Now I am getting worried! My maid has just gone back to the Philippines to get married. She may or may not come back with a honeymoon pregnancy. We as her employers/sponsors are fine with that but what are the laws and regulations regarding our position and hers? What about hospital appointments? Feel like a whole can of worms has been opened.

Hi, hope you don't mind me jumping in, but do you know if Dr Loubser will treat adults for allergies as I know he is a paedatrician? I did the food intolerance test w/ Dr Heather Eade because in the last couple of years I developed asthma which I've never had before (I am late 40s). It gradually worsened over the last six months where my own GP thought it was bronchitis and allergy to pollution and treated it with antibiotics. Relief was temporary so I sought other help. The test results showed intolerance to egg, dairy, wheat, celery, certain beans and carrots were borderline. I'm somewhat suspicious as other people have done this test and it comes up with the same three culprits! I've been off these items for a whole month and have definitely noticed that an improvement though. I now use the inhaler maybe once or twice a week instead of couple times daily and the wheezing and crackling in my chest is almost gone and am not coughing up phelgm as much. Dr Heather says in my case I can probably introduce it after 3 months but last week I ate a bit of egg and noticed 24 hrs later that the wheezing and shortness of breath was back. I'm so glad I found this post as I am searching for gluten free items but also foods that are egg free which is very hard. Also, does anyone have a list of restaurants that cater to people with food intolerances / allergies? Quite a few coffee shops serve soy cappuccinos, thank goodness, but it would be nice to get a plate of pasta or pizza occasionally. Thanks.

We use MAB and they have been fine. I thought H&G were great but changed because they were far too expensive and wouldnt negotiate on their fees.

There is a camera along that stretch of road near to the turn-off for the Palm that is going off like Christmas fairy lights. This afternoon I was hovering around 70, speed limit is 60 and everyone is getting flashed as they drive down there so stick to the speed limit!

Mike Small at VSM Consultants. [email protected]. You've probably heard him on the Property Show. Have a chat, they build a spreadsheet of your finances and then offer advice. No hard sell of any financial products. I also second Stuart at Synergy Financial.

The Embassy at The Ritz Carlton. 3 glasses of bubbly and great food. Then you can walk over to Buddha Bar afterwards for nightcap. Sorry, can't remember which night it was!

I live in Meadows close to Town Centre and I really enjoy it. I certainly feel safe living in this community. Most of the Meadows you mentioned are good. if you wanted to be close to SZR then choose 1 or 2 but you will be closer to JLT and will probably hear the hum of traffic more than if you lived further in. as for getting onto Al Khail, then the Meadows round the back close to 9 will take you straight onto Al Khail. I find the traffic manageable in the mornings, but then I leave a bit earlier than most. There is a glut during drop off and pick up outside Emirates Intl School which can cause delays but nothing major.

I bought a gorgeous necklace from a house sale in Dubai couple of years ago and wondered whether anyone would know if this Nordic brand is available retail in Dubai. Someone mentioned they had seen it in Dubai Mall but I think it must be a consession as I have not been able to find it. Thanks!

Also looking for two tickets for tmrw night on behalf of a friend, pref same price for Sunday or Monday. 050 three nine four eight 572. We went on Thursday night. Alough we enjoyed the performance itself and the wonderful orchestra, the venue leaves a lot to be desired (take note Alchemy). Felt like we were sitting in an aircraft hanger, Seats were the metal flip down ones and very uncomfortable for a 2 1/2 hr performance and the noise from outside was dreadful. During the transmission recommend you make a dash for the toilets as they are very limited. Enjoy!

I am taking lessons in JLT at Quba. I am also beginner and am in a small group with a couple of friends as they are flexible with timings and also reasonably priced. I am enjoying it so far although the text books arent great. I looked into ALC and Eton but their timings were fixed and ALC is a long drive.

This may not be independent as such but I find the coffee at Armani Cafe in MOE very good as well as the coffee at the coffee shop in Galeries Lafayette, Dubai Mall on the food floor. There is a coffee shop that also does food in that new place eco/green building the Change Initiative(?) next door to Hacker on SZR but haven't tried it myself.

I agree. My father is disabled and spent 3 weeks here on vacation with us. We found that most of the time we were actually treated with courtesy pretty much everywhere we went and people did go out of their way to let us pass and give priority. However, we also had a walking frame for him for very short distances and he was treated worse when using this as impatient people tried to get past him. It was somewhat awkward in the mall when we tried to use the disabled toilets as you had one in either the men's or the women's. My mum is the main carer so she had to take him to the men's which wasn't so great for her. There were no separate disabled toilet entrances.

As recommended on this site, I tried Nails at Home last month as a treat for my invalid dad. 04 298 0707. www.nailsathome.ae. I got him a mani and pedi and he loved the pampering! Had two therapists who did a great job. They use Essie colours (not on him of course). Mani and Pedi is AED140 and transport depends where you live, cost me AED40 on top. They bring all their own kit so you don't need to provide anything except hot water.

Just started Freedom by Jonathan Frantzen. I enjoyed his previous book The Corrections and this is in a similar vein. Before that The Song of Achilles (good storytelling but her style did grate on me in places) Before that Night Train by Martin Amis

In that case there's not much you can do except take all your clothes out, give them a good airing, clean out your cupboards with hot water and dettol. Bugs could be attracted to areas that are damp or if you have clothes that are compacted together or even have food on them. Try lavender bags.

I posted last year about these mysterious holes in my tee shirts appearing around the waist and tummy area and us expat Sherlocks figure the culprit is the zip pull on our jeans. It's easy to rub against them if you're standing next to a counter top or if you are wearing your seatbelt they snag on the sharp corner. All my cotton tee shirts are ruined like this. You can always try lavender bags or the cedarwood balls you can get in Lakeland. I use one mothball per drawer or wardrobe and it doesn't smell too bad. If you go to Daiso they have the Japanese ones which don't seem to be so smelly.

A new sushi restaurant has opened called Tomo in Raffles Hotel next to Wafi. It's being run by the chef who used to run Kisaku. Unfortunately, it's gone upmarket and it won't be at the reasonable prices of Kisaku. Otherwise the one in Madinat is pretty good too.

Yes it has got worse in the last month or so. Thursday evenings you can forget it and even Friday evenings are hit and miss. I tried to book one at off-peak time (Friday lunch) and there were none available at all! I've even resorted to having to walk to the main road and see if I can flag one down. I was told that their computer system is accessible to all the other taxi companies in Dubai and they've been having quite a few glitches. Honestly, just fix it!
