. Even worse when local labor law and certain company-to-company contracts refer to employees (even with masters degree) as "servants".

I guess it is one of the classic arguments, like "before or after breakfast tooth brushing" or "front or rear side toilet roll placement". I park to a 90 degree spot front first. I have a high wheel base 4x4 so curbs are not an issue for me. I only reverse park if I must load something from the back. Very rarely. I never get frustrated when others reverse park, even if with big 4x4s or even if they make 10 maneuvers to do it. I just think they are beginners and I was also a beginner once. Mind you, when there is enough space, I drive through, and do not wait until they are perfectly parked. I very rarely get frustrated on other people's driving skills. It is just not worth. I have more important issues in life, and bigger worries. I really have no extra brain cells to be frustrated on tiny things like their parking skills. I do not use the emergency lights in fog but do use them when at an accident we suddenly decrese the speed and the car behind me would not expect it. Drive safe.

Some companies do it this way, some others do not. Your expectations are not only based on your (subjective) experience but also your life conditions (family, parents to support back home, kids school fees, size of apartment, medical condition or pricy hobby, etc). If say you expect 20k but the company cannot pay more than 12k, it would be a great waste of both parties' time to held an interview. Even if they state they pay 12k and you decide to compromise and accept it, you would not be happy with this as it could seriously impact your life and you would try to leave them soon. However, their expectations are purely professional, and they cannot pay you more just because your living costs are higher. It is not common to ask this right away, but not unprecedented. Just state the amount on which you agree to work with them; or state an amount on which you are happy to work along with your minimum, stating you can accept the minimum for the first 2-3-6 months (chose), but eventually your aim is the higher one. (Such promise shall be in writing otherwise they may not increase).

Ohhoho, "sell" them the password! Make them do a chore for you for it! Cleaning your terrace, washing your car, bringing your grocery up from the car, or if nothing else, cleaning the garbage chute room, or find 10 workers and give them a fanta each. To earn the password! Of course you will change it in an hour or two. But chances are high they would change their mind about wanting your password if they hear that there is a price! edited by dentro on 21/10/2014

One of my doctors used to work there. He is a middle aged Arabic man. He was very bitter about that hospital and said he only stayed a bit as they owed him salaries. We are not friends by any means, the conversation took place in the treatment room after I asked how long he lived in dubai. I believe to start complaining on your ex employers to a random patient means he was really hurt by them.

I have to give an update because it all turned out well and I am happy with the phone I got! So yesterday I tried it on wifi only, as I had no nano sim card. But today I went and got it cut down to nano. When I opened the new iphone6, it had a Verizon SIM card in! That is why it tried to get activated. It must have been packaged for Verizon. When I removed that and put my local sim in, the error message never came back, it works perfect, has FaceTime, all great. Thank you again for the recommendation.

Thank you for your recommendations! I checked out jadopado and ordered an iphone6, and it was collected this afternoon! I was very happy!! Now I am sitting here with it and half-happy half-worried, as it does not seem to be network independent! It pops up a message every 5 minutes telling me that the phone could not be activated and recommending me to contact my carrier at 1800.... American phone number. Ehh!!! I would call jadopado but I gotta wait until Saturday morning....

In my experience many who look for "part time", does not really mean part time, but mean "flexible time with reduced hours". Many do not understand that work gotta be done when the business needs it rather than when she has a bit of free time. This may discourage companies from keep on trying, especially if coupled with the visa-work permit application and cancellation hassle.

When I came to dubai, which was many many years ago, there was a strong expat community and I got a warm welcome. I was actually explained, during my very first week, by not one, but at least a dozen people, about the "weird peculiars" of dubai life. The seasonal switch of water taps was definitely mentioned, among other things, like no worries leaving the villa main door unlocked so laundry can be delivered or buy a tent ASAP to enjoy desert camping. I really miss those days. The people coming these days are only welcomed by the hr assistant, who tells them how to fill the time sheet.

Regrettably, I am unable to name on this forum the one I had the bad experience with! (in fact, probably could not name him publicly anywhere here in the UAE in a negative light) edited by mum2girls on 11/10/2014 edited by mum2girls on 11/10/2014 Sorry that you feel that way. I thought it would help other possible victims if they knew your experience. I am sure that the clinic management would like to know your feedback too (unless he is the owner...) Anyways, hope you find a better one! As in every profession, having a degree certificate does not mean that the person is great at his trade!

New to dubai? It is in Fujairah, a good snorkeling spot. A tiny island shaped like sleeping snoopy dog in easy swimming distance from the coast. You gotta drive to Sandy Beach Motel, and either stay there or pay for the daily ticket (last season was 75aed) to get in. The rooms in sandy are ok but not beautiful, if you need something nicer stay in the le meridien near to it, you can still attempt to swim from there if you are a good swimmer, or pay for the motorboat to take you. We usually just drive in the morning and come back in the evening, do not stay over, but you may combine it with a dhow trip from Dibba, in which case it is better to stay. There is a dive center in sandy beach and you can also rent scuba gear. Enjoy.

You make it sound like you are a victim, a puppet who was played with, but according to what you said, that company is actually quite nice to you. A sales coordination position has much more perspective in the future than an admin assistant role. Nevertheless, you could have refused it outright. Now you made them believe that you accepted it, and they count on you for resource planning as sales coordinator. I see absolutely no case for compensation, unless the company seeks compensation from you for their wasted costs, such as visa fees and training efforts for a new field. (No worries, labour law does not allow them to deduct these, but to be honest, it is loss for them) Hi Dentro, May be you right but if your were in my shoes, you would also say that I am a victim. I have been completely used. This issue was raised 5 months back, and they shifted me now. Why? Because my HR was on leave and I was handling everything single handedly. Why they did not shifted me because they had a requirement. Now when she is back to I am not needed. Although it was an Admin Assistant designation, I was doing more of HR and I was acting as a PA also. Sales co-ordination might be good, but its not for me. Specially if its on the technical side and its all about what I wish to do. I was focusing on the HR side of my career. This sudden change is not acceptable. Well... This again proves that your company is nice to people. They let the original hr person to took her job back after her leave. How would you feel if you had a job you liked, and went on long leave, and being told on your planned return "sorry, your substitute is actually pretty good in this job, we will just keep her, goodbye". To be honest, no offense, but I do not find your thinking to be professionally matured enough to be in hr. It may be useful if you try to understand the situation from the aspect of the company and other employees, not only from your angle.

I did see her and it was good. Up: good show, good voice, she made the effort. Dancers, costumes spectacular. I loved her wigs, I want them all. Acoustics was also good, and people selling water and collecting trash helped to survive the heat. Parking was easy, getting in and out was tolerable. Down: like other performers, she did not understand her audience either. Saying "shukran", broken Arabic sentences and things like "we have different religions, but..." is unnecessary for an audience consisting of mostly expats. I have seen only 1 girl with hijab. There were some Arab looking teenagers, but mostly it was western expats. Brits and Russians. Similarly, saying "what a beautiful country" or wearing "I love UAE" shirt looks fake after spending only 24 hours here, plus would not trigger too much national pride in the audience. There can be a balance found with respecting limits without trying to fake enthusiasm. Also, she had speeches on desperate crying whining voice about how much she tried getting a permission and by the way she wishes us more freedom. Well, I know that her definition of freedom include open gay scheme and dope which are not encouraged here, but otherwise it is a very free place, that she does not understand at all. For example, not being forced to hand over half of your salary to your government (tax) is a very very good thing. It was really too hot and humid and the late start did not help. There was a female dj in a weird Snow White like costume who introduced herself as lady gaga's best friend and played music for 45 mins. That part was a real torture, her music was boring and empty. All in all, the gaga songs were great and well performed. I am glad we went.

Unscrew the hinge and screw it back 5 cm lower - install a new one 5 cm lower. Call a carpenter if you do not have the tools or the confidence for it. Won't cost much and it is better to keep good relationship with the landlord than to argue / bother them for 50 aed.

Never happened to me but for sure I would say to her "you have to wait until I finish". Actually it happened to me just two days ago at the airport that at the baggage screen the person in front of me was quite slow with his million bags, and a saudi man behind me started pushing forward and placing his bag. I told him "this is a queue, I am also waiting". He said "sorry" and pulled back behind me.

Hazel is great and talented but she leaves the biggest mess. Hair absolutely everywhere. To make it more painful she giggles "oh I would help cleaning but I gotta run". Only go with her if you live in a villa and can do this in the garden. Also she would not help much with washing your hair, which is a bit awkward. And you pay salon prices for all this. The end result is good though, and that's important.

Try regular cheap umbrellas. Daiso has those too! You could buy white ones and even attach some lace or other decoration to the edge.
