Very heavy in Meadows around 5.30am. It actually woke me up. The lake outside our house appears to have risen by about 5 feet! Is anyone else waiting until [b'>after [/b'>the rush to take their kids to school? Last year, in rain that probably wasn't even a quarter as heavy as what we just had, one of the main roads to school here was blocked by flooding and the traffic was a nightmare.

He types well, desertdoc. But the problem is at school - the teachers are having a hard time understanding his handwriting and next year, when he enters high school, they will probably have less patience because they won't have the personal relationship with him that primary school affords. At the moment, they are not using laptops in the school except for IT. Plus there are exams and tests when he is under time pressures and where he must hand-write and the writing deteriorates further. He is smart and has lots of ideas, but it's stopping him from communicating them effectively.

Thank you so much ladies, you have no idea how you've brightened my day with this information. Have been feeling very despondent and blaming myself for not thinking of this possibility earlier. Poor kid's had me accusing him of a bad attitude and riding shotgun over him trying to improve his writing and we've both just been getting so frustrated. Maybe he really can't help it? It's only that he had started complaining about how sore his hand was getting that it twigged it could be something more...

Not that I've sewn since coming to Dubai, but I do love my overlocker. I was given one for my 21st birthday many years ago and still have it. I think it cuts down on a lot of time and just makes sewing a lot easier and more pleasurable. They are a bu99er to thread though! Perhaps you should go into a shop and ask to trial one to see the kind of finish it gives you? Do you think that might help you make up your mind?

Does anyone have any recent experience with an Occupational Therapist in Dubai that they would be prepared to recommend? My 10 year old has had issues with writing for some time. We've now come to the conclusion that practice and cajoling have not made any significant difference to the quality of this writing and that there might actually be something physiologically wrong. He's been diagnosed with hyperflexion in his ankles and this suggests he may have a similar issue making his wrists weak and unstable, so I'd like to get it diagnosed properly and have him put through some kind of remedial therapy asap. It is now causing a lot of frustration at school. Many thanks for any information you can pass on.

From my point of view, that would be top quartile for eyebrows. But my context is Australia. I think for all of mine (brows, upper eyelids and full lip) the price was AUD 1,600 (6,000 AED) but the practitioner (who worked for a friend) brought it down to around AUD 1,200. Encourage her to shop around. Look at people's portfolios bearing in mind for the first few days after any cosmetic tattooing is done, you look like a tarted up drag queen. After about 48 hours, the dye wears off, the skin flakes off and the colour probably drops by up to 50%. There are practitioners out there who specialise in post cancer patients. They will tattoo areolas (is there a plural?) onto boobs for example after mastectomies and reconstructions. So their skills in matching hues for the skin-type are quite refined. I started looking for someone (on and off) to do mine literally 10 years before I actually got them done! (Not that I'm recommending that in her case, just saying you need to be cautious). It took me that long to build up the guts and to find someone I trusted enough to do it. In the end, I found someone who had worked in make-up in the film industry and had a good eye for colour and understood I didn't want anything dramatic. She also spent a lot of time fixing other practitioners' mistakes! Most people baulk when I tell them I have tattoos as they just look like the normal make-up I would wear during the day and when I leave the house usually I just wear some lipbalm and maybe mascara. As an aside, my Auntie has been through 3 bouts of cancer/chemo and recently had brows tattooed on. She is very happy with it and apparently it looks very natural, so it can be done.

I have tattooed brows as well and am very happy with them. I had mine done in Australia though (you don't say where your friend is from, but I can recommend 2 practitioners there - 1 in Sydney and 1 in Brisbane). I had mine done because my hair is very fair and somewhat sparse on my brows. You do need to be careful - particularly over here I think as the artists would not be so used to working with western styles and colours. You need to be looking for someone (as Mrsb said) who will do feathery brows and be cautious about the tone of brown you use as the browns over time will turn orange-y. Brows last the shortest time of any of the facial tattoos (I also have eyeliner and lipstick done) perhaps because they are most exposed. Eyeliner lasts the longest. Typically 18 months is considered to be a good run with brows, from what I've been told. I've had mine for a couple of years, but had a touch-up when I went home in August.

Cheezu, I don't know of anywhere here you can get them here, but I wanted to stick my nose in and say as someone whose kids had pet rats in the past, I would be [b'>very careful[/b'> about going there. Like you, I did a lot of research, participated on rat forums etc before taking the plunge. Yes they are smart, yes they are interactive and yes, they are great little pets for kids. But despite what anyone tells you, they [b'>are [/b'>really stinky!!! Even the girl rats (we had 3) who are supposed to be the cleanest. We tried to toilet train ours and it looked like it was working for the first month or so, then they started keeping their food in their litter tray and it all went to pot. It was a big job cleaning out their cage, and being the clean freak that I am, I would be wiping it out every day and then taking it totally apart and hosing it down with disinfectant once a week. It would take me 2 - 3 hours to get it apart and put it back again (but then we had an awesome cage). So please think very carefully about the work involved before you take the plunge. If you do decide to do it, please get at least 2 rats. We had 3 in case we lost one so that there would always be a min of 2 together. They are very social and will get depressed, fret and get sick if there's only one. Stick with the girls as they are not supposed to be as smelly as the boys. If you have any more questions, I would be happy to help.

I love Global Village! But yes, skip the rides section and stay with the pavillions! There are a heap of new pavillions this year and I can't wait to have time off to go and explore them. Yes, there is junk there, but there is also a lot of good stuff really cheap! I always come away with a trolley load of things whether it's ethnic style handbags, Indian Cotton bedspreads, beautiful tunics for girlfriends back in Oz, lux cushion covers, Syrian chess sets, Afghani pickles etc etc.

Oh shame. I was only in the last few days checking out some Groupon deals for hiring a boat for my DH's 50th. Have been debating whether to push the button or not and purchase. Now I will definitely not risk the money and the hassle of chasing it up. I'm very sorry to read how many people have had a bad experience with them.

The advice given below is all good. You will find the start up costs of moving and settling into Dubai very expensive. It is also the kind of place (I believe) where you need to have a pool of money aside to cover emergencies as well. If you check the thread linked below, you will find a break down of costs for a 4 person family, both: 1. one off moving expenses (NB in Australian dollars); and 2. annualised living expenses in Dirhams The costs were accurate as of mid 2011, so may have increased by now, but hopefully it will help you assess the affordability or manage more accurate negotiations with your employer. It's a horrible situation and I wouldn't wish it on anyone! But my understanding is that sub-letting is legal if the correct paperwork is in place. For example, if the owner of a villa signs a Power of Attorney authorising a Real Estate Agency or Management Company to manage and collect the rent on his behalf, it is considered legal. Having said that, the tenant still needs to request copies of the PoA, titles deeds etc. In the case of Shamyana Entertainment however there was no such contract between the owner of the apartments/villas and Shamyana Entertainment; and those who are now being evicted, did not know this because they did not know to ask for copies of the documentation to prove that the owner had willingly delegated his authority. It is certainly a case of caveat emptor in the UAE when it comes to real estate. The only reason we knew to get documentation was by going through this forum with a fine-tooth comb before we left home. That, and the fact we had a PRO to help us, but even then both parties tripped up as neither thought to ask about the Community Fee! I urge anyone new considering taking up a lease to do their homework thoroughly before handing over any money to anyone! edited by Hairy Maclary on 11/11/2012

I've seen them at Dragonmart and a few weeks ago, on sale in Go Sport at Ibn Battuta. The ones at Ibn Battuta were adjustable for kids so you could increase the sizings as their feet grow. Probably neither outlet would be high quality, but maybe the way to go until you decide whether you want to take it seriously or not. Sorry, can't remember the price.

I recently took our visitors into Souk Madinat to get hennas. Wanted to take them up the creek (Al Hamriya ? Centre) but the little girl had been sick and we just didn't feel she would cope with the journey or the strangeness of it all. I'm sure Madinat was more expensive, but they had lots to choose from and they did a great job. It cost them 150 Dhm for an arabic style henna that stretched down one finger and up their wrist. The salon is in the Middle Eastern Souk part of the Madinat. I should have made note of what shops surrounded it, but I didn't, sorry.

Simples is pretty well spot on. You pay the deposit and it morphs into either the agent's commission or the security deposit for the villa (I can't remember which). If it's not too late, try and push for more than 1 cheque. One cheque and the LL has all your money and you have no power to negotiate if things go wrong. You could even say your employer has a policy about min 2 cheques. Make sure you get copies/evidence of the following: Title Deed to villa Passport/Visa of LL Contact details for LL/Owner Power of Attorney to managing Agency if you are not renting directly from owner Evidence that community fee has been paid and written undertaking that it will continue to be paid as it falls due Check that the previous DEWA account has been settled otherwise you will have problems getting electricity and water switched on. Get an undertaking that the lease will be registered with EJARI and follow this up to get evidence that it has been done Maintenance from my experience is usually the LL pays anything above 300DHMs and you pay for the lower cost items.

Emaar should have a record of who owns the villa for the purpose of collecting the Community Fees I would think. So if it is not inhabited, surely they could contact the Owner direct on the contact address given when they purchased the villa?

Camel Cuddling experience no longer exists - I rang about this last week. Camel racing season has just started. Races seem to be scheduled every week but the times and days vary depending on how many camels are entered. But races are generally held from about 3 - 5pm. You can call this number to find out for any particular week: 055 676 006 THe camel racetrack is exit 37 off the Al Ain Road (Behind the Outlet Mall). Near the camel race track is the Equestrian Centre (exit 29 off the Al Ain Road). Here you can have a camel experience where for 180 Dirri you have a talk about camel husbandry, a 45 min ride into the desert and taste some camel milk. You need to pre-book this so they can get the camels ready. Contact number is Karen on 056 177 2856.

Actually, on thinking about it, can I bounce the itinerary off you? You seem to be familiar with that area and I suspect I'm being too ambitious in terms of what I'm trying to fit in. I'm wanting to do: Buthaina Salon in Al Hamriya Centre for some henna tattoos; then A wander through Bastakiya; then Textile Souq/Pashmina Market; then Abra across Creek to Spice & Gould Souq; then Bait al Wakeel for lunch; and finally 30 min abra ride down the creek Assuming nothing opens till 10am, I might be pushing my luck. We will also have an 8 year old in tow... I want to take my car in because I've found taxi's are really hard to get from there around 1.30 - 2.30pm in the past, so I need to find parking too which will mean we will need to walk back to the car...

Thanks Mrs Whippy - Bait al Wakeel - I know it well, it's one of my favourite places in the world to sit and watch the activity on the creek! I just wasn't sure about the spice and gold souqs. I don't have to leave to be back at school till 2.30pm so wanted to make the most of the time. So yes, maybe we'll do our shopping first then do lunch at 12.30/1pm and do a 30 min abra ride up the creek.

It took a few weeks for our trash to get picked up, and I kept stacking it closer and closer to the street to get my point across. What notices re villas???? I tend to drive with my head in the clouds! So they picked it up when you put it on the street? Hmmm, might try that, thanks for the idea... They've just changed the wording on the Boards of Shame to say that the community is being let down by the villas who are not paying their Community Fees.

Oh, I wanted to add as well that just because your LL might vouch for community fees being paid when you sign up doesn't mean things will stay that way. I talked to a friend of mine yesterday who left Shoreline because access was denied due to nonpayment of building fees. They did their due diligence when they leased their new apartment in a different area. The LL had to show them the receipt as evidence that everything was paid. This last week her family were denied access to their apartment as their security cards had been cancelled by Building Security due to non-payment of fees. Round and round we go...

Is not the property registered with RERA? Surely between RERA and Emaar they have the LL's contact details to CALL him or threaten that he will not be able to rent/sell his property until his service charges are paid? What about the Real Estate agent? Who was he talking to? I am probably an exceptional case - my Real Estate Agent/Landlord (Marks Falcon) has fled to Pakistan. The villa is not registered with RERA despite me paying them money to have this done. I went to RERA last week to try and register it myself but was told I could not due to conflicting information on the lease and title deed. Apparently only the landlord can sort this out and they of course will not do it. So I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. Thank you to Nutty who tipped off about the rubbish dump behind Choithrams. I will go check that out. I didn't know about that.

Good post Mich72. Our relocations people - Move One - did all our due diligence and signed off that the tenancy was ok to go to my husband and his employer. They handle the relocation of 100's of expats a month. They are professionals and they didn't pick up! If Emaar are not prepared to release what they perceive to be private information, what can they expect? They are protecting the greedy landlords in the first place! And yes, Mich72, I agree again. Sorry but Nakheel started publishing names and taking action 10 months ago -anyone who rented in a community after that needs to take some level of personal responsibility for renting a property that had not paid service fees. These are not Nakheel communities MrsWhippy. They are Emaar communities. There has been no publication of villas affected until the last couple of months.

There are tenants here now, who are living the nightmare Drownedinthenile. The Landlord has their rent cheques, they have been spent on goodness knows what. There is no incentive to resolve the problem for them! Do you want to throw families out of their homes when they have paid their rent in good faith according to Dubai law?

Emaar AND the tenants are the victims. The tenants have paid premium rents to live in these communities on the understanding that all amenities are provided for via the payment of the rent. The owners have breached their contracts both with the tenants and Emaar by failing to pay their annual community fees. To block the tenants from entering the community doesn't "up the pressure" on the landlords at all! Many of them have never set foot in the community since buying property here! They don't give a rat's ar$e about gates being blocked or rubbish not being collected because it doesn't impact them personally!

And in the latest low blow Emaar have removed the old notices and replaced them with new ones with a covering statement about how the affected villas are "letting the rest of the community down". They then go down to identify the rogue the villas who are bringing the tone of the neighbourhood down. Trying to set neighbour against neighbour... Interestingly, the list of villas on this new noticeboard in our community seems to have grown by 2. And do we think the owners of these villas really care about this? Not on your Nelly! Maybe Emaar should take out a full page advertorial in the National and publish the names of the owners of the villas. Perhaps that would have more impact? At the moment, they are not the ones who have to face the neighbours. They remain completely anonymous and unashamedly give the finger to Emaar by continuing their regime of non-payment.

Yes, I have no idea how reliable it is. Might be worth asking that question on here in a different thread, LOL. I did! Thanks for taking the time to do that. Looks like you're a busy lady today. The camp sounds fab, I just have to work out if we can fit it in to our agenda while our friends are here. If not, it will be something I will do further down the track I think as it looks fab. Were you one of the families impacted by Emaar deciding not to collect rubbish? Anything been resolved for you yet? Did you notice new notices have gone up pitching our villas against the rest of the community?
