Hi, Thank you so much for the detailed information, I will join the marina mums group on facebook. Isn't there a JBR mums one? I didn't think the marina is that much walking distance with a toddler! I look forward to moving there. :) There are is a marina mums group on Facebook you can join, it's pretty active and you can ask about play groups there, I presume they are free but my LO's aren't so little anymore. Welcome to the Marina :)

Hi everyone, I was wondering about living in JBR with a toddler- we have just rented a place there as it was the most convenient we could find. We have a nearly 2 year old daughter. Could anyone advise on play groups there (free ones and paid ones) and how friendly the area is with people with children? Any nurseries in the area that are good? I have never left her in a nursery but I will soon need to find one to leave her part time maybe. Is the JBR a very busy place to live in or does it depend on the tower? We will be in Al Fattan towers. I am coming from London so I am used to play groups being free- not sure what paid ones are like. Also the costs involved..preferrably I would like a nursery in JBR so I don't have to travel far to take her to one.

Hi everyone, It has taken me a long time in London to find the best brand of nappies- Aldi- Mamia nappies. They don't leak at night and have really become my favourite. Could anybody tell me how much good nappies cost there, I don't like huggies and pampers- they always leak somehow. I'm looking for average priced nappies or cheap ones that are also reliable. Thank you

Your personal Christian books and Christmas items will be no problem. When we came 34 years ago, Christmas wasn't celebrated here, but now there are Nativity Scenes in all of the Malls. As for your toiletries, there wasn't a Boots Chemist here all those years ago, but now there are plenty so you can get most things. With most heavy toiletries the cost of shipping them far outweighs the cost of finding a good alternative here. I understand about the nappies, they are light to ship and cheaper to buy in the UK. Even toilet rolls, same goes if you have a favourite brand. Having said all that, I do go home with an empty suitcase and bring it back full of goodies that are either not available here, or cost a huge amount here, and of course you get so much more selection in the UK. One thing I would suggest you bring is birthday cards and wrapping paper. There isn't much choice here and what they have cost about seven times the cost in the UK. So I go through the racks when I'm home and bring, Brother, Sister, New Baby, Our Anniversary, Sister's 69th Birthday, Mum, Granddaughter, Grandson etc etc. you'd be lucky to find a good 79th Birthday Card over here for instance. Its so easy when you have an event to go to, or even one you need to send a card home to, to just open your box and see what you have there. There is always Moonpig if you leave it a bit late to send, but that's not so personal. Good Luck with your move. Thanks for your advice especially about wrapping paper :) Will come in handy. All i want to know is whether or not i can ship things in bulk and be safe thats all. Don't want to risk any of my items being confiscated especially some beautiful icons i have.

I wouldn't bother shipping things like deodorants and shampoos. Yes they can be more expensive, but if you add the cost of actually shipping them here, plus the clearance charges locally, you won't be saving anything. Check to see if they are available here first - ladies on this site can tell you that, plus prices. Hi- the good thing is the company is paying for our shipping costs so its fine. Do they always charge you for clearance or what kind of customs do they charge? As i thought the shipping company handles all this?

Hi McB Thank you very much that is really good to hear. A lady from the shipping company wanted to make me aware of this incase there are any issues so it has really worried me. She said it's an islamic country so they may not be happy if checking things through customs. I'll be happy to hear from anyone else too. Regards

Hi everyone, Thank you all for your replies and kindness in advice. The greens i heard from someone that it doesn't have a close metro station depending on where you live in the greens - if you live in certain blocks its too far to walk to a metro or to shops??! Is that true? Is access to SZR very busy at peak times going to AD (Masdar city- its not gov related job) or its ok? As my husband will be working there - driving every day. He is not keen on living in AD at all, he much prefers DUbai. He feels I will be more bored there as there's not many malls or marina like areas for me to spend time in. We're receiving 225K living allowance so we will be looking for a 3 bed apartment. My husband is very fussy about the quality of apartments. Someone has got it into his head that the finishing of the apartments in THE GREENS isn't great neither are the pool facilities and the gyms there. In comparison to the marina. Is this true? Can anyone shed some light on the truth from what we have heard from people. GB

Hi all, Thank you for your kind words and support, it's really comforting to read about people that have been in the same situation. I guess I haven't completely grasped the idea of actually having no parents around to help! It's gonna take me some time to adjust I guess. About a maid- maybe to do some ironing or cleaning but i'm not keen on leaving our baby with a maid and I feel very strongly about it. Although my husband thinks its normal and will be needed, I'm not comfortable with the idea at all. I definitely appreciate those that have brought up kids with no support from families around them. Hopefully this will be a temporary living situation as I want our kids to grow up around our families.

I guess I haven't given that much thought as I'm always thinking that I'll be out with baby taking walks in the park rather than staying indoors. Of course I want to live close to amenities. GB
