Thanks for all thoses perspectives! I am new to Abu Dhabi, will soon move here to join my husband. We are legally common-law married where we come from in Texas. We did not register the marriage there. Can we get a marriage certificate here? What is the process? I'm from houston! i got married in houston, so not sure how to get married in the UAE, though. sorry!

"The Innocents" (1961) - (From Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw" Saw that on telly when I was 12, didn't see another horror film till I was 18 and went to see "Don't Look Now". Do not watch horror films ever now. i've seen 'turn of the screw' as an opera and it wasn't too scary, but when i read it (back when i was 16) it scared the living day lights outa me. it's one of my favorite reads!

Bold 9700! Sleek, s3xy, easy to use, great interface, not chunky and awkward like the Torch which, according to Axiom, has a lot of functional problems. i think the only main difference between the 9000 and the 9700 is the track ball vs the track pad...right? Yeah I think so.... I love the track pad! So smoooooth hehehe.... and the 9700 was available in white which I got as it's so Dubai lol. i had my 9000 blinged up with a bronze case +dark brown and golden zebra stripes on the back while i was in dubai last week...now i wish i hadn't.

I would love lots of kids too... but don't think I could afford more than two. Though I say this bravely when I'm right now dead scared about bringing this first one into the world (I made the mistake of watching a birth video...lol) :) i know how you feel. while i was pregnant i watched birth videos on youtube every saturday morning and then refused to give birth. don't worry, you'll be fine!

also-- that Egyptian couple who recently had a multiple birth in the UAE. They were given a house I think, right? In all fairness, after reading the Gulf News article, I don't think we can compare the two cases. This couple had been trying for years, but were clearly not ecstatic when they found out they're having sextuplets because they knew the end of their means. Also, they said they want to return home to Egypt so that they can have help caring for the kids, but couldn't afford air tickets...meaning at least they do have some sort of a plan to cope with this without help from strangers. I really don't think it's fair to compare these guys with Octomum, who clearly wants attention too. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/health/couple-welcomes-sextuplets-but-face-tough-financial-challenge-1.737652 edited by stovetop on 26/01/2011 and I get this too. my desire for a second child right now is pretty strong too, but because of circumstances i have to wait a bit longer to make the decision to continue the process or not. i'm just sensitive beyond reason.

@GGP The point is that she CAN'T pay for everything? Do you think it's right that tax payers have to fund her medical insurance and welfare checks while she sits at home pondering her next move towards fame? She does not have the financial means to take care of 1 child, much less 14 (sorry, I've lost count). A familiar situation in the US: middle income families, where both parents work 2 part-time jobs each ... and their 1 child doesn't have medical insurance because the combined income of both parents puts them to high. Meanwhile they can't afford private insurance and neither of them get benefits from work. Does that sound right to you? They are doing everything right and can't catch a break...meanwhile Octomom gets benefits because she doesn't have a job and has too many kids to afford childcare so she can (if she could get off her rear) get a job! There's no 2 sides to this story. i agree with you. i do. (really). i just feel uneasy about labeling her so strongly. i haven't slept in two weeks. i cry at the sight of a peach these days.

@GoldenGlitterPunk I think everyone is within their rights to have children. However, there needs to be some sort of ethical decision making on the part of doctors. When you go to adopt a child, financial considerations, psychological state, criminal background and familial support system are taken into account -- and you can be denied if you don't meet the requirements. Why not for fertility treatments -- it takes considerable amount of money and attention to raise just one child and exponentially more for multiples. Where are the child advocates in this matter? Where is Gloria Allred championing civil rights for these children instead of the famewhoring Tiger Woods mistresses? Octomom is a single mother with kids...and wanted MORE? Well it doesn't matter what she wanted, she couldn't take care of them. We hear about those nice old grandmas who just LOVES cats. Can't see one on the street without bringing it into her home...aww how sweet. Until she has 100 cats stuffed into her disgustingly dirty house, with no one there to help take care of them, urine and feces splayed everywhere, cats with infections because she can't keep track, etc. What happens...the authorities come and take them away from her for neglect and inability to care for the animals. It is in the best interest of her and the animals. [b'>Why? Because having civil liberties doesn't allow you to endanger the health, happiness and lives of other living beings just so you are satisfied.[/b'> i get that. i do. but what i've seen of her kids on the oprah clips, her kids seem happy and taken care of. as long as she finds a way to pay for the upkeep or makes the arrangements she does---i really don't see a big deal. the septuplets still do interviews with ladies home journal from time to time. and they get some pretty good state assistance too.

Gee, I dunno. I feel that she felt she needed to have the children. I would really love a ton of kids. My husband and I have agreed on 4. Some of them will be our own, and perhaps we'll be lucky enough to adopt one or two. If we can financially take care of more children, I'm pretty sure we would love to adopt. I love the idea of a big family, I love the way my little boy feels in my arms...but our son is currently speech delayed and we're waiting for proper assessments to see what further assistance he'll need growing up...perhaps we may not be able to have more children, so that we can ensure to give our son the attention he needs. I think the Nadya may have figured that the general American public would be more sympathetic to her and her need to have many more children. I remember when the septuplets were born in Iowa (I think 1997) and No one really too much of an issue with them. They already had a child before too. Granted a total of 8 children is not 14, but realistically the general trend these days is 'you should be happy with at least the one/ones you have'. What if you just want more? my grandmother had 11 children! My other grandmother had 13! I feel like a major reason Nadya wasn't welcomed as much as any other multiple birth family was simply because she had them during a bad economy. It was 2008 and more and more women were having children without being in relationships. They felt their time was running out and they just didn't feel like waiting around for prince charming. So perhaps Nadya decided not to wait around for some guy to show up...it was the debt that she accumulated that disgusted people...as well as the fact that she wasn't working. I think one of her children also has some form of Autism which would make working kind of hard if she was the full time carer. Not to mention the other 6 kids. I don't agree with her choice, but she had a right to make it and I don't think she deserves the double standards either. I think Oprah and Suze were very mean. I don't understand the fervent hatred. I really don't.

I will post this on the Qatar forum. I was debating that as it seems pretty quiet over there and many of the posters post on here. So it looks like that hospital has had great reviews. I'm relived about this as I would like to stay in this region (mainly for the warm weather all year round), and the fact that this move would be very soon, as in the next 6 weeks. GGP, thanks for your review. that sounds like hospitals in Canada. Ugh! The icing on the cake was how my grandfather was treated when he had a heart attack and a stroke. I think the move to Doha would be a nice change of scene for both of us now too. Thanks again, everyone. I wish you the best with whatever you decide. :)

Okay, I'll tell you from my experience. My mother was a doctor for the military (we're from Texas). I got married and moved to London--- then I had to start using their medical facilities. YUCK! YUCK! YUCK! The NHS hospitals (and even the private hospitals) are a horror. I had to have my son privately here in London after the NHS lost my records around 7 times during my pregnancy. During the pregnancy, I started bleeding (at 16 weeks) and they told me I had miscarried. I demanded an ultra sound and on the screen was my happy little bubbly baby--heart still beating. They never figured out why I was bleeding and even sent me home (still bleeding). I ended up delivering at 37 weeks (c-section) AND I had pre-eclampsia! Waiting that long and not figuring out I had such a serious condition was past irresponsible. It was absolutely third world. If I hadn't demanded a c-section the morning I did no one would have realized I had pre-eclampsia. London is not a great place for medicine. Not even Harley Street is that great. The medical practices are out of date. If my mother hadn't been a doctor I wouldn't know to go and call up her friends and ask them for advice regarding the next steps. My son is currently speech delayed, I've combined his treatment with Private and NHS help and let me tell you, I've got the best in the country and I've still had to quit work to help my son because the medical services here are out of date and overstretched. Having said all of this, I do have another American friend here who is undergoing cancer treatment here, but I think it's more out of necessity because she may not have insurance in America anymore (Her husband works here for one of these banks)...So perhaps their UK Insurance is paying for a private room at an NHS hospital. Also, the hospitals themselves are generally are a huge mess. Blagh.

okay, when are you moving. have we decided on a gym yet? LOL, Probably not there till mid-late March at the earliest, so you will beat me. Based on the gym thread 3 or so days ago, I'm thinking Fitness First might be the go. FF seem to have reasonable facilities, be reasonably priced, plus when we travel home or to other countries, will be more likely to have sister gyms. We are hoping (depending on schools) to live somewhere up around the Green Community, making FF Media City the closest, but it is a platinum club (have no idea of the price - not on their site). Anyway, that's my brain dump... don't know if it helps. I have a **** load of weight to lose. But that's a whole other thread. edited by Buy me a Pony on 25/01/2011 I have more weight to lose than I'd like to admit. I just have to figure out child care.

really? does it get that bad? I heard that the local women don't wash their hair everyday to avoid losing hair. What Emirati women/men I know are fanatical about showering daily and yes that includes hair. Where did you hear that? :) I heard it at one of the salons the last week. I suppose I should clarify, the women washed their bodies often, just didn't wash their hair often (but don't people with thicker hair wash it less?...I thought it was supposed to be better for the hair?)

i have 2 different water filters in the bathroom, didn't help, am on special hair vitamins, my hairloss started within a month of moving here, in my case don't think that a vit D deficiency would have set in so quickly?all i can assume is that it's the desalinated water.perhaps weakens follicles is a better description?i've started to limit hairwashes and doing final rinse with cheap bottles of mineral water, really want to hold onto those last remaining hairs... really? does it get that bad? I heard that the local women don't wash their hair everyday to avoid losing hair. surely, you can treat your scalp so that even if the water isn't the best you can discourage hair loss? I'm a big fan of Phillip kingsley--do they sell his hair products in Dubai?

alrighty...does anyone have experience with a child going to school in dubai with a speech delay? My friend sent her DS (who had a speech delay and some other issues) to Blossom nursery, where they had a speech therapist come onsite and work with the kids that needed help. If you want, I can email you her details and you can talk to her about who see saw. I do remember it was hard to get an appointment with this woman (outside the nursery) as she was really booked up. However, my daughter is 24 months, and she has a lot of friends that aren't talking a whole lot either, so I'm not sure I'd be all that worried, if I were you. edited by guinness on 25/01/2011 edited by guinness on 25/01/2011 ooh, I would LOVE the information! my email address is: kishmish at gmail dot com ... although hearing that other children around the same age as my DS are in the same boat makes me feel like maybe this isn't such a serious problem. :)

I am pretty mad at how my domestic helper has just been treated at the Government Medical Clinic. She (S) came into work yesterday looking pretty poorly, so I put her in a taxi (could not take myself as my DD is already home sick), off S goes to clinic, she came back and said the Dr. said it is just a muscle pull. I dont believe this, anyway off she goes back to bed, this morning she looks like death warmed up, so drop DD off at school and take S to Clinic, I go in with her, the Dr. was very aggressive he almost had me in tears (and I am a strong person), this is before he gave her physical examination, kept saying to S - What do you think is wrong, what you want me to do, why are you saying you have pain, I then ask him to stop asking her questions in that manner and giver her examination, so he does anyway, he says there is nothing wrong with her, just a bit of muscle pull, it is all in her head, she justs wants to go home, just send her she is no good. I then said If I was the one showing same symptoms would you treat me as aggressively, - he just looks at me and says nothing. Then he had the cheek to say to me - The problem is you treat her too well. At this point I said, are you going to give her a prescription for what I believe is an infection, he said NO INFECTION - SHE TAKE VALIUM. I can not believe how a professional person can treat anybody regardless of who they are or where they come from like this. I am so mad, just wanted to have a rant. Anyway, took her prime medical and yes she has an ear infection, S in now on antibiotics and the Valium prescription has been destroyed. no, no, no! give me the valium. (please)
