I don't understand - why would she come to your house to tell you this? Surely having already been fired from her job she is aware how precarious her situation is in this country? I agree with Izzy - since your husband has decided he wants nothing more to do with his family then it's perhaps time the Old Bill stepped in. That would wipe the smile off this woman's face. Sending you love and hugs OP - a truly dreadful situation x agreed get what you can, get out and drop them both in their own mess! Totally agree. Are you sure she's pregnant and not just saying it ? that is awesome busybee2..i keep telling my DH that driving in AD will cause me to get high blood pressure someday.. it's really bad.. some people really need to learn to drive and be patient.. its really bad in dxb too! when i speak with people from dxb they always complain that the ad drivers are worse... when in fact its not they are all as bad as each other... a lot of drivers in auh drive dxb plated cars, this is because they have to because thats where there visas are from, and the same vice versa in dxb people moan about ad plated cars, when in fact they live and work in dxb but just drive cars with ad plates etc..... You're right, i guess it's bad everywhere.. i think it is because i am used to DXB and Sharjah since i lived there all my life. i moved to AD 3 years ago and still find it hard. the roads are different i guess. or thats what i think.. i just hope it gets better everywhere and people are not always in a rush to get to their place.. it really is different. a family friend just lost his life on weds because he was driving really fast and lost control of the car and hit a pole.. he flew off the car and died immediately his mother is in ICU and his 6 month old is in critical condition.. non were wearing the seat belt nor was the baby in a car seat.. these things should really be enforced but i don't see it happen.. i know a lot of people who don't put their babies in car seats and they dont wear belts and drive recklessly.. WHY?? Sorry to hear about your family friend - really sad :( I find it quite ironic when I find people driving with a big 'baby on board' sticker on the car and no car seat!! The other day a women pulled out in front of me from a side street, I had to slam the brakes on - yep, big "baby on board" sticker. Yes big "baby on board" sticker obviously has the same effect as driving recklessly with hazard warning lights on. Invisible force field protects car and occupants.

Please also, especially in this colder weather, always try and check under car bonnets and wheel arches before you drive off, as cats and kittens tend to sleep there to keep warm.

I don't think I have high expectations. I apply for entry level positions and roles as well as more senior level roles. I know you'll think this quite silly, but do you use the same CV all the time? The main part of mine is the same detailing previous roles, but the initial profile at the very beginning changes for every role, just like my cover letters do. That means I can 'dumb it down' for the less senior roles.

To be totally honest I love Desert Palm, but if I was looking for a special High Tea I honestly wouldn't go there. Yes it's a lovely place, surrounding are great and is the service, but from what I've seen and heard most people go to combine it with the Polo and through Lime & Tonic the stable tour. Dinner at Rare or the friday brunch, now those are things I would definitely say to go for :) <em>edited by Geordie expat on 07/01/2014</em>

Thanks for the replies - we have already done the Park Hyatt before (loved it and wanted to go back) and Al Qasr, Burj al Arab etc. I was looking for one more in the area between Dubai Mall and Mirdif if you get what I mean ! Desert Palm when I looked at it it was fruit, cake and scones no sandwiches ?! No it is also sandwiches

Had planned the Park Hyatt but was worried about the 'fall'out of people after the brunch as we like to go to The Terrace for cocktails I think you will be fine, not that "kind" of brunch and we've been to after brunch drinks at Terrace and it was lovely. Heard mixed reviews that they portions were small. Have you considered the High Tea watching the Polo at Desert Palm? I can highly recommend that with or without bubbles :)

I'm so glad to find this site and all the wonderful ladies here. I've been here in Dubai for 4 months and have been actively looking for work with no success. I came here as my husbands work was transferred here and left a highly paid career but have been sitting at home not being able to find anything. I have a degree in computer science, have over 16 years in management and leadership in customer service and support for many major companies. I'm from Vancouver Canada. I have my residency visa and all but somehow I'm unable to land even a single interview. I've applied through dubizzle, gulf talent, linkedin and every other agency. What am I doing wrong? I have worked my whole life since I was 14 and just can't sit at home as it will make me so depressed. Please help me shed some lights? Lower your expectations and you will get a job. You have no middle east experience so you have to start at a lower ranking position and work your way up again. The IT market here is saturated. Loads of people from India who will take a job for lower salary even if they are over qualified just to live here. Lowering my expectations has at least got me some temp work, so I can now say I have UAE work experience.

All I can do is totally agree with the previous poster. They are really good and if you need a car for a specific time they are the only way to go. The stress free pick up and travel is worth a little extra cash :)

Can I just ask on top of all this. If Dubai is building all they plan to for Expo and it's not going to impact on the main downtown areas. How are they going to cope with all the extra traffic this will bring? Has anyone heard if the Metro line will be extended to cover some of this?

How does it work in countries where people don't live next to the metro stations yet use the tube etc to commute almost everywhere to the point where it's the primary mode of transport, wonder why it's not like that here? Lack of buses from outlying places, maybe to Metro stations. Also when DH tried using the Metro to go to work, he had similar issues, as there were many more going in the opposite direction (towards Jebel Ali) at peak times. As Madge said it can take such a lot longer to try and commute by Metro, and for most of us the working day is long enough without having to add an hour or so on to each end.

Some of it. Not much of it. Look at the Metro; given the actual location of the stations, unless you live right next door to a station and the place you're going to is also right next door to a station, it's still much more convenient to drive, and that goes quadruple in summer. That is one of the issues here. Majority of people drive everywhere, as you say the Metro stations are great if you live right next to them, but for others they are always a drive away and so obviously people feel that once they're in the car they might as well drive the whole way.

Just traffic mayhem? Safety and security? Really? Have you read what people actually went through on the Palm that night? It sounded like a zombie riot movie! People blocking the paths of buses and forcing themselves on, making them totally over crowded, fights, pushing shoving, many were injured. People urinating and vomiting everywhere. Reading some accounts, I'm glad I was nowhere near any of that. Yes, it sounds awful, I wouldn't go near there on NYE and I feel sorry for those caught up in it. I've just been reading about a teenage fighting for his life in Sydney after an unprovoked attack in Kings Cross on NYE. The police have been talking about the appalling behaviour of some people, it doesn't just happen here. I've been caught up in awful NYE 'celebrations' in a NZ holiday hotspot with rampaging people and bottles being hurled at police. None of this means those countries aren't capable of holding world class events. I don't mean disrespect to anyone here and I also apply it to myself but what happened is a big talking point in our small lives. It doesn't mean that Dubai can't manage anything and that it can't host a great Expo. edited by Daza on 02/01/2014 I'm sure Dubai will hold a great Expo all I was trying to say is that I hope that a few lessons have been learned from NYE. As they say "from small acorns....."

I think you may be surprised at what will filter out. If Dubai can't manage one night, which supposedly has been orgainsed for a while, how will they manage the influx of people and cars over a period of six months. And yes I know we have a few years to get ready for this, but..... How do you know what Dubai managed on that night ? Just because there was traffic mayhem, you should be thankful that this is all that you have to complain about. I won't touch on details, but Dubai worked very hard to ensure the safety of its residents was maintained to the highest degree. Just because a lot of other things did not go wrong is not about chance, it was down to sheer hard work. All I'm saying is that traffic mayhem, may just have been the start. Yes the safety of residents was taken into account and I have no doubt that everyone worked hard to provide this. All I was saying is that the issues which arose will always filter out and make people wonder why if all this was promised, bus lanes etc why it never happened. I just hope that some lessons are learned from this and it's all taken into account next time a big event takes place.

All the reports I've seen all over the world have highlighted the fantastic fireworks, there has been no coverage of what is being discussed on here. I haven't heard any stories of near riots from the Downtown area, it all seems to have gone off really well there. Heavy traffic of course but that is to be expected. The problem seems to have been the Palm, especially for concert goers. I honestly don't think that anyone with any sort of clout with Expo is going to be reading EW or dedicated facebook pages and saying 'well they messed that up, better keep a close eye on Expo preparations'. On the contrary, I think they are more likely to be looking at the incredible show that Downtown put on and thinking the right choice was made. I'm quite willing to concede I could be totally wrong and they are all quaking in their boots :) I think you may be surprised at what will filter out. The Rixos is very nice and the food at a la Turc is an international buffet with some Turkish specialities, including Turkish ice cream. We went there for Eid. Emily, I hope you get at least half your money back. That sounds just our sort of place, wish I had the money :(hope the New Year brings you all you wish for. I've never seen a woman get upset when offered a seat or had a door held open for her. Does this really happen or is it one of those urban myths that tries to justify declining courtesy. Bearing in mind the natural phenomena that occurs with every passing year that "things were better in them thar days". I remember about 20 years ago a women calling my father a male chauvinist *** for holding a door open for her. Only example I can think of though! There's always one :) I wonder what she would have said/done if he had let it go in her face?

I kind of don't mind the rush hour thing, as that happens the world over. Although here rush hour seems to last a lot longer ;) It's when the trains aren't really that packed and it's mainly men sitting down. Not that long ago I was coming home laden with shopping and I made a move to get a seat that someone was leaving. I was nearly flattened in the rush and they were all male and majority of them young enough to be my son. Even giving filthy looks had no effect, they just put their heads down and sat there. I'm obviously doing something wrong as I can count on one finger the number of times I have been offered a seat :(

Wow, I thought that you were announcing! I don't even recall them doing a sale during DSF in previous years. We shall hold our breath then. :( I find the VS sales online with shipping much cheaper than the Dubai VS sales. Is, I won't be ever ordering from VS, unless they have a super good deal. al. Strange. I placed my very first order on Black Friday and had an excellent experience. So much so that DH has barred me from the site for the immediate future ;) Barred from the VS site but not from the shop;-) you've got space to manoeuvre there! I felt sorry for dd last Christmas as she spent a lot of her pocket money buying us lovely VS gift sets only to see them at half price in the sale. Yes, may pay a sneaky visit. Just to see if the sales are on of course ;)

Bath & Body Works does this awesome "Yellow" sale where they sell everything at 50-75% off. I am addicted to some of their scents and always stock up during the big sale. Plus I want to try out some of their other lines so this seems like a good time to do it. Victoria's Secret does this semin-annual sale and I was looking forward to it. I remember in July-August, they were selling their bras for AED 59. A few days later, they had "further reductions" with bras starting at AED 75! :P Either way, I need to buy some more bras as my size has changed drastically over the past year and seems like this is the perfect time to stock up. The sales ladies at VS told me that sale will be starting soon back in the last week of November and I have been waiting ever since :( I find the VS sales online with shipping much cheaper than the Dubai VS sales. I did place an online order during the Black Friday event and lets just say that my experience wasn't the best. Thus, I won't be ever ordering from VS, unless they have a super good deal. On the other hand, I had a much better experience with La Senza. Got 3 bras and 10 panties for about AED 280 including delivery which I think was a pretty good deal. Strange. I placed my very first order on Black Friday and had an excellent experience. So much so that DH has barred me from the site for the immediate future ;)

We got passes for our friends, but now our friends have dropped out coz no one wants to head out to our place at 8:00pm :-( That is such a shame. I would have thought that the Palm would have been the place most people wanted to be on NYE, especially with friends.

hmmmm. must just be me then!! No me too and I'm one of the people who also always gives up her seat to pregnant and elderly passengers on the Metro (that's if I ever manage to get one :) ) and holds the doors open for the person coming through behind me

Down near Toy Store. If you went through the entrance there (I think Gloria Jeans is there too) you would come to the main walk and turn left. It is up about 20metres on your left. You get one set of straps with each sole. One warning I will give though is when you do go for new straps to take your sandals with you as the sizes can vary slightly depending on the material of the strap.

I haven't seen shoes like you describe, but Galibelle have a stand in Festival City. http://galibelleuk.com/about-galibelle.html They've moved to the main stretch towards Toys R Us now. I've got one pair of shoes so far and various different tops and it definitely saves money :) They're also in Ibn Battuta now too

Also had a 6 month rental cheque bounce. If you e had that happen, you'd understand why a single cheque is preferred by Lls So what makes Dubai landlords so different to landlords in most other countries that they are unable to cope with monthly rent payments? If you were a LL in any country in the developed world, you'd be taking monthly rent payments, regardless of whether your tenant was an expat or a local. If you tried to enforce single-cheque payment, you'd be laughed at for your sheer cheek. The system of large lump sums paid in advance is a significant obstruction to the development and modernisation of the real estate market here. If you're not part of the solution - the solution being a general move towards monthly payments becoming the standard - then you're part of the problem. So surely it's easier if a one month cheque bounces, rather than a six month cheque. Less money to chase up and perhaps easier to enforce.

Hi, we have exactly the same situation, only difference is we have more time (end of Feb) but Landlord reacts exactly the same. No, no and no. Very stubborn. I hope that some landlords will not find any new tenants once they got the old out with this behavior. Geordie: They just went with what they had and got the new contract? No hassle with translation of old contract to Arabic and opening case? Not as far as I am aware, as all contracts are in English. Unfortunately they're travelling over the hols otherwise I would have been able to check.

One of the other things is that in most other countries the deposit is kept in a separate account and the LL isn't able to get his/her hands on it, unless there is some issue when the place is vacated. A Rancher you are probably one of the few LLs who it would be a pleasure to rent from. Unfortunately it is the others who give the likes of you a bad name. Mind the same can probably be said back in our own countries.

I haven't, but I know of someone who did. They went and explained the situation, took their old contract and the same amount of cheques for the following 12 months and were issued with a new contract exactly the same as the old one.
