If the guy had a stop sign and shot out making you swerve, he should have been given the fine..........but this is Dubai and even the Police don't know how to drive.

This thread is shocking! I cannot believe some posts I read. Just because you were born in Europe, US or Australia, doesn't mean you're God's gift to heaven. Er, No, because i have 15+ years experience and i have a degree from one of the top universities in the world. Not really anything to do with nationality or skin colour. So? For an admin job such as the one being advertised, I would rather hire a non-westerner without a chip in their shoulder and a bad attitude rather than a degree qualified one with the latter. Just because westerners have degrees from certain universities doesn't make them more worthy candidates. Some of them are as think as they come!

HR isn't as easy as it looks! Just because your friend has 10 years in banking doesn't mean he can transfer into a people facing role.

Wow! That's an awful lot of money to have to spend to buy a house given the absurde sale prices. I think this will push rents up which is a shame as they are already high enough

We pay ours 2100 AED and she is now apparently not happy! She works 6 days a week and gets 2 nights out ( leaves on Thursday comes back Sat Morning) My kids are older and at shcool from 7am till 2.30pm. Over Christmas, she got plenty of time off ( Xmas day + her usual days + 1st Jan) When I asked her to work Friday the 4th because we had people over, she started to dictate her conditions. I regret the day I ever put her salary up to this amount. The more they get, the less they work.

LOL. Shopping here is expensive and lacks variety. Taxi drivers have no idea where they are going.... How could that ranking apply?

Verbier is lovely. If you wanted to go a little further, you could also try Crans-Montana, Zermatt or Gstaad... all are brilliant!

[b'>Obama will make it his personal mission to see that Gun control is introduced in the USA. He now has absolutely nothing to lose! [/b'> Such a heartbreaking story. A parent's worst nightmare. RIP little ones. That's quite a statement - and if you know anything about the NRA, then you will know that it's not true. I have faith that he will give it his best shot. The NRA are losing ground in the US. Opinion polls show that Americans are leaning further towards more legislation around gun control

Ouch! I can't say that has ever happened to me with another Mum but if you have invited her daugther to many events in the past where you have paid for her DD outright and never asked for the money, then you have every right to be ticked off. Argh... some people are so tight with money though...

Just tell her that you don't want to post these types of messages on your wall as they are impersonal. Tell her that you care about her alot and that you are there for her. That's it. If she is a true friend, she will understand

You are not getting your point across because he is not listening to you! I would personally run a mile as this is the first sign that he has a one-track mind and does not care to hear what you have to say.

Thanks Derien for your comments. I have tried searching for flights to get costs for the maids flight however there are no airlines that will let me put a request in for December 2013. However Royal Brunei offer flights next October through Expedia for AED 2,500. Is AED 2,500 a reasonable amount to offer for a maids flight to Philippines? Yes, that's perfectly fine.

take the cheapest quote you can find for the time of year she is supposed to be travelling and that's it! Don't let her be like my former maid who would snub the quote for an airline ( that she wsn't taking) and ask me to get quote from EK or Etihad

I have to agree with Daza. I am actually glad I didn't have a maid when both my children were born. It was hard work, I was always tired and I had 2 C-sections so wasn't very mobile after either birth but I remember every detail of raising my children at that time in my life and I feel a great sense of self accomplishment. It was so rewarding..... I wish I could have those moments back. I wouldn't want to share that with a maid. edited by derien on 11/12/2012

The mileage allowance needs to take into consideration the cost of petrol per km, which is an easy calculation and the wear and tear on the car, which is not so easy to calculate

I could be totally wrong, but if the OP was on a Dubai visa, and the new company would sponsor her on a free zone visa, bets are off, correct? I am not saying it is ethical to go work for a competitor, but depending on her field, many companies could be deemed a "competitor" Yes, exactly... difficult to define competitor...

Non-compete clause are actually very hard to enforce in this part of the world. we have tried and failed ( we being the company I work for) on a couple of occasions. Unless your work is very very specific, you can't actually prevent someone from working in the industry again for a period of 2 years.

Spinneys, Carrefour, Expatwoman? Hi- thanks for this. Sorry I am so new to Dubai - only lived here a couple of months!. I didn't realise this was possible. Are there notice boards to advertise in the supermarkets? Where would I advertise it on expat woman? You can go to the Spinneys at Marina and put an add on the board. For EW, it would be in the classified section.

Tell her she either works the additional month without sulking to pay off her loan or you will cancel her visa, return her passport and leave her out on the street. She is taking you for a ride.

Pity please. I have two. One is bonkers and a pathological liar, the other is off the Richter scale with her offensiveness, judgmentalness and thoroughly unpleasant presence. I must have done something bad in a past life! The 2nd one sounds like mine. And she wonders why I never tell her anything!

Re seeing his family - I wouldn't. You'll get the mouthful! You'll be told "who are you to come to my house and disrespect my family as though my son is rubbish because you cannot control your daughter?" If you block him, she'll open a new account. More important, if you block him, you'll make him even more attractive to her. She is old enough to know the law - show her newspaper articles, remind her jail, deportation, your dh could be fired. Spend more time with her. If you pretend you're fine then she'll eventually pick flaws in him, if you make too big a deal then she'll start defending him rather than outgrowing him. Change her skating timings. Go to skating with her then take her somewhere adult-y after (lunch in a hotel). She'll outgrow him faster that way. Send her home for 3 mths in summer, that's normally a good breaker. Hope you find your solution. Ps, this is not a local thing. My 14 yr old cousin in oz has old men coming after her. Our culture is known for being open minded, and 14 is around the time many girls get their first big boyfriend, so she would have begun in the uk now to fall in love. Here is just riskier to fall in love and there are players galore here (from all over the globe)! The most sound advice I have heard on this topic.

Okay. Well I can imagine then how hard it must be for you. These types of positions are mainly filled by "Non Westeners" as they pay a pittance. Perhaps you could contact a few of the "upmarket" stores and see if there are any vacancies. I know places like Zara, Massimo Dutti etc hire differently then many of the other retailers
