I agree that the some of the sponsored names are ridiculous, but why should somewhere like the Oasis Centre get free advertising just because it's nearby? There are other businesses around there as well. Even more ridiculous, though, was the original plan to call First Gulf Bank Station the Burj Al Arab Station.

Everything he told you about Ejari is nonsense. It costs about AED300 and you can do it yourself if he refuses. In fact you can still do it now if it gives you peace of mind. You will need to do this if you want to go down the legal route, but simply quoting the law to him should put him in his place. You need to check the RERA rental increase calculator to find out what increase he can make. If you're in the first year, he can't increase it at all for the second. Call RERA/Rent Committee for some free advice; they are very helpful and he will probably back off if you can quote them. edited by HereComesTheSun on 01/01/2013

You have no chance of seeing in the New Year on the Palm and making a 3am flight. I'm afraid you will either all have to go much closer to the airport or send them off earlier. BTW, thanks a lot for the Sandance tickets :) edited by HereComesTheSun on 31/12/2012

Yep. Come off the main trunk road at Cabana, do a u-turn under the bridge and park anywhere along the road. Just walk in between any of the Shoreline buildings and you'll find it.

Unlocking and jailbreaking are two different things. For example, if you had an iPhone tied to the Vodafone network in the UK and wanted to use it here full-time, you'd need to unlock it so it would work on the Etisalat or Du networks. You won't need to do this if you by the phone yourself through a retailer, only if you got it on a subsidised contract with a network operator. Jailbreakng is when you want to install third-party apps by freeing your iPhone from the constraints that Apple automatically place on their devices. It gives you much more freedom to fully customise your device to your own specifications, but it will immediately void any warranties, so be careful. I've not done either over here, but I'd imagine most of the small independent IT shops in Bur Duba (Computer Street)i and Karama will be able to help. Don't waste your time with the major retailers in New Dubai though as they definitely won't do this. Edit: Give cellfixx.com, CelMetro.com, Dubai-Mobiles.net, or Technowiseservice.com a try. They will probably offer these services and will usually pick the phone up from you. edited by HereComesTheSun on 23/12/2012 edited by HereComesTheSun on 23/12/2012

I've just come back and there's plenty of spaces. Just head straight to the roof; that's what I always do. Can't understand the people who drive round and round the lower levels hunting for spots when the roof always has lots.

Say "I really don't mind looking after your son/daughter when you're not around. It's great that our kids get on so well and I enjoy having him/her around as he/she is such a lovely boy/girl...................but I can't keep paying for everything twice as it is becoming quite expensive now." If she reacts positively, your problem is solved. If she reacts negatively, she's not the sort of person you want in your life anyway so just cast her off.

Sadly, some people are just selfish like this and use people until they feel like you do now. Either tell her directly each time you give her kid back that today's activities cost AED xxx (or even better in advance - "We're going to Wild Wadi today, it will cost AED xxx), or ask your husband to have a word with his friend and tell him that you'd appreciate it if his wife could put her hand in her pocket from time to time.

Have you checked your drainage pipe. I had the same problem recently with the dishwasher and then the washing machine and it turns out that the drainage pipe was blocked and couldn't cope with the force of the water. In my case the plumber kept telling me the problem was with my dishwasher until I was able to show him the water running down from the pipe in the wall. I've had similar problems with my washing machine. First time, a piece of plastic had got stuck in the pump/filter (can't remember which), and that caused it to flood. The second time, was something to do with the drainage pipe that went into the wall. Some guys came round and simply covered the gap up with silicone gel and we've never had any problems since. So they may be right; there might not actually be anything wrong with the machine itself. This could be your problem if it only happens on long cycles (larger volumes of water) and not on short cycles.

You've got no chance of getting a new one, unfortunately. Are Sharaf the actual servicing partners for Bosch here or are you just contacting them because that's where you bought it from? If the latter, you need to contact Bosch itself (or their agents); they should at least be a little more responsive. Your receipt and warranty details will be on Sharaf's computer system; I wouldn't worry about that. http://www.bosch-home.com/ae/contact-us.html?rw=true edited by HereComesTheSun on 19/12/2012

A white slip is issued when no other car was involved. Think of the red and green slips as kind of duplicates, so if one is issued, the other has to be too. Obviously there'd be no one to take a green slip in your case, so you get a white one instead. And yes, just tell the police you bumped your car today. Saves a lot of hassle and they're not interested anyway as no other car/property was damaged.

Through bitter experience, make sure: a). You call it into the police yourself, regardless of whether the other person has already called them. b). You are the first person to speak to the police when they arrive.

It's an awful, run-down building with a terrible reputation. Dreams Tower is another in that area that is best avoiding. Don't waste your time with either of them. Mmmm... seems like it.s very bad indeed... but i got a good deal there... 2 bedrooms for 65 ... so can i survive or no that is the question... Have you actually seen the apartment?

Stupid question: European imports? Does that mean I'll need an adapter to fit the sockets here? You can speak to one of their customer service agents online to find out. I guess it depends what country the iPad comes from. If it was UK, for example, it would be the same as here. The one I bought came with a UK/UAE style plug. Your iPod charger will work with it anyway, if it does come with a different plug.

This is 100% the landlord's responsibility, but he doesn't care as he's not the one paying the DEWA bill. You're going to have to go to the Rent Committee with this one, but don't worry, they will definitely find in your favour on this and will even make him pay back your over-inflated DEWA bills since you first made him aware of the problem.

He is so worried I skip the country too, and that I go back to the UK and scr*w him from there, sorry for the swear word! but it his words... If that's what he's most worried about, then that's what you should do. Don't give in to his demands as you don't owe him any favours after the way he has behaved. I wouldn't agree to ANYTHING at such an early stage, but you really must speak to a lawyer. There's obviously a reason he wants this sorted so quickly and to have you out of the way. Don't give him what he wants, unless you are 100% certain that it is what's best for you and your children. This really isn't a time to be rushing through life-changing decisions.

Are the shipping company sending a team of people to pack up for you tomorrow? If so, I'd concentrate on more pressing issues and leave it all to them if I was you. They're usually very quick and efficient at doing this, and I regretted wasting several hours of my day last time trying to get stuff done for them in advance.

It was probably me who recommended jadopado as I use them for most of my gadget needs! They offer a great service at great prices, as far as I'm concerned. Order in the morning and it's delivered to your front door the same afternoon. Fantastic! As for iPads, the best thing about jadapado is that they come with Facetime as they are European imports. If you do end up going to Jumbo, be sure to ask for one with Facetime. If they don't have them, go elsewhere. The little kiosks you see in the malls usually sell European imports too, so worth a try. I'll be surprised if you find it anywhere cheaper than jadopado, but if you insist on using one of the major retailers (Carrefour, Jumbo, Jacky's etc), make sure you ask for some extras to be thrown in. I got about AED300 worth of extras when I bought my phone from Jumbo. edited by HereComesTheSun on 17/12/2012 edited by HereComesTheSun on 17/12/2012

I think it's actually just the first 20 mins that are free. I had a similar experience after going to Spinneys; forgot to get my ticket stamped so the carpark attendant asked to see my receipt, which I'd proceeded to throw in the bin right after getting it. So despite having a back seat full of shopping from Spinneys I had to hand over AED 75. Was not a happy bunny that day, but lesson learnt!! Just make sure you get Bateel to stamp your ticket before leaving if you're going to be longer than 20 mins.

Did it too. Thanks very much! I am trying to figure out what the catch is based on the Entertainer being 60dhs more than this subscription! Other half said to me "I better get that paper everyday or that's a waste of money!" Am sure he thinks the entertainer is a free voucher book anyway! There is no catch. They resort to offers like this to shift subscriptions so they have guaranteed and provable circulation figures. The cover price is irrelevant to them (and any other newspaper in the world); they're only interested in increasing circulation as this directly impacts their advertising revenue. This is why you can pick up The National for free pretty much anywhere you go.

But even if you were to spend more than 45 days there, what exactly will they try to tax you on? The only people I can think of who are earning income and can spend the whole summer in the UK are teachers, but it is pretty obvious in their case that they actually are on holiday, so I don't see how they can be touched.

Only for jailbroken phones though, not through iTunes App Store Thank you :-) Is the app linked to something as surely if the phone is gone then how can you access the app and the photo of the thief? It takes a photo whenever someone gets the unlock password wrong and then sends that photo to a predetermined email address.

Is he based out of the country? Yep. We're dealing with his agent at the moment but he's copied in on everything. So not only is he going to lose 6% of the rent but he will also incur costs in having to come to Dubai for the hearing. I would point all of this out to him one final time before proceeding, as he may finally see sense and stop wasting everyone's time.

I'm guessing you already know this, but your landlord is an idiot. Assuming everything you say is correct, he has absolutely no chance of succeeding with this, and the Rent Committee take a VERY dim view of landlords seeking to flout the law so blatantly. It sounds like he didn't do his due diligence when purchasing the flat. Had he done so, he'd have realised the constraints he'd have to operate under for at least one new 12-month contract. To blame you for his lack of profitability is insane; it's his oversight that is responsible. And not only will he fail in his quest to force a rent increase, he will actually end up getting less than you are currently agreeing to. What an idiot.

Legally, does the doctor's note have to be an official attested certificate or can it just literally be a 'note'? When I've been sick in the past I've simply shown my medical receipts along with a scribble from the doctor on his prescription pad saying I should rest for 2 days. I've never had to pay anything for one of those and my company accepts it without question.

You're lucky your company allow you to take 11 separate instances of leave in such a short space of time. Our company rules allow for 2 days sick without a doctors note, but this is on condition that such occurrences don't exceed more than 5 days a year, otherwise, the chop. Fair enough I think, as I would be worried about the commitment of a person who feels it's ok to take so many individual days as sick, unless of course there is a medical condition that can be backed up with a doctors certificate. I have to agree with Here comes the sun, it's not an entitlement and they probably think you are taking the yellow stuff. not more the 5 sick days a year is shocking... some people are just prone to fall ill more then another... as long as you provide a sick note it should be fine... and as per the new ruling (2 years now) all sick leaves are issued but Dubai Health Authority so there can be no hanky panky business plus it cost 50 bucks to get this.... 5 days a year????? and then they sack you? they are operating outside the law and if they did sack someone they could take them to court. She's saying they allow 5 days a year WITHOUT a doctor's certificate. After that they require proof, and if you don't provide you're in trouble. Seems fair enough.

we live in a villa and still happening... There must be something else causing your issue then, but seriously for those of you in apartments my advice below will solve your problems 90% of the time. The internet connection was unbearable in our new place when we first moved in; we were constantly re-booting laptops, phones, iPad, or disconnecting and reconnecting the WiFi router in an effort to get things working. But we've not had a single problem since changing the channel. Definitely give it a go just to rule it out.

If you live in an apartment it's a very common problem. We had it when we moved to our new building (which is almost full), but we didn't have any problems in our old place where we had the whole floor to ourselves. YouTube videos were always stopping halfway through, and the wireless signal kept dropping every few minutes. Basically, WiFi can run on about 12 different channels, but the main router companies program their devices to run on one channel by default (usually 6 or 9, I think). No one ever changes this setting, which means everyone around you (i.e., all the apartments on your floor, plus those on the floors above and below you) are all crammed into the same one or two channels, while the rest of them are completely empty. Download a program called inSSIDer. This will tell you the channels that all these other apartments are using. Pick an empty channel (or one that only has a few users) and follow the instructions on here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/change-your-wi-fi-router-channel-to-optimize-your-wireless-signal/ You will notice an immediate difference in your Internet speeds and reliability. But shhhhhhhhhhhh.............. don't tell everybody about it ;)

It is 15 days with full renumeration. It's not an entitlement though, or an allowance that you must use up whenever you feel a bit under the weather. If they're making you pay for it, then it must be in their own regulations that you need to prove you were actually sick. Your HR department are the people you should be asking.

You've been off sick 11 separate times? I'm not surprised they're charging you for it! since May 2012, not in the same month That's still only six months. I don't know the rules, so i can't help you unfortunately, but they probably suspect you're taking the p*ss having a couple of days extra off each month.

I didn't know there were typing centers/agencies that would do it all for you, but I found it extremely simple doing it myself at the Al Manara municipality building. It's right next to the First Gulf Bank metro station beside SZR. There's even a DEWA service centre upstairs if (like me) you need to get your DEWA connection receipt attested due to not having received a bill yet. Was in and out in 10-15 mins.
