Hi I got several nice pairs from Zara. Not sure whether they still have their maternity collection though as it tends to come and go.

Well done Greenish! That is fantastic progress, you must be so pleased. DC - sounds like you're really motivated too so I'm sure it shouldn't take you too long. Remember slow and steady wins the race though and Greenish's plan sounds v sensible. I need to start thinking about weight loss too but will leave it another week or so before I step on he scales as I don't want to scare myself too much (lol). After my 1st two babies, bfing and not having help at home really helped me lose weight fast but not sure it will be enough this time. I've heard a 3rd baby is harder so we'll see how it goes. Best of luck x

Hi I am about to send my dd's passport off for renewal. I'm quite taken aback by the number of official documents which need to be included - eek! In particular, I'm apprehensive about sending my marriage cert as I'm about to have another baby and will need it for the registration. It's not actually clear to me whether I need to include it though as both my dh and I were born in the UK. The guidance notes seem to suggest that the marriage cert only needs to be sent if "the father only was born in the UK.' Does this mean that if I was born in the UK, I don't need to send it? What have other couples in our position done? If you were both born in the UK, did you include your marriage cert? Feedback most welcome. Failing that is there someone I can speak to at the consulate who could advise me? TIA x

Hi fullofdreams - that's great that you're going to the bf workshop at AW. The lady who runs it is fantastic and I'm sure you'll find it informative. In fact I used to run the monthly support group meets at AW under the banner of the same group - bfq&a. I forgot to mention that AW is officially 'Baby Friendly' - this is the intl standard for bfing. It's *very* difficult to get as it involves training *all* staff (including non-clinical e.g. admin and cleaners) on the topic of bfing. I saw a huge improvement between the births of dd1 and dd2. Apologies if I am starting to sound as if I work for AW (lol). I honestly don't but it ticks all my requirements - specialsied in maternity, high risk, non-profit, very established and so on. Frannie - thanks for posting your view too. I agree that it's not super-fancy but I guess it depends what you're looking for. And yes, I would say it's similar to an NHS hospital, only cleaner and not quite as busy. Re: private rooms - apparently the best way to get one is for your dh to request one as soon as labour is underway. For both of my dds, I was on a ward for 1 night, then had a private room thereafter. It's so much nicer and worth the extra money. Re: not having the same doctor throughout - personally this did not bother me as my priority was to have ppl who were very experienced and could handle any possible outcome. The fact that AW is *the* high risk hospital means that they have seen every possible eventuality and know how to deal with it. Everyone is different, but to me this is more important than building up a rapport with a specific individual. Anyway I hope all this info is useful - remember it's *your* baby and only you can decide what's best. Good luck x edited by EmilyG on 03/11/2011

Arrrrgh how annoying. You were very restrained imho! God knows what I would do to her in my current pg state, let along in the days following a delivery! You looked fantastic when I met you with your newborn ds and I'm sure you look great now, so don't take any notice.

Hi I forgot to add that I was actually admitted to AW earlier this week and put under observation for 24h due to dehydration. Altogether I had 3 IVs, an u/s scan and various blood and urine tests. I must have seen 5-6 doctors in total. I stayed overnight on a ward but this really wasn't an issue as it was nice and quiet. The care was great and it only cost AED360! I even had special potassium-rich meals prepared for me. I think that as I am a 'booked' patient' (i.e. have already paid the AED5k antenatal package) they are willing to provide this sort of care at a very competitive rate. Not sure how much all of that would have cost at a private hospital but am guessing it would be more than that! My mil spent 2-3 days at City hospital under observation a couple of years ago (also for dehydration, funily enough) and it cost over AED6k in total. The way I see it is that being registered at AW is a bit like an insurance policy in itself - it gives you access to excellent, specialised care at a reasonable rate should the need arise. But as I said it's a v personal choice and I'm sure you'll choose what's best for you.

Hi fullofdreams Congrats on your upcoming pregnancy, and sorry to hear you're in a bit of a dilemna. It's perfectly normal. Obviously only you can make up your mind as to where you'd like to deliver as it's a v personal decision. But re: costs... have you looked at AW? The most you would pay there would be AED17k (that's for a cs with private room) and as their cs rate is much lower than elsewhere you'd be more likely to achieve a natural delivery. I had my first 2 at AW despite having insurance, and am going back there in 4 weeks for my 3rd. Also remember you need to factor int he cost flights etc (and your dh may fly back and forth more than once). Anyway that's my 10 pence worth. Good luck x

Hi I was one of the first to register with Nicolas & Asp and completed my treatment around a year ago. They were FANTASTIC - not only in terms of professionalism but also VFM. I was overseen by Dr John Bennett who is a household name in Orthodontistry in the UK and US - he even has patents on certain braces. Not sure whether he is still there though. My treatment was for impacted canines and took 2 years. Altogether it cost about AED10k - including a minor operation. I had previously been quoted AED22k by someone on Beach Rd who assured me that the treatment would only take 1 year. This turned out to be rubbish as my case was quite complex. So I would undoubtedly have had to carry on paying for an extra year which would ahve cost a fortune. Can't recommend N&A highly enough. Good luck x

Hi we had a lovely brunch a couple of weeks ago at the Ramada Jumeirah (brand new hotel on corner of Mina Rd and Dhiyafah). It was only AED169 - must be an introductory offer - which was fantastic value.

I have been driving in Dubai for around 18 months, and passed my test here. Ironically I think this means that I am less fazed than newcomers who drove in their home countries as I am conditioned to this sort of behaviour. Having said that, I do occasionally feel intimidated - esp by tailgaters. So I tend to simply avoid driving in the righthand lane (if possible) and I *never* cause a fuss if someone flashes at me to pull over. Frustrating as it is, personally I find it safer to simply defuse the situation rather than to rise to it. I also avoid driving at night which is when most of those crazy drivers are out on the road. I should also add that hand gestures here can be very severely punished. A couple of years ago, an Australian male nurse made a rude gesture to another driver and (as far as I remember) was imprisoned for 3 months prior to deportation. Just not worth it!

Congrats Novice! Sounds like you are a very committed, affectionate mum and you will do a great job. I had similar apprehensions when pg with dd2 as I had a *very* close 1-to-1 relationship with dd1. As it turned out, it was soooo much easier than I had expected and now I am pg with no3. Enjoy your pregnancy xx

Ooops! Sorry about that Green-ish. I misread your post and assumed you were advising against a goldfish bowl, not a tank. LOL. Never mind... so far our tank is v v low maintenance which suits me :-) I will do some research online and find out more about this species! Albino cories look like goldfish but are tropical. Cheers x

Thanks for all your comments, ladies! Last weekend I followed Green-ish's advice and bought a very small aquarium... no bigger than a goldfish bowl in fact. We got 3 fish to go in it (albino corys I think). It's perfect for dd1's room so she is v happy. Only problem is... 2 of the 3 fish have already died! 1 jumped out (we have since bought a lid for the tank). Then another started to look at bit under the weather, off his food and just wallowing down at the bottom. He then started floating belly-up and that was it. Any idea what we could be doing wrong? TIA x

I went for metal as according to my ortho, they are stronger and work faster. Also, ceramic ones can get stained by tea and coffee. Granted, I had a metal mouth for 2 years but I think it was worth it.

Hi AR I'm no expert on this topic but would say based on my own experience that it's important to have a good balance of subjects - i.e. some 'sensible' ones (e.g. maths, English) and some which you dd just enjoys (e.g. in her case, art and drama). Given that the school requires her to take some traditional subjects anyway, I don't think that choosing art and drama is likely to narrow her choices down later in life. It sounds to me as though she has a good mix there. Hth x

Hi malika Sorry I am late responding to this thread but I just wanted to say that you shouldn't worry yourself too much over this. Easier said than done, I know, but in Dubai schools make a lot of money out of scaring parents into paying upfront registrations and 'panick applying' all over the place. As a result some apply to 8 or 10 schools at once and the waiting lists are totally misleading. This time last year, a friend of mine began looking for a school place for her dd in fs1 for sept 2010. Her two favourites - safa and horizon - both told her that she had virtually no chance of getting a place, but then she got offers from both. The fact is that there are more school places now than there were 3 years ago, and less kids around to fill them. So there is much less pressure. And iIt's true that certain new and/or expensive schools are easier to get into. These include Gems wellington primary, R*****, JBS and basically any schools which advertise actively. Why would they do so if they had no space? So the bottom line is... don't panic :-)
