Parents should be prosecuted as if they were anyone else - if not treated harsher. Shameful that parents are not prosecuted for murder when children fall off balconies or cook in cars. Here Here. If it was me leaving my dogs in the car, I'd be prosecuted and prevented from having any more animals.

When I came to join my husband, the only question I was asked at the airport was where I was staying, nothing was said about a return ticket and they had no idea I was joining my husband. Only thing I will say is it's quite difficult to get work in Dubai. I've been looking since I arrived in May and I know there are some who've been looking a lot longer.

Hi Irish We did look round JVC originally and as we couldn't find any sort of overall view had to do it by car. From what I can remember most of it is a building site and at the time I couldn't see any green areas. The only place I would have considered was Le Grand Chateau as it's a bit of an oasis with a pool. Forgive me if it has changed since earlier this year, but from the Emirates Road it still looks like a building site.

We used DKC to bring our pets over here and had no issues with them. They are a bit pricey, but both cats and dogs were fine after 3 weeks with them. I have since made contact with an English lady who runs Animal Care Centre, but it's a bit far out at Kalba. They are very reasonably priced and we are planning to go and have a look soon. Unless someone has any info on them.

Thanks for the info on the local farm. I would much rather buy local, which I do try to do in C4, it's just the quality when you get stuff home. I often end up throwing out more than I use. It's probably the way the staff and certain others shoppers tend to throw things around.

To know if a website is secure you need to check for the lock icon on the page and see that the url is https not just http its explained here http://info.ssl.com/article.aspx?id=10068 Thanks, I had checked that. I'm just not used to giving out so much personal information, so freely. I guess I'll eventually get used to it.

Never tried the Spinneys at MotorCity, but the one at Springs is good. I find their fruit and veg of much better quality than the likes of Carrefour. To be honest I still do a big once a week shop at Carrefour, but am quite happy to use Spinneys as and when during the week.

Do DEWA read the meters every month?? I've just checked our last 2 bills and the meter readings for the water worked out ok on the first one, but on July's bill both meter readings give the same number. We've checked the meter just now and taken a note of the number.

As someone who brought their cat over from uk to Dubai and also returned with their cat to the uk I can confirm that you do not need to do the blood test every year. You DO however need to keep the rabies vaccination up to date ANNUALLY and not , as they tell you in the UK, every 2 years! And......if you get the booster one a day after the year you have to start all over again and do the titre test so.......to all animal owners from the uk.....if you brought your animals over with their pet passports please set a date in your diaries for a week less than a year to get the booster done that way you can leave Dubai with your animal whenever you like - they just need frontline and worming before they fly back. I used Blue oasis vets at the green community and alison from dubai doghouse and they are well versed in what needs to be done. My gorgeous cat, Millie, at the ripe old age of 15 made her return journey back to the trees and grass last summer and we had no problems at all. Thanks for this Clairehdp. This is a great help so we don't end up panicking if/when we have to go back to the UK. Hopefully the vet we're using here will be good about this, as they've reminded us every time so far when one the of the brood is due for boosters.

Liquid shouldn't do any damage, but the issue most people have is the amount of product they use. Many think that they will save if they use less than the recommended amount, that doesn't work as it won't clean your clothes properly

I thought that as of January a blood test was no longer required. Sure I read about it last year. I'm sure that's true, as when we brought our brood out none of them had to have a blood test, just the rabies vaccination and then a short wait before they could travel. It depends on whether the country they come from is classed as rabies free

Re the booster. Why is the vet we're using here saying that we need the rabies booster yearly, when our vet back in the UK says every 2 years?? We have been told that it is a local requirement that all animals are innoculated annually in the UAE for rabies. If you let it lapse, then if you do want to take your pet back to your home country, you will have to get the rabies vaccination and the blood tests done all over again. Thanks wasn't sure if it was just a way of getting more money out of us:( edited by Dilys on 07/08/2012

I have the same problem with washing powder over here, whites don't come out white, and I don't feel they have the same fresh laundered smell. Also has anyone noticed fabric conditioners aren't the same either. I have bought Downey Stay fresh (blue container) a couple times and it's the consistency of water with a hint of a smell. I'm sure it was thicker at one time (could be wrong, memory failing). And sometimes the washing will smell lovely, other days there's no fabric conditioner smell at all. It's not my machine as I clean it regularly. Louise I am gonna try putting it in the drum instead of dispenser, thanks for that tip. edited by Alismum on 07/08/2012 I find the same with Parazone bleach - it's supposed to be 'thick bleach' and I'm sure it's watered down! I've even emailed the manufacturer but needless to say got no response! I'd be careful putting box powder direct into the drum rather than in the dispenser if that's what you're thinking of trying - not sure if you can do that, though I'm not sure why! Try it first with something that doesn't matter too much! Also make sure the machine is not overloaded as the bleach in the powder will mark anything coloured if it sticks

Unfortunately, unless you buy an electric cooker to replace the one supplied, Lootah are the only company allowed on JVT. We've had our cylinder for over a month and as far as I am aware haven't been charged anything yet apart from the connection fee and deposit. I have heard different stories regarding the charges and some say that they only charge you for the amount used. Mind we have padlocked our cage so they'll need to contact us to see how much we have used. It is annoying that they have the monopoly here

OK I'll probably get shot down in flames for saying this, but why is it so difficult for people to cover up when they go out? I've only been here a few months and would never dream of leaving the house without at least a short sleeved cardi over my shoulders and a skirt/dress down to my knees. I'm sorry but when I'm out anywhere the people who are dressed inappropriately get what I would call 'daggers' and I hope they feel suitably ashamed. If people can't live here and show respect for this country they shouldn't be here. Unfortunately I can't think of a way to prevent this, which would actually work, wish I could

I think the point is not really whether you think that certain outfits are "decent" or not, the point is respecting the guidelines of the country you are a guest in. Because that shows respect for the host. If you choose not to, you are disrespecting the host/cultural values of that country, basically saying, I know you feel this way, but I don't care, I'll do as I please. Its simply rude. Covering shoulders and knees (for MEN and WOMEN btw) is not that big an ask, I honestly don't understand why people choose to ignore such a simple request. I really don't think there is anything inherently harmful about wearing less clothing, I don't see shoulders/knees as sexual and they are not in MY culture, but I really think that is beside the point, is about respect for traditions that are not your own. In our respective countries we have dress standards too, a women dressed in just a g-string as might be a non-issue in some african tribal communities would not go down well in a supermarket in London. So yep, I'll put my hand up and say when I do see someone walking around blatantly not caring that they are dressing in a way that upsets the locals that I do judge them, I don't think they are showing lack of respect for themselves, but I judge them as being thoughtless/arrogant and careless, because that is the way they are choosing to portray themselves. If they truly don't know they are breaking the guidelines then frankly they are ignorant/lazy for travelling to what they know is a muslim country and not taking 5 minutes to think/read about what they should wear. Either way portrays them in a pretty negative light. Well said I totally agree. It takes nothing to quickly find out even just a little about the country you are visiting and even less time to fling a cardi or pashmina across your shoulders, and make sure your dress/skirt is long enough.

You could always try and offer 1 cheque, but they seem to have gone up quite recently, I think because there are not many empty now. I've just checked the website of the company we used to find our villa and all the one's they have on their books appear to be for minimum 110, but in multiple cheques, so you never know. edited by Dilys on 29/07/2012

We've been in JVT for only a couple of months and we love it. Yes there are still some building works ongoing, but where in Dubai can you really avoid that. The three small shopping centres at Springs are only a couple of minutes away, as is the nearest petrol station with it's range of takeaways. We don't have young children, but live in a 2 bed villa with 2 dogs and 3 cats!!! and there's still plenty of space. Our first DEWA bill was less than 1400, as yet we don't have a garden to water, but we did find it was the electricity that cost the most. This was with me being in the house most days, at least one a/c on all the time and our bedroom one on all night. The parks in and around JVT are steadily coming on and once finished there should be a number of children's play areas. HTH

Yup, I found that on my account, too - but each time it was the same gate, as if outward and return journey, perhaps? Oh no it wasn't but it was the opposite direction, I think. edited by simpleasabc on 28/07/2012 Just double checked mine and it says Al Barsha 09:21 and I've been charged and then Al Safa 09:29 and 0.00 charge. Not sure about that... I do know that if you pass through all 3 on one journey (say driving from MOE to airport end) you will only get charged for one toll (4 dirhams). They calculate that you pass all 3 within a certain time and only charge for one. You're a star. :) I did click at least one more that day, but didn't think the timings were that close together. edited by Dilys on 28/07/2012
