If you're looking at a range of AED 150 and above for material. Check out Srour in Satwa. They have a good selection of predesigned shalwar kameez sets, i.e. formal silk or laces with embellishment on neck, sleeves and in the latest anarkali and flared cuts. Do ask them for a discount because their prices are VERY flexible. And if the owner's daughter is on the cash counter, befriend her for hefty discounts! For a tailor, I've recommended them before on EW and I'm not soliciting but I really love the work of [url=https://www.facebook.com/pages/ABs-Stitch/411182766616'>A.B's Stitch[/url'> These guys will charge you about AED 80 for a simple but beautifully tailored shalwar kameez. May charge extra for more elaborate designs. Also, for breastfeeding, my cousin always used to wear these peasant neck kameezes so that she could pull down the neck and use the dupatta as a breastfeeding cover and easily feed the baby. I fast and go to the gym and pool during Ramadan and have never been to one where it's explicitly or implicitly restricted to drink water during the fasting hours. People would frown if adults ate but there are always kids eating and drinking by the pool without any problem and ditto for adults who are only consuming water discreetly. ETA I use the residents pool and gym at Greens. <em>edited by em2san on 08/07/2011</em>

I only know the direction from Greens but it should be similar to Meadows. If you're using Al Khail to go to ACD, then: Take Al Khail road [in the Dubai direction'>. Go straight from the roundabouts. When you reach Business Bay bridge, ignore the first exit on the right for Festival City and instead take the second exit on the right for Umm Ramool. Take a right from the first lights. Take another right from the second lights. Take a left from the third lights. And come to the right most lane immediately. You will see a fuel station on the right side and a small exit after the fuel station, take the exit. You will be at ACD.

@ SemiSaudi According to Islamic tradition, we know that the women in the Prophet's family and those of his companions wore garments of loose shape and that they covered their whole bodies. But we also know that there was an injunction when they went for Hajj asking them to uncover their faces and that is why we believe that a Muslimah code of dressing should mean something that is [for the body'> loose and not transparent and that conceals the neck, arms till to the wrist bone and legs till the ankle bone. And of course, the hair. But that Islam does NOT require us to cover our faces. No where in Islamic tradition have I read that the garment should be necessarily black or in the shape of a gown. I find it interesting that you would use your European grandmother as a source for your argument. Abaya and Kandoura are cultural dresses that are affected by many factors including religion, environment, et cetera. For example, the men in this region wear a kandoura because a light colored and loose fabric provides protection from the sun and the elements of the desert without causing heat stroke or similar. And women have traditionally used the abaya as an outdoor clothing - A cloak that hangs by the door and that they throw over their everyday clothes before venturing outside. Similar to the "Chadar" worn in Afghanistan. And if you look at Arab men's clothing through the Medieval ages, they wore knee length tunics cotton pants as they provided coverage and were practical for their active lifestyle. Women wore longer and looser tunics but they also wore pants underneath. Dresses are a concept propagated in all Western and Eastern cultures where the servant class donned the practical garments and the upper class wore longer, less practical and more fancy clothing. The Islamic ruling about men dressing like women and women dressing like men is not about the type of garment they wear but about how much body is revealed and the length of hair and other factors. And as a South Asian Muslim, I am often asked why given the ruling about men and women's dress being different, why my Arab Muslim brothers wear a head piece that is so similar to a woman's Hijab. And I have explained that in this particular region, the men who traditionally worked outdoors needed to protect their heads from the harsh sun. I am also asked how a tight and elaborate Abaya is considered an Islamic item. And here is where the difference lies, an Abaya in its most infant form: loose fitting, long and non-transparent is Islamic .. But in its modern interpretation [not adopted by everyone'>, it is a cultural dress not an Islamic dress. Please do your research before making sweeping statements such as Shalwar Kameez being UnIslamic clothing. <em>edited by em2san on 05/07/2011</em>

There are two buildings for Iranian Hospital. You need to go to the one near the Satwa market, you can park at the hospital's alloted space. Go to information and they will direct you to the General Clinic. They have a Registration and Cashier counter over there. They ask for some personal details to enter in their file and charge you for one-time consultation. They have 3-4 doctors on duty at any given time so even if they are a lot of people waiting, it shouldn't take so long for your turn. But if you think you can't wait too long, talk to one of the nurses and explain what you need and she will hurry the process along. <em>edited by em2san on 12/05/2011</em>

They will give you a note advising leave on medical grounds if you go to any doctor for a consultation. If you don't want to pay too much for consultation, you can go to the GP at Iranian Hospital. But there will be no appointment and maybe a 20-40 minute wait before you are seen. When you go in for your consultation, be sure to carry medical documentation of your gall bladder removal.

Sorry, can't help with the travel mugs. But for bookmarks --- In Karama, the gift shops have metal bookmarks with a camel picture on enamel. And they have weaved bookmarks in rug patterns. Also, in Bur Dubai [near Meena Bazar'> they have papyrus bookmarks from Egypt. And online, a artist based in Dubai sells bookmarks that are prints of photographs of famous spots of Dubai.

Take out the cover and remove the battery. Look for a small white sticker. If the sticker is red, the water damage is probably irreparable. If its pink-ish or non-pure white then google "how to use rice to repair water damage in blackberry" -- worked like a charm for me!

OR can I put my UAE sim [not on roaming'> and access wifi? TIA!

:D I bought a paddling pool today, intending to fill it with balls for DS and his pals to play in. Sadly, I underestimated the number of balls needed to even half-fill the pool and it looks a bit sorry for itself with only a few kicking around the bottom! The balls were 79dhs for a bag in Toys 'R Us and you don't get that many. Has anyone seen any anywhere else? Baby Shop - MOE Fairly cheap, as far as I remember.

I know what you mean - you'd want someone to tell you, but equally it's a bit embarrassing when they do! I remember being in 6th form and walking across school grounds with my skirt tucked into my tights :\: Got lots of sniggers and finally a teacher ran over and told me. Was mortified but glad she had! What gets me here is WHITE TROUSERS. The number of women I see wearing white trousers with thongs or knickers clearly visible is amazing - my natural instinct is to go and whisper that her trousers are see-through, but I don't because I'm worried they want it to look like that and will yell at me lol :) Mall of the Emirates last week --- a woman in white trousers and NO undies .. I could see her tag and "other stuff" Quite a few of the Carrefour guards were snickering but I don't think she wanted to be warned :S

For a strand test, they take a "sample" of hair, about 1 cm wide. And they apply the color you want on it. If your hair is naturally dark, they may have to prime it using bleach or other chemicals to get the exact shade you want. A strand test helps you choose whether its the right color for you and also if your hair can withstand the chemicals. ETA -- Sorry, forgot to add. Have had my hair colored after permanent straightening but the salon suggested a herbal color because the strand test "failed" :P The herbal color was not as strong as I originally wanted but my hair's condition did not deteriorate after use <em>edited by em2san on 30/04/2011</em>

A his and her watch pair with their wedding date engraved. Or book a relaxed after-wedding photo session for the couple when they return from their honeymoon. Don't know where you could get it in Australia but I love the sterling silver key&lock sets; the lock is a pendant that comes in a chain for her and it can be unlocked by his key cufflinks. Also -- a tshirt printing shop in Dubai did something unique that I really liked -- you give them a print of the couple's pictures and they do a art-effect of the pictures and make a funky print in bright colors and print it on silk; tie for him, scarf for her.

Have to disagree. She did not comment on your choice of clothing. She noticed that you are unaware that your dress has been torn, and told you about it. Why do you have to hate Dubai for this?? Be grateful, that she cared and did not let you feel foolish when you notice it at home after a full day of mallwalking. If at a red light someone tells me that my rear lamp does not work, do you think I would hate him?? No, I would say thank you!! Crazy. Don't know what you're disagreeing about -- the OP already said that she realised her feelings were "unfair" so unless you mean that you think her resentment is fair, you are not disagreeing. And if you do think the OP's resentment is fair then the reasoning you outlined makes no sense! <em>edited by em2san on 30/04/2011</em>

When I was a teenager, I went through a phase where I wore an abaya for an 8 month period cause I thought it was the coolest fashion accessory. I was very clumsy though and it would often get caught in chair wheels, escalators and shopping cart wheels. My mum loves to stitch so she found what I thought was a genius solution. She got an abaya tailored for me that had a 5 inch satin panel on the bottom. If it tore [more of a matter of when, actually'> she just used to take out the stitches on the ruined panel and sow on a new panel. HTH <em>edited by em2san on 29/04/2011</em>

Well I've managed to get it off with some Vaseline hair oil lol! This item is now strictly relegated to 'souvenir', not 'wearable' :) Don't know how women wear them every day, would it not end up permanently dying the skin after a few years? It does look great though, very Arabian Nights :) We had to wear them for a play at school but warned by an Arab friend with nomadic roots to line them with thin cotton or other soft material because it would otherwise stain and scratch our face!

Dance classes are the best -- choose from zumba, belly dancing, salsa and more, depending on what areas you want to tone or what you're more interested in -- gyms across Dubai have so much choice. But zumba is an all-time favorite :) Don't know if its okay to mention here and don't know if you're interested but there's also a [licensed'> private instructor who teaches p*le dancing and apparently its quite fun. I could ask my friend and post her details, if you want. Also, have seen instructors teach kick boxing at the JBR beach very early in the day and it looks like a lot of *fun*

A relative rented a mannequin from a shop on Diyafah street but don't know for how much. AED 250 sounds fairly reasonable specially if you expect to use it for more than one occasion. Or if you won't be using it again, buy it now and then you can put it up for resale for AED 200 or something? Slightly off the topic, but could I have a link to your facebook page, Mahat? You can find Indian/Pakistani designs at the accessories stores in Meena Bazar. Or Arab/Iranian kind at the Sharjah souq -- in the shops in the bridge area connecting the two buildings. Also, for more modern anklets -- I remember seeing some at the artificial jewelery store in Lulu Hypermarket, Barsha on the 1st floor .. but this is last year, haven't been there recently. More recently, saw some anklets at the kiosks at Mall of the Emirates.

I always tip 10 each, even if they dont talk cuz they may just be having a bad day or worrying abt their babies at home and sumtimes I dont feel like talking either, so just add aed 20 to my cost which isnt much wen I compare the equivalent at home its like barely a half cup of coffee each. Food for thought -- many of us would do well to adopt this thought process instead of taking it personally if the person giving us service isn't being chatty and friendly

Usually, 10 for each of the ladies (mani and pedi) and 5 for the lady who do my eyebrows. I give it to them directly. In occasions such as Christmas, Easter, Me getting a bonus (which is an event to me), I either bring for them a box of good quality chocolates and sometimes I put a 100dhs in envelopes. This used to happen with the nail salon I used to go to for 4 years and I like all the ladies who work there. To me, I could have bought a new shirt or new earring or anything but some of them save money to buy a TV or a nice doll for their daughters when they go on vacation so I really think that this extra will help them in a way. I dont care how much they would have earned in their country, I wouldnt earn what I earn now if I was back home but that doesnt mean that I dont deserve the bonus (which is tips for them) after my hardwork!! *like*
