Wiltshire also still has grammar schools. Currently Teresa May is wanting to open more grammar schools up and down the country. Our eldest narrowly failed his 11 plus, to the surprise of his teachers ,but this may have been partly due the fact that most of the other parents had engaged private tutors for the sole purpose of getting their kids to pass !! We didn't get the memo and I only found out about it afterwards !! lol To be honest I feel like it's a form of cheating and if your child doesn't already have the required academic levels they will struggle keeping up once they get to the school..managing to pass the 11plus is only the beginning so it's best if they do so on their own merits, in my opinion..

I'm hearing that tickets to the KK event here in October could be nearly 6000 dhs. Am I the only one that could think of doing so much more with that kind of money? The show will just have to go on without me. Unfortunately that's the night I wash my hair. ;) Huda Kattan (Huda Beauty) was charging this much for her "master class" event... who ?

Facebook search is excellent - you can enter just a single word or name and it will show you all relevant posts either across the whole of facebook or just within a particular group. Its only fault is that sometimes there are too many results and you have to wade through a lot !!

I notice from another thread that you are a family. If you have school aged children they will need ID cards for the school contract, I can't remember if you need to have one also.

As a tourist you can't legally drive a privately owned vehicle, I'm not sure how you get a sim card for your phone, as already said, visa runs are a legal grey area and the rules can change overnight, not sure how easy it would be to use travel insurance for routine gp visits, you won't be able to get an alcohol licence so legally can only drink in hotels, if your husband has housing in his package it may affect his allowance if he is officially living here alone (though he may be entitled to more flights home !! lol).. I'm sure there are lots of minor things we take for granted having an ID - resident discounts etc, but I can't imagine any benefit associated with being on a tourist visa and can't really imagine why anyone would want to do so...

We always go home for summer because we want to spend time with the grandparents as it's our only opportunity, not because of the heat - personally I'd prefer it to the typical miserable wet weather we get in the UK !! lol.. Maybe others are lucky enough to have parents that can travel but for ours it's not an option. We still have our own home in the UK so we're not forced to spend 2 months living out of a suitcase imposing on the kindness of friends or family. Not sure that we consider it a holiday though - it's simply "going home for summer" and my husband usually only spends a week of it with us because he has to work. I don't believe it does the kids any harm to be away from their father - he often travels for work anyway and there are thousands of families who routinely spend time apart due to the parent's job...Forces families are without a parent for months at a time...Part of expat life is missing your family so of course we want to take every opportunity to spend time with them, that's why we do it...

This is such a great idea! I would have loved such a list in the past, and will definitely contribute. For now, I know that Eataly in Downtown (Dubai Mall) will be fully open from 9 a.m. to midnight. Also, Time Out had an article last month on restaurants that will be open. [url=http://www.timeoutdubai.com/ramadan/restaurants-open-during-Ramadan-for-lunch-breakfast'>link[/url'> Thanks, Admin :) And Ramadan Kareem to all! Geordie Armani has produced a comprehensive list every year for years !! http://www.therealgeordiearmani.com/fancy-lunch-breakfast-ramadan/

It takes a child a huge number of tries before a new taste is accepted (something daft like about 20 !!) so I think the mistake we all make is giving up offering too soon...but it's a pain when they keep refusing... Seeing other kids eating around her may make all the difference so I'd give it a try... http://www.fhs.gov.hk/english/health_info/child/20033.pdf

Hi I was looking for some advice on school pick up options. My son will be attending FS2 at DESS from September which is in Oud Metha. We live in the marina and both of us work. School ends at 2.15 and a day a week he may have extra curricular activities. As far as I know, there is no bus service from school to the Marina so I was looking for options for afternoon pick up only without having to employ a full time driver. I need somebody who will pick up our maid from JBR, travel with her to DESS, pick up my son and drive back. Usually a 2hr round trip. Any suggestions for an alternative to a full time driver? Thanks The only legal way is to engage a driving company or get taxis/Careem..part-time workers are illegal. Have you asked on the school's facebook group ? Maybe someone could carpool with you..

why are people commenting when they are saying "i don't know the full story".. ? One of the men on trial made heroic efforts to try to save the boy while others looked on, largely because of the Good Samaritan law here... There was a lot of discussion about this case on a facebook group and if I remember correctly it was pointed out that the mother has closed her blog and no longer posts online. There are very few people if anyone that knows the full story and yet you comment and telling not to comment if not knowing the full story. LOL !! I was quoting the only thing I do know - as told by a number of people whose children were there...But that's all I know.

My 12 year old doesn't play adult games although when he goes to friends' houses they all seem to play them - one friend in particular has a father who plays them and doesn't care what the kids do. They watch films that are too old for them too. Unfortunately you can't do much about it, apart from in your own home. I don't believe these games are good for kids even though they obviously understand they're not real.

wine's cheaper here than Sainsbury's !! unless you want really good stuff in bottles not boxes lol Salik tag sticks on your windscreen and charge you 4dhs each time you drive under a toll bridge on the Sheik Zayed Road..not sure how they work on hire cars though... Once you get your visas you'll need an ID card and driving licence - can't remember how much..probably a couple of hundred each..

Hi Any recommendations for a Phycologist or Marriage counsellor to help move a marriage forward when one partner has been cheating. Some research pointed towards Nicola Beer and Lavina Ahuja at Lifeworks. But if you have any personal recommendations. That would really help Once a cheater, always a cheater. I recommend that you either get over it or move on. And you had the cheek to call ME snarky !! lol Nicola Beer is excellent, I know her and she is very approachable. You've done the hardest bit - acknowledging that you both need help, good luck.

There are masses of Buy Sell Swap, Trading Post Dxb, Second hand etc etc groups - some are closed, some are public.. I don't think it makes any difference, you wouldn't give out your address on the group. Also loads of community groups that allow selling your own items plus women's or mums groups.

omg some scary posts here...the problem, as LT says is that this is a forum for expats, not Australians or British or Pakistani, and there are just too many different cultures for everyone to agree. Where I'm from Laiba Malik's advice is indeed shocking - and was probably written by a man !! Yes, be the good little wife, let your husband have his fun, you don't matter as long as you're being fed and clothed why should you care that you're married to a lowlife who despises you ? And no matter that your children will grow up believing this is the way to treat women and they will repeat the behaviour in their own marriages and so it goes on... but there will be other cultures of women here who have been brought up believing their role in life is to honour their man and be subservient to him and if he wants his freedom then that is his right...god help them... My advice would be, live your life as normal looking after yourself and your children as if he is not there, which you say is true a lot of the time. Be civil for the sake of the family harmony but get busy planning your future. Contact the woman's refuge for legal advise, squirrel away as much money as you can and make enquiries in the UK for help.Keep all your passports safe while you have the chance and bide your time. If you are able to gather any evidence against him without raising suspicion then you should do so.

Hi, dear Natasha, i have the best advice for you , 1. let him play around dont argue with him too much... 2. and dont go for divorce its a hard world to live by ones self and you also have kids ,please dont bring divorce even in your mind. 3. if you are with him he will have to pay all the expenses and in the end his life will be hard (keeping feets in 2 boats) he will realize it . 4. be patient and just let him know that he can do what the **** he wants to but also by doing your thing like always in daily routine make him feel you were there for him always and he also has responsibility for you and his kids , just let him loose he will get it in time . 5, you wont have more demands then his new lover just let him realize it by letting him free to do what ever he wants and in time he will realize it. FINALLY BY TIME EVERY THING CHANGES AND IF YOU DIVORCE HIM HE WILL BE WINNER AND BY NOT DIVORCING HIM HE WILL BE BOUND TO HIS RESPONSIBILITY'S HE WONT BE FREE, wow, this is the 21st century and with everyone banging on about how far women's rights have come it's tragic to realise there are still cultures where this advice is not only acceptable but preferable... No woman should ever have to tolerate living with a man who behaves this way and horrible to think of children having to be caught up in such a situation...and don't think children don't know what's going on around them because they do. I'm sorry for your situation and my advice would be the same as the other ladies who say get proper legal advice. Free yourself from this apology for a man - let him and his floozy rot together, and know that it won't last, if one woman isn't enough for him a hundred won't be...she'll be traded in for a newer model soon enough... Good luck.

Tesco pomegranate seeds are 80g for £1 and Geant are 125g for about £2.20. Tesco whole pomegranates (from Ireland) are £1 each but I bet they're not as nice as the ones from here !! None of the UK fruit is as nice as what we get here, in my opinion... Geant whole ones are just over £3 each.

It's not professional or credible, but sadly in the world we live in today, where so many people, especially youngsters strive for internet stardom, thanks to the likes of the Kardashians, it's happening a LOT. Also I've been shocked that companies in some sectors, before they employ you for a job, want to know how many facebook, twitter and instagram follwers you have - it's ridiculous. Whatever happened to being professional and being able to do a good job? Since "online reputation" is now a thing and prospective employers and even universities are checking up on applicants I guess this is just an extension of that.. I've been told of two A grade students who last year were refused a UK university place based on the content of their social media. Employers are using it too.

It is illegal to take pictures of anyone without their knowledge so placing cameras is a no go. Marking items is an option. I think you'll find it's legal within your own home providing you don't publish them and use them only as evidence for the police.
