Thanks very much for all your replies. To be honest, it's not just the handwriting but an ensemble of things that are not right this year with my son. He is having trouble keeping up, is very inconsistent with his work ( some days he's fine). The teacher really doesn't have anything positive to say about his abilities and she has now involved Learning Support. I can't understand how this was not flagged before considering he has been at the same school since KG2. Why only now are we hearing all these negative things? I am quite angry at the school as they surely would have seen a downward trend over the years. We are starting Brain and Learning for a Semester in January which I hope will have a positive impact on him. But the teacher keeps going on and on about cursive writing as well so I thought I would help him in that area as well. :-(

Oh and FYI - I have been on every major news website today and not even a mention of Dubai winning the Expo?????? But wont it be talked about more than the Summer Olympics ;-)[/quote LOL. But of course it still justifies increasing rents by 50%, no? After all, it is the Expo!!!

Hopefully it will mean that Dubai has 7 years to stamp out the illicit activities and large foreign deposits that feed it's "overly buoyant" real estate market and put proper legislation in place to regulate markets edited by derien on 28/11/2013 <em>edited by derien on 28/11/2013</em>

What exactly has your daughter said about the young girl who is creating problems for her? Are you sure it is bullying or simply a misunderstanding between the girls? 6 year old girls are not really bullies yet - I know that girls can be "bitchy" as they get older but 6yo - that's year 1 and 2 so they are still quite young. Perhaps invite the young girl over to assess for yourself?

Maybe if all this were introduced here, landlords would be more willing to accept multiple cheques or even an automatic bank transfer every month That wouldn't make a scrap of difference. There needs to be a law passed giving all tenants the right to pay rent monthly without penalty, like just about everywhere in the rest of the world - that's the only way to make it happen. Monthly payments would open up the rental market here in a way that most LLs are far too shortsighted to see. The majority of tenants have to choose where they live not based on what they can afford month-to-month, but on what they can afford to pay in a lump sum - the difference can be sizeable. We know many people who could afford to live in a villa if they were paying monthly, but just can't come up with the full year's rent in advance (like most non-rich people). And of course, monthly payments would finally give tenants some much-needed power when it comes to things like maintenance. Far too many LLs only bother to communicate with their tenants at renewal time, and go mysteriously deaf to any requests for maintenance for the rest of the year. As soon as that rent cheque is cashed, tenants lose all leverage. If they had the ability to withhold rent until maintenance requests were fulfilled, LLs wouldn't be able to act in that way with quite as much impunity. edited by Madge_Gustard on 12/11/2013 I agree 100%.

I am a Muslim and couldn't care less what you choose to print on your body and which language you use. Just like I wouldn't expect a Christian to care if a Muslim wrote a religious verse on their body in Hebrew...it's not for me to judge or answer to!! No matter what you do in your life, someone out there will always find a way to make it about them so it boggles my mind why you would even care! edited by Sakhifa on 11/11/2013 Sakhifa, I love your response; so sensible & straight! Op, perhaps you could have the tattoo on the inside of your wrist so it's mainly you who sees it. I'm not a big fan of tattoos, tbh, & I'd prefer a nice gold pendant or beautiful print with Arabic calligraphy. You could wait until you've left the M.E. to get the tattoo then you wouldn't have to worry about people being over sensitive. edited by A Rancher on 11/11/2013 I'm not trying to be funny A Rancher but if people were to get sensitive about it ( which I don't believe they would) then you would probably find that it would be outside the region that people would object rather than inside the region..... just based on experience

Again, why would it be offensive? The fact that the Quran was written in Arabic is purely circumstantial. Arabic was spoken before the Quran was written. It's like saying "can I get a tattoo Latin because it's the language of the church?." If the quote is not a verse from the Quran, then I don't believe that it would be offensive. <em>edited by derien on 11/11/2013</em>

While collecting things is very sweet, more benefit will come from donating money to reputable agencies eg Save The Children, International Red Cross, MSF etc. It costs a LOT of money to send food/goods overseas and since comms and roads etc are out and will be for some time, the chance of the goods getting to their destination in a timely manner without spoiling, if at all, is slim to none. Not wanting to put a dampener on things, but if you want to help NOW, think money not produce. I agree and please be careful when choosing an agency to donate through. I would highly recommend that you avoid using any Philippines based agencies as they are as corrupt as the government and the chances or your money reaching the victims is nil to nothing. Pick an agency from the above

Sorry to hijack but how much does a breast reduction and lift compare to a breast augmentation and lift. Does anyone have any first hand experience with a breast reduction? How many sizes can you reduce by ? Are the prices similar? My friend had a reduction here in 2010. It cost 14,000 more than my augmentation. I do feel it would cost more than the cost of a lift and augmentation. She went down by 3 sizes and was only off work for one week.. I believe a reduction is a longer op and slightly more complicated than an augmentation. Dr Imran Tahir is supposed to be a marvel at reductions Thanks ever so much. I think I might go for a consultation this week.

Aghhh ok. You could always use his End of Service settlement to pay back those he owes ( I am sure they a ****** about lending him money) and then fire him. This guy sounds so similar to the person who was working for me. He was also in major debt and owed colleagues money. No it's illegal to deduct money in this way. The other people know how precarious his situation is and they won't be lending him any more. This money-lending culture bothered me and I started teaching money management during lunchtime. Language makes it hard but there are a few who attend every week and are getting loads out of it. Actually it is not illegal if you pay him the money in cash ( and he signs for it) and then you ensure that it is returned on the spot to his colleagues. You can have him sign a document to this effect. This guy sounds like bad news. Wouldn't that get flagged by WPS? I don;t know much about HR and salaries etc but I thought all salaries had to go through the system. That's the reason they've given here as to why nobody gets paid in cash. It depends where you work. Not all salaries go through WPS. Ours certainly don't.

If you are having to discuss this on your facebook and a public forum maybe you should be reconsidering your position. Wow, it's REALLY special to meet you! Ladies, please meet Lolacat - the woman who was born knowing how to do all aspects of her job. I actually agree with Lolacat - if you are an HR person coming on a forum asking how to conduct a disciplinary action, then there is a problem. It is quite simple - this guy is playing you. Sit him down and in very plain English tell him from today onwards, he will pull up his socks or be instantly fired. This is insubordination at its best. I'm not in HR. I'm a Sales Manager. Regarding firing, I want to leave that as a last resort because he's borrowed around 7k in total from various staff members. They will all lose their money if he is fired. Perhaps an HR manager would have no problem firing - thankfully I haven't got that hard yet. Aghhh ok. For goodness sake, this is Dubai. If the guy has issues reporting to a woman and is messing you around, just fire him!!!! No need for a disciplinary action. "You're fired" is universally accepted and understood. I had a guy like that working for me. He wouldn't look me in the eye, do anything I asked him and he honestly thought he could get away with it. I fired him! My life has been pleasant ever since. <em>edited by derien on 06/11/2013</em>

I am a LL in Switzerland and a tenant here in Dubai. We have had to move 4 times in 6 years and each time we had to pay an agent to find us somewhere else to live plus the removal fees. There are rules are in place for a reason and if for one second LL's had to pay the agency fees, they would think twice about kicking tenants out. The market here is definitely over-inflated and the bubble will burst again..... it's a given

We have a couple of friends who are in the same boat. DH is Muslim and Wife is from abroad. Both own property here but thee ownership is held through an offshore company of which they are both 50/50 directors. The UAE is no place to have assets if your DH is Muslim. The inheritance laws are out of date and discriminatory towards women. Also a good idea to make sure the majority of your cash is in a foreign bank account.

This is not normal behavior. This girl has been exposed to something. The difficulty here is how to bring it up with the parents. What if the parents themselves are guilty? I would honestly take Gorobattie's advice and not let your daughter play with this little girl. I know it's sad and cruel but 8 year old girls definitely shouldn't know about such things. Thanks for the advice. Husband now home and trying to ring the bank again. He's a bit freaked out as it seems to be a lot of trouble to go to - getting the headed bank paper etc. - for an unapparent reason. Both numbers on the paperwork are fake and the guys mobile no. was not a Dubai no. Will see what the bank have to say (if they ever answer their phone) and then decide what to do next. Husband's company have spoken to the landlord who says it's a load of rubbish and he is not behind on his mortgage. Husband is worried that I've signed away our life savings or something!! Oh my word ! That doesn't sound good at all. Just out of curiosity, which bank was he using as a cover? <em>edited by derien on 06/10/2013</em>

The person could have been from a debt collection agency. Many banks "outsource" their debt collection to other companies, and, considering the general state of disorganisation in most banks (!), its very likely that the bank may not have any details about this, which why they couldn't help when you phoned them. I would try to contact the landlord and find out if the story is true. If not, then the landlord can also lodge a complaint with the police and alert his bank about someone using (ruining) his/her name. yes, I agree with rawla. call your landlord. I would just like to add that if you are unable to contact your landlord or locate the chap that dropped of the documents, then I would go to RERA immediately and make sure that they are aware of what is going on. I would have for this to be real and you were evicted as you didn't contact the bank within the 7 days

It might be genuine. Many landlords are defaulting on their loans. Maybe he just needed a signature to drop of the papers and that's it. Why are your husbands employers saying its a scam? They rang the bank and the landlord and neither knew anything about it! It's probably the debt collection department of the bank

Many maids do this. They take stuff ( toiletries, food items, old clothes etc) and then they go to Church. For those of you that do not know what Church means, it is where they go to sell or exchange items that that they have stolen from the houses where they work. It's common in Dubai

im glad to have found this thread since i have the same concern about my maid . she uses her mobile plus home phone a lot during the day and night. she left iron marks (burns) on many of our clothes since she is also on the phone while ironing, would be carrying my little one with one hand and checking FB on her phone uing the other....etc i did tell her that she needs to limit phone use (twice already) to break times and after baby sleeps, but she only did that for a couple of weeks, then back to square one. also, every single night she is on the phone for hours which makes waking up in the morning a struggle for her to get the kids ready to go to school (as my office hours start at 7 am)... luckily , her visa residence visa expires in december and i started looking for another one You might want to check the contents of her BBMs and text messages. A few of my friends have had some very bad surprises lately with their maids moonlighting. Maids who are one the phone may be making appointments for work ( outside your hours)

That's it. It isn't as such about the government wanting free money, they want your money, yes, but as an injection into the local economy. Spend here. The workers can't though, as they do need to support families back home, but, as said, it is middle class' problem. Again I ask what incentive expats actually have to contribute to the local economy by spending here? Everything here is double the price! Hidden taxes everywhere

I sympathize with those who cannot have families here because it is too expensive; they need to be able to send money back home. On the other hand someone who has his family here should ideally not send the majority of his income abroad. Even then the reason people send money is because they cannot retire here. Why would they keep money in a place where it will be useless if they lose a job edited by Arch on 30/09/2013 Why would someone with a family ideally keep his or her money here? There is absolutely no incentive for any expat to keep money here. If you could safely and soundly buy a property here, be given a 10 year visa and retire, then yes it makes send. But expats can do none of that and if there is a death in the family, the funds are blocked.... yes that's right BLOCKED! I would say to expats that until such time as they are given proper protection from the government, then keep sending funds offshore. <em>edited by derien on 30/09/2013</em>
