Email emirates cargo and they will send you all the details by email including the guidelines to estimate the cost for your dog based on either his size or weight (including crate) I recently sent 2 desert dogs back in November so before the UK changes. This doesn't make it any cheaper though, must means you only have to wait a month from rabies blood test to travel as opposed to the 6 months before! The cost for one dog and for cargo cost only was about 5k aed. A bigger dog weighing 20kg but gives you a rough idea... Not a cheap exercise but surprisingly straightforward to arrange once you know where to go to get all the bits of paper!

Hi I recently did this process to send 2 dogs back to the Uk in November. It's not as difficult or complicated as you may think to do this yourself. I compared the costs to do it myself or with a company eg DKAC and it was under half the cost to do it myself. The total cost for TWO dogs for the flight only was 10k aed plus you have all the costs of vaccinations, transport boxes, certificates etc so it's not a cheap process. I would estimate around 6-7k aed per dog (for a saluki x or desert dog weighing around 20kg) I am happy to help out with any advice on what you need to do for your dog if it would be helpful? As an alternative I found my vet (vetinary hospital al quoz) really great and they put me in touch with a lady who advised and reassured me along the process for no charge.

Well I haven't completed it all yet but seems straightforward enough and as you say, a fraction of the cost of using a relocation person. Email sky cargo at emirates and they will send you through a number of attachments along with the booking form so you can work out the costs and follow the step by step guide.

Christine at Bark and Purr is lovely. The dogs have been there since march as they had to wait 6 months after their rabies blood test to fly and they are happier and healthier than ever. They are desert dogs though so may depend on your dog if it would suit them. Lots of space to run and the guys caring for them are great. Highly recommend it. There is no vet at the kennels and I go to the vetinary hospital in al quoz. They said that the cargo village vet provides the export certificate and they do the tick tapeworm prior to flying. I think I'm clear, just wanted to avoid repeated trips to the kennels really. Fingers crossed the booking is confirmed in the next day or so with emirates and then I can crack on with the mission! If anyone has a large travel Cage they wish to sell then please let me know.

Does the tick/tapeworm treatment at my own vet need to be exactly 2 days before or can it be one day before? Is it feasible to do everything, cargo village vet and the tick thing literally 1-2 days before they fly. I am asking as they are currently out in kennels in Dhaid and want to avoid repeated trips to and from there. Thanks

Thank you both. My vet told me 7-10 days before they travel but I don't suppose you know if it can be closer to the travel time? Hoping to fly them on the 25th and go to cargo village on 21st?

I need to take 2 dogs to the vet at Cargo Village as part of the process of them travelling to the UK. Can anyone tell me if I need to make an appointment to do this or can turn up anytime...what are the opening hours? Also, if anyone has any experience of this then any advice would be appreciated. Thanks edited by hetfield on 15/11/2011

Bark and Purr is excellent. It is in Al Dhaid so a bit further out but well worth it as the dogs get lots of space all the time. My sister has 2 desert dogs staying there for the past few months (they have to wait 6 months before they can travel to the UK!) I visit them reguarly and they are happy and healthy there. Christine who runs it is really lovely. ETA - probably more suitable for bigger dogs and not lap dogs. edited by smartie1 on 17/05/2011

Thankyou. I will keep him in for a couple of days and keep cleaning it. If it's no better by next week then I will take him to the vet as I'm away for a few days at the weekend and have a friend staying with him in the house.

not always. Last LL took 15k and refused to return it. When asked repeatedly and threatned with court proceedings by the notary public he said simply "im not a good person" That was september last year and not seen a fil. edited by smartie1 on 17/04/2011

I used to go to the ballet centre in Jumeirah for tap classes but they were not well organised and often got cancelled at the last minute - it might be better now as this was a year ago. Where is the class that you found as I would be interested in joining?

I got an iPhone yesterday and then saw this :( Am with Du on Post Paid. Get 1GB free data a month and pay 100aed a month for Elite Plan which includes some free national/international calls and SMS. The only advice they gave was to ensure I dont use the Internet connection when roaming abroad as costs are astronomical. They said 1GB a month is generally enough...use it mainly for email/FB but not much browsing the internet or downloading stuff. I am now dreading my first bill!!

We redirected to PO box in Dubai for 2 years as that is the longest that they allow. It sometimes worked but often went to the address anyway (a property we were renting out). I complained and got some free stamps! Its still didnt work very well. Anything important I changed my address with them to a family member eg UK Bank Account. Everything else I just left so I imagine our tenants now get mountains of unwanted mail!

leave them - they rarely come out...usually only on the odd humid day and then they disappear again. Wait and see - I promise they will be gone in a couple of hours! I have them in my garden and they appear once every few months - no point in calling pest control as they will have gone before they get to you. If you put powder/boiling water or anything else nasty onto them then they will just move elsewhere in your garden anyway. Let the dog lick her foot - it will heal it better than anything else. edited by smartie1 on 03/04/2011

I checked the KLM website and it says that dogs cannot go as checked baggage to the UK (amongst other countries) - they have to fly as Cargo. KLM also specify hard plastic kennels and not the wooden ones. If anyone has any advice regarding the cheapes way to transport 2 dogs (20kg without kennel) to the UK - please post on here. Thanks

It is lovely - but recommend you opt for a tented villa as the stone ones are overlooked and the pools are completley shaded (brrr). The tented villas are amazing. Its no more expensive than you would expect really - we ate at the thai restaurant and it was lovely. If you want drinks/food etc at your villa during the day then you either have to attack the minibar or they deliver room service. If I went again I would definitley take more drink/snacks with me for in the villa. We had breakfast room service - again really nice and the same as you would pay at bab al shams and the like.

I have 3 tickets for Charley Boorman (from Long way down etc) at the Emirates Lit Fest on Friday 11th March. It is at 8pm at the Intercon Festival City - title is "An evening of anecdotes and entertainment from a real life adventurer" I can no longer go and am happy to give the tickets away for nothing if someone will use them. They were 50aed each to purchase. If you want them you will need to be able to collect them from Umm Suqeim 1 today or tomorrow. edited by smartie1 on 10/03/2011

I would also be interested to know about the best/cheapest airline for the UK as will be flying 2 dogs in September. Also if anyone can recommend a cheap place to get the crates made for dogs around 20kg. Jane30 - not sure if you have this already but the Rabies blood test is about 900aed! Mine are due to have it in a couple of weeks hence why they cant fly until Spetember. Emirates have an information leaflet that you can download from their website about transporting pets - just search for it on their website as it may be useful for you.

This is a plea for help to find the dogs a home. The OP has not named anyone and the assumptions that are being made are false. She simply answered a question that someone asked about why the dogs need a home. I hope that this can continue in the purpose that it is intended. To find a nice, loving home for 2 dogs that through not fault of their or their owner are in need. Thank you

Thank you I was really hoping that it wasn't going to be 6 months as she has to travel to the UK urgently for health reasons in under 3 weeks. I think we might need to find foster homes for them over this 6 month period but I don't think it will be easy. Any advice on where to begin to find a lovely person that would do this? Is there any way around this 6 months between blood test and travel? Is it definite definte? edited by smartie1 on 14/02/2011

I saw a cat last night also in umm suqeim 1. An adult white cat with a tail that has been mangled and is now a red raw, infected looking stump. I was driving and it ran off as soon as I slowed down near to where it was but it could really use some help. If you live near kite beach - keep a look out as it could do with being caught and taken to the vet and treated. If FF help with expenses that would be great and I will keep an eye out for it myself.

Thank you for the advice. I know some will say to keep him inside but I don't want to do that. He is an animal albeit a very friendly and cuddly one and I feel that he should be able to do his cat-thing outside because he is a cat. I am looking for advice on the best way to introduce him to outside. Surely there are people with cats that have been outside without being posioned/trapped/squashed/attacked?
