Good question GE - my point is that there are lots of judgmental pointy fingers on this thread and I honestly don't think that's fair - so many factors come into play. Plus technically only a split second to decide whether to stop or continue and take into context the situation you are in / road conditions. I've said my piece on the matter but want to demonstrate this is a horrible situation and OP I think you dealt with it admirably and humanely. Completely agree TDB. I honestly wouldn't know how to react unless it ever unfortunately happened to me. There would be so much to consider, especially the way people drive out here.

the OP's question raises a valid issue - what does one do in the case of hitting a stray? Another question. How do you know it's a stray you've hit and not someone's pet? Until it's taken to a vet to be checked. Well all pets wear municipality tags, as per the law. Yes ours all do, but cats have an awful habit of losing collars.

I would say, as long as you can explain why you've been out of the workplace for x number of years, and you certainly can. No problems. I would suggest you brush up on your skills, whatever they are and get up to speed with your line of work. Things advance very quickly, even in 6 years. :)

Don't hold your breath! Been here 6 months, on DH sponsorship, had too many interviews to count and still looking. Applied for jobs I'm qualified for and over qualified for. PA / Admin work is very hard to come by, unless you can afford to work for less than 5000 AED a month.

Yes, UAE residents (and non residents of UK) are entitled to tax allowance (believe it's 6000pounds) on rental income in UK Not quite sure what you mean here. I am a British and working in the UAE. I am non resident in the UK for tax purposes and under those circumstances there is no longer an entitlement to a personal allowance, for any purpose. The law was changed in April 2011 and thus applies to all tax returns from 2011/12 onwards. If you have received rental income it is now all taxable. See HMRC website for confirmation, or ask your accountant. I don't think this can be correct: there is a tax free allowance of 7475 on my tax return calculation document that I was sent by the Inland Revenue in July of this year for tax year 2011/12. The personal allowance relates to income earned in the UK eg rental income or interest on UK based savings. The address on my return is my Dubai one. I am checking this out again. Our UK accountant has definitely not allowed us to claim a personal allowance for 2011/12. We queried it just a month ago and it was something to do with the fact that there is no double taxation agreement between UK and UAE, so HMRC have withdrawn the personal allowance in those countries where the agreement doesnt exist? You're fine as long as the money was earned in the UK, e.g. pensions, rental from property etc.

And the case for the emergency services is a sensible one except that it could lead to precious time being wasted looking for a child that wasn't ever in the car.... Hence, if there isn't a child in the car, the sticker should be removed. yeah but who actually does? PL is right - the worst drivers are those with these silly signs and then 3 kids all jumping around not strapped in. I am going to not buy one as I would like to think my driving won't change with a baby in the car (I will not be more careful / reckless depending on whether she is with me or not). And why would I presume anyone else cares if I have a baby with me or not? People are too selfish to drive considerately or strap in their own kids, why would they care if I have a child in my car? I would still have one, as just in case the worst happens and the emergency services don't think to look for a baby or child. There have been cases where the baby seat has been thrown out of the car and not found for some time. I do agree with taking it out when you are on your own though.

Did I not read somewhere in the article that he boarded the plane looking for a toilet !!! Yeh right. I suppose there were none in the shopping centre or airport. Sorry but yes the security staff may have been a little lax, but majority of the blame lies with the mother and son.

I'm seriously not trying to put you off getting married in the UK or Gretna, but that's just as much a hassle and the notice of intention time is even longer. OP I really would contact the direct.gov website, before you go any further

Oh no, does the same ttime scale apply for a civil ceremony in say a country estate/hotel in the UK (not a registry office). I was told we have to be resident in the UK 7 days before, so we are getting married at a country estate on the 8th day. No one said anything about notice of intentions etc. Also only I am British, hubby-to-be is not! Check this link http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Marriagesandcivilpartnerships/DG_175715 I would have hoped that the people helping you organise your wedding would have all this in hand.

I don't want to sound awful, but is there anywhere that does Christmas lunch without all the kids stuff? We've done all the kids Christmas's and they have now grown up and long flown the home and we won't be seeing them over the holidays. We would really love to to go somewhere to celebrate but without the fuss. Apologies to all of you who love it with the kids, but eventually there does sometimes come a time when it's just the two of you.

My friend was looking at doing a quick registry office thing in the UK but there is no such thing anymore. I don't know the exact details but she would have had to be in the UK for over a month just to have a registry office ceremony - you definitely can't just fly in and out, whereas me and DH were in Cyprus for 48 hours! [b'>DH and I got married just before he came out here to work, so it was easier for me to join him. The minimum time allowed in the UK is 4 weeks, 'cause even if it's a registry office, the banns (notice if intention) have to be given no less than 16 days in advance. You also need to reside in the UK at least 7 days before that. For me it's a no brainer. Cyprus :)[/b'> edited by Geordie expat on 08/10/2012

Thanks! My DD has had Lyme Disease so I'm a little freaked out by ticks and very wary of them. My cats used to get them in the UK all the time but I haven't see any on them here or on my dog. I'll keep an eye on them though. Is there a particular tick "season"? TIA Majority of the good treatments for animals out here should help with this.

I soak in Napisan or Vanish. If you have enough shirts I would leave it to soak for several days. I have soaked stubborn stains up to a week. I never do a really hot wash as I find it sets the stain. [b'>Very true[/b'>Drying outside in the bright sunlight also helps to whiten garments. Also if you can get the stain into cold water as soon as possible that helps. Although I know that can be hard to do out here !!

What i find behind many of such ads and preferences is not exactly racism, but an alarmingly high level of massive incorrect generalizations based on "nationality". You have some instances where you can understand preferences; like wanting a chef for his country's cuisine, or maybe a supervisor from the same country as technicians under him. But many weird permutations that you see often does not make sense; "Filipinos/Indians only", "westerners only", "South Africans/Australia/NZ only" and so on. In this case, what can a Filipino or Indian do that other Asians can not? I'm so not racist, but when I see the above in an advert, it lets me know that they are only prepared to pay a low salary and expect certain nationalities to accept this. IMHO

I prefer blatantly being told why I did not get a job or knowing not to apply rather than being interviewed and told I didn't get the job because I lack experience or am not the right person. I did get told that not so long ago. The person who would have been my boss wanted to employ me, but their boss said they had to have someone younger.:\: Was that here or in the Ukay? Here. I found the UK to be more discreet about my age :)

Hi Firstly good luck with your move and welcome when you eventually get here. We were lazy and used a company in the UK called 'Pets Travel with Passports' who helped and guided us through everything. We also used Dubai Kennels and Cattery for the import at this end, again they were exceptional. There's also the DEFRA website which tells you what vaccinations etc you need, but as he's only just come from the US I guess they'll be all up to date. We did move 3 cats and 2 dogs mind, so I think it would be much easier with only the one pet. You could always contact these people and get some advice before you make a decision. We've been here 3 months and really like it. Lovely large villas and gardens, quiet and there's a decent shopping centre five mins away at the Springs. There's also a fitness first there and you can join the club at Jumeirah Islands for a reduced rate. I agree about the lack of street names, but I haven't had too many problems with taxi drivers - yet!! Yes all the white goods are included and if you're away from the pylons you wouldn't know they were there. Same goes for having to busy roads nearby, we hardly ever hear them. I love the fact that I don't feel that far out and can get to a Metro in around 10/15 mins and with a car MoE is less than half an hour.

I think there are problems with Northern Cyprus after the invasion. Original owners fled to the South and their properties sold on. Now the European court has said they have to be given back. I wouldn't buy in the North until the whole matter is cleared up. We have a number of friends living their, or own properties there. As long as you buy a property with a TRNC freehold and deal with a reputable agent and solicitor, of which there are many, it's a fantastic way to get a lovely property for not a lot.

I just mean they must be offshore private pensions, not based in the UK. Otherwise when taking the pension money you will need to pay tax on the "earnings" as such! My DH is receiving a small services pension through the UK and pays tax on it.
