I have a love and hate relationship with the Damask tree. I love it cause it works as a great screen by my pool. And I hate it cause it sheds a lot of these round seeds and that IF not pruned regularly it will destroy anything and everything including sewage lines, pools and boundary walls. The trick is to prune, prune and prune. The more you prune the branches the less the roots will spread. So if you are like me who wants to keep the tree, just make sure your gardener doesn't let it grow too big or wide to avoid structural damage.

The ficus natida is a fast growing hardy plant - it will block of the water tank in about 4-6 months. Buy a medium sized plant (not baby). Costs around Dhs 20 - 45 each depending on size. Also plant at least 3 - 4 of them, they work as a great screen.

Light pruning can be done all year around. However, heavy pruning - where you cut the branches should be done in the winter (Dec - Feb) as it is much easier to see their true structural shape when all their leaves have fallen off so that the branches can be cut right back to give the tree better balance. The Silk tree is an exception and should be pruned in the spring as pruning it when its shedding leaves can cause severe dieback. Happy Pruning!
