Would be great if safety pins for headscarves and headbands underneath that prevent sliding and opening could also be mandatory at these workplaces, so the women would not need to adjust their headdress every 2 mins. This would increase work efficiency by 50%. edited by dentro on 22/06/2013

HSBC's "global bank local branch" advertisements are really misleading and untrue. The country operations have nothing to do with each other, having an HSBC account here or an emirates bank account will make no difference when trying to open with Hsbc in the uk.

Actually I think landlord's passport is not required, but I cannot remember for sure, hence did not want to say anything. I always take all documents I have, as they keep changing the requirements. Ejaris can be done both by the ll or the tenant, obviously landlords prefer not to do as it is extra hassle. Title deed - many landlords do not have it, as they have to pay 2% of the sales price as land department fee. They only really need the title deed when they sell the apartment, so they procrastinate it. As government realized this "gap", now they require title deeds for a wider range of other stuff. However, for ejaris what they really need to input into the computer system is the plot number, which is not only written on the title deed, but also on the affection plan. Landlords usually do not have the affection plan, but you may inquire the plot number from the developer of the building. It is enough if given over the phone. This is how I did my ejari, as my landlord had no title deed either. edited by dentro on 22/06/2013

Also, practice it home before you travel, it is not as easy as it seems, as your body is not used to let it go while standing and also you need to get the angle right. edited by dentro on 20/06/2013

Just order one online and shop & ship. For example from here: http://www.go-girl.com/ or http://www.shewee.ca/ There are also disposable paper ones which may seem less of a hassle when you travel. i have not used these but googled some: http://www.magic-cone.com/ or http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000R8YAH4 etc edited by dentro on 20/06/2013

But Suzie; but very first world problem.... "can't change the dates as they clash with another holiday"..... :D edited by MrsPineapple on 19/06/2013 Exactly my thoughts... Cancellations may happen, it does not matter when you booked. You could be at the airport and they can cancel the flight. If you have travel insurance, that will pay you some money. If you are on the tight side with money, best if you alter your dates so you still fly with fly dubai. If you cannot alter the date as it is clashing with other holiday, then maybe buy a new ticket and do not waste effort on being angry about budget airlines being budget airlines, with all its side effects? I am actually pretty happy with flydubai, never had such cancellation, and what sets them above other budget airlines is that they actually use brand new aircraft rather than 50 year old ones like the European ones. Also, their crew is actually very nice, not treating you like a piece of luggage than the crew of other such airlines...also, they let me board with a bit of extra luggage multiple times, not wanting to force me to pay penalty on everything. All in all, I really like them.

Title deed from the landlord. He must have it if he owns the premises, hence it should be attached to the rental contract. But if not, email him, he can scan and send. Trade license - only if you are a company, or the landlord is a company. You do not need to go to land department, it can be done at any post office, or tasheel centers or even at immigration or other official places. Takes 5 minutes.

Haha, I was just thinking about this thread today while in Satwa: What's the price of this? - 35 AED What if I buy two, what's the best price you can do? - I'll give them to you for 75 AED Um, that's not really a very attractive offer! :D You would think it is only Satwa! I bought some underwear recently in American Eagle dubai mall, they are priced 30 to 50 aed each, but they have an offer to buy 7 for 130 aed. I selected 8 pieces: - I get these, I know that your offer is for 7, but I pay one separately. So I will pay 160. She rings the items. - ma'am, it will be 180. -why not 160? -it is 130 for seven, and 50 extra for this one. -can you make these the 7, and this one for 30 the extra? - sorry ma'am, company policy, the most expensive item should be extra. -ok, can I then just buy these 7 first, and then buy the 30 aed panty completely separately? Just pretend I am two customers? -yes ma'am, you can do that. Brainless managers???

Just rang to book in for a chemical peel, after a special was offered by a well known clinic. Me: Does the doctor do it or is it a technican? Receptionist: No its a therapist Me: Ok, can I book in for Thursday R: No the doctor isnt here Me: I didnt think the doctor did it? R: No the doctor doesnt, its the therapist Me: so why do I need to book an appointment when the doctor is there? R: because the therapist does it? Me: (knowing this would go round in circles for a while) ok, can I book when the doctor is there then. R: No, the doctor doesnt do it Me: ok, when is the next appointment? R: we dont have one on Thursday Me: ok, can I make an appointment I dont care when just make the appointment R: but the doctor doesnt do it. Me: sigh Eventually got an appointment book. Usually there is a short consultation with the doctor, after which the therapist does the treatment itself. That may explain.

Maid left a month ago, I gave her a weeks pay plus a bit extra as a bonus, she started with a new employer (I found her the job here on EW). She has worked 3 weeks with the new 'madam'. so basically she has been covered for the month, seamless transition... Today I get a call from the new madam saying that the maid has stated I didn't pay her anything for the first week of the month when she worked for me. Just shows you doesn't it... So glad to be rid...... "glad to be rid" ? very nice of you to offer her to other EW members then.... I believe cushion was not unhappy with her, hence the bonus. She certainly did not expect her to take the opportunity to backstab.

I replaced quite a few locks myself. You just unscrew it from the side, slide out, take with you to the shop / measure and take pictures, buy a new one, slide in, screw back. Takes a few minutes. Unfortunately I am not in the ranches so cannot tell you what type is that lock exactly.

My sister has serious cat allergy. She was always advised to stay away from cats. It can be dangerous. Once she visited a friend's parents and felt itchy and sneezy over dinner, so asked about cats. They said their cat was always outside, no worries. She kept feeling itchy, had rash, runny nose, scratchy throat, tears. She woke in the middle of the night with difficulties with breathing, they needed to call the ambulance. Turned out the cat used to be allowed to that room... Please find somewhere else to stay. edited by dentro on 24/05/2013

Unfortunately district cooling is super expensive. They charge consumption charge, which depends on your usage and only 100-200 aed, and they charge capacity charge, which could be 400-800 a month ( charged quarterly) and you cannot get out of it. If you lived in a dewa building before, that is way much cheaper for ac than palm district cooling, empower or such. However, who pays the ac fee - depends on your contract. Could be the landlord or the tenant, as per your agreement. They cannot charge you for last year if it was not in the contract. For next year, if you agree to pay, he must forward you the bills every month.

Yes you can do this through an agency. Usually they charge 35 aed an hour. This ends up for the two days almost as much as the full time salary you would pay, but hey, consider the following: no visa expenses, no flight expense, no hassle with papers, no food allowance or accommodation by you, if you do not get along you can easily ask the agency to send other, you will get a substitute if she is on leave or sick, etc. all in all, still good deal.

Thanks ladies. I am looking for riding classes for myself. I have never learnt to ride before ( however tried here and there, so I know I will like it). Therefore I would like a school that has: - good trainers who explain and understand, not just stand there smiling - as less children as possible, adult audience - not very far so I can drive after work or in the weekend without major pain - well kept horses, so I do not end up feeling terrible for their circumstances So, where shall I go? :)

If financially you can do it and have accommodation covered in both places I can't see why not. Dubai I think has much more to offer in terms of entertainment/restaurants and shopping than Muscat does. However muscat offers some things that dubai cannot... Great nature hikes for the weekend, friendly Omani people, cheaper cost of living, etc. edited by dentro on 24/04/2013

Normally I wouldnt react but as mentioned before we all know the building standards here are very poor. Thats the only thing I am worried about. Dont want my roof collapsing on me. You would be very surprised about the quality of engineering and construction here, in a good way. The fact that your mirror is fixed up a little askew and light switches do not perfectly align does not mean that the primary concrete structure does not account for seismic. The municipality has actually very strict engineering requirements and reviews before giving permit to build.

Most of us have these things as camping in the desert or driving out for barbecue and watching the stars are popular activities here. It may be less hassle to get your own gear, they all sell at Carrefour or geant at very reasonable prices, 30-50 dirham per item for chair, table, cool box. A cool box is handy even for the beach, or just to keep your deep frost groceries in while you drive home during summertime.

I have not seen a single kid there, I am not sure if they would allow any... I have only seen really drunk people there, especially the apron views section, so it is not the most appropriate for children, unless you go home very early, but then you miss the race and the concert and show afterwards, which is pretty cool and definitely a highlight.

I never questioned the sadness of losing a beloved toy. I am questioning your assumption that someone took it on purpose, as you said "stole it". It was most probably picked up by an other kid, and dropped 300 meters away, when his parents noticed. All the best, and believe me, the world is not as sad and disappointing as you perceive. As they say, happiness is a choice.

If you live in a villa, you can use the cold tap as hot water tap and the hot tap ( with turned off water heater) as cold tap during the summer, as the water in your boiler will cool down by the time you use it. (Not sure about newer built villas... But works for Jumeirah/ satwa/ etc)
