I saw her when DS was about five or six months old, and again a couple of months later. While she did recommend a psychologist, she also said she'd be happy to prescribe medication if that was the route I wanted to take. I was adamant I didn't want to take anything (oh, how ridiculously stupid of me, but for some reason I felt like I wouldn't be 'me' any more if I was on medication for it) so in the end, I did nothing. I would have been better far sooner had I done one or the other. DS is 16 months now and I still have good days and bad days. I'm due with my second in about six weeks, which I think isn't helping at the moment as I seem to be having more bad days than I used to. I think, though, I started feeling properly better around eight or nine months post-birth, just before I found out I was pregnant again. At this stage (before the second pregnancy) I was back to exercising, getting out by myself more and generally just feeling like I had some kind of life outside being a mum again. Can I ask, does your LO sleep well? I was originally diagnosed with PND in the UK and my doctor there said it was likely caused - or at least exacerbated - by extended sleep deprivation, as my son was a terrible sleeper from 4 to 8 months. Now I'm well aware that broken sleep, or particularly being woken while in a deep sleep, is the main trigger and a few days of that can easily send me over the edge again. One of the worst things about PND, for me, was admitting it and talking about it. I hated feeling weak and like I was a failure as a mum because of it. I still feel like that now but am fine talking about it on good days (bad days, forget it!). I'm utterly petrified of having it again with baby #2 - and I do sometimes think it's never properly gone away since DS - but one thing I'm absolutely sure of is that the minute I start feeling anything like how bad I felt at its worst, I am straight off to the doctor to take whatever they can give me until I rattle. Do go and see Carol Smylie. She is very sympathetic at the same time as being practical and logical, which is just what you need when you're emotionally fragile. I bawled in her office both times I saw her and she was fine with that! I so hope you get the help you need soon. It's a horrible, horrible situation to be in and I feel for you.

Hmmm... I wonder if they'd investigate if they weren't legal. I mean, I want to protect us and avoid being lumped with a 50k fine but I don't want to be responsible for someone's livelihood going down the pan! I'll see if I can find a website I can check on, thanks.

I wonder if she'll ever change, or if I'll ever change my opinion of her :\:. It actually makes me quite sad hearing that you can't wait - I'm starting to realise DS and I are missing out on a whole extended family and it is sad. Ironically, my ex-in-laws were amazing! I'm disappointed I won't get to enjoy the companionship of a MIL and DS won't get to enjoy his cousins and aunts and uncles, because we rarely see them. Normally I love having visitors and was brought up to offer the best in hospitality to people staying in our house, but I just can't bring myself to do it with her and I definitely don't ever look forward to seeing her. I know part of this is because the woman just doesn't understand the meaning of the word hospitality when it's her house but abuses it in other people's, but part of it is also that I simply can't stand her and don't want to show her my best side (childish, I know). I keep trying to remind myself that my grandmother would have insisted I be the better person and not change who I am because she's so awful, but my grandmother - sadly - isn't here to keep nagging me! In other news, it was ridiculously hot and humid again on our morning walk today. Yuck. Enough of the summer already.

I think the Pear converter thingy will be at least a couple of hundred all in, and I'd probably be able to sell the Apple for a reasonable price here given that it's only a few months old and 3,000dhs in Just Kidding. He had a much better night, thanks. I gave him the right dose of baby ibuprofen at 6 (not the dose for a six-month-old!) and he was in bed asleep by 6.15, woke once in the night and had another dose and slept until just before seven. Seems much happier in himself now, and went off for his morning nap with no fuss. Fingers crossed he's on the mend!

Is it the same as the Westbury? If so you have to remove the metal bars at each end and reposition them higher up. DH is the expert on this one but he's in Saudi, so if you can wait till Wednesday I can get him to email you instructions!

Just Kidding super-helpfully don't stock the Apple Pip Converter I need to make ours a double, and super-helpfully won't order it, so I'm weighing up whether to get someone to bring it over from the UK or sell the Apple and get a P&T. My doctor has said no unnecessary running around and feet up for the rest of it, so she's on her own. But of course she won't pay for taxis, and won't take the chance they'll get lost (neurotic is not the word), so she'll be under my feet the whole time. Ah well, I warned DH!

She came last year when I was 8 months pregnant with DS. She sat on her backside and expected me to run around after her even though I was still working full time, and she also expected to be taken around and shown the sights of Dubai even when I was exhausted. One night, when I had to work late then came home and did all the housework and cooked her dinner, she actually stood there and let me mop around her feet as she was putting a DVD into the player to watch. So yes, she is, sadly.

They did them in two days. But... the Roman blinds were rubbish. Total, utter rubbish. The guy asked me if I wanted them straight or that scalloped edge and I said straight. I was perfectly clear with that. He's gone and made them with that stupid scalloped edge and the finishing is so pathetic one of my dogs could have done better. And I think he conned me out of a load of material - he told me he needed both my curtains to make two blinds yet the guy from White House said he only needed one, and the blinds are tiny compared to the curtains which were huge. When I get the energy I'm going to take them back and try to get them fixed, with the extra material he should have!

I think there are a couple in Springs 15 - one of them has an Alsop & Alsop sign at it but turned the wrong way, so not sure if they are really marketing. The other hasn't got a sign there. Just be careful if you do end up renting from this particular company - you might like to ask them how much of a marketing fee they've built into the rental amount and if the owner is aware they're charging you more than he's asking:D.

DC - this http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/skin/roseola.html is roseola. DS has just had it and it seems to be going about - I know three others with it...His temp went up to 40c and it was not pleasant. Took him to Medcare where they gave him suppositories for the fever and (bless him) an icy wash down. Imagine the howling! I'd get yours to the docs. Hope he is well soon. So they don't get the rash until the fever breaks? He doesn't seem to have any signs of respiratory illness at the moment but a friend did say he sounded sniffly when he woke up this afternoon.

Thanks for all the input :). We went to the doctor this morning and of course, having been miserable, grumpy and hot all morning, when he got there he was chirpy and had no fever. According to the doctor he's cutting three pre-molars and has a slight throat infection, which could be left over from the tonsillitis he had last week. And that's about it. I told the doctor he'd had diarrhoea last night but not since, and the minute we got to the bank after the doctor he had explosive diarrhoea everywhere. And as soon as we got home I took his temp again and it was back up at 39.2. Then he only slept for half an hour this afternoon, when he normally sleeps for an hour and a half, and woke up crying again. Apparently I haven't been giving him a high enough dose of either Calpol or Calprofen - shows how sleep-deprived I am! I worked out his new dose a couple of weeks ago, according to his age, and for some reason decided he's six months old again. Duh. He's in bed now super-early because he's beyond shattered. I guess all I can do is keep a close eye on him and take him back to the doctor if he doesn't improve. At what temperature should I take him to the hospital if he gets worse overnight? And can I take him to Al Wasl if he doesn't have a health card?

:(. He took forever to go to sleep and only slept for an hour, whereas he normally has at least an hour and a half in the morning and three hours if he's had a restless night. And he's woken up crying, so he's clearly not had enough sleep. Off to take his temperature again...

Either of those sound like good options! Do you like toddlers?! The really ridiculous thing is that way back in March I suggested she come in April or May when I still had enough energy to take her around. DH said that was too short notice. Then I suggested she come in December so she could meet her new grandchild. No to that one too. So, I have no sympathy. I warned him she'd be bored and she will be. First moan about being bored and he's getting it with both barrels for giving in and letting her come.

Wrap up warm :D. I had the same concerns taking DS home to the UK over Christmas last year. He was a bit bigger but I was convinced he'd get hypothermia. It's a lot more work taking care of a baby in a cold country (from my experience) but he coped just fine. Do you have anyone living there with a baby you could ask? I think I called my sister every day for a week while I was packing and every day I was there to ask what to dress him in. Re the passport, I tried to find this out recently as my Dad has been very ill in the UK and I was concerned about coming back here after the summer, as I'm due in about six weeks and was worried we wouldn't be able to leave again as we'd be stuck waiting for the new baby's passport. A British friend told me she managed to get an emergency travel document valid for a year that enabled her to leave the country with her baby when her dad was ill.

Wait on my every command? Er, no. That would mean being helpful. The woman's never cooked me a meal in more than six years and has probably made me about five cups of tea and one round of toast. And p*** off and leave me in peace? I wish! Sadly we live in Al Waha and a) she'll have a panic attack if the taxi driver gets lost and b) she won't pay for taxis. Any other suggestions welcome :D.

I'm not sure if it might be the cut of them as well, but then again my jeans are from H&M too so I guess they're just ridiculously inconsistent even within their own ranges. I've given up looking at size labels since I had DS (and especially now I'm ready to pop with #2). Once the baby arrives I'm going to get back to size 10 in Next and then not look at any other size labels when I'm shopping. That was always my benchmark when I was younger - if I could get into a 10 in Next I was OK! ETA: Right now I'm really not sure who I'm kidding. Before I got pregnant with #1 I was at least 10kgs heavier than a 10 in Next, and before I got pregnant with #2 it was more like 20kgs. Medium storm (?) season starts 5th October according to the calendar in my sailing club (who've organised camping for the 7th :)) Super. MIL arrives on the 6th and I'm under strict instructions from the doctor not to lift a finger and keep my feet up. What on earth will the lovely lady do with herself for ten days?! :D

It was lovely, wasn't it? I was surprised at the really cool breeze that was coming from the land, not the sea. Oh well, I suppose my washing will dry now at least... Are you drinking enough water and avoiding things like caffeine? How's your circulation? I have no clue if the pill can contribute but I've read that cellulite is due to toxins not being flushed out and poor circulation. I've always had it since I was about 15 (and my Mum said DC, that's terrible cellulite for someone your age!) and I found Hypoxitherapy really helped before I married DH. It got rid of a load of dimpled flab around my bum, hips and thighs :D.

Re the chip, I think most - if not all - vets have those scanner things that read chips. Once you have the number, though, you'll need to call the municipality to see if it's registered with them and if not, start calling round the vets :(. This was my experience when I found a stray dog a while back, anyway. Good on you for giving the poor wee thing a home if she doesn't have one she's missed at :(.

it was a breeze at hospital lol looking after a newborn and not my 2 yr old lol. This is what I'm thinking! Normally I don't get a second to sit still when he's awake so it may well be a blissful rest! Thanks for the info on the dolls. I think that sounds like a good idea. DH is somewhat concerned we'll find his doll with its arms and legs pulled off...

I think for him this is pretty high. He's had fevers before when he's had ear infections, but I don't think he's ever felt as hot as he did yesterday and last night. I couldn't find the forehead thermometer for ages so I was just relying on how he felt to touch, but I found the forehead strip yesterday afternoon (that was what gave the 39 reading) and then the basal body temperature one I used when I was charting, so I checked it with that instead in the night. He was up at 11.15pm, just before 1am, 2ish, 3.20am, 4am and 5am then got up for the day at 6.30am :(. He'd had diarrhoea when he was up at 11ish so I checked his temp again then, and it had gone down to 37, then this morning first thing it was back to 36.8 although I did give him more Calpol and baby ibuprofen in the night. I'd love to let him sleep as much as he wants but that's the problem - he doesn't seem able to! I've just given him Calpol and put him down for his morning nap and he's still up chatting to his cot pals and having the odd yell. I'm not sure if this is because he's so ridiculously overtired from the night, or because he's not 100%. What's roseola, TwoKids? He's had a rash on his cheeks on and off for a few days now but I thought that was from teething. I'll see how he is when he wakes up from his nap (if he ever goes to sleep!) and take him back to the doctor if he's still out of sorts and hot. <em>edited by DubaiCat on 03/10/2011</em>

Well after a bit of research the Philippines government has approved a ban on household workers in Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE because of a lack of workers rights. So not sure she could even transfer to a new job anyway. But as I said earlier given what the OP has said about the family, she'd be banned anyway, Does this mean new visas won't be approved for Philipina maids?

Would they cover contacts I buy in the UK, do you think? Acuvue Moist here are 345dhs for the big box, which lasts me six weeks, but DaySoft equivalent in the UK are 360dhs for six months' supply. I wouldn't complain if that was covered by insurance! Or maybe I should get new glasses :).

Great news! Honestly, don't worry about going to the doctor even if you think it's something trivial. I'm pretty sure they understand how worrying a first pregnancy - or a difficult pregnancy - can be, and they're very sympathetic. So glad everything is OK for you!

Thanks all. I am having a planned C-section thanks to my spine problems (decision taken out of my hands = result!) so I will be in there a few days at least. I would feel much happier knowing DH's at home looking after the little guy, so I guess it's better for him to do that and for me to take full advantage of 24/7 nursing care and get as much rest as I can! A couple of friends have suggested getting him a toy baby to play with over the next few weeks, and getting one for me too, so we can both have a 'baby' and then when the real thing arrives he still has his baby while I have the newborn. Has anyone tried this?

We were watching The Tortured on Friday and a guy came in with popcorn and drink and there was only 40 minutes left of the film!! Wonder if he was a little confused! How was it? I heard about it on the radio and watched the trailer on YouTube and I don't think there's any way I could watch that film. I know it's ridiculous but I just wouldn't be able to stop thinking about DS :(.

If you do decide to reintroduce the dummy, you might find this version helpful [url=http://www.wubbanub.com/'>link[/url'>. They're much easier for baby to find in the night if they wake and need their dummy. We had problems with DS sleeping from four months to seven or eight months. We were up anywhere from four to fifteen times a night with him so I know exactly where you're coming from. The issue with us was that I'd basically taught DS he needed me and a pair of boobs to get back to sleep, and without that he simply couldn't. Perhaps your LO has learnt that she needs her dummy to get back to sleep, and can't without it? Cecile helped us immensely so I would definitely recommend her if you're thinking of trying that route. I hope you manage to resolve the situation soon, for your own sanity! PS At that age DS was sleeping at least four hours or so in the daytime, and from my research I think that's about average. From what I understand, the less quality sleep a baby gets during the day the less likely they are to sleep all night. Strange, but seems to be true. It's a challenge working out how much your own baby actually needs but once you do it's a whole lot easier to manage their sleep effectively.

If he's chipped AND registered at the municipality you have some chance of finding the owner, but if he's not registered then it's a matter of calling all the vets to see if he's one of their patients. It's such a frustrating feeling when this happens. You don't want the owners to go unpunished if they just abandoned the animal or kicked him or her out, but it's so hard to make this happen. Remember the dog in the Jebel Ali villas - that was a case for some serious retribution if ever there was one and I don't think anything ever happened :(.
