We also do a collective class gift for teacher and assistant. This year we have got them vouchers. Many will still bring a small token gift in, a small box of chocolates, a little keyring Hallmark do lots of little teacher type gifts at this time of year.

I don't think you ever get used to 50 degree heat and the crazy humidity. You just adjust more to indoor living during the summer as you probably would at home in the winter. As for hospital, second Cymraes..... Our dd collapsed at home, we hadn't been here long and just got her in the car, dh drove I got the map and City was where we landed. They saw dh running from the car holding her, and were on it immediately, came outside to help and took her straight in. It isn't often, in fact it is the only time since being here that I wrote a letter thanking them for such a great job. So have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending the emergency at City, in the unlucky event you needed it.

I think its a really nice thing to do. I know some people that prefer people to make a donation to a specific charity rather than buy presents for the birthday child. Sometimes kids get way too much stuff and quite often its never really used. Teaches the kids a great lesson and the ones I know of have felt very proud that they have helped others less fortunate.... <em>edited by emlsnre on 22/06/2012</em>

I brought a pair of very small diamond studes for my mum last year in Cara, the stone was small but when she put them on they actually looked much bigger. She is very petite and has diddy ears though. Am fairly certain I paid somewhere between 1000 and 1200 flr them.

We were there Saturday night, it was a dry night and no entertainment, but we had a really lovely meal. Staff very attentive but not in your face, knowledgable about the meats. Food was superb, loved the asparagus and spinach sides..... Will definitely revisit.

I love my ipad too when I can get dd to release it. But for me I am looking forward to still having the ease of portability but with a real computer and not a toy. I miss having ports and flexibility of other devices. It frustrates me that there are many sites I can't use as they require flash... The ipad will still remain a favourite in our house, unlike a Windows OS the ipad is great as it stops non tech people fiddling and breaking things, but sometimes I do wish it wasn't as limited.

Hi Yes sorry, lazy morning but I did mean Positive Attitude. The Villa is about a 10min drive from AR heading In the Mirdif direction. Not too sure whereabouts Safa school is, The Villa is nearer the 66 road than AR but further away from Umm Sequim if it is that direction....

My own opinion is that the schools in Dubai are generally very good but how you view the standard depends on what you were used to in the UK...in our case our children were in the state school system and there's no doubt that the schools they are at here are way way better than what they were at before...However, those who are more used to paying for their child's education in the UK i feel will be disappointed with the standard here...This is why you hear people moaning about the schools in Dubai when they take their children back to the UK to go into private schools...Having said that, if your child has a place at a grammar school, then, if it's in a good area etc, i would take it - imo only one or two schools in Dubai could compare and waiting lists are huuuuuuge.... Just because we pay for schools here doesn't necessarily put them on a par with private/public schools in the UK. Couldn't agree more.....

Sadly the dust, heat and a/c are my arch enemies and my sinus problems have never been worse. But there are many more upsides for us living here than at home. Your kids are likely to love Dubai life, and as others have said the winter here is wonderful. I think most of us have all had the wobbles when enroute, but once here I am sure you will be fine. Our friends thought we had lost the plot when we told them we were coming here, but with a few exceptions Dubai life has been good for us, and have no regrets. Safe travels... Lol, my friends think I'm bonkers, as we only moved to the East Coast a year ago. Pretty bittersweet move, but we're leaving all of our furniture and renting the house furnished, so one less hassle, at least on this end! I'm counting on dubizzle for bargains once we get there. You can see what I wrote re sinus in my other post. My eyes are worse! I will be in serious trouble if that's a permanent thing for me there, as my eyes were dying! But, I'll be optimistic that it was just a summer thing. Are you in AR? The housing thing is probably one of the things that's causing stress - ie the uncertainty. I'm sure it'll all be fine and I'm coming out with an open mind and a positive attitude. :) An open mind and PA are the most important things to make sure you arrive with for sure. We looked at AR but opted for The Villa. AR is nice and equipped with pools, tennis etc, but all come with a premium, we compromised on facilities and went for value.

Ok, we are in a dp villa. Ours trips alot, we usually turn the auto off and then to manual to clear the air for a minute, then back to auto and it works. If he doesn't turn up let me know, DH doesn't mjnd popping over to have a quick look just in case it is easily solved.

Yes I agree with FCY... I would never have settled for the quality, it is poor. But having looked around the likes of Springs, VH, The Ranches for the money The Villa was our best compromise. And we like the open feel of the place.

I prefer the DP properties, and like the more open feel of them. Not too sure about build quality, agents seem to think DP are better and kbviously they dn't have the ehadache if the leaky pools. Spinneys has signed to come here, the latest is meant to be done next year, but you never know. Skycourts has a good little supermarket that is 5 mins drive so it is not too bad if you need to nip out for quick pint of milk.

Hi We live in a Cordoba which is the next size down from a Granada, but there isn't really a huge difference. In winter we have had bills that are 300 and height of summer 2400, our last one in was 1400. We are a family of three, I am about during the day, dh works from home at least once a week and a dd who is a TV addict! Just signed our third lease and love it. The people we have met have all been helpful and friendly, and as a newbie to Dubai this was a great choice to meet friends. Shout if there is anything else we can help with....

I got my daughter to draw a picture of her teacher, then gave it to CaN (Celine and Nora) and they have made a fab notebook using the picture as a cover. 7 years old, doing well in subjects just average at Math.... Happy Days in our house!! I really wouldn't worry, just keep his mind active while on holidays, 10 mins every days of worded math problems, keep it light and don't pile on the pressure like some parents do, poor kids get burnt out.

Thanks very much for that. I do beleive personal recomendation is very helpful. I shall check them both out. handy area of the country for us as well. Very glad you didnt faint when you saw the needle. Both DH and I have the need to urgently look elsewhere in situations like that ;-) It's weird but I find myself saying lalalalalalalalala very loudly when needles come out, very embarassing! Not a great role model :\:

Dr Peter Prouse has looked after my mum for years, she wont see anyone else. He also looked after my uncle when he was alive god bless him. Highly rated by both, and the donations from my Uncle's funeral went to his NHS department in Basingstoke. I needed a steroid shot deep into my hip for bursitis, nearly passed out when I saw it, but he was fab and I didn't feel a thing!

Hi Thanks ladies, I have only just seen your replies. There was no question regarding having it removed. It was pre cancerous, and potentially could have turned squammous. My main worry was the cancer specialists in UK say it is caused due to prolonged exposure to sunlight. However, our boy doesn't lay out at all, he is literally out and in again, walks are done after sun down. So we are expecting it to return, but hoping what they have done will be OK. It was spotted during a general dental clean actually. Again, at Nad Al Sheba, so very grateful for their attention in identifying it as a concern. Anyhow, surgery was done two weeks ago, and it is looking very good. Sorry to hear you lost yours October, and pleased for you RuthM. Its never easy especially when they are fairly young.... There are two developers at The Villa, Mazaya and Dubai Properties. All Mazayanproperties come with pools. However, I hear there have been issues with many of them. Whilst there are no shops in The Villa, there is a supermarket at Skycourts which is 5 mins in the car, there is also a beauty salon, pizza and arabic takeaway there. Living in some places in the Ranches you still need to get in your car to reach the shops, eg. If you lived in Al Reem or Hattan it would be quite a walk. We chose not to have a pool with our villa because we were unsure of the cost of running them and also the safety side having a youngish child. As I mentioned earlier, she swims at DSO and then at weekends if we want a bit of swimming we either head to the beach or choose from one of the many available day rates at hotels. They are not all crazy money. And to be honest after school and ECA's, homework we wouldn't use a community pool during the week, and at weekends are always busy with parties and the like so we wouldn't spend huge amounts of time at a pool, and when we do its nice to get out and see a variety of different places. But understand that for some the community pool is a must along with tennis. But again there are alternatives to this so doesn't cause us any issues. All depends on your budget, priorities etc. It will all fall into place. <em>edited by emlsnre on 10/06/2012</em>

Hi, Most of my firiends have been made at The Villa, and it helps that the majority also do the Repton run. So we can help out with pick up and drop offs if needed. Location wise, lots say it is in the middle of nowhere.... But for us it is the middle of everywhere, 20 mins Dubai Mall, 25 MOE, 15 Mirdiff, 20 Fest City, for us it beats the large amounts of sitting at lights and traffic further in towards the coast. The houses are much bigger for your $, but there are no facilities. Dd plays tennis at DSO, 10 mins away, swims there also, horse rides 20 mins behind the Villa, piano at The Villa, for us it is perfect. Class size this year has been 19, the cap is 22. Dd is going into Y3. There are some great teachers at Repton, sadly you don't hear about them. But there are also alot cf single, childless, young teachers that just don't get kids really, they don't have the experience. In my experience these are found mainly. in the early years, not nursery that is excellent. I do not agree with the homework, but I also only stick to the recommended 20 mins and if its not done then so be it. I feel that there are some extremely pushy parents at Repton and this drives the workload, its not how it should be but it is. If you aren't easily swayed and deeply grounded it can work for you. But totally get why it isn't right for some.

Hi Yes we are happy at the Villa, nice community feel but does lack facilities, but still it works for us. With regards to the Heads. The Senior Head who left months ago,was only ever on a year or so contract and actually stayed a little longer before heading to the US with his family. His role has been filled by the Director of Studies who has been at the school for quite a while already. The Primary Head who is very much liked by many, isn't actually leaving exactly. He is going to be working for the company who own Repton having more input into how the education works, so I see this as a positive move. I hear of talk of the overall Head departing but I think it is just talk and that he is likely to take a more hands off and more admin stance to his current role. The homework is probably under an hour, they say no more than 20mins but that isn't realistic. We often find we are trying to teach the logic of something from scratch, if it had been taught in class already it would be much quicker. If we had to move then I think we would be looking at DESS, but the class size at Repton helps us as dd has the concentration of a nat! HTH's

Hi SD. Sent you an email, thanks! It's really weird, because you hear so many conflicting things and in the end it seems you need to go with your gut. We def have spaces at GCS if we want them, and at CAS & Safa & Regents (which we never even went to, in the end.) We can also get them into Repton. Which reminds me, what have you heard about Repton? I heard mixed things, but we really liked it. Having said that, not sure it's best for our kids. There's a woman from Arizona, I think, who's going to be the new head of Primary at GCS next year. I think we'd be fine with the school, and would choose it mainly because of curriculum, though our hearts are leaning towards Safa. Like I said in another post, UAS said 'no way' are there spaces. As my DH is British, the kids are wanting to try the UK curr, which is why Safa sounds appealing, too. I wish I liked Umm Seq more, as I'd really like to be in the heart of things. We have done the burb thing, and I'm ready for more action. But, I see the appeal of kids running around safely outside with other kids. I thought the Lakes seemed like a good compromise. And I thought the Green Community was so nice, as well. Got a great vibe from it. Re traffic, isn't it the same from AR, too, or any of the communities, for that matter? Hi Sounds as though you have been busy. We live at The Villa and dd is at Repton. I don't think Repton suits all and will depend what you have been used to. Academically they are extremely driven, it feels as though it is assessment after assessment. For their age IMO I feel we get far too much homework. It is such a vast entity for us there is no personal feel to it, almost production line like, nodding dogs. However, our dd is coming into her third year there and is happy. So we have done the whole we think we should move her, but that is down to our feelings about the place and some of the staff. If she wasn't doing well and didn't enjoy it then the choice would be easy to move her. Where to I am not sure, we looked at around 8 schools initially and at that time Repton felt right. It's marmite, alot hate it, some love it. The drive from The Villa is a dream, 15 mins top, no traffic hold ups on the way, fantastic. Interestingly, we have friends that lived Green Community, there kids went there, then they moved them to Jess at AR, and they are now all at Repton and doing brilliantly. It is not an easy decision, so all the very best of luck.
