Have been in Abu Dhabi now for 7 years, and still find it difficult to meet friends. We have a group of friends (all South Africans), but will be nice to meet more people. I have a 16 month boy, so playmates would be great too. Hi ssleroux:) I have a 2year old son and just moved to AD a month ago. am interested in meeting and making new friends as well:) I live in the Khalidiyah area...would you like to meet up at the mall or something? My email address is dimple28@singnet.com. Would love to hear from you:)

Hi Sissy:) No worries about the confusion; I have plenty confused myself with the way their phones and everything works over here! We've got the wasel sim card from etisalat; my husband had to show his passport since we don't have a residence visa yet. It is still expensive to make international calls; I think they charge for texts and incoming calls as well..am not sure. My 50dirham card usually last me for about 10-14 days depending on how much I've been texting or calling with it.... Hope this helps in someway; good luck and I hope you will be able to get the phone card that you need:)

Hi Sissy I know how frustrating it can get! We got our prepaid plan from Etisalat; first you have to go to an Etisalat counter and tell them you want a prepaid SIM card; You will need your passport for this. Then if you already have a phone, you should just be able to use the SIM card; we had to get a new phone. Then when you run out of credit, you can easily go to Lulu and get your prepaid recharged! Hope this helps! :)

Hi busybee:) saw this post thanks to Leen who sent me this link! I was wondering, do you have the location/phone number of this place. I would love to go and check it out. Thanks so much:) Hi, dimple28. I used Khalidya curtains also. Great job, really fast. I have several phone numbers for them. I'll put them all here, as I'm not sure which is correct. I dealt with Mr al Turkani there. The numbers I have are: 02 634 3859, 02 445 7085 and 050 615 8817 ( think the 050 number is Mr al Turkani's mobile) They are located on 5th between 26th St and 22nd. If you are on the Corniche heading toward Marina Mall, turn left onto 26th St. Go to the first light (Qatar Airways on left corner) and turn left onto 5th St (not sure if it's called Hamdan St at that point or not). At next light you will see All Prints on right corner. Park around there, Khalidya Curtains is on 5th, same side of street as All Prints, several doors down. Great thanks so much adpat:) I will go and check them out; your information is really helpful; many thanks!

And the guy who owns the place is really sweet... he always comes out and says hi everytime we walk past. yes isnt he. he is very helpful and will do what he can to help you. obviously it depends on what fabric etc you choose but if you go like for like shadows are more expensive and more difficult to get to in town too. Hi busybee:) saw this post thanks to Leen who sent me this link! I was wondering, do you have the location/phone number of this place. I would love to go and check it out. Thanks so much:)

There is a home center next to Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi. I believe there is also a furniture store that is located in the gold souk on 4th street as well. Not to sure about the used furniture shop. I have bought some pieces off dubizzle if you are interested. good luck! Thanks so much:) I think I am going to try and head to Marina Mall this weekend to check it out! Dubizzle sounds great and I might check out the one on 4th Street as well. Thanks again Sonomachic:)

Hey there! I have a two year old too, hate it how boring it gets at home specially int he summers here. You can start your own meet up, a friend here did and we have met twice already, just pick a place and a lot of mum are up for it. Welcome to Abu dhabi! That sounds like a great idea:) Thanks so much; really appreciate it:)

If you cannot view youtube videos about cartoons, it is not an issue of censorship but of copyright. Youtube does not want to be sued and so they remove copyrighted material at the insistence of channels such as Cartoon Network and BBC from time to time. That makes sense...oh well....we'll just have to buy dvds from the states and watch it then:) Thanks all:)

I would suggest the Grand Millenium Al Wahda; it is only about a 3 min walk to the Al Wahda mall...pretty busy but it is a great place!

Thanks so much busybee and bardophile! Yikes, this is frustrating. Is there any other company that might be willing to flex without the residence visa; i've been hearing that some people are still waiting for residence visas even after having been there for about 5 months! So how does one go about without internet or tv...is there absolutely no way at all??

Hi all, I've heard that one can't apply to get internet/cable packgages without a residence visa. Is this true? Is there another way to go about getting tv and internet set up if you dont have a residence visa. Any suggestions will be helpful and deeply appreciated:) Thanks!

Thanks so much for reply sweetberry:) your info has been really helpful. I dont drive and my hubby has a drivers licence but is not particularly looking forward to driving as we've heard stories about drivers in Abu Dhabi. We will just need to hire the driver., if this does not work out, we will have to look to hiring the car and a driver from a company. It will be also helpful to know how expensive it can get so we can budget accordingly? Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much! hi, you welcom dimple ........... car with driver mostly cost 4500 per month ... depends min starting from 4500 to 7000 depends upon the model of car ..... haha thanks cheers edited by sweetberry on 09/06/2011 Thanks so much sweetberry:) Wow, that is quite steep...well we'll figure something out when we get there! Have a nice weekend:)

We just did a driver visa recently. Our guy did not have his uae license yet, and is new to the country. The only thing I remember my husband saying was that he had to take car registration papers to prove we owned more than 1 vehicle before they would approve the visa. THanks for the reply momof3. Looks like there's going to be alot of red tape. Oh well...one day at a time:)

Hi all:) My family and I will be moving to Abu Dhabi next month and had a couple of questions. We have been receiving different information with regards to bringing religious items and are really confused at this point. Is one allowed to bring in religious items such as cruxifixes, bible and other religious icons/articles for personal devotion? Any advice would be greatly appreciated:) Thanks so much:)
