Marti and Babs85 - I have a friend who lives in Marinascape with her dog and apparently several ownrs/tenants have complained to the management committee about there being too many dogs in the building, so they are looking at banning any new ones. Best you check with the management committee themselves as all the security men are brand new and have only been there about two weeks.

I did the trip about six weeks ago, both ways, but was told by RTA here that there is no longer a bus from Ibn Battuta going to AD, and the bus company in AD gave me the same info for the return trip, so I ended up going from AG, which was a nuisance as I literally passed my street on the way there and back (suppose I should have asked the driver to stop there and see what he said...) Dear cheap though, I think it was about 20 dirhams each way, and very comfortable, though I was the only woman on the bus :)

Cafe au lait - have you tried ringing Al Mutannabi bookshop in Bur Dubai (opposite Burjuman mall, behind carpark). They carry all te books for the CELTA/DELTA courses that are run from universities here, and textbooks for just about everything, so definitely worth a try. Best to phone them as their website isn't always up to date (www.albatra.com). Very helpful staff there too!

Agree Cyclone T - a friend "kindly" gave me some biscotties she bought from a pre-Christmas sale at someones house in AR (don't know who made them so not casting aspersions, it was a school mums thing) and they were DISGUSTING, though of course I didn't tell her that, lol. Maybe I'm a bit OTT about hygiene, licences etc. but I have quite a delicate stomach so anything a bit dodgy reacts badly with me. I just think that anyone selling stuff that is potentially hazardous - nuts, poor hygiene, bad labelling, needs to be fully accountable to the right authorities, otherwise it is open season for anyone who can knock up a simple sponge to call themselves a baker.

Hehehe, not being a great cook I remember saying that for 1st DD's school bake sales, then I had another one and had to do it all over again, then when DD1 had first child had to do it again for playgroup - that's why I moved over here, no more bake sales for me, thank goodness!

For school fairs and bake sales, our school ensures that everything is prewrapped which helps towards the hygiene side a little bit. We also ensure that goods that are dropped off for the bake sale early are stored in a cool air conditioned room which is off limits to anything else. A school bake sale is a different thing altogether: firstly because parents are DONATING their goods to be sold for the good of school funds and secondly because the donators are all parents who belong to the school so have a vested interest in ensuring no-one suffers food poisoning after eating one of their cakes, school gossip being what it is :) Schools who run these fairs and bake sales have their own arrangements with the licensing authorities regarding regulations, usually this is organised on their behaf by the P&F. People who are selling home-made cakes at home/through party plan without bothering to be approved are running a huge risk in terms of fines for non-registration, and worse consequences if someone buys their food and gets ill!

It's fine - it's all about consequences, and for some reason boys have to take it to the line before they get the message (sexist comment, I know, but true - at all ages, including 20 :):):))

Chop up some mince, onions and mushrooms and fry, chuck in a pasta sauce (Ragu/Dolmio) and a few mixed herbs for good measure. Make up a Maggi/Knorr Bechamel sauce packet and layer in greased dish: bottom layer bechamel sauce, then lasagne sheets, then bolognaise mixture, then lasagne again, then bolognaise, then nice thick layer of bechamel sauce on top, with some grated cheese/parmesan. Shove in oven, have glass of grape, and take out when you think it looks edible. Delia eat your heart out.....

I believe some people would have a long way to fall if they went back to their home country (no maid, no fancy car, no weekly nail appts, designer this and that etc etc) /quote'> Since I have been here I have met some really lovely and genuine people, but equally some whose heads have been turned by the money and the availability of cheap labour. Maybe because I am older and don't have kids I can't be bothered with the Jimmy Choo competitions. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying enjoy it while you can and keep your feet (with or without Jimmys or Louboutins) firmly on the ground, it all turns on a sixpence.

I've never had a Timtam but an Aussie friend here told me about the "getting to sleep" trick where you bite of the ends of the biscuits and put one end in w**sk*y or b**ndy and suck it up - supposed to be the best sleeping pill on the planet. Went to Choithrams in the Greens today but no luck so if anyone spots them please post as I haven't slept well for the last 3 nights - must be the weather :)

Buy Me a Pony - If you get offered a place at JAPS, get in your car, hand in your fee cheque and dance down the road - great school, fab staff - most of whom are long-serving and QUALIFIED (ie. PGCEs have been attested - a big plus here in Dubai!) - your child will LOVE it. Don't think it's far away, it's not, just looks far on the map. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Rieker too - but I don't know where you get them here, only seen them in UK - I have plantar fascitis (sp.) and they are the only shoes that work for me

I wondered about the regulation of private tutors a while back - I don't have kids at school here (too old, lol) but it does appall me that not all teachers in schools are fully qualified andthere doesn't seem to be checks in some schools - the good ones yes, but some of the newer ones basically employ some backpackers who may have done a teaching course but haven't done the requisite year/two years under a mentor teacher in order to complete registration. I thought (and please correct me ladies) that all teachers/tutors here were required to have a police clearance, FULL teaching registration, and be assigned to a recognised school - how is it that some schools get away without meeting these requirements? When the KHDA inspectors come round do they actually check on the teachers qualifications and whether or not these have been given recognition/attested here? And on the same topic, when do the KHDA release the reports of the inspections they have just done - is it March or September?

Dropped a big bag off a couple of days ago at the bin behind the big Spinneys on Al Wasl Road - don't know if it takes anything but clothes, shoes, handbags and towels though - I think there's a list on the bin itself.

I can be "C" - twice been fined for speeding when I was at work, sitting still, but paid up as I knew it wasn't worth arguing. But I can tell you the poster who photographs car numberplates who supposedly park too close to her is still active - have seen her twice at MoE but when I'm in exit cue so couldn't stop, just told security on my way out so hope they tell her of. No idea why she is still doing this after getting so told of by other posters, just beware if you get a fine for something strange at MoE. Big blue ford (explorer?escape?) late thirties, short blondish/medium hair, bit plump. Young kids with her first time I saw her in the holidays, none second time so must be at schoolaged. Do the police here take civilian photos as evidence of anyhthing and just fine you? Unbelievable.
