Hi Derian, How old is he? Is it just for the 1 week? Hi Timtam, he is 7 years old. Yes - it would be for one week initially as we are going home for the summer the week after but should it work well, I would consider the person on a permanent basis when we return after the summer. He can read but he had grommets and loss of hearing in 2010/11 so he went into Year 2 under the desired level. He is starting year 3 in September and I need to get his level ( and interest) up. TIA

That really doesn't seem fair. Tenants have paid rent to their landlords in advance so they should not be penalised for their landlords actions.

If you didn't complete your 3 year contract, the Labour Department has probably placed an automatic ban on you. You will need to go and see them in person to get it lifted. You might need a form of NOC from your previous employer ( stating that they let you go freely without placing a ban) to get them to be lenient on you. Good luck edited by derien on 12/06/2012

It is quite amusing though.. I love the way they annonce new legislation or criteria for this that and the other wihtout actually thinking through the implications, logistics. The they backtrack. That defines bureaucracy in the UAE

DIFC visa renewals have started applying this new rule. Our employees are furious I really don't see how they can be furious.......... Everyone who is law abiding will have their tenancy agreement wont they? Yes - but before we can renew their visa, they have to submit their tenancy agreement to Ejari for attestation, which costs time and money. Other stupidity is that new employees must have a visa before they can apply for a bank account. How can you rent a house here and obtain the tenancy agreement without a bank account since you need the visa?????????? edited by derien on 11/06/2012

I'm shocked that she got away with something so provacative (especially in a Muslim-majority country such as Turkey). If it was a man who pulled out his privates in public, he would be arrested and charged with public indecency no matter where he was. *vomit* ...b00bies sell, men's privates don't sell ;) Turkey is secular and not that conservative, escpecially Istanbul. Less conservative than some Christian countries honestly. Who cares?

Although this is something that happens to ordinary parents - it seems odd that this happened to someone who is a professionally bodyguraded Prime Minister. Seems lax on the part of the Prime Minister's bodyguards not to have a system for checking everyone is in the cars. Given that the Prime Minister's kids are potential targets for abduction she could have been long gone before they even realised that she was missing. More than excellent point.

There is nothing she can do. It has happened to me before when I was much younger. My husband and I stayed in a hotel. I took my rings off and put them on the bedside table and forgot them the next morning. We had already checked out and were on our way back by the time I realised. I called the hotel but the room had been cleaned and they were gone. I am sure it was the chamber maid that took them but no proof! I always like to think that the person who finds someone's jewelry and doesn't make an effort to return it is cursed in some way.

I'm in the process of setting that up although with our maintainance as I want the compound manager to be on the hook here, rather than telling me that we are using the water (despite spreadsheets that of 4 hourly meter readings that show how we are using water while we are asleep or out of the house!!). I have been nothing if not detailed on this!! Do you have an irrigation system in the garden? edited by derien on 29/05/2012 We do yes, although no obvious leaks / wet patches and the garden looks pretty dry. The excess use is irrespective of whether we have it on or off though. There may be a leak in the Irrigation system and the water is dissappearing underground. you must have each nozzle and pipe checked immediately.

All my friends in france and Switzerland envy me for living in Dubai... Must be an English Tabloid thing Gosh, when I told my Swiss friends we might be moving to Dubai, they were absolutely horrified that we would even consider it. They all remembered a harrowing documentary about the life of construction workers in the UAE and thought we were money-grubbing, conscienceless people to even contemplate leaving Geneva for the fakery of Dubai. And now that Geneva is riddled with crime, salaries are stagnant and housing near impossible to find, they all want to flock here... interesting. No-one we know does :( Gosh, you've worried me, have things got so much worse there in the past 18 months? Dorter wants to go by herself and spend the summer there for work experience, I was doubtful about it in the first place and if what you say is true, I'm going to have to put the mockers on it now. I am of course exagerating a bit but from what I hear, things aren't good. People are stuck in a rut in Europe and it is no different in Geneva. It took me a while to get used to Dubai but now I realise how lucky I am. I think your daughther will be ok. I am taking my kids back for a month. But it's not all rosey

All my friends in france and Switzerland envy me for living in Dubai... Must be an English Tabloid thing Lol - I wouldn't go as far as to say our friends envy us for Dubai per se, but some of them certainly wish they could be in the sunshine like we are !! But I have honestly never heard a negative word about it..as I said before, like us, most of them had never heard of it til we moved here lol LOL. I have never heard anyone say anything that negative about it either. Sun, tax free salaries, big houses, cheap petrol, private education ( in English for us which is key as they would be in the French system otherwise)...... It's perfect!!!

I remember someone here a few months ago mentioned the hazards in some of these kids play areas in the shopping malls, imagining what it would be like trying to find an exit to escape in an emergency, and I really don't give it much thought at the time. But when you hear of this kind of tragedy, it really does make you think about all the places you take your kids too here in Dubai, the vastness of all them. It really is a wake up call. edited by mum2girls on 29/05/2012 It actually had me thinking about the little play area at the back of Magic Planet where my DD played for 30 minutes the other day while I was out on the games with my DS. There appeared to be only one entrance/exit. It really is a wake-up call for the entire region. Most of the buildings here are new so should be up to standard but I am afraid with the boom. many corners were cut and safetly was probably one of them.

I think what bee27 is trying to say is that Aldar is charging her for the fact that she has not provided the 2 post dated cheques as per their rules, not for the fact the fees are late ( which I assume they are not) That would be illegal anywhere else in the world but here, as Busybee2 said, it's perfectly acceptable. That is why I would never buy anything edited by derien on 29/05/2012

I would also be worried that she gave a set of keys to somebody else. Having thought about this a bit more since my last post, I would actually charge her the entire 200 AED and then get the locks changed again at your convenience so that you know where all the keys are!!!! edited by derien on 28/05/2012

The teachers are TCG are from Belgium & France. The level is excellent. Having said that, I would put your daughter in the French School if you have a confirmed place for September as the Taleem cut-off /intake system is terrible and does not comply with the rest of the schools in Dubai so you may have a problem if your child is born between January and July.

Just curious, in the top video, at about 20 seconds, there is clearly someone who looks to be a Philippino woman, in a short-sleeved t-shirt and pants, no head covering. I thought absolutely ALL women have to cover in Saudi? I'd wondered that too. Cross fingers nothing happens to this woman. It looks like a young girl to me. do young girls need to cover too?

I pay my maid the ticket home + the salary for the month. There is no 13th month So your contract leave is a month or 15 days? My contract says I owe her 1 month vacation and ticket back. If she takes the vacation, she gets paid as usual, if she doesn't take the vacation, she gets an extra month
