Well put Madge Gustard. Another bubble waiting to happen but hopefully people will have learnt from the last few years. People have short-term memories and are carried away by media hype.

Unfortunately the golf section at Sports Direct at Outlet Mall has moved to Golf House on SZR! I also heard Decathalon at Festival City next door to Ace was pretty good. Can you wait for the sales?

I've just booked my parents with Staysure. www.staysure.co.uk. They also do coverage for expats. They were on the recommended list of insurers for over 65s from an article in the Telegraph. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/columnists/nicktrend/8505286/Travel-advice-the-best-travel-insurance-for-over-65s.html

I lived there for over 10 years before coming here and absolutely loved it then as I was married no kids but there may be a chance that we have to go back in the near future. I'm personally not looking fwd to it compared to Dubai (great place to bring up kids, relatively safe, help on hand, great expat lifestyle, lots of space, etc). Going back for me would mean downsizing in living standards from villa to flat, eyewatering rents, competition for school places, terrible pollution, frenetic energy and so many people everywhere! I'll be going back w/ family and pets in tow so I would probably choose to live somewhere like Discovery Bay where it is a bit more chilled and animal friendly and away from the buzz of it all. Summers in both HK and Dubai suck but at least in HK you get the four seasons and that is lovely. Plus side is you can go hiking every weekend as over 50% of HK is countryside, efficient, good public transport and generally safe.

Our kitchen was fitted by Oliver Göettling at Goetting design. 04 - 885 2125 / 050 260 3220. Email: og@goettling-uae. He also recently finished my friend's place in GC. Holadxb that price sounds about right if you want decent finish and appliances. Oliver can tailormake if you have a budget in mind. My friend has an Ikea kitchen and hers looks good in her Lakes house but they are not so good on the details and final finish.

Depends who it is. If it is mum and dad I pay for everything, if it is friends I pay for the first night dinner out, the odd lunch/coffee and leave them to it. I give them my entertainer book to use as well. Luckily I have friends and family who are good guests as they reciprocate in other ways and don't eat me out of house and home.

This smells fishy. Throw the ball into your maid's court and ask her how she expects to compensate for the visa cost. Does her new employer to be know that she was still under contract? You could tell her that her new employer could compensate you for the visa cost if they are desperate to employ her. If her new employer to be knows that the contract hasn't been fulfilled then surely they would not pursue it? In any event, whether it is Romania or something else, sounds like she wants to leave and you will have to come to some arrangement with her to recoup your cost. Working it off over the coming months sounds like a viable option.

My 5.5 yr old DD uses the 'don't like the toothpaste' excuse because she doesn't want to brush her teeth. Last week she loved Sensodyne's kids toothpaste in mild mint so I went and bought 2 extras and now she says she hates it. Can't win.

I buy mine from the little Choithrams next to Lakes Club. There is also post box outside. if you want to send anything registered then nearest is Al Barsha PO. I used to go to Ibn Battuta, they used to have a photocopy shop but don't think it reopened.

This made me laugh though.... “If this is the case, I’ll have to sack him. My maid won’t clean the car so going to the petrol station for a car wash is the only option that I have,” complained a Emaar resident.

You need to keep bugging them constantly so they'll be so sick of you they'll do anything to get you off their case! Case and point w/ the same bank, I deposited a cheque via ATM machine and when I checked my account a few days later, noticed that the deposited amount was AED100 less. They had taken it out for 'charges'. WTF? It was an AED cheque in my name! After constantly bugging them by phone and email I noticed that it was refunded. And not one word or email or apology. Tut. Hilsbils - threaten them with going to the newspapers? I had the same thing happen to me in the UK with N-W and luckily I printed off the receipt to show the amount and they reconciled the amount at the end of the day so nothing was withdrawn from my account. It should be very straightforward. Good luck.

Is not the property registered with RERA? Surely between RERA and Emaar they have the LL's contact details to CALL him or threaten that he will not be able to rent/sell his property until his service charges are paid? What about the Real Estate agent? Who was he talking to?

I've noticed that it has got really bad since we all got back this summer. It's the volume of traffic and it is so stressful. And alot of drivers just seem to be driving faster, closer, weaving, drifting, no manners, etc. etc. and I am using the horn more frequently. This is like pre-2008. Horrible. Any clues as to why this is? The recession ain't over!

I bought a new set of ladies Callaways from Golf House on SZR during the sale in the summer. definitely worth a look in there as they have the best selection. You can also try them out. They will usually have discounts on older models.

I've tagged onto an older thread as I've got my parents visiting for the whole of December. (thanks for the ideas below ladies). My dad had a stroke 18 months ago and needs to use a zimmer frame with the little wheels which he will bring with him from the UK but he will also need a wheelchair as he can't walk more than 5 minutes. Does anyone know where I can hire a wheelchair here for a whole month? Is there a guidebook of sorts for disabled people in Dubai eg. best malls or restaurants with ramps (!), parking, etc? I'll enquire at the RTA to see if I can get a temporary sticker for my car but it sounds like it is more trouble than it is worth. Has anyone used the Mahaba service (?) at the airport? Or should I just contact the airline and get them to help with wheelchair assistance free of charge? Any tips appreciated! Thanks! TIA

Thanks ladies. Just found this on the DNRD website. It says if you extend you can do it for a whole month PLUS the 10 days grace period. So I don't understand why there is a fine as it states that there is a grace period. Or are they saying that you only get the grace period after 60 days (the one month extension) and not 30 days? Fees: 1- (620) AED extending fees, as follows: (500) AED entry extension fees within the state for one month. (100) AED local fees. (10) AED knowledge fees. (10) AED services fees. (40) AED health insurance. Additional Info: 1- validity of entry permit (30 days) from the entry date extendable for one time and for the same period (30 days) 2- the holder of permit entry shall be granted a period of (10 days) for extension and departure and in case of delay for more than the days of the determined period, the fine shall be paid for number of days of the period.[/u'> · Total period as of the entry date to the end of the extension period (70 days) I'm confused!

I have been having the same issue in the last few months as well. When DD is watching someone on iPad or DVD I have to keep telling her to turn it down. Goodness knows why they need it so loud. It is the high pitched noises from children's programmes and squeaky cartoon sounds that are like fingernails on blackboard to me. Often when I am in coffee shops or restaurants The music seems always too loud and I can't hear myself think, have a conversation with someone without it interfering or enjoy a quiet coffee. I find it hard to blank out. I have resorted to shutting myself in another room or giving my DD earphones to watch her iPad and not going to coffee shops that have loud, usually unsuitable music.

I do what dramagn does, figure out the 'cost per wear' that I would get out of something. Question I always ask myself when I'm in a shop and considering a purchase is 'do I NEED it?" Usually the answer is no unless I come over all tingly then I walk away and if I keep thinking about it then I'll justify getting it! Sunglasses I'll pay for, face creams and make up I buy across the price range, shoes and clothes I buy quality/classic over quantity. If I want designer, I go to Outlet Mall or wait until Boutiques go on sale, and never buy the full price. And remember "Buy Cheap, buy twice".

Yes it is good and convenient location. However, I find the prices seems to be somewhat higher than their competitors. Personally I prefer The Cure in Media City.
