In my opinion and experience, it is best if she brings as much money as possible to get her through the first few months. Although she will get an advance during the training period, they will deduct it from her salary so money could be a bit tight for a while! Also, depending on her accommodation, if in new and depending on flatmates (if any), there are added costs - tv, internet, microwave, kettle, iron, etc. If she is lucky to get in an 'established' apartment, it's highly likely that the existing flatmate/s have already bought the essentials and will share them (that of course, if they will!) When I joined, I was lucky enough to move into an apartment where previous crew had left items when they moved out but as there are lots of new crew accommodation these days, it doesn't happen (or can't as they are brand new buildings!) I think that there are two items that she should purchase when she first arrives (or as soon as she can) - 1) Dubai sim card/phone (either Du or Etisalat) and 2) Iron - as silly as it sounds, it is her responibility to make sure that her uniform is uncreased and presentable (during training it's the red EK t-shirt and her own black pants). Some new crew forget this and spend all their money on going shopping or partying (which is very easy to do!!) and not buying items that are necessary! Like the others have said, there are places in the airport to exchange money. And all the malls have exchange places too, so it is very easy to exchange almost any currency in Dubai! I was going to suggest that when she arrives, and of course if she wants to, I could meet her and show her round Dubai to get her bearings a bit as I know it's all very daunting to start with. But unfortunately, I'm trying to get on a flight to go home for a few weeks. But I'm more than happy to do when I get back (should be the beginning of August). Hope she enjoys her last few weeks at home. It's such an exciting time - I still remember it clearly and that was over 6 and a half years ago! HTH Actually I do second this opinion, back in 2004 when I joined - no it wasn't a crew job - in that time it wasn't sure if I will get a company accommodation, was lucky enough to know after we been settled in apartment, that this was my permanent accommodation, my batch was 36 new joiners - no not from the same country - only 12 of us been given the accommodation, the rest had to go figure out where to live..... second I did not have money with me, had only 100 US dollars, which gave me in that time 340 dirhams, and no one have told us we can get half of our salary, in fact not before 2 weeks - in that time there were a public holiday don't remember what was it - and had to live in those 2 weeks with those 340 dirhams..... after those painful 2 weeks, had the briefing and gave us only 1000 dirhams - will be deducted from our first salary, which was the basic salary only - and there were no landline tel in the accommodation, it was only Etisalat service provider and the sim was 360 dirhams with 10 dirhams credit in that time........ It happen in that time I did bring my own iron to do my cloths, I was a queen in my apartment as every girl wanted my iron to use it :D please let your DD bring with her enough cash, and yes she can always ask the meet and great staff at the airport to go to the nearest money exchange, don't change a lot as the airport prices not good compared with banks or money exchange out - not inside the airport....... I know you are in US, so not advising you to bring along your US iron - different voltage - but you can always buy one once you are in dubai.... she need to but herself NOL card - that enable her to use public transportations - as taxi will be expensive for her - and familiarize herself with her neighborhood - doing this on foot will always help her to know where to go once she is in Dubai - buy groceries from hyper markets- in that time avoid spinnies as it will be expensive in the first 3 - 4 months, small groceries are good for fresh milk and du or etisalat phone cards..... What ever your DD will be joining, all the best for her, and remember these baby steps, and she will discover herself how to live in Dubai...... and welcome your DD to Dubai :)

You're supposed to be wearing gold, not pooping it out ... what a waste I don't know why just come up in my mind, the episode of Come Dine with Me celebrity episodes, the one that have the snoopy model or something like that, who made a desert with a gold leaf on the top, and the radio dj or something refused to eat that leaf, and scooped it on a side of his dish........ I don't see any beauty or taste for that dish....people eat gold while others in another part of the world die from hunger, or worse women in dark parts of the world could sell their body for a meal....... seriously SHAM on anybody entertain this type of eatings .....

oh Niggly ! Ive been following your threads and didnt realise it was that bad ! you must report it asap. Try not to get to stressed out at this stage of your pregnancy as well. I know its easier said then done but your health is much more important xxx good luck x Exactly! Go to the police, protect yourself by involving the police in this, do not try to go to his work, maybe he will tell lies about both of you and they will call police for you instead! Police will sort this out, under any circumstances DO NOT have any contact with them, if you have any type of evidence they demanded money - phone calls or sms - this will help, even if you did not record the phone call, the police will get the phone call itself from the service provider..... take care and stay strong, the best thing to do is just go immediately and report them ASAP, you can always have your poor son's medical reports handy to support you in the maids claims of not being paid, if you have your or your DH's bank statements of withdrawing the maid salary that will help, I know you did not have her sign that she received her salary, but the bank statement will help in that matter..... sending positive vibes to you, and yes you did not make anything wrong, she is the predator - the maid and her so called family or friends........ this man if he have no family connections will land himself in jail, even if he is a family member, still will land himself in jail.

Niggly, Do not be afraid of this w@nker who wants more money....tell him not to come back, as you are already called the police and gave his description..... you need to change all your phone numbers, and yes you should go to the police with the info of this maid like her passport details, and sit nicely and talk to the police that this maid is sending some strange man claims he is her relative that you have no idea who he is, tell the police exactly what he did say to you and he demanded money to leave you alone..... This will sort him out, did this man left any contact details ?

It happened to me long time ago, it was a dentist- in that time I was fixing my teeth after giving birth to DS1 while pregnant my teeth just kept braking up and could't fix those molders and once I gave birth found that dentist randomly - the first 2 visits were okay, as DH was with me, the 3rd visit, DH was on duty, so the nurse was there, then the dentist changed the conversation into arabic - I do speak arabic so he can - the nurse did not speak arabic, then he made a comment about my acne problem, I told him it's genetic in my family, then out of no where, he started talking about himself that he had acne when he was young, and how did he fixed this problem, stupid me asked him how, he said that as a young man with no family with him when he was in canada, he involved himself in sExual relationships, and that fixed his problem, and I do not have enough of this that's why I still have this problem!!!! I didn't understand why he did say that.....but all I can remember that I didn't go back to him to finish fixing my teeth with him.....If I know what I know now, I would reported the b@stared, still there were no evidence on what he said, as he said this story in arabic, and the nurse won't understand a thing, or maybe will claim that I was not a patient with him. I was scared of what next could happen, in that time I pretended that I need to go hime as the maid is going back to her agency, and I need to release her......

Or this: http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/traffic-transport/dubai-residents-cry-foul-over-jaywalking-fines-by-policemen-in-plainclothes-1.1040741 With regards to cameras and ID cards, do you think the police are really going to sit through hours of footage and trying to match up people in a gigantic database? Or are we talking facial recognition software. Personally it sounds like a big scam. edited by Chocs01 on 29/06/2012 A Programm do this Chocs01.....I am doing a diploma in security right now, and been dazzled by what technology can do!!!!

I don't think this is a baloney, A colleague of DH, did cross the road from over the hedges and a week later been contacted by the police to be fined over a 1000 dhs, not crossing from designated area and jabordizes his life ???? Ladies if you can look up from light polls, you will find cameras are monitoring the pedestrians....hence every body HAVE to have ID card, it's easy to run search the video footage with all ppl holds ID card....and BANG they found the naughty offender who didn't cross from the designated area.... Using the mobile number/ ID card to get the person should be immediate, that the "offender" should receive instant msg telling him/her they did so and so( Just like salik) this technology named RFID.... this technology won't work with maids, as most of them do not have the 3G mobile to be easy to track them down, and the ID cards do not hold a battery attached to it to keep sending info about the maid.... and this is also rolled out... That leaves the Cameras....big brother is every where. so next time you wish to cross from a "shortcut" please make sure you have no CC camera recording you.....or just simply have more than a scarf to cover your face.... edited by Gorobattie on 29/06/2012

I didn't read all the posts, but I always knew that child ticket is 50% of adult ticket. infant was sort of 10 - 20 % of the adult ticket. on a long haul flight, seriously you won't survive it if you had your 13 months old on infant seat, the bassinet is too small, tried it myself, in that time DS2 was 7 months old and 9 kgs in weight, the bassinet just fit him, in that time he was able to sit by himself, so it was a disaster flight, with DS1 was 3 years old.... you can always but the child ticket for your infant, and bring along the carseat in the aircraft, been there done that. Anouja, I am just like you, done this for the first time, in my son's class KG1, there were only the teacher and the assistant teacher, so I did bought a gift in the teacher appreciation day a thermo coffee mug, both have funky colors, I know the school did said in the news letter only to buy flowers, couldn't arrange the flowers, and thought every body will be bringing flowers, I did what my budget could help, and both were in a good price... In the last day of school I did sent each teacher a Thank You card, signed by DS1... HTH ETA: I just did this to the teachers that DS1 did love, other teachers no - as he never did say arabic, music, PE teacher did this or said this..... edited by Gorobattie on 25/06/2012

That's why we - women - do have menstrual cycle, and give birth....if you get what I mean we have more stamina than men...... that's why we could have flu, still manage to go to work, come back home, do our chores ....etc... men are only one mind track, once they got flu.....they could stay in bed for days.... these buildings looks like it was in early 80's.... One of them was tagged with a photo of someone who was there in 1983 with rang rover and toyota.... he says he was with long hair then lol and when you go zooming in that place, it look like an asphalt road with 2 lanes, going in a circle down to the center of that construction....that construction maybe a masjid or a rest place..... I was a bit sceptic until seen this photo, which makes a sense for people who love off roading ..... in my opinion, I think it's a drag race place???? edited by Gorobattie on 23/06/2012

To be honest this will cost you heaps of money, I mean 4 hours every day.... When my house help was on her yearly vacation, I used to hire an agency babysitter/maid from Mermaid agency, her name is deepika, she speaks no english at all, but she was perfect, cared for my son while I was studying, she gave him his lunch then took him to his nap, after this she was a cleaning machine..... you need to bear in mind that agencies have areas to serve/ provide the service for, for this agency I don't know if they reach your area, as I don't know where do you live. this agency charged me 30 dhs per hour - these are their charges before 6 pm, I have no idea what is the charges after that. I did lost the number of the man/supervisor mobile number, his name was suhail, but I have receipt from the last visit from the maid, the number 04 3492326 the timing for the maid was perfect, you could have set your time on her arrival, it was only the first day she arrived after 1 hour late, as the agency transportation did not know my address. and I found the website of them in the bottom of the receipt www.mermaidhomecare.com I hope that could help

It look like she have no family over there to help with the children. may I say: she tells him she will do what he wants IF he took care of the children here in dubai, buy her insurance over there, so she give birth in UK? This will make hime think about what actually he is asking for, if he gone far and done it, then she got herself a relaxing time to think about what her next course of action: will she continue like this with him? will she start looking for a job so she can have some cash in hand to but the necessary things for her children and herself? this is what come to my mind now, maybe someone else have better idea(s)... tell her to stay strong

Nobody can tell exactly but you in this matter. when we were living in NZ - by the way the winter is miserable in the south island and more in Canterbury district - we lived in rented house, the owners do live in dubai - wonder if she is a Ewer :D - as I can understand, the built first the shed, it was with concrete floor, well sealed for keeping warm inside it, and it can be locked from inside. and they renovated the old house, they did had little children, I think 2 of them went to kindergarten..... I am not telling you to do like her, but again no one can tell what you can do in this situation but you, if your children are old enough, maybe this will be more help in saving money this way, again you need to look at the social life of your children " their friends" cooking, laundry washing and drying, your DH's work, your life in general...... so many things goes into the equation, it's not only money..... Good luck deciding

If the laundry is what you said, maybe try what I do when I spent a week in kuala lumpur, simply I washed them myself! I did used the soap bars provided with rooms, washed my 2 boys cloths, my DH's cloths and myself, it suppose not to be that dirty, but in my children's case, I filled the bathtub water, soaked them in for half an hour, then washed them old fashion way :) to dry them fast, after draining the excess of water out of them, laid the clothes on a bath towel, then rolled the towel - like roulade :D- then twest the towel ... by this way I dried most of the water out of the clothes without destroying the cloths...then hung it in the drying line inside the bathroom.... in my case shirts hung on the coat hanger, trousers as well. Hey sunlight, theses drinks I have test them all except the subiah.... Qassab is the squeeze of sugar cane - it's already sweet - kharroub is thishttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceratonia_siliqua the dried one, been grinned - like coco - then sweetened and serve cold... subiah I have never drank it but again been sweetened and some add cow mild to it and it's served cold... karkadeh is this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roselle_(plant) this one you can drink it hot or cold, again if you have blood pressure problem you need to check first, as the cold reduce the blood pressure and hot rise it... tamer hendy is the tamarind but been boiled, after cooling it they sweeten it...... in general I do not like the tamarind - cooking or not - so I did drank it once for the argue sake, but didn't do it again... so, it's totally up to you really ..... Actually, Unaccompanied minors and young passengers are charged the full fare of adult ticket, this is something I know for sure, young passengers (can) fly by their own all the way, UM's or unaccompanied minors have to write the details of parent(s)/guardians from the drop off point and the pick up point in the UM form. In another words: whom will be dropping them off at the airport and whom will be picking them up in the destination.. so when the flight is delayed they can notify the respective parent/guardian of the delay and cancelation...if the flight is multi sector the cabin crew notify the ground staff to handle the UM's until the next leg of the trip.....the extra charge or the full fare adult ticket is to cover the cost of assigning a crew member or staff to pay this special service for those passengers...in dubai they take them to the UM lounge, and the staff member finish their passport control/ immigration faster than other passengers..... apart from that, UM must be seated beside a female or at least a family, no male passengers to be seated beside, that's why they have to know in advance how many UM on the flight/trip to assign the seats for them in advance. I have just had my third baby and would like to get contraception. I don't want to go on the pill and am thinking IUD. Now I don't have a regular doctor as I delivered at Latifa and went to the gov't clinics for my antenatal care. Question is how do I go about this? Do I need to find a doctor/gynaecologist first or can I just make an appointment with any doctor to have this done. Do I need a prescription? Any recommendations? To have the IUD, you need the Gyne to do it, as he/she will be the best one to tell you what is the best option according to you, as maybe the pill could be the best option for you..... if you do not have a private health insurance, you need to go to doctor on your government health insurance and make an appointment..... the doctor should offer you all types of contraception and you and the doctor will come up with what is the best for you. all the best

The problem is the real ppl who really need money do not beg for it! and those who beg are professional beggars! it really hurt that you want to help the unfortunate people and your help reach the wrong ones, like these women who are in the philippines consulate, they can be staying there waiting for funds to buy them airline tickets back to their home country, working for free inside the consulate as cleaners, gate guards and every thing for exchange for a place to sleep and 2 meals a day! they are not allowed to take money from anyone visiting the consulate, and not allowed to take food. the bathroom they use in a state that I would describe as not suitable for animals, how about for humans?!! one of those women had spent 2 years just waiting for funds to go back home, they are not allowed even a phone call back home inside, they can not even go out of the gate of the consulate, as police cars are present all the time to catch anyone of those women to take her to police station - as a runaway maid - those women who really need the help and they can not even speak about it. Last time been there I had extra sandwiches in my hand bag, those women couldn't even take it from me in front of the consulate staff, they asked me to go to the bathroom and hand them those sandwiches. edited by Gorobattie on 03/05/2012

To answer your question, I am afraid that the policy of the 6 months is true, it was 2006 when I was pregnant and ek did not include me in the antenatal, due I was pregnant before those 6 months when I joined my husband in the medical insurance, the 6 months policy is when the employee or dependent join the insurance... means you joined now or later you still have the 6 months period, not only pregnancy, dental as well. if you have any dental problem, you need to fixed on your expense then the dentist have to approve your teeth are accepted by the clinic, then you go under the ek insurance. as for the baby after 6 weeks of giving birth of him/her ek will accept the baby under the insurance. it was in that time cheap to go and do the check ups in the government hospital - I went to al wasl hospital in that time - and only paid 3k for antenatal and 5k for delivery. nowadays it's expensive to do so in use in general if you have no medical insurance, I would suggest you think about giving birth back home, and some countries do not offer the BCG shot for the baby, that you need to give to your baby back home. the other things you need to look at, is once the baby is born, you need to obtain his/her passport and then the residency and those to important documents are so time consuming, so you need to think about how much time you will be spending away from DH back home, and the family that you will be staying with them, and how much DH will be sending money over to you.... Good luck.

I feel awful for what you are facing... as I had been before in the same situation, to sell my household to leave the country, so I know exactly what you are feeling. Being a person who do buy stuff from people who are going to leave the country makes me feel that I am helping them while I help myself. when someone offers a price I know it's very low I don't try my luck to reduce the price. it happened lately I had bought a wooden king size bed with bedding sand mattress at a price of 500 dirhams made me can not even try to reduce a single dirham. Don't worry OP, you will find decent people who will buy what are you offering at the price you are offering, just don't sell it to that scum*bag who offered you this insulting offer, and yes good on you kicking his butt out. Good luck with your sale, and your move.

talking about parents who did not act like parents, then wants to interfere in your life, then claim they had enough of you and your bad behavior.... welcome to the club. parents like those who think their children are intellectual property and have no right to act on their own, those parents I am so sorry to call them parents.......

Oh my goodness, that's absolutely awful. Guilty until proven innocent seems to be in operation here, but how on earth are you going to do that? It sounds like a total nightmare, I'm so sorry to hear about your problems. Its awful - we lived on the ranches for 3 years prior and have never heard such a thing !!! HAS ANYBODY >?????? How did the men know who you are ? Maybe they sent the letter to others as well ? Well i said when i email ed to ask why they had to close - plus we signed in the pool book !! I have asked if others and they said no just me ?? im so angry - plus so many people are anti social here !!! I'm not emirates so i think I'm an outcast !!!??? Sorry OP, that's exactly I did not want to live over there, it's the empire of the micro management by the security guards over there.... plus the anti socializing by the some of the pilot wives who think they are half gods only to be married to a pilot..... and the sign in and out all the time from the swimming pools that close at 7 pm, the too much rules that make you feel that you still at work, even if you do not work in the first place. OP, why don't step up and find out why the assume your house held is responsible for this assumed poo in the pool? if you proved that you were not in the pool that day and did not use it then they can get stuffed.
