Sorry perhaps should have said I'm off to exchange my UK licence for a UAE one. Does that make a difference to the cost? Check out [url=http://dubai.ae/en/Lists/HowToGuide/DispForm.aspx?ID=11'>this[/url'> link. It's the official page of the Dubai Government and has very accurate information about the documentation and fees :) Thanks for that. Looks as if it will only cost 360 then. I was quoted 450

Off to get my first licence tomorrow, but I've seen two conflicting amounts to pay. Does anyone have any idea how much it costs. I've also read that you must have the exact amount with you? TIA

I agree with Salster, it's lovely here and the shops at Springs are only a few minutes away. Then there's also the Green Community and Motor City not too far.

We've just brought 2 dogs here from the wilds of Northumberland and they seem to have accepted the changes. From being allowed to run for ages off their leads, they have accepted two walks a day, one early morning and one late at night. I think that because of the change in temperature they are quite happy to just laze the rest of the day away, with the odd trip into the garden, which is no more than a few minutes during the heat of the day, and that's their choice.

All I can suggest, if you can find it our here is a Hot Oil Treatment, but leave it on for longer than suggested. Apart from that I've always used Head and Shoulders.

Good luck :) Felt exactly the same, put it off for months and months.... then put it off all last week... then finally on Saturday I got behind the wheel... the anticipation was FAR worse than driving was, I soooo wish I'd do it much sooner! I've got lost a few times but it doesn't really matter? I've got to know Dubai more over the last few days than I have in the last 18 months :) I went out with my DH the first time, since then I prefer to go without him because he stressed me out far more than the driving did! You'll feel so proud of yourself once you do it x Yes much easier on your own :)

IMHO the anticipation is much worse than the reality and I am sure once you are out on the roads you'll be fine. Keep reminding myself of that. Too much time thinking about something is a huge no-no! For me anyway. Re sat navs, I'll probably get one but I think a map might work better for me in terms of getting to know where everything is in relation to each other. With sat navs, I tend to just follow them like a robot and not actually take in my surroundings, landmarks, etc. Looking forward to all the coffee and cake coming my way!! :) Don't worry I've got the map too. I tend to look at the map before I leave and again when I (eventually) get where I'm going to. Driving around on my own with just a map wouldn't work.

I use to use slingbox a few yrs ago but don't bother anymore. As I can watch live telly on bbc1 and itv and watch previous nights episodes etc on the Internet and it costs nothing. The quality is much better then the sling box. I don't even need to download anymore. I use iPad apps connect my telco iPad and I have uk telly for free :) edited by fairycakeyumm on 27/06/2012 How do you get it for free please? I have apps on iPad for all itv channels ,channel 4 on demand all bbc channels etc also there are apps for live uk tv .....There's really no need to have to download anything, as ou can watch the same via a computer as well. edited by fairycakeyumm on 27/06/2012 edited by fairycakeyumm on 27/06/2012 Thanks for that. DH has just paid about £50 for expat telly, which gives us all the basic uk channels via iplayer and that type of thing. I was just wondering if there was a way we could have done it for free.

OK so I cheated a little. Bought a sat nav, which is really good, but I still get lost sometimes, mainly my fault as I think I know which way to go, when I obviously don't :( Only been here about 5 weeks and had use of a car for the last three and like most of the ladies on here, just keep practising. Only one problem with going to the various Malls - coffee and cake ;)

We used Mazz Ali from Goldenwave. He was a pleasure to deal with even when I was still in the UK. My DH gave him a strict brief on exactly what we wanted, along with other agents and he was the only one that kept on trying to find us somewhere, which he did and within our budget. Yes he always turned up on time, even occasionally having to pick my dh up from various places when taxi drivers got lost :) edited by Dilys on 24/06/2012

Morning Only just picked up on this thread and I think the donation idea is a great one, why didn't I think of it when my 2 were younger, it would have saved hours going round the shops looking for 'toys' that weren't too expensive to cause problems with the other mums (people trying to outdo everyone else!!)or ones that would break within the first few minutes. I sometimes felt that some of the children only came to see what they were getting to go home with, but of course you had to do it or I dread to think what would have happened to the poor child who had dared not give them. Just one question. When on earth did party bags become the be all and end all of a kids party? Whatever happened to just sending them home after they'd all had a great time, played games, won small pressies for that, and taking a piece of birthday cake with them. Or am I still living in the stone age ;)

Hi irishmist As you've unfortunately found out people do tend to skim read and only pull out what they want to. I do hope you don't have to give up on your cat, but if unfortunately you do, then you can be sure that you did try everything within your power to make things work. Do let us know whatever happens, I'll be thinking of you. xx

The one we looked at was similar as I wanted more bedrooms, but the outside space wasn't very large and we have dogs. Also are you sure you want to have to go up and down all those flights of stairs? I know you say you can't get out at the moment, but I would at least advise you to send your husband round for a quick look. I know everyone's ideas of the perfect house are different, but the drive through the building site ruined it for me before I even got to the houses. DH has just said why don't you have a look at a large apartment in the Grand Chateau as they looked ok edited by Dilys on 21/06/2012 Would love to Dilys but on a tight budget of 90k for a 3 bed I dont think there are any other villa/townhouse options. That was one of the reasons we came to JVT, tight budget and we had to lose a bedroom.

Hi hugsys Honest opinion coming up and I now live in JVT. DH looked at JVC and found that the finishings in the properties weren't too good and it does seem as if you're living on a building site. I know a lot of people don't like JVT, but the houses are lovely and large and majority are now finished. The only things on going are the parks.

I'm not an expert on this and would never pretend to be, but as you say you want to take him home with you. Depending on where you will be living, would he ever get the chance to be an outdoor cat with the option of a cat flap? Obviously not straight away, but once he has been in the new place for a few weeks. Unfortunately he may disappear for good, but at least you would have given him the chance.

sorry Lala but you must thing that we all live in Lalaland.... Be honest. Don't know who Lala :) is but it's not me we just have similar names, I go to London Style and Class after a personal recommendation from a friend, Louise used to do my hair, but when she was off on sick leave Helen started doing my hair. I have not used anyone else since. Didn't know Louise had left, but will ask Helen about the next time I go. Please don't assume an over enthusiastic poster is a member of staff and therefore think the salon and indeed Helen needs to stoop to such levels. Helen's work speaks for its self I certainly have no hesitation in recommending her. Thank you for posting. I only revived the thread because I was genuinely interested in trying the salon after reading others recommendations for Louise on various threads. I tried calling the 04 landline but it wasn't working nor was the email as it was returned to me. Maybe I will try again to see if I can get through. Please let me know if you do and if you go what it was like TIA

Well I suppose it is more like two confessions and am feeling very very bad today. Last night I ate my dinner early and gave the dog the leftover rice. The first confession is that I let him eat it from my bowl as I was going to put it in the dishwasher (the bowl not the dog). Not a good thing to do I know, but I did it anyway. Later on my DH was microwaving his food up and when I went in the kitchen I asked him where my bowl was as I was clearing away. His answer was that he was microwaving his food in it to save on washing up! I can't believe that I didn't tell him. I suddenly became very mute and I let him eat the food! I knew he was hungry after playing football and was looking forward to the meal and I just didn't know what to do. I need to confess this to someone and I still can't believe that I did it. Sorry I know I shouldn't laugh but !!!

it's the same as anything it depends how much effort you put in with other people. When you move there i would recommend posting something on the facebook page to say you have a 4 year old son who is looking for some play mates and i am sure you will get some responses. I dont have kids so cant really comment but i have met a lot of my neighbours in my district just by talking to people in the street when im walking my dogs. When the play areas are finished i would imagine it would be easier for your son to interact with the other kids. Hi Bracy Haven't seen many people walking dogs as yet, but no doubt it's a big area to cover. Could you please let me know which gardener you used, as I have about 15 - 20 cards in my kitchen !!!! and need to find a reasonably cheap one to do some work. Thanks Hi Dilys which district are you in? I am in district 4....i can dig the number out for the gardeners when i get home they have done quite a lot of work for us and maintain the gardener for us we pay him 200DHS per month. edited by Bracey777 on 18/06/2012 Thanks for that. We're in district 5, so could be reasonably close - or not!!!

Not my fault honest :( I just put a thank you on yesterday for recommending me a good guy to provide mine. On another tack TDB, was it you who mentioned a great place to get fresh fruit and veg a while ago? Hey Dilys - I recommended the Ripe store but commented this morning that I was disappointed as their stuff gets a bit too ripe after a few days and goes rotten, so back to square one :( OK thanks, I didn't see that post, it was just when your name came up I remembered. I've just had some guys from Nakheel round this morning as we logged a few complaints with them and so far I can't fault them (could just be lucky mind). Donwstairs loo didn't flush properly, slight leak in guest en-suite and damage to paint on other side of wall. Loo and leak fixed, now just waiting for a painter. It may be worth checking with other people on the facebook page, whether or not it depends on your landlord. When we emailed Nakheel, we also copied in someone from the company who owns our villa.

Hi I can't comment on whether he was cheaper or more expensive, as I probably went for more expensive material that I would have done back in the UK and there they would have been ready made ;) He's definitely worth calling just to get a price to compare with others, and his work and workmen were excellent. Hi Feebee I can't say too much as we have only been in our villa 2 weeks, but so far we love it. The space around and between the villas is so much nicer than any others we saw in our price range on Springs/Arabian Ranches and we had the same feeling about the bathrooms and kitchens. I also felt that the bedrooms were fine, but the living space itself was a bit of a squeeze (long and narrow), at least here we have plenty of space both downstairs and up. Yes we've had a few minor niggles so far, but Nakheel are sending someone out today to at least have a look. The parks appear to be coming on in leaps and bounds, the workmen turn up earlier every day. Yes it is a building site as far as the park areas are concerned, but nothing like the building site we saw at JVC. I would definitely give it serious consideration when you come out in July.

We take them out in the desert along Al Qudra road. Just follow the road out towards Bab Al Shams. After AR/Studio City roundabout go over the viaduct then follow the road out towards the desert. On the second roundabout after the viaduct there's a cattle grid on the left and some open gates. Turn left down there and drive as far as you want then pull over and walk the dogs, there are some bins by the gates so you can drop off any waste on your way out. Just watch for off roaders and that you aren't too close to any campers if your dogs have a tendency to snack on peoples picnics! Our vet also told us there is a spot past Studio City, she said to follow the road out from there eventually it ends in some undeveloped desert where she takes her dogs. We haven't tried it yet but are planning on taking a look soon. MBCO is at the Ranches main centre, we've also not had any problems taking the dogs to Costa Coffee there as well. Lovely thanks for this and I'll definitely watch out for the campers, our two will eat anything given half the chance. You'd think we never fed them :)
