Thanks Cymraes, Did your son go to the Marine Club at UAQ, I think they started using it late last year as one of their camps. DD is very keen to go, I missed the presentation at school, it would have been good to get to meet the guys running it.

There is no way I would just do nothing!! I would go to RERA, explain the situation then do as they advise. Always best to seek advice yourself especially with something like this as it could have a huge effect on your life if you were wrong by doing nothing! Yes definitely speak with the RC if you haven't already, but I think OP mentioned they had already done this and were aware of their rights.

We were in a similar situation last year and visited RERA for advice. First of all your landlord has to give 90 days notice for an increase, otherwise they get nothing. If you get notification then the rent is governed by the rent calculator. Secondly, once you have ascertained that you are entitled to stay and with no increase, then you do not have to open a case at the rent committee. We were advised to simply stay in the villa. And make it clear in writing that we were prepared to pay our rent on the day due. If the landlord isn't happy, then he can go to RERA and try an open a case, which our landlord tried to do and was told in no uncertain terms that we as tenants were entitled to renew at no increase. So basically do nothing. Ditto this, I was worried sick that our contract would expire and he would just rock up and turf us out. RC said that regardless of whether or not there was a new contract in the eyes of the law here, if it was renewable and we hadn't given 60 days notice to quit it would just automatically renew so not to worry. Always easier said than done I know...

Clairehdp has done it a few times, and has good advice in relation to the RC. I understand they won both of the cases they filed, I think the RC are very reasonable. Your LL is a fool...... But he will find out the costly way... Good luck and let us know how you get on.

We didn't need to log a complaint in the end. They gave us advise on our situation, and we copied them in on the emails to the LL, advising that they contact them for clarification if they could not take our word for it. We had weeks of nonsense, LL moving in, then we coukd stay but a 25% increase, then from 4 cheques to 1 cheque.... Just the mentiin of RC in the email was enough to stop them and we received a new cobtract the following week. As other pister said they are very tenant friendly, I feel for you, some LL's are terrible. Good luck. edited by emlsnre on 11/12/2012 Just keep telling them no. If they wanted to increase and it was within the RERA calculator they would have to give 90 days notice before end of contract. If it isn't due an increase then tough. If they want you to leave then they have to give you 12 months written notice, which doesn't start until the end of the current contract, so if the contract finishes in June for example and they gave you notice now, the the notice wouldn't start until June so you would effectively have 18 months notice. I know it makes you feel angry and vunerable, but don't let them bully you. Email them and just keep repeating As per UAE Law you are expecting to renew the contract. Obviously if the contract is not renewable then there is a problem. But if not stand your ground.... We have noted in every email that we would take this case to the Rent Committee, it just seemed to make their behavior worse, with the agent writing back and saying that we are trying to use the law favourably towards ourselves?!?! Long story short, old landlord sold (with no notice to us) and new landlord first wanted it for 'personal use'. He then said he will not renew unless rent is increased. Told him that he has no rights to do so. He continues arguing that rents are going up blah blah blah, agent says if we think we can get a unit for the same price we would have moved out by then (of course failing to mention the moving costs, new curtains, inconvenience of moving at short notice etc). I am incensed. DH and I are planning to renew for one more year and then buy, but they are still being difficult - 10 days away from contract expiry!!!

We have been OK with them, had pre approval for physio, MRI, had a slight problem getting emergency approval for a cosmetic surgeon, but that was crossed wires. We needed a cosmetic surgeon for the micro surgery side for daughters crushed fingers, they held up our surgery for 4 hours because they said cosmetic surgery was not covered on insurance! Got there in the end though....

We came out to have a look first, but even with that we made a mistake with the school. Dd was also at a good UK independant, as SB says you may find some comparable with results but the overall packages are very different, i.e. Level of care, teacher experience and quality, some peope come here and are thrilled with the schools. It will greatly depend on your expectations and what you are used to.

I have had a day filled with pain, too many accidents at home in one day:( I will read all replies tomorrow. Right now I have taken a high dosage of pain medication and can't concentrate. Just in response to Elmsre, I would like to say that the packs in may are too bl@@@@dy late!!!! That is the sort of thing we have to have in the beginning of the year, to work with the whole year, not 7 days to the finals! They are absolutely useless then! edited by Irooni on 19/11/2012 Absolutely, but these are the assessments that THEY are concerned with. These are just markers and carry no weight for them. It should be more evenly spread, we were given ours 2 weeks before the end of year tests, too much too late to make any real difference. I guess this is why people get in private tutors on the lead up to them..... Each to their own, but my dd is only 7 and has a whole lifetime to suffer the pressures of the world.... ETA: try not to stress over it too much and hope you feel better tomorrow edited by emlsnre on 19/11/2012

Irooni, I am not sure which school you are with, but if it is the Marble Arch one, they do not at this assessment issue revision packs. They say if you are one of those that wants to prep then you should just refer to homework that has been issued this term to brush up. It is an assessment to guauge how much your child has retained, I wouldn't be stressing over study for it. Studying for these doesn't then show a true result. However, when it comes to the May assessments they will of course issue 60/70 page revision packs. These results are more important to the school as they are used as an international result, so want them to be high so they get a good ranking. Hope that makes sense. There is no timetable, as they require some flexibility hence no schedule to issue.

Same thing happened to me. Call the person cashing, and the bank. In my case it was reversed the same day. But there was no apology, and the cheque would appear bounced if there were no funds. That is why you shoul dalways have a copy of all cheques given out Absolutely, and fortunately we did photocopy all of the cheques when signing the lease.

The 4 letter bank said they will look into it, the person who cashed it is LL and is asking for another cheque for March as he thinks we have given him 2 dated Sept. So looks like he hasn't twigged that he produced a March cheque and not a Sept one! Will ask that he returns the Sept one and we will replace it with a March one. If he cottons on that he can also bank the Sept one have no doubt he will go for it.

My father takes co codamol for back pain, he insisted on bringing it with him and wrote to MOH, they advised he needed to have a valid script for it along with a GP letter and could only bring the required amount for his stay. My MIL takes a controlled drug classed as psychotropic, again we wrote to MOH and were advised the same as my father. I wouldn't personally risk it, as you only have to get stopped by somebody on a mission and lets face it we all know how things can turn here.

Ok, that is what I had believed. Our LL is selling, but the people who have been around all seem to be under the impression we are moving out. Our lease isn't up until June, so on that basis we should still be able to stay put until June 2014. Just wondering whether LL's tell buyers that it is being sold with tenants, or if it down to the new owner to find out. We haven't mentioned anything yet as there hasn't been anybody serious, but don't want to be in a position with a new buyer that thinks they are moving in before this time.

I wouldn't consider myself naive, and am fully aware that those more fortunate than others benefit from having maids, drivers etc. But come on honestly, there are bins, these need to be emltied, so a low paid labourer has a job and is benefitting from collecting our rubbish. To just dump it rather than use a supplied bin.....? There is no excuse other than laziness and lack of respect, both for others and the environment. Whatever next, will we be having people wipe our bottoms just because we can?

I have no experiencd but these are the reasons I wouldn't buy here... Although Dubai is safe the conflicts in surrounding areas have the ability to make Dubai unstable. The laws here are not like laws in my home country, they are quite changable. From what I have seen of people who have had to deal with any kind of legal issues here, it has been very drawn out. The houses I have seen when you scratch below the surface are not great quality, and if I was spending the money that property costs here I would want something that would still be standing in 20+ years time. For the cost of buying something here, I could buy a very well built property in my home country, where I understand the law and have no concern that the laws may be changed to suit somebody else at my cost. These are just my views though, and I am sure some people who understand the region better than I will have a more positive spin on it.

I think you would find it difficult to terminate early just because you felt like a change. However, we incorporated a clause in our contract that allows 30 days notice to terminate in the event of job loss. As HCTS states most contracts will include penalty clauses, down to you with the LL to agree how these are worked.

I haven't used it for the purpose you are thinking. But have used it in the past when dd has been unwell, it contains paracetamol and diphenhydramine, the latter being the sedative part, and it was some years ago but remember that it did enable her to sleep. Not sure about it's suitability for a 1 year old though... Personally I would think very carefully before doing it, maybe see your doctor first and get some medical advice if you feel that the flight will really be that bad for the baby.
