Incorrect answer! You CAN NOT drive on EITHER a rental car OR a private car now as your visa is under process. You must now wait until you have your Emirates ID card in hand before you approach RTA and do your conversion. Process is: Arrival in UAE on visit visa - you can drive a RENTAL car only Once UAE visa is under process - NO DRIVING of any sort Once UAE visa is in hand - STILL NO DRIVING (previously you could convert using paper application no longer possible) Once UAE ID Card is in hand - NOW you can drive once you have converted license. HTH. I have a feeling not many know this, as a lot of people I have spoken to are still driving hire cars even though they have their UAE licenses and have been ever since they arrived.

Of trying to stuff a turkey inside one? I was peering in the freezers in the supermarket pondering how to jam it in. Head first with the a**e end hanging out  Sorry

Sorry I can't help with the crock-potting, but I now have a rather peculiar image in my head ;) On a more serious note, would it not dry out too much cooking it this way?

We could of course turn this into a TNT ;) Also now we are talking more about it being a wind up, the person concerned is posting replies to other threads. To be honest I have more going on on LinkedIn than here now.

Sorry but who would want a villa on the Palm. One road on and one road off, traffic nightmare and every time I've been around them there has always been a sewerage smell !! We're both in our late 50's have a lovely townhouse in Falcon City and live almost exactly the same life style as we did in the UK, apart from the weather of course :)

One thing to add to this. Please take out the extra insurance they offer. Just recently Aramex have been checking more parcels and I received a print from the UK, well packed in the correct cardboard tube. They managed to destroy the print by crushing the tube to get in and check it. All they had to do was open it at one end!!!!!

I hate to put a downer on this, but have you budgeted for paying deposits on things. You need a fairly large amount of cash up front apart from the rental. Deposit to the landlord, agency fees if you use one to find your place, DEWA deposit, I think around 2k for a villa. I'm only mentioning this as we came out with nothing and ended up with minus nothing once we had paid out deposits. Also the little things like buying water etc all add up. Honestly Geordieexpat I would rather have the facts than go on thinking its al easy and then find out the bitter truth !! So thank you - is really helpful having all these costs. Need to put it all in a spreadsheet today I think. Talking of costs does a credit card usually help?! Only a UAE one I think

I can't say what the properties are like in Mudon as we looked and then changed our minds. They seemed too close together for us. What I will say is, if you can, rent in a more established area to start with. When we came out over three years ago, we rented a brand new property and it was a nightmare trying to deal with a snagging list as soon as we moved in. Things aren't dealt with out here the same as they are back in the UK!

DEWA costs. We have a 3 bed villa, two adults and four pets so in the summer the AC is on around 26/27 all day and night and our maximum bill was GBP386, which included the housing fee. I definitely wouldn't say it was cheaper here than in the UK. Thanks Geordie Which area are you in? How much approx is housing fee ? We're in Falcon City, just along the 311 from AR. And someone else has just answered the other part of your question about the housing fee :)

You can get a 4 bed for as little as 170k depending on which style you prefer. On a good run I can get to DSO in 15 minutes, so that's avoiding work and school times.

We've been here since June and love it. The Community Centre is due to open next month fingers crossed, where there will be a small supermarket, coffee shop, health clinic etc. Phase 1 is all completed and looks lovely, phase 2 is getting there, but bearing in mind we were one of the fist people in there and it was the summer they haven't managed to finish our landscaping yet, but they are getting on with it. There is a small shopping centre at The Villa which is about 5 minutes away. A larger one at DSO and then Mirdif City Centre which is only about 15/20 minutes down the road. To be honest we hope we can spend the next few years here until we have to leave Dubai.

All I can suggest is that you turn all your water off and then go and check the meter over a space of time to see if it is still turning. if it is I would think that you have an underground leak somewhere.

Sorry but there's no way I would pay this fee as it is just a money making scheme. Is your LL aware of what they are doing? There was an article to the Lawyers that write for the National newspaper See below ( 2014) note the part where RERA said it is illegal to do so It is common practice for agents to charge a fee when doing a renewal. The renewal will involve work on the agent’s part, for example negotiations with the landlord and tenant, producing the new contract, getting signatures and collecting and distributing rental cheques and so on. The charge for this can vary from Dh500 to Dh1,500 depending on certain circumstances. I am aware that Rera has said it is illegal to charge renewal fees, but this is a commercial agreement between landlord and or tenant and if either of these parties request the services of the agent they are expected to be paid for such work. In theory the cost should be paid equally by both parties as both will be benefiting from the “transaction” but this is down to pure negotiation as to who actually pays this fee. Thanks SL :) I had a feeling that it was illegal for agents to charge. I was told that they can charge a nominal fee for the preparation.

We're hoping next month, but I think one shops has opened already. Personally we love living there, but as with all new builds, Phase 2 has it's fair share of teething problems, although they are cracking on with the landscaping. Phase 1 is all finished and looks really nice.

There is no need to use the agent every time you renew. The contracts are readily available and you can do it direct with your LL. If there do insist on renewing for you, I believe the cost is usually no more than AED200

I'm showing my age here, but when I was younger we had a hollowed out turnip, no pumpkins, with the candle in. We used to put them on peoples walls or doorsteps, ring the bell and hide :) I don't think we ever got much more than shouted at.

Make sure he is well used to his travelling crate long before he actually flies. Unfortunately there is nothing you cn do for him during the flight itself apart from ensure that his water container contains ice and not water so it has the chance to melt while he is travelling. Our dogs came out in May and they had a month or so to start to adjust before it got really warm. To be honest as long as you don;t take them out in the heat of the day they'll probably be fine.

How was the Thunder parade? Unfortunately missed that this year, but if it stays at the Autodrome we certainly won't be back. As I said previously there were a lot less manufacturers there this year and in previous years at Media City you could sit on the grass and chill while you watched what was going on around you. Not a chance there as it was all hardstanding. It all seemed very small compared to previous years.

What awful, awful replies! Not going to be there for 8 hours? No, but they'll be going from house to house doing their job for 12 hours - with NO public toilet facilities - so where exactly to you expect them to go? These are NOT part-time workers, they are FULL time workers, that just happen to work part-time for various people! Going in the bushes is natural for them? Please get off your high horse, get out your ivory tower and join the HUMAN race. Shameful comments. I completely agree. He's a human being not an animal !!!!! Personally I feel the OPs problem is the fact he turns up every day and not the two days he is meant to be there.
