Sorry to hijack this but while we are talking books, what's a good recommendation for a sleep book , my 3 rd is due soon ,and I'm a bit rusty ( my other 2 children are 16 and 8 1/2 ) and besides I was never very successful with them anyway my DS was 2 1/2 when he slept through :(. And I really can't do the sleepless nights thing for that long at my age! I'm reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth. It makes a lot of sense to me.

Thanks - picked one up today in Mothercare. Although it's not actually a mattress topper, it's called a 'quilted mattress protector'. Think I might add the Ikea one underneath!

I had a rotten cough and cold when I was about 16 weeks and I went to my doctor, worried about my baby's health if I was sick and taking medication. His words? 'They're like little parasites in there. They'll take everything they need to survive, to the point of killing you, so don't you worry about the baby'. I know it's worrying but I'm sure your little parasite is just fine. Rest up and take care of yourself!

Are we thinking of the same thing? The mattress topper I'm thinking of attaches to the mattress and goes under the fitted sheet - is that what you're thinking of? he's 7 months so too small for a duvet but I thought a mattress topper under the sheet would be OK.

While I was home I saw a mattress topper to fit a cot bed in John Lewis. Rather stupidly I didn't buy it, but now I wish I had! Has anyone seen anything similar over here? The mattress in the cot is a bit firm and I think DS might be a bit more comfortable (read: feel more like he's in our bed) if I get one.

I think there's an old thread about this but I can't find it. I asked the consulate in Dubai a couple of years ago and they said no, but I guess it's always worth a trip to ask them. Good luck!

H3ll yes - we have whole generations of Brits who sit on their backsides and do nothing but take, take, take because they earn more on benefits than they would with a job. The coalition says they're going to tackle this but I think it'll be a job and a half now.

It's not personal if you're the one taking advantage of government rules. It is personal if you're the one who can't access government services or funding when they're overstretched. Yes, the government is to blame, but it's far easier to blame those doing the overstretching than the faceless system. It's only natural.

If you re not born in britain then you should NOT be entitled to it DH is British, born in Scotland (albeit with a Greek grandmother and an English mum). I'm British, born in England, with British parents of Scottish and Irish heritage. DS was born here because we live here. He likely won't live in the UK until he's old enough to choose to do so (or we need to go back to care for my parents). If he didn't have a British passport, though, what passport would he have?! And if he lives somewhere like the UAE in the future and has children here, what passport would they have? I used to be completely against anyone obtaining a passport purely for the benefits it brings - and I still am, if they don't contribute to the country - but I do wonder if DS should have a British passport when he wasn't born there and his only ties to the country are his parents and regular holidays there. One for the dinner table and a few bottles of wine...

He saw our GP at home when he had a rotten cough and cold and his cousin had just come down with it, and the guy did say 6 months was the ideal age to get it, if there is one!

DH eventually got him to sleep in his arms at 2am then we brought him into bed with us and he slept for a few hours. I guess he must have just been so overtired he was beyond sleep. I took him to Dr Hamzeh this morning as he had a rash all over him, but apparently this is eczema and not chicken pox. We'll have to keep an eye on him for another couple of weeks though. Will keep you posted if it is chicken pox for anyone who wants it! :D

You sound just like me. We're having awful sleep problems with DS, I've been diagnosed with PND and my confidence is at an all-time low. Feeding, playing, learning - whatever it is, I'm sure I fall far short of what super-mums are up to! But as somebody else said, there is no such thing as a super-mum. We all do our best! I'm sure you are doing wonders with your wee man. If you think his sleep is a problem, I'd suggest trying to get that sorted as I know from first-hand (and currently constant) experience, sleep deprivation makes everything a hundred million times worse. Everything looks horribly, miserably, dreadfully awful when you haven't had enough sleep and having no me-time either doesn't help at all. Big hugs to you xx

You can get foam mats from Ace to lay on the floor so if he does tip over, he won't hurt himself. Or simply lay a duvet or blanket down - we do that here at Mum's. I so hear you on the 'can't get anything done' thing, though. I am dreading being on my own again when we get back and not getting breakfast till 4pm.

Hi Dubaicat! You're back - how was the trip to the UK? I stopped BF 2 months ago, as my milk had started to diminsh when he started solids and even with expressing it did'nt help, but anyway... I dropped the 1st feed of the day and then afternoon feed and so on, as the other ladies have suggested doing it over a course of time def helps with getting them used to formula and helping with breast engorgment etc. I was quite lucky because DS took the formula quite easily and I didnt have any breast discomfort. Once he was established on formula during the day which took a couple of weeks I then took another 2 weeks or so to stop the night feeds. Take it nice and slow and it will work out better for both of you. Good luck :) edited by desertrose on 02/01/2011 We leave the UK tomorrow so we'll be back at midnight - it's been so lovely being with family and leaving is not going to be fun. I'm not sure which feed to drop first but we'll see what works. I am kind of sad about it though!

I saw a GP here who said me still feeding him might be having an effect on the PND, as my hormones will still not be back to normal, and I do seem to get worse before and during a period. He's given me Cerazette and I think it's made a bit of a difference, but he said taking the regular pill will help more so I want to try that before I look at taking anything else for it. But I'll see what Cecile says about it before I try anything. I definitely think Will has developed an association between feeding and sleeping so I'm not sure I can stop that without stopping BF :(.

DubaiCat I also want to stop breastfeeding, but I can't even get him to drink 2 oz of cow's milk. He's 10.5 months old. At the moment the little terror won't take a bottle of formula at all so I think we may have another battle on our hands! Thanks all, this sounds like a good plan. Part of the reason I want to stop feeding is that His Lordship seems to have developed an association between b00bs and sleep, so I was thinking it might be an idea to get DH to feed him a bottle of formula for his last feed before bed. However, if he won't take the bottle, am I just going to make things worse with the sleep issues we're having? ETA: How are you doing, meals?
