[b'>hiccup -[/b'> I agree. However it's not just about this song. It's about songs of this nature generally being played on the radio, especially during certain hours when kids are more likely to hear it. They should just bring Radio Disney over here and we can be done with it! [b'> jay14 -[/b'> I definitely agree with you about objectifying women and I take it as far as treating women differently then men. I absolutely abhor when PE teachers use the term "girl pushups." I told my son that they are modified pushups and he should tell his teacher that. How about the boys who can't do traditional pushups, how bad it is for them socially and psychologically to be teased about having to do "girl pushups." It's the little things that we brush off as no big deal that get told to our sons and daughters throughout life that makes them separate and classify each other differently. Right now it's boys can do pushups and girls can ONLY do girl pushups. When they grow up, there are certain jobs for men (high level executives, technology, police, fire fighters, etc) and even when women get in these jobs they are paid less because they are thought of as inferior. [b'> Daza -[/b'> Blurred lines are exactly what they say. I'm sure most people use that term in their daily life to mean when 2 seemingly different things run across each other making the situation confusing or more complicated than it should be.

Just to clarify, the Robin Thicke song isn't about rape...when TI raps the part about giving her something that will tear her .... in two...he's boasting about his *ahem* size. I don't think it's possible for any of us to clarify the point definitively whether it is or isn't about rape. In all likelihood the meaning of the song (especially the title) was designed to be ambiguous in order to court controversy and garner publicity. It's very possible. It may be shocking to people who haven't been around this type of lifestyle (ie urban setting, hip hop, down south, etc) but for those of us who have, then you can understand what he is saying based on the slang he uses. There's not one word of slang in that song that I haven't heard in my personal life while growing up. I've read and re-read the lyrics ... there's nothing remotely rape related in them. "I know you want it" --- that's what d-bags tell themselves because they are self-centered, not because they'd rape someone! Talking about grabbing a girl's hair while they engage in intercourse...well for some people that's part of normal intercourse. It's distasteful and doesn't belong on the radio without proper editing. YES. But let's not go overboard and say it promotes rape, because it doesn't. That's a ridiculous notion made by people who don't understand hip-hop music/lifestyle.

I'm all for artistic freedom and freedom of speech, however I don't think this song be on the radio without editing since it's broadcast to everyone of all ages. Yes I can turn it off and I do. However, record companies should do a better job of making "clean" or "radio" versions of songs. Simply beeping out one word isn't enough, there's something called context! Also, back in the day, when radio DJs were actual DJs not just personalities...they would also mix the song so it would skip over the bad words. By the way, there are worse songs on the radio. I'm sure you've heard Soulja Boy "Crank That" --- look up what "superman" means --- it was consistently on the radio the last 2 years and it made me sick to hear kids singing "superman that whooooaaa" even though they probably didn't know what it actually meant. How about that suuuper catchy song, "Whistle Song." Have you seen those lyrics? I've heard kids singing that song over and over. Point being, parents should just be upfront with kids and tell them that these songs are inappropriate for them and then switch the channel.

I guess I'm not explaining myself clearly. I meant to say that I wonder if the parents of the child receiving the gift thinks I should be spending more on a present just because it's hosted at a certain place. I wonder if THEY think it's offensive or me being cheap if I don't buy a present worth at least the same amount of the cost of the party (per child). It is just something that I've thought about. Guess I'm the only one though! LOL

I didn't realize that International City was a freezone. Are there different rules if you work for a company based there? Ie visa laws or renting an apartment? Sorry to hijack your thread but this is one of the most original threads I've seen on EW. :)

Hi Piggle at this age I wouldn't push him to do anything competitive. Especially since he is shy, let him continue to do things he likes so he can build confidence. It doesn't matter if he is poised to be the next Neymar or Messi right now...just be glad that he is an active kid!

There is a league at Uptown Mirdif School. I don't know about it personally but an acquaintance of mine goes to it. I'll have to rack my brain to come up with the name though...

I would think around 100 dhs is the max. Sometimes I wonder if the price of the gift shouldn't be less the cost of the party per child. But then again it's not like I had anything to do with the parent choosing Ski Dubai vs. a home party. So why should I change how much I spend based on that.

Ecochic's recipes are similar to the one's I have found. I'll look for the body wash one, my computer crashed and I hadn't saved it! Also from what I've read your hair might take a couple weeks to adjust to your new routine so it might be more or less oily than "normal." Also you can play around with the ratio of bicarb to water and apple cider vinegar to water. Depending on the thickness of your hair and such. Give it enough time to adjust properly!

Simoralu44 - I think people use the term RERA and Rent Committee to mean the same thing. Even though they are technically separate, the Rent Committee is a part of RERA (isn't it??). But yes, technically everything you said is true. I think that people on this forum use RERA cause it's easier to type than Rent Committee. And to add on to ecochic's statement, if your lease contract isn't registered with Ejari, you can do it in person (but not online). Not sure how accurate it is, but this site has info on what you need in order to register the contract in person. http://www.paynocommission.com/pnc/blog/how-to-avoid-rent-scams-in-dubai/

Hi KH. I totally agree. If a child is excited about something, then why not encourage it by joining a football academy. I just wanted to be honest about the competitive skill level, which does not come close to what it was in the US. If it's just an extra opportunity to play, then go for it if you can afford it! I think it's just soo expensive, but it's the 1 thing my son wants to do all day, every day. :D But if it's a matter of serious training, I don't think any football academy in Dubai is at the level of international clubs in the major football centres (ie Spain). It's not like you are recruited and go up the ranks in hopes of joining a national team. That's serious training to me. Here it's like most of the other ECAs, a money-making venture. We looked at the Barcelona academy but got mixed reviews about it. I did love the fact that they arrange a trip to Barcelona. What an experience!

Hi Piggle, I think it really depends on the child's age and how good he really is. There are football academies and I've had my son in 2 of them here. In my opinion, they aren't like what we call "club" or "traveling" teams back home which are highly competitive and meant to develop superstar athletes. I hope you get what I mean by this?

A quick update! My maid went to the POLO office to get her travel papers and they confirmed she would have no problem coming back to the UAE as long as there was 1 day of validity on her visa. :)

Hi egg and Fiat500. Thanks for your replies. I thought so, but you know how there are rules for certain nationalities or job titles and then there are the actual rules. ;) She's definitely going to get the POLO papers before she goes so that she doesn't have any trouble leaving Philippines. Thanks again!

Have you ever though of selling it yourself? Not too sure what it's like here but back home sell by owner is very popular and effective. Plus you get to save on commission fees to the agent. Agents are much more proactive back home than they are here, so if I ever owned a home here I would definitely go that route. Good luck!

Hi Heyjude and Sleepy, thank you for your feedback as well. I'm glad to hear both positive and negative feedback. I know everyone's experiences can't be the same. Actually would be kind of worried if I only got positive reviews because they may not be genuine (ie the school is actually the one responding under the guise of a username!). Does anyone have any experience with their Learning Support program? It is my understanding that if a child is starting to fall behind in a subject they can get help a couple times a week? To be honest, I am leaning towards Uptown. Although what SoCali says about them not appreciating their teachers is kind of a red flag. I believe teachers need the utmost respect from the administration in order to do their jobs well. AHHHHHH! I can't wait to make a decision and just stick with it! Sorry for the mini rant :D

From my experience it's easier to sell/rent a house that has furniture in it so the buyer/renter can imagine what the house looks like when it's being lived in. But the downside is if you have a young child who is messy, it might be a turn off for people viewing the property. Not much help I know, but something to think about. Good luck!

We applied online and via email so we were in contact already. After the application it took between 7-10 days to hear bakc and set up an assessment for the kids. After the assessment it took about another 7-10 days for the schools to offer a place for us. HTH I think it depends on the schools though. It's a good idea to give them a call and make sure they received the application. Good luck!

Interesting to hear that about Universal American because I read some reviews online that said the opposite! I liked the school when we visited as well. The mix of nationalities, location and students generally seemed happy. It's the farthest from us so lower on the list of choices. :( This process is stressful, but we need to commit this week as we have been offered places at all 4 schools. Anyone else with experiences about Uptown?

Thanks for the reply SoCali. Can I ask which school he transferred to? Maybe I should be looking at other schools as well. We applied to Uptown, Universal American School, GEMS Royal Dubai and Star International. We aren't too fussed about which curriculum (although prefer IB) because we are a mixed background family and who knows where we end up next. We mainlhy applied to the schools in Mirdif area out of convenience. What do you think the problem with Uptown was? Do you think that their standards are lower or maybe teachers have incentive to give higher marks (ie pay scale is based on performance?!?). Actually kind of nervous now hearing your experience. :(
