Thankfully the thread has been removed but for your information, the story you posted about is actually a conceptual art piece by Chinese sculptor Zhu Yu - the story isn't true. Huh? The story Rose posted about is a hoax and the thread has now been removed - I thought she might like to know that it isn't true... As this thread title says, it's a message for Rose717. edited by Doubting Thomas on 08/09/2013 Sorry for asking. Thanks for being so kind to clarify. you're welcome :-)

Doubting Thomas, I understand your comment and somewhat agree. However, I checked the price online at amazon to make sure I was right in feeling robbed, and the price online is $2.99 or app. 11 Dhs. Even if you add tax, it does not justify going from double to triple the retail price -- again knowing they are buying wholesale. As I have been here for almost 20 years, I have bought many items purely for convenience and because I wanted it. I guess this has just pushed me to draw the line. If no one knows a contact number, I will definitely follow up with them early this week directly in store. I don't know if I will go as far as taking it to the Municipality, however, it may just depend on how sympathetic they are to my complaint or how I am treated. I'm sorry if I sound petty, but this just got under my skin and I don't want to just let it go without at least complaining. But Amazon is discounted - how much would you have to pay for them in your local supermarket ? Again, when was the last time you shopped in your previous local supermarket ? edited by Doubting Thomas on 07/09/2013

when was the last time you shopped at home ? maybe the prices you remember no longer apply... I've noticed in the years we've been here that the prices of some British imports have gradually come down (and the price of some things in the UK is shooting up...). It's our own choice whether we pay the prices here or not - personally we take everything into consideration - the tax we don't have to pay, the general cost of living here and just the fact that even though we are in the Middle East we can still buy our favourite products from home... Most of the time we don't mind paying...

I think part of the problem is that many women use EW as a source of information when they're new or even before they move, but are not necessarily forum savvy.. If you're not used to the ways of message boards it can be quite a shock to see how some types of women "talk"... I don't think that's the case. I think some people are just mean for the sake of it. Certainly people on twitter call frequenters of this forum worse and have a right laugh at some of the threads. you don't do Mumsnet then ? .. lol and agree about Twitter - plenty of fodder for amusement to be found on here. :-D

I flew (only from UK to Spain) on my last allowable week or two and it was very uncomfortable...and tiring...and I didn't have a toddler to look after !! Also, you can't assume that each pregnancy/delivery will follow a pattern - my first was 4 weeks early and my second was almost 3 weeks overdue !! lol I wouldn't do it, but i'm not you...I don't think anyone else can make this decision for you..

Ha ha ha I was telling my very good friend back in England about this site and that it can be really useful for newbie's and great for info on anything as the ladies are really helpful. He couldn't resist but go on and have a look at the forum. His words were something along the lines of..... "It's really good actually but some of those women are just vile!" and he insisted that they were probably [b'>men posting just for laugh[/b'>. or bored sixth formers.......

Thanks FD and S&O Its been made clear to us that its only for an increase previously. We refused an increase after he tried a massive increase after the first year, we quoted the law etc and he backed off; but he ( the LL's right hand guy who we deal with) put on the bottom of the email 'please be aware this will be your last year'. So other than trying to increase the rent with us last year he hasn't stipulated this year why he wants us out. Just the afore mentioned sentence on the bottom of an email. The worry is that others have said they lost their case as one years notice by email was sufficient! Can't afford to move, re-visa a new maid and afford to loose a rent committee case! Ha! What a week, my water tank is also leaking! I can see me getting through some wine this week! ;-) Our landlord gave us a year's notice by email in order to sell the property (he actually offered us first refusal) ) - we accepted the tenancy wouldn't be renewed and spent the following year letting people view !! lol

I don't understand why teachers or their customers take the risk...same as I don't get people who happily employ maids illegally... I suppose if you don't personally know someone who has been caught it's easy to think maybe the authorities DO turn a blind eye - even though the rest of us know they don't....

Faded Blue Jeans would you let the OP know where these 100k villa's are, afterall we are here to help when we can!!! Just dont get it that FBJ's doesnt want to reveal her location!!!! edited by salsB on 03/09/2013 Agree...rather odd... Why is it odd? If people suddenly bombarded the LL about moving in, then the demand goes up and therefore the price..... what is odd about that? i have a great nail salon i use, a small independent one near my house - people as for recommendations i would not volunteer this salon as i like to be able to get appointments. in that case you wouldn't brag about it in the first place !!

sitting here thinking.... if its a renewal no counter signing is needed, I was thinking of something else when I posted. you do need a counter-signatory if you've changed so much you can't be easily recognised - I renewed mine and my eldest's when we were home for the summer and we both got our photos signed.

Do NOT rely on an emergency travel doc from UK embassy, I had always thought that too (i've had one from an other country, but Dubai is different) a friend tried it recently, with all the good excuses, family member dreadfully ill, not expected to make it etc... But no dice! Bit of an eye opener! Not sure how it works with duel passports but all I'm saying is until you've tried it's not plain sailing. It might be alright to get out of here but if your res visa is in the passport that is away being re-newed, [b'>it will be cancelled [/b'>and getting back in here will be a nightmare,. your visa doesn't get cancelled when you renew your passport - you have to carry both the new and the old passport until the visa expires... eta - I think you can get it transferred to the new passport but i'm not sure how.. edited by Doubting Thomas on 01/09/2013

It's an old topic, I know, but when the kids can't work part time here when they're teenagers, it becomes all the more important. my teen has a part-time job, as does his friend... Interesting! None of us can ever possibly know what goes on behind closed doors...the OP's friend may have had some drama back home or be having to clear old debts there or any one of a hundred different things that swallow our cash...you may never know and really it's no-one else's business is it ? Likewise Amy, it's easy to sit in judgement of others but you will never know how much income people have or how they spend it...

I should think many men would struggle with the idea of their wife being the main bread-winner.He may be feeling a bit emasculated which is causing him to be depressed as others have mentioned. You need to talk to him properly to find out how he's really feeling, and be supportive...If you are away for that many hours it must be hard for him to stay motivated, being on his own so much... Could you not work your hours so that the two of you can at least get a night out together occasionally ? It seems to be all work and no play....or is that how people here have to be ? Good luck.
