Having taught in "Arab" and "Western" schools in Dubai and done supply around the city I've never seen a school that doesn't have a healthy eating policy. Schools can only do so much, its not their job to raise children. Perhaps if you don't want your children to eat the treats that other children bring in you could teach your child to say no thanks, or is self control something that should be added to the curriculum as well? Of course it's the parents' responsibility to raise children but seriously, a school marches its class into McDonald's and the children are the ones that should have self-control?! The mind boggles!

Is it something he's likely to wear again? Yallabanana have an offer at a tailor in JBR, something like 749 for a tux tailor-made.

Have you left a message with K9 friends? I'm sure I read somewhere recently of a lost Pom but I can't remember where. And hello, by the way :D Hi :). Hope all's well! Owner has been located, I'm happy to report. She was from the street behind ours and somebody had left the gate open. I'm totally not a small-dog person but I was kind of sad to see her go! I'm not sure if the municipality have a record of all imports but they definitely don't have a database of all registered microchips here. The lady I spoke to at British Vets said it's something they're trying to work on.

What guys came? Lol You need cards Probably a total bunch of shysters - I wouldn't have a clue! LOL. marycatherine I have no idea :(. The guys brought boxes and wires and we do have some channels free - well, lots of them - but all the ones we'll watch are scrambled. I'll take a look at the OSN site, thanks, but do you know what this 'card' is that the guy was talking about? This is the first time in 12 years I've lived in a non-freehold area so I am utterly bamboozled :).

I think there are two developments - the one Miss_dxb is talking about and the Nakheel ones on the edge of JVC, next to Al Khail road. I've seen two of the JVC ones on Dubizzle in the past month.

DH has his passport as he travels a lot with work, but he frequently has to hand it in to embassies to get visas for work travel. His work have always reassured him they can get it for him in an emergency. Last year we got a call from the UK on a Friday to say my dad was critically ill and it was when DH's passport was with the Saudi embassy - what a surprise, nobody from his office was able to get it back for him so I had to travel on my own and leave my children behind. PS To go back to the original topic of the thread, get the Al Waha Neighbourhood Watch to keep an eye on your place for you! X edited by DubaiCat on 30/05/2013

Hi H, I had it with both my pregnancies :(. With DS my bp was up from about 25 weeks with protein in my urine, and I got to 37 weeks before my doctor decided to induce as my blood test results were deteriorating fast. With DD I actually had low bp until 35 weeks when it shot up and then started bouncing all over the place, and DD was a C-section at 36 weeks. Keep your fingers crossed you don't get it again but don't be surprised if you do. Best of luck!

Check the RERA rent index and see if the rent you're getting is substantially lower than the market rate shown on the rent index. If it's a certain amount below, you may be able to increase within the law (as far as I understand it).

No worries - it's very pertinent to our situation so fire away! Yes, Poppy, it's that I feel strongly about DS doing FS1 at nursery. I'm trying to mirror what he'd be doing at home in the UK, and I just feel 'school' at only three is just too much. He's a June baby so he'll be among the youngest in his class and he's a big guy for his age, so I'm worried too much will be expected from him if he's at a proper school. Also, I just feel a school environment isn't what I want for him at such a young age. At home he'd be going to the pre-school in the church hall up the road, not a huge great big school campus! Of course, I'm concerned about FS2 but that's next on my list after moving house and finding him a new nursery :D.

No worries, and that's a good idea - if I get no joy with the agent I'll pop into the salon tomorrow (might just get waylaid by a little treatment while I'm at it!). It really was lovely. Huge, well maintained, big garden... probably waaaaaay out of our budget :(.

Also now this I can't believe but my husband told me the other day ( I'm away until end may) a villa beside the Royal Retreat (beauty day spa, where I go ) is up for rent they are Huge though, but the price was a steal I will ask him tomorrow. Maybe it's in very bad repair . Any help so much appreciated, thanks! PS Bad repair is fine, we can work on that :). edited by DubaiCat on 20/05/2013

What was that orange juice stuff that kids went nuts over in the UK and then it was withdrawn because it had something like five bags of sugar in each drink? I can't remember the name. My little darlings eat wholegrain porridge oats with organic milk and a light dusting of flaxseed on the top. NOT. My kids eat whatever I can get down their necks - scrambled eggs, porridge, toast, eggy bread, pancakes, cereal, fruit, yoghurt... I try and pick the healthiest option for whatever it is they're eating but I'm not going to get my (big) knickers in a knot if they choose no to something I'd like them to eat so I can tell all the other nursery mums what good breakfast eaters they are :D. PS I also have a child with constipation issues and I would choose Ribena over the sobbing and screaming at poo time any day of the week.

My Dad came for six weeks 18 months ago and we completely forgot about the visa issue until somebody asked how long he was staying one night! So his ticket was booked for the full six weeks and Emirates didn't say a word about it. Nothing at immigration either end. We ended up sending him to Doha for the day - 400dhs for the flight and he got to go through duty free :D.

Warqa 1 and 2 are just over the road from Mirdif, right? I know he'll only consider Mirdif as a last resort, as he's dead set on being closer to the beach and the 'centre' of Dubai, if you like.

I have never seen this either. I avoid places with alcohol anyway. And for a good reason it seems. Steady on, it's not the root of all evil! :D There are plenty of places we go, with alcohol, where everybody seems perfectly able to behave themselves with respect and decorum while having a few bevies :). PS Better to avoid places with chavs.

I saw butt cheeks, boobs and plenty of thigh. And, at the end of the afternoon, a nipple ring on the table next to us. im hoping that this was not attached to nipple.... Attached to the nipple. Positioned just above a considerable expanse of beer gut, which seemed to have worked itself free from the shirt.

And the restaurant manager did nothing about it?? It is drummed into us that exposure here is forbidden an yet no-one does anything...crazy. I saw butt cheeks, boobs and plenty of thigh. And, at the end of the afternoon, a nipple ring on the table next to us. Sadly the girls I went with were visiting from Doha and really wanted to try this brunch, otherwise - having heard all about it - it would have been last on my list.

Thanks ladies :). The villa was just before the Bin Sougat centre in a compound in a nice leafy part but sadly the garden is just too small :(. We were hoping it might be doable with the other great features making up for it, but it's just not practical with the dogs. I did like the area, though, so it's definitely still on our list! ETA I don't care at all that it's not an 'expat' area. The other areas I'm looking at are Al Badaa, Satwa and Garhoud so I'm definitely not after a Stepford Wives place :D. edited by DubaiCat on 19/05/2013

I'm pretty sure it is, but in many places on a Saturday night the fuzz would be run off their feet trying to arrest everyone who did it! Last time I went out I saw a girl and a guy up against a wall, in plain view on the high street, him shoving his hands up the back of her skirt so her entire backside was on view to anyone passing. Somewhat put a damper on my evening :(. Mind you, the scenes I saw in Saffron a couple of weeks ago weren't far off - it was hideous. I was embarrassed to be from the same country as my fellow brunchers.

have you looked at Al Barsha South ? Why dont you drive around there, lots of the villas have rental signs on them with mobile numbers. My sister in law managed to find one like that and she rented directly off the owner who lives in Rashadiya ! Is that kind of in between Barsha and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road?
